The roast beef is piled high in the picture on the wall.
JohnandSharon V.

Subway does deceptive advertising. The roast beef sandwich I ordered was nothing like the promotional photo on the wall. I gently asked the employee about the amount of roast beef and she said they give 2.5 oz for a 6" sandwich, and she agreed that it wasn't at all like the picture. The employee was friendly. I took photographs of my sandwich as well as the picture on the wall and am tempted to send it in to Consumer Report ... they occasionally point out businesses who do serious false advertising, and Subway certainly seems to make the grade.

Great, friendly service, and all the stuff you expect from a Subway. Far superior to the Seattle locations!

Proper Fish was the reason that we took the ferry to Bainbridge Island. We knew there were other…read moreshops we were going to check out, so we went early, got a small breakfast in order to save stomach space for the main event, and then wandered around talking to all the friendly shop owners and picking up a few things. Every single shop owner who we told that we were there for Proper Fish let us know that Proper Fish has the best fish & chips in the PNW. They also said they have other good things, but we had one mission. We got there a few minutes before they opened, order our fish & chips and were highly impressed. First of all, the fish portion was huge!! It was so light, crispy and flavorful. The tartar sauce was also delicious and I'm guessing house made. We also got an order of their fish chowder that did not disappoint. Bottom line: it is absolutely worth it to take a ferry to Bainbridge Island to have some fish & chips at Proper Fish. But since you're going, you may as well take some time to check out the shops. The folks are super friendly, and we found some fun stuff.

We only had two hours on the island, but Proper Fish was a must because of its reputation for London-style fish and chips with mushy peas. It didn't disappoint. You get one large piece of fish, crispy on the outside and moist and fresh inside. The chips were perfect, made from fresh-cut potatoes that came out crispy and well salted, and the mushy peas were a great authentic touch. There was already a small line for an early 11am lunch on a Monday, which tells you something about the following they have. The dining room seats about 40 comfortably, with outdoor tables adding room for roughly 20 more. Service was fast and efficient even with the line. As a fish and chips lover, I'd put this near the top of my list.

Such a cute concept, very popular on weekends so be prepared for a bit of a wait. We were happy to nab spots at the bar, order some delicious coffee and fantastic breakfast foods. Had to wait 20 min for a table for 4. Small-ish interior with the classic diner counter seats and also a few tables. Has a small outdoor area in front. Down-to-earth diner look, with some artwork by local artists on the walls. Standard diner menu, with breakfast items like omelets, benedicts etc on one side, and burgers, sandwiches and drinks on the other. I got the steak and eggs. Eggs, hash brown and toast are pretty standard, hard to get those wrong. The steak which was a 5oz sirloin was better than I expected. It was actually cooked to medium, not chewy and had decent flavor. There was enough food on the $19 plate to fill up. Food was served in reasonable time. Did take a few attempts to wave down someone to take our order and get the check, probably because it was busy.

I decided to take a chance and go on a Friday night while multiple college football games were being played. I was seated right away. While I was waiting for my server several other workers passed me by with a hello. The place is a sports bar look & feel. They even have a separate entrance for the pub portion. I ordered the mozzarella sticks. They were good, but huge. If you're expecting the tiny sticks like me, wrong, they are big. I ended up getting the mushroom Swiss burger due to another item I originally wanted having a allergy confliction. It was delicious, but after the mozzarella sticks I barely was able to eat half. I had the red zone cocktail & a daiquiri. Both were delicious and balanced. All in all a great experience. The atmosphere was great and the staff is fantastic. As a single diner sometimes I'm made to feel like a nuisance. I never felt this at all during my visit.

I was eager to return to this establishment, since I haven't been here in a few years. Regrettably, today's visit was a disappointment. Maybe when I return things will be good again? THE ROSES: TMD is a restaurant I dearly want to like a lot more than I do right now. For those who are retro fans, the dining space, which is an impeccably restored authentic diner, is a real treat. Restrooms are clean. The staff, while sometimes rather confused, tries hard and is pleasant. THE THORNS: It's the food, stupid. This establishment, which used to serve authentic diner cuisine now seems to be excessively 'interpreting' dishes, and they're too derivative for their own good. The most egregious example was the Chicken Fried Steak, which was battered and fried *chicken* smothered in sausage gravy. Note to the owners/chefs: they call it Chicken Fried STEAK for a reason. I ordered the biscuits and gravy instead, which was uninspired. The sausage gravy itself was quite good, but the biscuits, which they boast about, were dry and hard. I get better out of a tube of Pillsbury 'Grands' buttermilk biscuits from the grocery store. My wife's Joe's Special was also a disappointment: the chunks of overdone ground beef appear to have been diced of bits of Sysco hamburger patties, and the dish was assembled with indifference. The tomatoes were uniquely flavorless, and the whole dish was rather under seasoned. On top of it all, a request for ketchup (which should always be at the table in a diner) was forgotten, and I was still billed for the more expensive CFS rather than the Biscuits and Gravy I ended up getting. Also sorely missed were the Bloody Marys. These were a highlight. Did they decide not to renew their liquor license? THE VERDICT: All in all, a once stellar homage to diners has slid into overpriced mediocrity. The building is the same, but the soul is gone. If you want a true diner experience, I suggest you ride the ferry over to Seattle and visit either Voula's (U District) of The Chelan Cafe (West Seattle). The Madison Diner is a DINO (Diner In Name Only). Neither recommend nor discourage. Your results may vary.
