Husband and I did a day trip to Bainbridge and found ourselves hungry for some lunch when I found Jake's Pickup on Yelp. This eatery is located in a gas station, but don't let that deter you. Lots of parking outside and plenty of shaded picnic table seating. Inside, the eatery is located in the corner with a menu of to-order items. They also have a fridge stocked with grab and go items and a pastry window with cookies and scones. Order at the counter, then pay at the gas station till. We decided to order 2 OMC's off their menu. The friendly cashier suggested we add Jake's homemade hot sauce to our sandwiches, which turned out to be a beautiful addition to the sandwich. To my understanding, everything here is made from scratch by Jake, including the buns. The sandwich was super fresh and the hot sauce added a lovely smokiness. We also enjoyed a scone and a cookie, both of which were fresh but okay as sugar was the predominant flavor. I found myself wishing for some flaky sea salt on my cookie to balance the sweetness. All-in-all we will definitely be back on another Bainbridge visit to try more menu items.

I attended an event where Jake's Pickup Grab'nGo catered. The food was delicious and the staff were very friendly. I was glad to learn about this company because they definitely are a great option to consider if planning a casual event that's COVID-friendly. Jake's Pickup had different slider sandwiches and sides where each serving was in a small container, as well as bite-size cookies for dessert. Everything was grab and go as their name suggests, which was especially nice since people could just pick up what they wanted and is mindful of the pandemic, since no one had to use the same utensils to pick up their food, which is the case for most catered food. I had a turkey and roast beef slider with caprese salad and a mac salad. All of these items were tasty, but my favorite was the roast beef slider. It had arugula with a horseradish dressing and the roast beef was perfectly sliced and flavorful. The buns for the sliders were also soft, but held the goods together. I would definitely consider Jake's if planning to have a catered event where people can easily pick up their own food, as everything can be individually wrapped and easy for takeout. Glad to have discovered Jake's, and the next time I'm on Bainbridge Island, I'll have to find their restaurant and discover more of what they offer.

Sconuts. Remember that word. You need this yummy little love child of the demure scone and the devilish donut ASAP. Chocolate chip. Strawberry coconut. Mmmmmm Jake has made his heaven as a baker and chef in the back of a Chevron gas station, and in the process he's put a lustful little grin on a whole lot of surpised faces. Jake makes sandwiches packed with delicious fresh and local ingredients wrapped in homemade bread even anti-gluters enjoy. (He uses non-gmo ingredients and was overheard saying that makes his gluten less troublesome unless you actually have celiac.) His bread craft includes amazing rye, soft buttery burger buns, and the thickest white wheat ever. His sandwich ingredients range from burger to tuna melt and turkey and more breakfast sammies and cinnamon rolls are also on offer. Portions are big. This place is worth a visit. Highly recommend for casual but delicious food.

Cool little place. Lots of interesting snacks and the fact they have a such a good reputation for "truck stop gourmet" food is neat. I tried some of their hot sandwiches (Shrimp Po' Boy and something else I don't remember) back when they were first getting popular and wasn't super impressed - seemed a little greasy and unmemorable. Not bad but a bit on the pricy side for what it was. Tried the tuna salad sandwich more recently and wasn't really a fan - the usage of cottage cheese just doesn't really work for me, texture of the ahi tuna seemed less appealing than normal tuna, and the bread was super soggy and soaked through worse than any other "grab and go" sandwich I've had (that I can remember). Again, a little on the pricy side. Maybe I've just been trying the wrong things though. Seems like there has to be a good reason people rave about it so often, but as it stands I wouldn't say it's worth going out of your way for. As a truck stop/convenience store it's a pretty cool place, worth checking out if you're a local, but comparing it to restaurants/cafes nothing I've had there really screamed "gourmet".

This is defintiely good if you are a trucker and need some healthy options. But I can't imagine a trucker stopping here. They don't take orders anymore so becareful thinking you can. It's all cold fridged items but it's defintiely fresh. Hard to go wrong with a tuna sandwich, fancy that it's ahi. The salmon salad was quite good, it defintiely got a little mushy on the bottom but the salmon was smokey and great! Great first time experience but I wouldn't come.

I live on the island and I'm embarrassed that I forgot about this place! So so good. It is now a pick up grab and go with sides, sandwiches and soups. Today I brought home the deviled eggs and potato salad to supplement a green salad at home. Quality and taste blew me way. Love supporting a local business, especially when it's this good. Can't wait to try one of the soups soon.

This was a pleasant surprise as we headed to our campground in Bainbridge. I had an open face tuna melt and Don had a turkey sandwich. The potato salad was warm and melts in your mouth. My tuna sandwich was with jalapenos and so yummy. The macaroni salad filled with good ingredients but needed more flavor....maybe vinegar or mustard. Overall excellent and friendly, helpful service. My only complaint is it was a bit pricey.

Update: a year and a half later and this joint is still good. Jake is still on a roll. And we got in early enough to get some cinnamon rolls. Crunchy and soft, sweet and just right cinnamon layer, damn these islanders can bake! The breakfast egg sandwhiches with pulled pork are absurd...get here just as they open or they'll run out of the rolls. In the back of a chevron station is a deli counter that makes a fish sandwich that is undeniably comforting. Homemade bread, beautifully flavorful chive ranch, fresh tomatoes and lettuce all hugging a crispy fried piece of cod. It's solid, and tasty and i understand why some rank it as one of the best in the country...it's a sandwich many have imagined and very few get correct. My fiancé grew up in Bainbridge and considers it just good...I grew up in nyc and I've traveled the world and this is one of the best fish sandwiches I've had.

Jakes pickup is a hidden gem in the back of a gas station but DON'T LET THAT DETER YOU. I was suspicious as I walked up, because how good can gas station food really be? The answer is THAT GOOD. We ordered the Wild cod Po Boy and it was dank. Perfect amount of frying (not overly breaded at all, pretty light) and spice that was killing it with the pickle. You could tell the fish was fresh too. It was huge and I devoured it in about 6 minutes. Aside from the hot food (available Tuesday thru Saturday from 10:30-3:30) they have tons of yummy little bites available like protein nights, carrot cake, and flourless cookie dough bites). Plus Saturday's they have homemade cinnamon rolls that are unbelievable.

HI LIFE is an exception, and will be a go-to going forward. The Poke sho-ka-do box is a great option for open minded first-timers. It's a huge amount of food, easily satisfying two and giving you a nice sense of the variety of fish and marinades on offer. Note that it's a fixed set, so you'll likely end up with some marinades/fish you prefer over others. The mayo-base poke wasn't my jam, but that's personal preference. One note, it'd be nice if the box included rice. it's available for $3 extra, which feels trivial. As for dining environs, it's located in a refurbished service station. There's limited indoor seating by the service counter, but most tables are under the overhang where gas pumps would have once been. I'd go at a slightly off-time if possible to ensure you get a seat! They're expensive, but the old adage "you get what you pay for" definitely applies to Blackbird. You may pay more than you might somewhere else, but their quality is exceptional. Today I stopped by for one of their quiches--their spinach and goat cheese--and a lemon blueberry scone. Both were super yummy. I often get one of their chais too, which are also quite tasty (and not at all dry, a common problem with scones). Having Blackbird downtown makes it quite convenient to just stop by while on the way to elsewhere. But sometimes it can be a destination if...you can find seating, which is at a premium most of the day.

After being a BI resident and then moving away I was so excited to make time to stop by Blackbird…read more I had told several friends on the island that I was looking forward to stopping by the bakery and I was surprised to find they had lost their love for it. I figured it was due to taking it for granted... ...I was mistaken. Day one of our trip we ordered several items and none of them were very good at all. We ended up giving items away and thought maybe the bakery was just having an off day. The staff seemed bothered by having to take our order but hey- we all have tough days! Well...day two of our trip we decide to prioritize stopping by again. After a local saw us waiting 30 minutes for our toast and jam she told us to go ask and that "sometimes the staff can get really overwhelmed ". So my daughter stood in line a second time and was told that the employee heard we wanted it to go so it had been sitting at the end of the counter the whole time. We specified we wanted to eat it inside. We asked kindly if they could fix the mistake and we were happy to wait. To my genuine surprise the employee with the pink hair opened the bag of toast, plopped our three orders on trays along with the plastic to go tiny jams and dropped them on our table with the most dismissive uncaring attitude I've seen. You could get more care at a convenient store. We thought we'd try to eat them anyway and the pieces were cold and hard. I asked her about them and her response was "well you asked for to go". Not only does she seem incapable of doing her job basics but as an employer I'm shocked she is granted the simple tasks of serving toast in the first place. She made sure to put plenty of energy into gossiping with her co worker about her irritation with us. We have strong ties on the island still and come back often but we will gladly skip the visit here in the future. I certainly hope these staff members get some basic skills in customer service for their own future.

This place is absolutely delicious in every way! Driving past, you might miss it entirely. The exterior is almost secretive (perhaps that's what they're going for). But once inside, you step into a small Italian market filled with authentic staples. You'll find imported pastas, olive oils, sparkling sodas, cured meats, olives, etc. Equal parts neighborhood pizzeria and Italian market. The owners themselves came out and greeted our table, which immediately impressed me and set the tone. This place is truly family-run. A husband and wife from Hawaii and Italy who have created something similar to the movie "Nonna". Then there's the wood-burning oven that sits glowing in the kitchen, the kind that makes that perfect blister and char. We ordered the Burrata y Speck pizza ($23). San Marzano tomatoes, whole burrata, cherry tomatoes, basil, speck, and Parmigiano. It was outstanding! The crust is PERFECTLY crisp! Funny note* Look how they shaped the pizza as a heart for us on their own....how cute! We also tried the Bruschetta, which was equally excellent. For drinks, we shared a bottle of blood orange sparkling wine, which might have been the most refreshing thing I've had all day. A couple of things worth noting: - First, like most small Italian eateries, dining here is communal as space is limited. You might get your own table, or you might end up dining along fellow pizza lovers. Roll the dice and enjoy the experience. - Second, if you order something to go at the counter, remember to pick it up before leaving. I ordered the cannoli ahead of time to take with me, and completely forgot to take them with me on the way out. My fault. My only real suggestion for Via Rosa (should they need more business) is to lean into the curb appeal a bit more. This place deserves to be discovered IMO, but right now it's so subtle from the road that many people will drive right past without even realizing what they are missing. Which would be a shame because if you stop, you'll find a tiny slice of Italy tucked away on Bainbridge Island! Will ABSOLUTELY be back. 5 stars.
