I've been to Prime 16 twice, once about a month and a half ago and most recently tonight. Despite that I'm not a huge beer or burger fan, I found the offerings, as well as the service, solid and satisfying on both visits. On both visits, I opted to build my own burger. The first time, I had the turkey patty with smoked gouda, bacon, and romaine lettuce and roasted tomatoes topped with truffle aioli on a potato bun ($14 something). Tonight, I had the pork patty with five cheese sauce, pineapple, romaine lettuce and sliced tomatoes topped with truffle honey on a pretzel roll ($13.80). Both burgers were messy but flavorful, and quite filling in and of themselves. In both cases, the patties were the least exciting and flavorful part of the burger, but this may not be the case with beef patties (which I don't eat). The burgers come with a side of fries or a side salad, which can be upgraded for an upcharge. I believe I ordered the truffle parmesan fries the first time, but don't honestly remember much about them, so they must not have been terribly remarkable. Tonight, I had the salt and pepper chips as my side, and they were quite salty and a bit overfried. On my first visit, my table also ordered an onion ring stack to share, and it was pretty much what you'd expect. On both visits, my group was able to get a table without a wait because we came early or the weather was sufficiently bad to keep many diners away. Both times, service was friendly and welcoming, which is always a plus. The atmosphere is what you'd expect from an upscale burger and beer restaurant. One thing I'd like to see added to the menu is boozy shakes, which are the highlight of a similar build your own burger restaurant in Pittsburgh. Prime 16 is probably my favorite place to get a burger in New Haven, and I tried a lot of places back when I was in a burger phase. I came here for a birthday dinner on Sunday, and the hostess warmly greeted us with our prepared table and menus. I'm usually picky with the burger to bun ratio, but Prime 16 has a decent ratio that doesn't make the bread the star of the dish. The burgers are massive, and I had trouble biting down my entire burger so I ended up using my fork and knife (gasp) to finish it. I also had to do it because the patty was so juicy that the bottom bun was getting a bit moist, but I didn't mind that. The French fries were hot and crunchy, and actually one of the top 3 fries experiences I've had in New Haven so far too. I'd definitely recommend the Honey Truffle burger! It comes with Swiss cheese, applewood smoked bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, and most importantly, the julienned honey-truffle potato chips (the absolute BEST). Received my order which was not only NOT cooked as I had requested but was missing food that was clearly on my receipt. So, when I called them to resolve this, I was answered by a very rude man who not only sighed disgustedly at my telling him that I was missing this item he then cut me off and said, " Look unless you drive here and pick up a new order, there's nothing we're gonna do, call DoorDash let them deal with this." Cool spot. Good beer on tap. Wings served with a variety of sauce options are crisp and hot. However, absolutely tiny. Some of the smallest specimens ever encountered, particularly at about a buck each. Burgers a plenty with a plethora of toppings. What is interesting about the spot is that there is virtually no emphasis on any kind of special blend of burger meat, dry aging or prime quality, particularly given the name "Prime 16." Two American burgers, 8oz each of completely ordinary undistinguished beef blend, ordered medium and med rare arrive cooked to their temperatures perfectly. Toppings do not overwhelm the beef however it's flavor is extremely subtle with little to no beefiness as would be hoped for. The patty is similarly under seasoned and lacks salt. Juices flow freely although again lack fatty rich quality of a well curated blend of beef. Buns available are standard brioche and potato on request. We both request potato yet are served brioche. When questioned, the bar tender insists that they are potato buns and that they look similar. With a little pushback, she goes and checks and brings the manager over to assure us they are indeed potato rolls. The only way to resolve this would have been to bring one of each out from the kitchen and compare them side by side. I let it go aNd ate my brioche bun that was supposed to be a potato bun that wasn't. Here's the difference between a brioche bun and a potato bun: Evident in the amount of loft in the bun, a brioche bun is light and airy with an almost flaky quality (what we were served) when compared to the denser, sweeter, tears-apart-in-strands quality of a potato roll. Side salad served with balsamic vinaigrette is decent sized. Tater tots ($1.95 extra as a side instead of salad or fries) are crisp and seasoned heavily. Bison dream ! That's exactly what I had... a dream burger; with two layers of American cheddar cheese, thick slices of tomato, deli style sliced pickles, smoky chipotle mayonnaise. The absolute star of all was the delicious Bison beef patty. It was cooked perfectly and seasoned perfectly as well. As soon as you bite into the brioche combo, you can taste the subtle gaminess of the Bison meat with some of its natural sweetness. It's tender, juicy and flavorful. It is truly an amazing burger! My girlfriend had the regular salad with Atlantic wild salmon. It was also seasoned and cooked precise. The salmons was cooked to translucent and just enough of salt and herbs. The cheese cake..... OH my !! It was amazing, house made with Oreo cookie crust and chocolate ganache topped with this amazing cheese cake batter that tasted out of this world ! I'm not into sweets that much, but I could eat bricks and bricks of this !! They have plenty of options from small bites to mains, all with a few wine selection and generous beer selection both draft and local to bottled, canned and imported options. The service is also at the pair with their food, friendly attentive and warm. It seems like they have a good camaraderie amongst them and it traduces to good service and efficiency and of course happy customers :) The only not so good or not good at all thing they had, was their Yukon potato fried chips. Burnt, grease and bad. They should take that off the menu or sliced them thinker so they don't burn as much and they keep some of the potato taste. The food is really good which is why Im giving 1 star, but have had a couple of bad experiences with service. Last night was particularly egregious. Went to grab a bite and a drink after watching a movie. We walked up and were about to enter and felt that we were given weird looks but thought we might have been imagining it. The host (or possibly a server who was seating us?) walks in after us and asks how many. We say 2 and ask to sit on the patio. He says ok and immediately warns us that the kitchen is going to close at 10pm. We look at our watch/phone and it's 9:17pm. We were confused but said ok and proceeded to sit down at a tiny table right outside the door. There's one other couple sitting across the sidewalk from us. The server immediately comes over and asks us our drink order, my boyfriend orders a beer & i just ask for a water because i haven't been able to look at the menu yet. We eventually get our order in (including my drink) when she comes back and I could feel some tension but she's at least polite. The other servers proceed to shut the patio down, stacking everything right next to us. My drink eventually makes its way out & the food comes out right after. My boyfriend asks for a second beer and the server comes back to tell us "the bar is already shut down for tonight, but i can get you another drink." We ask what kind of drinks and she says fountain drinks like a coke or a sprite. We are clearly confused because online it says "Prime 16 New Haven Kitchen Hours: Sunday-Wednesdays 11AM-10PM Thursday-Saturdays 11AM-11PM Bar Closes One Hour After Kitchen" & there were patrons inside. We double check the clock and it's now 9:37 and we cannot even get a second beer. Given all of the obvious cues that we were not welcome there, we dont even get to eat our food & just ask for to-go boxes (which she happily and swiftly grabs) & immediatly pay for the tab. Since we both have experience working in the restaurant industry everything about this night out irked us more. It was clearly the end of their shift & instead of telling us the patio was closed and that we could sit at the bar, they proceeded to give terrible service start to finish, including claiming that the bar had "turned off the [beer] taps". Went to this restaurant with a big group of friends. The server was nice and attentive and the food was good but definitely on the pricey side. I specified I wanted my burger to be bun less and was charged 95 cents to remove a bun. There was also a charge to remove bacon and cheese from a burger. To me it is absolutely ridiculous to charge to REMOVE things from a burger especially because there was no indication of this charge anywhere on the menu. In my three years in New Haven, there is no restaurant with which I had a closer relationship than Prime 16. My friends and I had a standing date at Prime and at least half a dozen of us would meet every Tuesday for a relaxing mid-week dinner. Considering that a large group of more or less the same faces converged in the same dining room dozens of times over the course of two years, I take special issue with Prime's atrocious service. I find it downright strange that not one server in all of our visits acknowledged our repeat presence a single time. I'm not speaking out of some sense of entitlement to preferred customer status - I just think it's weird that not a single waiter or hostess said so much as an "Oh, you guys again" when each of us could have recognized most of the staff on the street. And that's not all - the service is legitimately abusive. I can't count the number of times that we made a reservation to avoid the clusterfuck that is Prime 16 at prime hours only to be left waiting for up to forty minutes anyway. Then there was the time I almost swore off Prime 16 forever. It started like this: "Hi, can I make a reservation for a party of ten tonight at 6:30?" "A party of six?" "No, a party of ten." "No problem." Of course, when we show up, these buffoons have set up a table for six. Not only that, only half of our party showed up on time because prompt seating was a never in our experience. The hostess chose this occasion to tell me Prime had a new and sudden policy of only seating complete parties and letting tables go after ten minutes. Meanwhile, the staff was setting up our table nearly ten minutes late. That's some nerve right there. But - the burgers are the best in town, and there is no close competition. I've tried a big chunk of the menu, and not all of the burgers are created equal. I would recommend going with a plain cheddar cheeseburger for maximum juicy meat appreciation, especially on a first visit. You can build your own, and the plain comes with onion, tomato, and lettuce. Add cheese and you have a grade-A cheeseburger worth sinking your teeth into. The meat is high quality and loaded with good fat, and all the components meld together in delicious simplicity. The soft roll is good and holds everything together. If you want a chewier bun, opt for the pretzel roll for an extra fifty cents. A few of the named burgers are fantastic as well and give you a little more fancypants bang for your buck. The Latino burger with its beef and chorizo patty is excellent. It comes with a brilliant jalapeno relish that draws out the pleasant spice of the meat with irresistible result. The stuffed mushroom burger is another winner, made with beef stuffed with crimini mushrooms and shallots, with roasted portabello mushroom along with lettuce, tomato, mustard, and swiss. The meat and mushrooms provide a great savory earthy flavor tango worth inhaling. My other pick would be the cowboy burger, which comes with a cholesterolic combination of smoked Canadian bacon and fried egg, along with Vermont cheddar, romaine lettuce, and a kick-ass zesty salsa. All the flavors work great together and don't overwhelm the patty. I've also tried the lamb burger, the N.Y. steakhouse burger, the Maui burger, the turkey burger, and the smoker. All of these were decent, but I wouldn't get them again. I suppose if you're looking for something leaner, the turkey isn't a bad option, and if you're looking for a heart attack, the smoker with its arsenal of bacon, gouda, and roasted garlic aioli is a near guarantee. I've also tried a fair number of sides and generally go for the side salad just because the burgers are so big. I do enjoy the fries, though, and would especially recommend the Cajun fries, which are generously seasoned. The standard is good as well, with nice texture and salty potato. Prime also offers sweet potato fries, which are pleasant but a little less satisfying. If you're looking to indulge, you can get the truffle parmesan for a little extra. Grilled veggies are another healthy option that will cost you extra as well. On rare occasions, I've gotten a side of grilled veggies with a side of grilled chicken for a healthy, cheap meal. My most frequent order is the chopped salad with grilled chicken, which comes with candied walnuts and cranberries. It's good enough that I don't feel deprived when I could be having a burger. The grilled chicken is really excellent. That said, the burger is the way to go. Just be warned that the service stinks so much that sometimes Prime isn't worth a visit. It was better in the last couple months because of the New Haven summer lull, so I'm only docking one emphatic star. I'll also mention that the vibrant atmosphere and extensive beer list are great assets, but the stellar burgers should be enough to get you in the door. Two columns of burgs on the menu divide the beef from the etcetera, splitting options like Maui, Cowboy and Honey Truffle (all based on a 100% all natural Angus patty) from the Badlands (bison), Turkey, Lamb, Salmon, Crab Cake and Half Bacon (take a guess) varieties. And yes, veg heads, they rock a house-made Mushroom & Pecan Veggie Burger. You can sit with us carnies. Every sandwich comes with a side, and rides between $10 and $14. Went with the Stuffed Mushroom boyga, said Angus "stuffed with crimini mushrooms and shallots," slapped with a little Swiss and because I was good this year, roasted portobellos on top. Went with a side sal to cleanse the arteries, but based on my fellow Yelpers recommendations, sweet potato fries are where it's at. Overall, I was a little disappointed. The meat's overcooked and the alleged mushroom stuffing is actually ground in to the beef, and doesn't bring much to the final product. I found it bland, took the to NaCl and called it a day. Sob. Which brings me to truth in advertising - if something is billed as stuffed, there should be said stuffing in its own pocket within a given medium. A stuffed teddy bear is stuffed with cotton; it is not bits of ursine matter tossed with fluffy matter and formed in to a bear shape. Sorry Prime 16, that myth is busted. Service is fine. Needed a place for a quick lunch and a beer. I forget why I had Prime 16 bookmarked, but it was walking distance to where I was and I had a hankering for a burger and a beer. I sat at the bar and talked local beers with the bartender, who was a cool guy. Ended up getting a Kent Falls Shruggie ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, which is just about the best name ever for a beer. For food, ordered the honey truffle burger, which had swiss, applewood bacon and julienned honey truffle potato chips (basically potato sticks. Tasty, tasty potato sticks). The burger was great, but very messy due to the chips making everything slide around. Generous portions of everything on the burger as well. I subbed out the fries with garlic kale (cuz obviously I'm a health nut), which was a litlte bland, but nothing some salt and pepper couldn't fix. As per usual Louis' Lunch was closed so, we ventured with our Yelp App. Frank Pepe Pizzeria's line was 20 people deep so, pass that. Voila, Prime 16. Our appetizer of chili was pretty weak and wouldn't order again yet my $13 buffalo burger was delicious. They have about 20 options of burgers and an option to build your own burger as well with some great but regular add ons including bacon, avocado, mushrooms etc... The bison burger in which went directly into my belly in 5 bites flat included fried onions, cheese and a special sauce. The bun was A-ok. Multigrain and nothing to write home about but, wasn't horrible. The sweet potato fries were MONEY. Order those. The regular fries were decent. I went 50-50 on 'em which is pretty awesome that was even an option though I did ask if I could do the sweet potato fries with cajun fries and got shot down. Eh oh well. I wasn't drinking from their super long craft beer list but, I ordered a diet coke which was $2 with $.95 refills which I just don't understand. I'm not a huge fan of restaurants that charge arms & legs for fountain soda, kind of cheapens the place in my opinion. Just sayin'. These people really have me at Happy Hour. High quality brew for Budweiser prices! Not to mention their Happy Hour food and snack menus are amazing! Attended a small gathering at the bar area -- we were served a variety of appetizers, including the buffalo chicken skewers, fried cheese something, tacos, and buffalo cauliflower. The appetizers were the perfect start to our meal! Next, we had the sliders along with fries and tater tots -- the sliders were a perfect balance of bread, patty, and veggie toppings, and the fries/tater tots came out in little fryers and were topped with parmesan which was awesome. Determined to have our burgers, we found Prime 16. Located right by Yale, it's very much a college student spot. Knowing that, I wasn't expecting much. But my truffled porcini burger turned out to be really good - patty was juicy, bun was soft and toasty, and the accompanying mushroom/cheese/truffle oil combination was perfect. The fries were also delicious and the side salad surprisingly fresh. Though I had ordered my burger medium rare, it arrived way over done. Before dinner we ordered a Wolaver's Organic Wildflower, a New England Brewary Ghandi Bot, and a Southern Tier Unearthly. During the meal we enjoyed an Allagash Confluence, Lagunitas Undercover Shutdown Ale, and Stone IPA, and by then I was too drunk to make a note of the different beers in my phone. The burgers were equally awesome. I don't eat beef so I ordered a turkey burger, and my boyfriend got some specialty burger on a pretzel roll. He didn't talk to me for about 20 minutes while he ate so I imagine it was really good. Highly recommend this amazing spot! Not only is the food incredibly tasty, but the servers are AWESOME!! My friend and I were visiting from the NYC/NJ area and came to this spot both days we stayed in new haven. If I'm ever back in town, I would absolutely return here. We had Alexa as our server the first day and she was just a lovely, bubbly, human being. I had the cajun melt and my friend got the fried sweet plantains. Both 10/10. The next day I had Mia as my server and everything she recommended was top tier. The Mc pollo chicken sandwich is a must, along with the pretzel and "awkward hug" beer on tap. We returned later that night for drinks and Frank was our server at the bar. Absolutely hilarious guy. I wish this place and staff were here in our area, we'd be regulars! Too bad I ate my food so quickly, I forgot to take a picture. The menu is huge and picking exactly what you want will be next to impossible so come prepared for that! In the end, I chose "the cowboy burger". I added goat cheese and dill pickle chips to my burger and also got the Parmesan truffle fries with garlic aoli. Adding the goat cheese was an excellent idea and it mixed with the fried egg perfectly! This burger was delicious and so juicy and melted in my mouth! The garlic aoli had just the right amount of garlic and really was tasty with the truffle parmesan fries! All of the food was excellent, came out quick, and the staff was great! My burgers always fall apart when we go here. But....it's my own fault. J always tells me I get too much on my burgers...can I help it I like cheese,avocado, bacon,lettuce, tomato, fried onion and mayo? Put it on a pretzel bun (oh evil gluten) and give me the cow rare and I am one happy camper. A side of half and half fries and I won't talk for a half hour...a rare feat in my world. Think I like Prime 16? Cause I do. It's small and intimate and always crowded...but, unless you are in the bar, it never feels that way. The waitresses are always nice and service is pretty quick. J can get a 4 dollar Guinness during happy hour which makes him happy too. Last time we went, we split an app of mac and cheese...and it was pretty darn good. Our waitress said she was working on them to put it on the regular menu(it was a special)...and I really hope it worked. Best Burger ever? No...that would be Burger Bar in Vegas (or In and Out if you want to include "fast food"). But a really good burger for New Haven! read more
