The space is lovely. Wrought iron and interesting glass and lights, and it's talls, and there are cool windows, and a nice outdoor deck area, too. The food is pretty good. The tortillas themselves are great. I tried the mixed taco plate, so got to sample the brisket (amazing!!), the chicken (decent flavor but pretty dry dry dry), and the pork al pastor, which was very good, but not up to amazing levels. Strangely, they only provide one tortilla as the base for these small tacos (I'm used to getting two at taco trucks, etc). Made eating a bit messier/less stable. The rice/beans are served in an adorable little side dish/pan. They were underwhelming. Good flavor, but some of the rice was pretty crunchy/old. And because they're served separately (and the main side dish offered with most entrees) I wouldn't be surprised if they're not prepared much in advance and then just left to warm. So that was disappointing. There was a small dish of a smokey sweet with a little heat red sauce. Not sure which of the tacos this was intended for, but I'm pretty sure it's chipotle=based, and it was DELICIOUS. I tried it on everything (tacos, rice and beans, tortilla chips, guacamole). Yum. The green enchilades were also good. And the chicken's dryness was less of an issue because they were smothered in verde sauce.
The appetizer of guac was perfectly respetable. Not the most amazing thing ever, but definitely tasty. It's served in a lovely mortar, but obviously not prepared fresh in your own mortar. Prepared probably en masse in the back and then just placed in the mortar for your table. Lots of bright flavors, with some chopped tomatoes and cilantro.
The house margarita was a standout. Very tasty margarita mix (I'm guessing they make this in house. It was yummy). And strong enough that I was giggling by the end of dinner.
Prices were fine. Not super cheap, but very approachable at $10-$14 for entrees. Although, when some of the items (rice and beans, I'm looking at you. You also, dry chicken) don't feel super fresh/amazing, it's hard to pay more than double the prices from Rancho Bravo just one block away. Here, you're definitely paying a surcharge for ambience (which is lovely). One other quibble: the rounded booths have a fixed table, so you can't scoot it further out. This made accomodating my pregnant friend a bit difficult. And I'd think with America's growing obesity rates, that larger patrons should AVOID THE BOOTHS and stick to a table/chair or you won't fit.
Unlike some of the reviewers, we had nice/polite service. However, they did completely forget our guacamole order, which we ordered AS WE SAT DOWN. So, we got our drinks. Then waited 10 minutes and got our entrees. At which point our waiter noticed we didn't have our guac yet, and got that to us right away. But it did mean we had a full table, rather than a pleasant appetizer followed by entree scenario. bit of a shame. read more
