My friend and I came for coffee/dessert to catch up. I had coffee before meeting up, so I opted for frozen yogurt - got black sesame. I did really enjoy it - but do feel it could've had some more flavor. Next time, I'll have to try something with matcha given the name of the place!!! The place was really clean and had enough space for both our strollers! Will definitely be back for another sweet treat!
The interior is cute and has a nice vibe. I ordered a black sesame latte and it was undrinkable. Ended up throwing it out. Maybe I'm mistaken but I thought since it was a latte there would be coffee in it but it's his milk and black sesame. The matcha was okay. Not amazing but at least drinkable. Overall definitely won't come back. Aesthetics are cute but taste is not there.

And I even got to sit next to the lucky cat :) Delightful menu with a lot of great options for specials on flavors for their soft serve and shaved ice - I tried the oolong tea with ube and matcha shaved ice with mochi and matcha brownie/cake. WOW my eyes were bugging out of my face when I got there. I still wanted more. Need to come back! The staff definitely stayed composed while this all went down, but I hope they got a kick out of my merriness at least :) Definitely a nice spot to meet with friends and have a cool treat and good for groups too!

The seasonal lychee flavor was also very good. They also had ube and other kinds of dessert. Service was really good even though they were super busy. Almost all the seats were full, but we were still able to get a table on a busy Friday night. There's a big free parking lot for the plaza, which is very nice. If you want matcha, definitely go here!

It was creamy, sweet, and bold. My matcha yuzu was refreshing and bold in flavor but the consistency was a bit off. I don't think my matcha powder was mixed thoroughly. The quality of the matcha is great though. I will still come back and try their soft serve next time.

You can definitely tell they use high quality matcha here, and the ice cream is delicious! The drink itself was okay, I let my ice cream melt into my drink more and it was better after that. Overall, I would visit again. Maybe not for a matcha drink, but for their ice cream.

Hit up Premium Matcha Cafe Maiko for the first time last week. It's a cute spot, located in busy plaza in Tempe. on ASU Campus, and teh traffic reflects that. Parking can be a little chaotic, but there is a lot of great spots in this area, so honestly, I get it. It's located on the first floor, underneath Society and to the right of Blick's. The space is bright, clean abd provides ample seating, so i can see this being a great spot to cowork or meet with friends! They have a pretty vast menu of Matcha offerings, from floats, ice cream, lattes, tea's, shaved ice, as well as other soft servce ice cream flavors including ube, jasmine tea, classic vanilla (with the option to swirl!). You can also get pints to go, which is pretty cool! I got a strawberry iced matcha latte. All drinks to come presweetened, but I do wish they had a scale to allow a bit more customization, since it's such a relative thing. I asked for lightly, but did have to ask for a bit more after taste testing! Though it was iced, it came out sort of lukecold and most the ice was melted, so that was a bit disappointing, My friend got the strawberry matcha ice cream float with Matcha ice cream, which honestly was far more stand out! THe ice cream is so good, but the entire thing was MASSIVE, I think i'd have a major stomach ache after having the entire thing. THe prices are relatively on pair for more cafe's, maybe a tad more. With the small iced strawberry matcha latte coming in at $7.25 and the float at about $9. Overall very cute space, not the most amazing matcha latte I have had, but worth it if in the area, and deifnitely worth it if you want some matcha ice cream!
This cafe was bustling with people and some were even working. They had so many matcha options even one that tasted like "toasted matcha" we were super happy with our custom latte and the girl behind the counter was so helpful! She was super kind and let us try samples and explained everything to us about the different flavors and how to order. Their menu is huge! No food at this cafe but they have drinks and dessert drinks. We will be back!
Wonderful place! Asked for unsweetened matcha for strawberry matcha latte and it came out great. Since strawberry "jam" already has sugar it's enough for a matcha. So happy for ASU students, who can enjoy matcha ice-cream and drinks here
Love Premium Matcha Cafe Maiko! I recently went to Japan and learned more about the cuisine and appreciated this even more afterwards. The Matcha tastes just like it does in Japan and stands out from other cafés in town that serve Matcha. I went when Premium Matcha Cafe Maiko first opened and a couple years later and the quality is consistent. The ice cream is very creamy with balanced flavor and the Matcha tea drinks are strong but not bitter or gritty. I really love the shaved ice and the float! I recommend Premium Matcha Cafe Maiko and would choose this establishment every single time when I have a craving for Matcha, Hojicha, or a Japanese sweet!

The matcha overall was good but I must complain about the greediness of this business. I ordered the Strawberry Dream almost didn't get the strawberry on top. I asked the waitress and she gave me like 1 scoop. There wasn't even people in line. Also it was around 9 pm and there was no seating inside... I WOULD LIKE TO EMPHASIZE THAT I WANTED THE MANGO STICKY RICE MATCHA BUT IT WAS NOT AVAILABLE IF YOU KNOW PEOPLE BUY A CERTAIN ORDER YOU SHOULD BE PREPARED TO SERVE ENOUGH IT. read more

I discovered this place by accident and decided to pop in. I'm not familiar with this place as I'm still a new resident to Arizona but I just so happened to go to Improv Tempe right above this place and after the comedy show, I stopped by here to get a drink. The ambiance is social and might feel more college-like, understandably but don't let that stop you from ordering anything. My green tea matcha latte was actually really good. I didn't have any issues with service or ordering even though I kept my order simple since I'm not familiar with their menu (yet). From my limited experience here, it was good. The establishment feels almost hidden if you're new or curious about it. But go check it out for yourself and let me know how their matcha ice cream is. I'll eventually be back again. read more

Parking in this plaza is always crazy, I usually park far and just walk so I don't have to deal with the hassle of fighting for parking spots. This plaza has plently of good spots as well as ramen, and Yifang (boba). I really like this place for their matcha and ice cream, but a couple of times the matcha powder wasn't fully broken down, which is my only complaint about these drinks. Sometimes its perfect and sometimes it needs more mix. However, I do love the flavor and how they make their drinks. I even bought a bag of matcha for myself too! Came here after dinner last night. Located in a very busy plaza, Matcha Cafe Maiko offers matcha based desserts also featuring other flavors such as ube, Thai tea. Hubs and I both had matcha and ube swirl ice cream with cone. It's the perfect ice cream cone, not too sweet, matcha and ube mix was surprisingly good. Service is quick too. Ambiance is nice, has a wide range of available desserts and drinks. The only con is the parking. read more
I first tried Matcha Maiko in Cali about 4 years ago before it opened here in AZ. Then again at this location after it opened. It's been a few years. We stopped in Saturday after dinner since it was a short walk across the street. Order: Matcha float w/ ube ice cream Matcha cone Iced Matcha My matcha float needed more matcha. The matcha also wasn't whisked well. The ube swirl on top was delicious though! Tasted even better when I mixed it in. It was a tad gritty though. My friend's matcha cone was pretty good. You can tell the grad of matcha used is high quality. My other friend realized right after he ordered his iced matcha that he shoulda got the float instead. I think now that I've tried other matcha spots, this one is just okay. I'm not sure why my hojicha is not tasting like the first time. The hai tea ice cream was good, I like that it wasn't too sweet. The combo didn't go well, but next time just the ice cream will do! read more

Premium Matcha Cafe Maiko has other locations, and I feel like the quality is the same for all. AND the matcha is actually top tier -- it is the closest to authentic matcha in Japan. I feel spoiled because I had matcha in Japan everyday for two weeks just two months ago, so hopefully that says something about good it is here in comparison to other places! I've tried the iced matcha tea, iced matcha latte, matcha/thai tea soft serve and matcha tiramisu here, and all of them are a hit! I'm an iced matcha latte girly, but I actually prefer the iced matcha tea here. It's not too sweet where it tastes artificial, but doesn't have a bitter taste. The workers are always so sweet and it's a spacious spot where people hang out, and even study. read more

Heard this spot had premium matcha, so I had to stop by. We ordered the matcha float and matcha latte float. Both were really good and definitely good quality matcha. I'd get the matcha soft serve next time, that's how good the matcha ice cream was on the float. They also have lattes, floats and teas. Inside there's a good amount of seats/tables to get some work done. Unfortunately there's no outdoor seating. If you're in the Tempe area, make sure to stop by and grab a matcha from here. read more

Came here on a Friday afternoon -Service was quick and staff was friendly -Nice seating and ambiance. Very clean and open. -Getting there was easy. Large parking lot -Treats were so tasty! Amazing matcha flavor. We had the Maiko special (half ube, half matcha) and half matcha, half vanilla soft serve. I also got a matcha latte with oat milk and it was so goood! 09/05/2025 I was so excited when Matcha Maiko opened in Tempe a couple of years ago because there really wasn't any matcha cafes in the East Valley at that time. However, I never made it over there, as they don't open until 11AM, and I prefer to drink my matcha early in the morning. Recently I was in the area around 1:00PM and stopped in for an afternoon pick-me-up. Since it was my first time there, I opted for just a 12 oz iced matcha latte with almond milk. The total was $8.03 because of the milk substitute and tip (don't remember how much tip I added). I don't mind if the quality of the matcha is good, but little did I know the default is sweetened matcha. I prefer a plain matcha latte, so that was disappointing. And due to the sweetness, I couldn't really tell how the quality was. They should really clarify on the menu that it comes sweetened, or list out sweetness options. I didn't think I needed to ask about it at a Japanese chain. I might give them another try when I'm in the area again, but I probably won't go out of my way to come here. read more

I got a large matcha latte ($7) and it came out in under 5 minutes. It was surprisingly a very good matcha used and not watered down. Very smooth and earthy. Staff was very nice. I went here two years ago and it's come up in my thoughts several times since. So I finally ventured back and was still in love with the desserts! I got the ube vanilla soft serve swirl with cheese foam. The soft serve is so creamy. I love the ube vanilla mix, it's not overly sweet. The cheese foam was a great addition if I do say so myself, added a little tang and the texture is, well foamy yes, but a little sticky to contrast the ice cream. The serving size is quite large but I had no issues finishing it all. :0 The inside of the store is clean, there's a good number of seats, and it was warmer in there in a great way since it's cold out and we're eating ice cream. High quality matcha treats at Premium Matcha Cafe Maiko @matchacafemaikoaz at 920 E University Dr Suite 106, Tempe, AZ 85288! Yummmmy! The ice cream is so creamy with large portions and good-quality matcha. I chose strawberry matcha because that combination goes so well together. I love it. My latte had bits of fresh, diced strawberry. We ordered: - Matcha Strawberry Latte Float 抹茶いちごラテフロート - Ube Latte 紫芋ラテ There's plenty of seating inside the cafe as well as on the patio, in front of the cafe. There are long seating area against one wall where students were studying with matcha treats. There's a close-caption tv and music playing at low volume. There's a gender-neutral restroom for customers. Service is very friendly and fast! read more

The black sesame latte was really good. I'm a sucker for black sesame. I got the ube ice cream on top, and really enjoyed it. They have good additiona like jelly & cheese Foam too. My biggest criticism is that there was WAY too much ice. I prefer milk tea with no ice. They also didn't have a restroom. Otherwise, top notch desserts, nice staff, and cute little cafe. read more
The matcha is really good. Way better than Starbucks. Arguably one of the top matcha places in AZ. The ambiance is alright. It's usually really busy, so if you're looking for a quiet place this may not be right for you. The problem is that they used to have wifi and removed it. So you can't work there anymore :(. Otherwise it would be 5 stars! read more

This place was a great visit! The matcha was really high quality, I got the ice cream cone and it was smooth and just sweet enough to not overpower the matcha flavor. They have a large menu and have other things like ube and hojicha which motivates me to come back and try something else. I loved how they were playing lofi anime videos which added a really nice ambiance and would make this a great study spot! read more

Yes and no. For drinks, they offer oat and almond milk. But unfortunately, their ice cream has dairy.

I just googled and they have options for dairy free options all you have to do is ask for almond milk matcha latte or iced matcha with no sugar.
Are there any business hours yet? I went on a day where on the door it said it should be open. On yelp it said a different opening time (though I was there after that time and it wasn't open). I cant wait to try it but with gas prices am reluctant.
