Great customer service. Helpful and honest advice. Friendly folks who were perfectly willing to talk options or make recommendations. For what I got, very reasonable pricing. A little over a week ago, my cat decided to water test my laptop. Long story short, a glass of water spilled into (!) my laptop. The laptop sat immersed in this pool of water for nearly 20 hours. Everything was complete toast. Although most of my files are in the cloud, especially the most important ones, I decided there might be the occasional file or folder that I might not notice tomorrow or even a year from now. I decided it would be best to retrieve the contents of the drive on the laptop for peace of mind. I left the laptop with them to do an assessment first. That assessment was ~$80. After their assessment, they indicated that the contents of the drive were retrievable and gave me an estimate of $400 to retrieve the contents of the drive (the $80 would apply to that figure). I decided it was worth the cost, if for nothing more than that elusive peace of mind. I also needed a drive to put the contents on (or provide my own). Since I didn't have one, and didn't want to bother with purchasing a 3rd party drive, they charged me $140 for a Toshiba Portable Storage device. So, for about $600 (w/ tax) I got everything off the lost drive. Was it worth it? Without a doubt. Would I go back? Hell yeah. read more

Long gone are the days when your computer blew up and after spending several hours trying to fix it yourself, you trudged over to Prog Tech and had a one on one conversation about what the options were for getting you back up. And then you left it there and they fixed it. Now, it's obvious they don't want the local, neighborhood individual with a problem. They make it next to impossible to connect with anyone from just trying to find them on Roosevelt to no one answering the phone when you call them repeatedly just to make an appointment. Progressive Tech no longer services hardware. They discontinued that part of their business, and the folks that used to do that work are now on Lake City Way, doing business as Rain City Tech. They are still great. I probably would not use Progressive for tech support, because they basically lied to me when I called looking for laptop repair and they referred me to some guy way up in Lynnwood, denying any knowledge of a repair shop on Lake City Way (which is who I thought I was calling; originally they continued to use the Progressive name but I guess that didn't work out). He said no, we've always been on Roosevelt, we just don't have a retail store anymore. Even when I asked, am I confusing you with some other repair shop on Lake City Way? Called in at 10:45 on October 20th to ask for a quote about data recovery (GoPro) on a SanDisk memory card. Thought it was a relatively straightforward question but the girl who answered the phone seemed incredibly irritated, scoffed when I asked for a estimate and then hung up on me when I said "Ok thanks I'll check around and possibly bring it in". Not sure if I offended her somehow with but if this is how they deal with business inquiries I can't imagine what the actual service is like. read more

Outstanding work and terrific customer service, there isn't much more you can ask of a business. I first met them when my MacBook Pro had died, and rather then take my business, they double checked and sent me to Apple, because it was under warranty. Now that my MacBook is no longer under warranty and I wanted an upgrade I went back to them to see about getting the work done. They were courteous through the entire process, explaining everything to me anytime I had a question. They did great work, getting me back my computer right on schedule. We actually hit a speed bump when one of the sticks of RAM they replaced actually went bad, but they were amazing about it. They took my computer right back as soon as I walked in, diagnosed the issue, got it running again and replaced the bad RAM at no charge. They even cleaned up a bit of a malware issue I was having, again, at no cost. They're great as far as a business goes, but as a tech business, they are head and shoulders above the rest. I am so grateful to Progressive Tech! I had my Flash drive plugged in when I dropped my laptop. The laptop was fine but the Flash drive was not. I took it into Progressive Tech and found the employees there very warm and helpful. They took a look and told me they were pretty confident they could recover my files and they answered all my questions and concerns. Here's how they work: they charge a fee to diagnose the problem. Then that amount is applied toward the repair costs. You can pay an extra fee to move up in the repair queue but I opted not to. Even so, they fixed my Flash drive super quick! (I brought it in on Thursday afternoon, they called me on Saturday with the diagnosis and called me again midday on Monday to tell me it was ready.) I highly recommend them! *Tip: when you visit them, bring something for them to transfer your recovered files to (e.g an external hard drive). read more

My experience wasn't the best. The staff was perfectly nice, and everything was straightforward enough, but my issue was with how the diagnosis happened and the final cost given the situation. I dropped off my machine to get into the general queue, a $59 charge alone. On top of that, they charge $100 for a custom tower setup. I understand the reasoning, so I decided to go with it. My issue was a basic network adapter not working, just couldn't connect using an Ethernet cord. Now, 4 days after drop off and a bunch of other diagnostics, they came back with a bunch of recommendations to add more $$$ to my bill, but didn't actually let me know if the internet was working, I actually had to Ask. Turns out, they didn't seem to understand that all I wanted was to address a non-functional Ethernet adapter, and they had been using it the whole time... the issue wasn't there for them. This could have been noticed in 5 minutes by simply trying to plug it in, but it took days, and I almost ended up opting into charges I didn't need because their solution wasn't there to fix the original issue. Seems like a lack of attention to detail I guess... had they understood the issue as written down, they would have been able to call me in mere minutes to say "hey, it's been working for us since the beginning"... that didn't happen. I'm glad my PC is working, but from what they told me nothing they did actually addressed it... it randomly resolved on its own. read more

Once again Progressive Tech delivers! They fixed my trusty, never crashes, 2015 Dell laptop for a really reasonable price. Like a lot of computers, the power jack connection went all loosey goosey & wouldn't connect. No electricity = no laptop. But all it needed was a simple repair. Progressive Tech found the replacement power jack, ordered it, and installed it in less than 1 day. Laptop back in action! Well worth it to me to keep this laptop going a few more years. read more

I appreciate the technology help Progressive tech offers. However I'm tempted to leave a very low review today because of how rude they were to my quite elderly parents who came to pick up their computer. My mother expressed to me how grungy and unsafe the area felt and then she was concerned having my dad with her as he's quite frail and carrying a large computer around the people sleeping on the curb made her nervous For their safety. I recommended they put on their hazards as they had a scheduled time for pick up, pull up to the curb and quickly do the pick up. Apparently the man at the store was downright rude about it and wouldn't even consider simply expediting the transaction for their safety. Needed to recover my photos and files from my deceased 2008 iMac and external HD. Killed by lightning and power surge. It's been sitting for a couple of years. Thousands of photos and years of work potentially down the drain. I had backups on DVD but wanted to minimize lost files. Finally, got the bucks and called Progressive Tech. They were close, open and had a decent rep on Yelp. Set appt., dropped off the old hardware. Previously shipped new external HD to them and went home hopeful, they kept me informed and picked up my new HD several days later. After setting up my new iMac and plugging in my external HD I found what I'd been looking forward to see, my photographs and projects all intact. They said the old iMac was fried but were able to recover most of my backups for projects and close to if not all my shots. Very long story but I appreciate the effort and the results. it wasn't cheap but the level of professional services made it worth the $376 price tag. Plus, I got my photos back, they are valuable to me and almost impossible to replace. So fun to set up random screen saver using my work. read more

If you are anywhere in the north half of Seattle, there is no better choice for getting your computer repaired. I've had occasion to use them two or three times in the past year or so, and they are consistently great. This past year, they have handled a tricky SSD HD installation in our iMac, a memory upgrade, and the repair of a broken iMac screen. In every instance, they were transparent about pricing, really fast, and really responsive when I needed info. Not to mention reasonably priced! I was told that it would cost $60 and take 3-5 days for them to "diagnose" what model of laptop I have. You know, something that you can do for free in a few seconds. Attempting to upcharge customers before they're even in the door doesn't inspire confidence in their honesty and integrity in providing services. You have better options in Seattle. I was having an issue with a relatively new computer, and called to schedule an appointment to see if we could hook it up to a monitor and look at the problem. While on an unholy work retreat in Vegas, my beloved "vintage" Macbook took a spill when my boss's boss's boss set it atop pillows on a bed so he wouldn't have to lean slightly. We were taking a meeting from the other boss's bedroom, which was horrible enough. After the meeting, he abruptly left and before I could grab my machine, it hit the hardwood floor. Needless to say, buying a new one is not in my budget. At all. And I telecommute for work and go to school online, so my panic level was... Something I needed to manage. I called Apple support the next morning and after 90 minutes on the phone with a tech who became my friend in that time, we realized I needed to bring it to the store. We got an appt for a couple hours after my flight landed (on the way I picked up a new external drive for back-up) and there I was told that the work they needed to do would require an overnight and because of the vintage (2009) nature of my machine, they could not. Luckily, the repair shop they recommended is a block from my house! Elle at Progressive was awesome and carefully explained the process to me. I paid for the diagnosis ($60) and that evening she called me and reviewed my options and worked through the pro/cons of them all. In all, after $260 I am up and running in again after 18 hours with a plan for the day I can afford data recovery. I hadn't been through this before- previously had just let machines die honorably and called the data a loss- so I had no idea of price point for the repair. When I told my boyfriend how it all ended up being resolved he said "that's cheap! I'm bringing my laptop there!" So I guess I got off pretty easy for a new hard drive and reinstall. They did what they said, they charged what they said they would before the work was approved, and they answered all my questions throughly and cheerfully. I would go to Progressive Tech again in a heartbeat and skip the Genius Bar for my "vintage" laptop. UPDATE: 2019 My Charging cord, original to the machine, so pretty old, was failing. It was obvious. I stopped over at Progressive to ask if they happened to have a used cord I could buy before I went through the hassle and expense of a new one at U Village. The interaction went like this: Me: Hi, just curious if you have a Macbook cord like this I could buy- a used one is fine. Snotty Tech dude: what makes you think you need a new cord? Me: I installed a new battery 3 months ago and it's been fine, so I am sure it's the cord, which is very old. STD: YOU installed a battery? By yourself? Me: yeah. STD: It's probably that, then- was it OEM? Me: no, but I checked out the brand on well before I purchased it. STD: You should only buy OEM, but I'll go test your cord. Me: Okay. ... a minute later... STD: yeah, it's the cord. Me: yeah, I know. STD: we don't have any cords for sale. .... Very satisfied with the Data Recovery work they did for me. I had an old laptop that had died and a hard drive unit from another computer that had died. Brought both in to Progressive Tech and paid the intial fee of 79 dollars plus tax each unit and they looked at it and in a few days were able to give me an estimate of how much the Data Recovery would cost and less the initial fee so i wound up paying about 242 for each unit plus tax. I did have to buy an external hard drive for my data to be transferred onto and i had it shipped to them via Amazon and total cost was 40 dollars since i had less than 500GB for both units. 3 days later, it was done and i was happy. They even wiped both hard drives and recycled the old computer for me so i didn't have to deal with that anymore. I had some trouble intitially from not knowing what to click on and they were willing to work with me in what i needed to do but from their instructions in the email, i got access to my old documents and music that i thought had been lost forever. read more

So took in an older laptop to see about having the power supply jack replaced. They took one look at my machine and told me it was too old and the cost would be more than a new one. "I know, but it's fully functioning and I don't want a new one." P.T. "Well, then we'll need to do a full diagnositic for viruses ($65 I think) and then it will be a minimum 3-hours labor so you're looking at $400" Me - "So even though what I want you to repair has nothing to do with the O.S. or any applications and programs, you won't do the repair without running a diagnostic." P.T. "That's right." Me - "Fine I really want to get this done." P.T. "I don't really want to do this because of the age of the machine." (BTW about 4 years) "You should take it to Seattle Laptop." Nice job Progressive Tech. Did it occur to you that my older machine is used for a specific purpose and rather than dump a fully functioning laptop with a hardware problem into the toxic waste stream, I'd rather fix it? Would never go back. To start out they seem really friendly and helpful. I tell them my problem, battery is not charging on my laptop because the a/c adapter plug seems loose. I go with the one week diagnostic for ~$60. Of course it takes the full week for them to "diagnose" my problem. They tell me I need a new a/c adapter plug. One week and $60 to tell me I need a new plug?? Thanks for that insight. So after giving them permission to order a new plug ($60), they don't get the order in promptly and it ends up taking another week and a half before they get the plug in. I get there, takes around 30 minutes of waiting in a line while workers are chatting about who knows what with another customer(customer already has his fixed computer) . I tell one employee I'm just here for a pickup, he claims someone else will be with me shortly - 15 minutes later, finally get my new plug! Also, try to get you to pay them $30 to uninstall norton antivirus and another $60 to install some new antivirus software. Sooo all in all, I pay ~$130 for a $50 plug and I was without my laptop for over 2 weeks. Waste of time, waste of money, felt totally ripped off. Not a chance I will be back and will gladly tell others to avoid them as well. Wish I could give zero stars. read more

I spilled a cup of coffee on my Macbook keyboard. First time I'd ever done that, but I suppose it was inevitable given how much coffee I drink. I did a search for a local pc fixit shop and found Progtech. I took it in and they did a diagnostic in about 2 days. It wasn't cheap, $120 or so. The thing about modern Macbook Pros is that they are a pain to open and work on. They gave me two options. I took the less expensive one which was to replace the keyboard. I was afraid I had fried the motherboard so this was "good" news. They fixed it quickly. I think they had it for about 5 days total. I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. I've been working on my own Apple laptops for 12 years, tinkering mostly and replacing parts, but I have no qualms about paying for diagnostic services and PT did a great job. It wasn't cheap, but I didn't lose any data, and I was treated well. read more

After my computer shat the bed, I immediately took to Yelp for Computer Repair. I live in West Seattle, but I'm not going to specifically dime people out. Needless to say, one business on Yelp, I tried calling several times, even left a message, but received no word back from the business owner. Distraught and worried about my PC, I went to the next shop up on Yelp and read through the reviews. I was very put off by the business owners' responses to negative reviews. So I took my search "Seattle-wide" and found Progressive Tech. Progressive Tech saved me from having to put a new computer onto a credit card and for that I will always be grateful. Basically, I wasn't sure what was up with my PC but I knew it was bad, and I was pretty sure it was a virus, but was worried about everything. The Progressive Tech guys were polite and helpful right off the bat. I think one guy gave them four stars instead of five because, like he said, he didn't know what to expect. I am similar and was tempted to give four stars just because the repairs were a little pricey... but easily less than a third of the cost of a new system. Based on that, I took the PC home and started her up. Works like new... ONLY BETTER! Brand new system, less than one third the cost, and I was able to afford it out of pocket instead of having to throw it on a credit card. The guys were nice, professional, and helpful. The best part about this place was when they offered me a couple of different pricing options. I chose the lower pricing option, and instead of trying to push me higher, the employee actually made me feel better by saying that not only was the speed on the hard drive I was purchasing faster, but he'd noticed I had come nowhere near a higher capacity drive in terms of storage, anyway. Too long didn't read: the guys answer the phone, and they call you back. Lines of communication are always open. They gave me time frames and met or exceeded all of them. I felt pricing was fair, and although took a hit this month, it was worth it. My computer is working awesome, maybe I will stop downloading dinosaur porn now. read more

I took a computer to Progressive Tech which wasn't turning on. The staff was friendly, and explained to me that the regular diagnostics cost would be $49.95 while the instant one would cost $99.95. Although, even the instant one would take 24-48 hours and the regular one could take up-to a week. In any case, I decided that the price was too high and the guy helpfully suggested plugging a new power-supply in the motherboard to see which one was borked. I did, and found out that the motherboard was dead. Pros: - Helpful and friendly staff. They explain their process patiently and are upfront about the charges. - Seem to know what they're doing, although my problem wasn't awfully complex anyway. Cons: - Extremely pricey diagnostics. $99.95 to get the computer looked at was pretty shocking to me. I was expecting to pay somewhat around $20 for an initial diagnosis of swapping the power-supply. I understand that if the problem is about data-recovery then probably the high-cost is justified but after the initial assessment of the problem the diagnostics price should reflect the nature of the problem. If I didn't know anything about computers I would've probably went with it. - Extremely long diagnostic time. Again, the nature of the problem should dictate this. "$20 for checking your motherboard in a couple of days, $40 for today" would've probably appealed to me. It's their business, they have a better idea of what pricing points make more sense for them. As a customer, I found them too expensive to consider returning for future computer repair issues. read more

These guys are amazing. I had a small water spill on my MacBook Air and it was working fine except for the wifi, which wasn't working at all. The Apple Store said there was a little bit of corrosion on the motherboard but the only thing they could do was replace the whole motherboard for something like $800, more than I paid for the computer a year ago when I bought it lightly used. These guys weren't sure if they would be able to help when I brought it in, the severity of corrosion ranges widely, and the diagnostic fee was not cheap and it would have been annoying to have paid that much if it hadn't worked, but I was optimistic (I had opened up the computer already and seen how little corrosion there was... very, very little) so I bit the bullet and paid the fee. Within 24 hours, they called to say their cleaning procedure had fixed it and it was working as good as new! It didn't need any parts or anything, so the diagnostic fee covered the cleaning and there was no additional charge. I was thrilled, and thrilled with the service. These guys are friendly, they don't talk down to you, they are honest about what they can or cannot (or may or may not) be able to fix, and they will be my go to shop for future repairs. read more

So first of all, this place is AMAZING. A couple of days ago I spilt a glass of orange juice next to my 15' macbook pro. It did not look like much got on it, and since it was shut at the time I assumed it was all O.K. well, I was wrong. Apparently a little bit seeped into a bottom seam! My computer did all sorts of wacky stuff (pixelated screen, would not boot up), and so I knew it was time to take it in. I first went to Apple, since it was under warranty still. Well, take it from me: the minute you utter the word "liquid" they want 1200.00 to fix it (and by fix it, I mean give you another computer). Needless to say I didn't have that much money, which brings me to Progressive Tech. Progressive tech not only fixed my computer, they did it for 162.00!! At first they thought it was a goner, but they meticulously cleaned it until it worked again. It went from having a corroded motherboard and a screen that was broken to being completely working again without any issues (so far). I am shocked and amazed, and I was fully prepared to have to spend at least 500.00. I am so happy with their service. They are friendly, fast and know what they are doing. The guy who cleaned my computer went above and beyond a normal diagnostic, cleaning the thing for hours making sure it would work again. They really did all that they could for me, and it was definitely money well spent. read more

IN 2009 I bought a new Mother. They installed it and I picked it up. But the job was not finished. I did not have to go back once but TWICE!! There was sopmething they forgot to connect. A few days ago I needed a new power supply and they were the closest option to my place. They had to run some expensive checks to tell me what I already knew and installed the new power supplly. This time, again, they forgot to connect my DVD disc drives. I had to do it. I do not think I will be their customer again. read more

I think it would have been impossible for me to give this business 5 stars - not because they didn't do a great job but because computers are like cars: if you don't know much about them you will ALWAYS think the people repairing them are ripping you off. That said, the guys at Progressive Tech were really helpful. I called and explained what I thought the problem was. Over the phone, he was not immediately willing to give me a price quote, as one might expect. I told him that I understood he couldn't evaluate the computer without seeing it and that I wouldn't expect him to hold to the quote. He suggested that IF in fact the problem was as expected it might run around $150. When I arrived in store they told me that it would be $50 for a complete diagnostic test, and that it would take 3 - 5 business days. There was also an upgrade available for $80 that would get them to start immediately. I sort of pondered out loud, saying that I was a graduate student desperate to get my computer back quickly, but also too poor to pay for the upgraded service. He gave me a student discount and bumped me up to the better service at no extra cost. Within 24 hours, they had called with the problem and a quote. They went ahead with their repairs and then called me to let me know when everything was ready for pick up. In the end the total cost to me (diagnostics and repair) was only $100. They were very fast and efficient. If I have any further computer issues while living in Seattle, this is definitely the place I would go. read more

My spouse and I have relied on Progressive Tech several times, most recently a couple of days ago, when we each were experiencing mail problems on our Macs. In addition, I had recently allowed a scammer (masquerading as an Apple employee) access to my laptop for a few minutes, and was concerned that he may have installed malware before I escaped. The people at Progressive Tech handled our problems in short order, and for a very reasonable fee -- just as they had in the past. They impress us as very competent and entirely trustworthy -- plus, they've always treated us in a friendly, respectful manner. read more

I will never be afraid to own a computer out of warranty again after coming here. These guys (and gals!) are amazing. My dad had given me his old laptop because it wouldn't turn on and told me if I could fix it I could have it. The thing wouldn't charge and my dad was pretty sure it was the charger port inside the computer. After talking to some of my more tech-oriented friends, they recommended that I take it to professionals. I took it here and long story short, without even charging me a diagnostic fee, they ran a few basic tests and determined that it was actually my charger cord. I work in customer service, so I know the difference between good and bad, and Brandon (the guy who helped me) is the best. He was friendly, engaging, and best of all, right. And on top of that, I've been dealing with trying to get my other, in-warranty, computer fixed and the computer company has been feeding me all sorts of lines. There was no reason to take the in-warranty computer to them but they helped me all the same. Not to mention, as a woman I often feel like there's some condescension when I'm dealing with computer techs, but these guys were absolutely friendly and professional and explained things to me in lay terms without being insulting. I got a virus. It was My own fault for watching illegal movies (hangs head in shame), but it still sucks and I felt quite sorry for myself. I took my laptop to another local shop and they charged me $150 to "remove" the virus; no guarentee. When the virus came back two weeks later (insert angry face) on a Saturday night of a three day holiday weekend, I freaked out. I cannot live without my computer.
