Estimate

TL;DR: After six years as a loyal Precision customer, I was charged $2,622 for 18 lbs of R-410A during an otherwise warranty-covered compressor replacement -- a markup I find difficult to justify. This experience permanently changed how I view the company: I no longer trust that being a long-term customer or purchasing an extended warranty will protect me from excessive pricing when I'm in an emergency and have little leverage. I've been a Precision customer for about six years. I purchased a 5-ton heat pump from them with an extended parts-and-labor warranty, and I've also spent roughly $4,000 with Precision on plumbing work, which I was very happy with. My original HVAC installation was generally good, although the condensate line was installed pitching away from the drain. For years, the safety switch would periodically trip and I would vacuum the line until I recently identified the improper pitch and corrected it myself. I never complained about it at the time. Mistakes happen, and HVAC work is difficult. I viewed this as a long-term customer-business relationship, and I've always expected both sides to meet each other halfway. Recently, my compressor failed. The compressor itself and the labor to replace it were covered under the warranty I had purchased. Refrigerant, however, was excluded. Precision charged me $226.32 for the first pound of R-410A and $140.94 for each additional pound -- $2,622.30 for 18 pounds of refrigerant. Wholesale cost seems to be about $10 per lb. To be fair, I signed the authorization. My house was approaching 90 degrees during 100+ degree weather, it was after hours, my compressor was dead, and my immediate concern was getting the system running again. Before I made the final payment, I contacted Precision and asked whether management would reconsider the refrigerant charge. Given my six-year history with the company, the extended warranty I had purchased, and the amount of business I had given them over the years, I wanted to try and make myself whole. Their position was essentially that I had signed the authorization. They are correct. I did. What I did not expect, after six years as a customer and after paying for an extended warranty, was to feel that I needed to independently research refrigerant pricing and negotiate defensively in the middle of an HVAC emergency just to make sure I was receiving a fair price. Signing an authorization settles the contractual issue. It does not settle whether the price was reasonable. After six years as a customer, I trusted Precision to quote me reasonably, and I did not expect that trust to require me to independently research and challenge their pricing in the middle of an HVAC emergency. I understand that Precision is a business. They have meaningful overhead. I do not expect them to sell refrigerant at wholesale cost, and I have absolutely no problem with a company making a healthy profit. But there is a difference between earning a healthy profit and charging $2,622.30 for 18 pounds of R-410A during a compressor replacement where the compressor and replacement labor were already covered by warranty. That is the part of this experience I cannot reconcile. I have difficulty accepting that charging $2,622 for 18 pounds of refrigerant was necessary for Precision to provide professional service while still earning a healthy profit. Smaller HVAC companies may be able to perform many of the same repairs for much less. Going forward, I would rather keep one or two portable air conditioners available so that, if my central system fails again, I can keep part of the house comfortable long enough to obtain a reasonable estimate rather than having to make a several-thousand-dollar decision under emergency conditions. Precision advertises "expert service and unmatched warranties." Customers should understand that even when a major component such as a compressor is covered, the excluded portions of the repair can still result in a very large bill. I also want to specifically recognize Efren, who performed the compressor replacement. He was outstanding -- knowledgeable, professional, candid, and clearly took pride in his work. My dissatisfaction is absolutely not with him. Precision has been responsive over the years and employs some very capable technicians. But after six years as a customer, thousands of dollars spent on additional services, and the condensate installation issue that I ultimately diagnosed and corrected myself, the relationship has begun to feel one-sided. I gave Precision the benefit of the doubt on that mistake and absorbed the time and effort of fixing it without complaint. After then receiving a $2,600 refrigerant bill on what was otherwise a warranty-covered compressor replacement, I no longer feel that the same consideration was extended to me. I'm no longer comfortable continuing to do business with them.

Precision's written claim of a 'reviewed call' - a recording they have never produced to me, the BBB, or the Attorney General.
Rick A.

Update - Oct 22, 2025: One of my calls with Precision's manager confirmed exactly what this issue comes down to. He admitted their technician took no notes to justify the recommendations and that refrigerant levels "should have been checked given the system's age." That's not my opinion--it's their own manager's statement. There were later calls too, but instead of addressing that clear admission, the company keeps twisting the story into side arguments that miss the point. Precision now claims they have a "recorded call" where I supposedly said another technician installed all their recommended parts. That's simply not true. No outside technician installed anything from their estimate--the only work performed was adding refrigerant and cleaning the coils, which fixed the issue they skipped, restoring proper performance. Coil cleaning was the only overlap with their estimate. If such a recording really existed, it would have been easy to share with the BBB or the Arizona Attorney General, yet none has ever been produced. Both agencies accept legally obtained recordings under Arizona's one-party-consent law (§13-3005). If transparency were the goal, releasing all recordings would have settled this immediately. The fact that they haven't speaks volumes. Finally, about the refund: Precision keeps saying they "paid me more than I asked for," but that's not the full story. When their manager couldn't explain how a prorate would be calculated, I estimated roughly $500--about what a fair one-year refund should have been on a four-year, $1,770 plan. Instead, they started with the full $1,770, subtracted $549.59 in old discounts from prior years, and called the remainder ($1,220) a "prorate." It looks generous on paper, but it's not based on any standard accounting method--it's a creative way to make the numbers appear higher while double-charging for benefits I'd already paid for. After ten years as a customer, I wish this had ended differently. Appreciate the partial step, but transparency--not spin--would have resolved this months ago. Consumers: Verify estimates independently--facts over claims.

BEWARE - RIPPED OFF!

Precision Air charged my girlfriend nearly $2k to install a soft start in the A/C unit they installed for us two years ago. I wish my girlfriend would have checked with me. I fixed the same problem with a $9 hard start capacitor in different A/C unit they installed for me a few years back. The hard start works great. They charged nearly $1186 for the Micro-Air soft start. Micro-Air sells only two soft start units. They are both listed on their website at prices of $389 and $345. That means Precision Air charged her either a 304% or 343% markup on the part alone. The invoice doesn't indicate which soft start they installed. They also charged more than $450 to install the soft start unit. The quick installation guide on Micro-Air's website provides simple instructions for anyone to install the unit in minutes. So I guess she paid over $2000/hr in labor for the installation. Finally, they claim to have charged her A/C unit with 2 lbs of R-410A refrigerant. Yep, the same A/C unit they installed 2 years ago. They provided no explanation for the additional refrigerant. They didn't find a leak. WTH??? There's either a leak or they didn't fully charge the system when they installed it. There is no other conceivable logic. I highly discourage anyone from using Precision Air for each of the reasons listed above. A screenshot of the redacted invoice we received from Precision Air is attached to this review. BEWARE!!! Precision Air ripped us off! They have no scruples. This case demonstrates that they are not concerned about providing a services or parts at reasonable prices.

Our SERVICE TECH for this bad experience.

A/C repairs were needed and they came right away and got things fixed. Pricing was reasonable and our club pricing was worth it.

To make matters worse, they said they couldn't turn the system back on and that we might have to wait until Monday for a full system replacement. This all happened on the Wednesday before the Fourth of July, with temperatures well into the triple digits. We have five kids and two dogs, and the thought of going several days without air conditioning was overwhelming. Thankfully, we decided to get a second opinion and called Airtime Cooling & Heating. Jacob came out, started his own evaluation without us telling him what the first company had diagnosed, and quickly impressed us. He simply turned the system back on, ran his own diagnostics, and gave us his honest opinion. His conclusion was completely different--our system did not need to be replaced. Not only did he get our AC running again, but he also took the time to explain what he believed had happened, what to watch for if it occurred again, and even walked us through how to troubleshoot it ourselves. That kind of honesty, education, and customer service is incredibly rare. Instead of facing what could have been a very expensive and unnecessary replacement, we paid for a diagnostic visit, got our AC back, and gained confidence in our system. Because of this experience, we've switched from our previous HVAC company to Airtime Cooling & Heating for all of our future maintenance and service. If Jacob is any indication of the quality of their technicians, they have earned a customer for life. Jacob was truly a 10 out of 10. He saved us from an unnecessary replacement, restored our AC when we needed it most, and treated us with honesty and respect. I can't recommend Airtime Cooling & Heating highly enough.

Then sent over invoice and charged for second visit that never happened (because they did not call us to schedule the security nd appointment). Now let's talk about the office employee. Candace was extremely rude and unprofessional overall then proceeded to hang up on me during conversation. Then when we called back and asked for a supervisor was placed on hold and hung up again. Calling a third time and asking Candace why she hung up she laughed and proceeded to say "you're mistaken. The phone call was complete."Needless to say, they also overcharged for work that was not actually done. when you try to use a small family on business compared to the big name companies, this is how you're treated. There is no accountability. I highly recommend you Do Not use Steve's ultimate air unless you want Candace to hang up on you and charge for services that did not happen.

I went onto Yelp to see if I could find contact information for a company I had used five years before when I owned a house only to find they had been taken over by another company I didn't know. Long story short I put AC repair into Yelp search not expecting to be able to submit a request to several companies for quotes. I was resigned to getting a response in the morning until lo and behold my phone rang with caller ID showing Ideal Air Conditioning. It was 9pm. I couldn't believe it! And it was an actual person on the line when I picked up. I can't remember her name but she was empathetic and helpful. Before I knew it she had scheduled a service person to come in the morning between 8 and noon. What a relief! The service person got to my condo around 9:30 just before I had to head to work so I left my credit card info with her and entrusted my roommate to oversee the repairs. By 11am I got a call at work informing me that the AC was up and running again with the repair costing me just over $1500, which included a $300 service plan that I thought made sense and was a good idea for continued maintenance. The promptness of Ideal's response, their ability to get a service person out to see me almost immediately and how quickly they got the AC up and running has made me a fan for life. What could have been a stressful days long issue was fixed without delay. Highly recommend!
