I just want to do a shout out to Prairie Grass and chefs Sarah Stegner and George Bumbaris. We ordered a lot of sides from them for Thanksgiving, and they were all absolutely wonderful. If they offer this again next year, I will absolutely do it again. The mashed potatoes and gravy, the brussels sprouts with chestnuts were both soooo delicious! And the pumpkin pie was amazing! It made the thanksgiving dinner a lot easier having some prepared dishes. I'm sure it must have been hard for them to do all of this on Thanksgiving morning, getting all orders fulfilled to such a high quality level. Pre-pandemic we liked to come to Prairie Grass for a slightly nicer dinner, sometimes with our kids and sometimes just as a couple/date night. Last night, a random Tuesday, my daughter and I decided to go with another friend and her daughter. When we phoned we asked to sit outside at 7PM. They said they could only do 7:30. Ok. We waited. On arrival the restaurant was mostly empty. There was not a single person dining outside. Not one. Why the wait? I doubt at 7 the place was full and hopping. Why did they make us wait til 7:30? Then the menu came. Obviously inflation has hit this place hard. It is smaller and very expensive, like really expensive. Want bread which used to be free? $3 charge. Chicken cutlets? $24. Care for a steak? $55. Dinner for two without drinks, salad or appetizer was $80. The food was tasty. Our server was friendly. We were four people sitting alone under a tent. Inside I noted only old people, no young families, no couples, no people meeting up as friends. I believe the restaurant has been hit hard by the pandemic. It makes me sad but I can't say I'm super enthused to go out for a slightly nicer dinner at these prices. Made a reservation for 5 for this restaurant. As soon as we arrived, immediately noticed folks with CCW permits are not allowed so I had to go back to my car and leave it there. First and last time will visit a place that discriminates against CCW carriers. OK that said, I ordered the White Fish Dinner, don't remember the exact name but as far as taste, it was marginally better than the Army food I had when I served in the Armed Forces more than 30 years ago. The veggies were also nothing to write home about as well. The only item that was good was the double layer chocholate cake I had. I do not hand out five stars easily but I stopped in for dinner with some business colleagues from out of town and I have to say, besides being seated immediately, everything from the beverages, to the starters, to the entrees, to the dessert, presented to us was absolutely stellar and perfectly prepared. My brunch life has suffered since moving to the burbs. Mostly because our move coincided with the birth of kid #2 and brunch with 2 kids (now toddler age) is NOT enjoyable. It also took me awhile to find omelettes, pancakes and other brunch goodness that's comparable to what I've found back in the city. But recently I've discovered some good spots...Prairie Grass Cafe at the top of the list. Our party of 6 (4 adults, 2 kiddies) made a reservation just a few hours beforehand. Not sure if it was entirely necessary, but they were pretty busy this particular Sunday at 11am. The kids stayed busy for about 3 minutes coloring (or eating the crayons for my 17 month old). Then they were ready to eat, but unfortunately our waitress moved at snail pace and it took forever for her to take our order. Once she finally did our food came out relatively quickly and it was worth whatever wait. My egg white omelette (I added a bit of cheddar cheese) was sooo good...like ate every last bite good. My husband ordered the same thing and was really pleased. They have a great kids menu with some incredibly healthy options (and a steal at $4!), but of course my kids wanted the waffle. I sneaked a few bites and it was a very tasty waffle. I'm impressed and plan to go back soon for more brunch...the dinner menu looks promising too. read more

Went here after shopping at Northbrook Court with a friend. He had seen this place on Tv and we thought we should give it a try. The place itself is tucked away behind some corporate buildings and has a side front display entrance. Once you walk inside you immediately see the hostess stand and the bar area on the left with some tables off to the left. On the right is more seating tables and booths. Once we were seated Kate came over and asked us what we would like to drink. She is wonderful and very knowledgable. I chose a glass of Riesling and the Parmesan Crusted Tilapia. The Tilapia was perfectly prepared and had a side of creamed spinach. Delicious. Before we received are food since it was our first time here Kate brought us a bowl of Lentil Soup. I thought the gesture was very sweet and a excellent way to give us a warm welcome. Overall a very well kept atmosphere, excellent wine and a perfect meal. read more

Have been to PGC many times. This Wednesday I did a quarantine pick up. Called a couple of hours ahead for the burger. I think it was two dollars more to add a Caesar salad. They gave me my pick up time and told me to pull up front and call when I got there. I arrived about a minute before my scheduled pick up time and called. A gentleman brought my order out and put it in the passenger side window. I had previously added a five dollar tip as well. My home is a short ride away and my order was perfect. Burger was cooked medium rare and just as delicious as if I would've eaten in the restaurant. Came with two large potato wedges, Grilled onion and large tomato slice. (There were two Bentley's in the lot, while I was there and a few other luxury cars) Service was good and the decor of the place was trendy. My gal pal is a decorator, she took issue with a few things, but I thought it was a nice place to dine, also perfect for a group dinner. We ordered a few cocktails which were poured with a slightly heavy hand, the dirty martini was good but a few of the house prepared drinks weren't to my liking. The attentive server offered to bring me something I liked instead, but, I didn't want to bother much with tasting many cocktails. She went with a crusted chicken breast topped with a vegetable sauce which she loved and I went with the PGC fish and chips which just struck me as okay. Four huge pieces which were prepared perfectly with a side of crunchy veg slaw and three big potato wedges. While the flaky white fish was somewhat tasty, the homemade tartar sauce did not work for me. All in all, it was an okay experience but I couldn't see going back out there for anything else. Great atmosphere, food, and service! I had Chicago magazine's best burger without bun for my late lunch. It was after 2pm and finished lunch time menu, but I was still able to get a burger. Burger was greeeeat!!! Combination of blue cheese and burger created a nice salty taste :) Even though it was without bun, it still came with some bread. I came here with about 20 people from work for a team dinner. They were very accommodating by putting us at a long table tucked away in the corner which was nice. The servers were all friendly and got our orders served promptly and correctly which is always very nice when you have such a large group of people. However, it is a restaurant and the food was not that great and quite expensive. I had the marinated local beet salad which was very basic. My co-workers ordered all different items like burgers, fish and chips, and pasta dishes. No one was really impressed with any of the dishes. I don't have a lot of experience with good restaurants in the suburbs, so this was a pleasant surprise on a visit from the city. The food was all very good, with one of the best (fresh) chocolate lava cakes around. Many restaurants these days make the cakes in advance and then put in the microwave prior to serving, however Prairie Grass gets it right so the exterior is flaky and the middle oozes. My husband attended a business dinner here several weeks ago and said the food was very good. Sunday morning - here we come! Reservations: I called ahead asking if I need reservations for breakfast and was told that if we get there around the time the open (9:30am), there will be available seating. They were right. And as we ate our breakfast, more and more people came in but it still was not completely full. Space: Non-descript and somewhat tucked-in building that is not readily visible from the street. The interior is upscale, but not too formal; spacious with high ceilings. Greeting: As soon as walked in the door we were greeted by the host and escorted to the table. Service: Our waiter came to our table right away, poured water into our glasses and told us about the specials. He was pleasant and enthusiastic the entire time. At the end of the meal, he offered dessert. Yeah, he assessed us right:) Food: My husband is not a gushy type, but he said the word DELICIOUS many, many times. I have to agree. Our over-medium eggs were done perfectly. His skirt steak was very flavorful and tender. My chilaquiles were good, however, I would have added more cheese in between layers. The Top Sirloin burger, which I ordered despite the several negative reviews on Yelp, turned out to be pretty good. The melted blue cheese topping was baked well into the top of the thick burger and added a nice tang. The warmed tomato slice was thick and also surprisingly good, as I'm normally not a big tomato fan. The thick grilled onion slice was decent, but a bit on the greasy side. The large potato wedges were dry and not eaten. My table mates had the Fish and Chips and the Crispy Boneless Chicken Breast. The fish was quite tender and flaky, and came with quite a mound of interesting and tasty cole slaw. The large potato wedges were dry and not eaten. The boneless chicken was very moist and done perfectly. It came with grilled brussel sprouts and wild rice, both very good and in ample portions. We had the (seasonal?) Butternut Squash soup, which was a perfect texture, very tasty, and topped with a sprinkle of toasted seeds (sunflower?). Overall, the food was quite good and the service fine. The prices for what we got were on the pricey side for this area, but not outrageous. I've seen plenty of reviews for PCG negatively mentioning the potato wedges, and I took away one star for them still not recognizing that this part of several entrees just isn't up to par. read more

Went here for our anniversary, very nice looking restaurant inside, the food was excellent very tasty and well thought out preparations outside of the ordinary norm at most restaurants. My only big issue was the poor service by our waiter Ansar. This guy was so inattentive it was angering. When he would actually finally come by once in a blue moon, he would drop something so quick and leave you wouldn't even have a chance to ask him for anything. It was the type of service you get from someone that doesn't care because their tip is guarantee almost or hates being a waiter. The bus boys were excellent constantly walking around and grabbing things from tables. Our waiter was the only issue but a big one. The service is the reason I wouldn't come back here, at these price points I want service and good food, too many options out there to pay these kind of prices and get crappy service. read more

Hands down the best waffle I have ever had. If I go out for breakfast, I'm always going to pick a waffle, even though they're not always so great. I've had waffles in Las Vegas hotels, the best breakfast restaurants in LA, Miami, NYC and I can honestly say this was by far my best experience yet. I want to give this place 5 stars but my waiter was horrible. Didn't offer us any of the specials, which we only heard about when another server was offering it to other guests after we ordered. My friend ordered the Lemon Ricotta pancakes and although I'm not a fan of pancakes, these were great. Very lemon-y. She also ordered the egg white omelet and she felt it wasn't anything special. If you in the mood for a filling salad I recommend the Skirt Steak Salad with Avocado, Roasted Peppers, Red Onion, Tortilla Strips; Avocado-Lime Dressing. I've tried this once and I'm a fan. Also, many of my colleagues that I go with order this every time. What a disappointment. I find the positive reviews stunningly inconsistent with our experience which was lousy. This isn't my first time at Prairie Grass. I had been there a few times years before but thought it had declined in quality so we stopped going. Then a few months ago friends brought us here for dinner and it was pretty good so we tried it again. Big mistake. First off, the food itself is aggressively mediocre. There were several different dishes and they ranged from low mediocre to medium mediocre. Everyone described their meals as nearly flavorless. For $36 I had the tasteless and undercooked halibut special. Sorry, but halibut is supposed to be cooked and not translucent. Mostly it was just taste-free. My wife had the duck. She described it as mostly flavorless. My son had the pasta bolognese which he described as mostly flavorless but with an unpleasant sweetness. You get the idea. Service was bad. Our waiter couldn't handle basic food allergy questions and was slow and not particularly responsive. I wouldn't accept this poor experience from a place charging half as much. But PG is expensive and so not worth it. Definitely not going back. read more

Soooo, We are here once a month or so, on Wednesday night, for the half off fresh ground sirloin burgers. They are huge, need to be medium rare, because they are sirloin and topped with bleu cheese. Served with potato wedges and grilled tomato. That is the great, and we only go on Wed. We have dined off the regular menu, and the food is real good, BUT, it looses a star for being over priced, and a boring room. The prices are what you would find in a hotel restaurant. Crazy. The food looked interesting and I liked that they use locally grown produce. There weren't as many options as I'd thought they'd have based on the listing, but my egg salad sandwich and salad was delicious and the staff was very friendly. Moderate price range. Glad I checked it out. I did want to try the lunch special (8 oz sirloin with lemon caper sauce atop arugula and greens) but I didn't want to roll into a food coma heading back to work. We have been there several times subsequent to the bad situation several years ago. The food is always good. We just returned and had another bad situation the food was great. We sat down and asked about specials. The waiter referred us to a card at the table. One of our friends then asked about a special 2for 1 hamburger that has been available. The waiter then explained the deal. I then asked him why did he not tell us when I asked about specials he had made some comment about that is only 'word of mouth'.
