I work in the city and I had never tried this place. Decided to give it a try and I must say, it was great! Personally, I love hole-in-the-wall places. They always feel more "homey" if that makes sense. I actually called ahead to order. Got a breakfast burrito with bacon and extra cheese. Very reasonably priced for the amount of food you get. Plus it was delicious! Didn't have a million pounds of potato in it. I gotta say...I hate when restaurants put an obscene amount of potatoes in their burritos as fillers. This place had perfect ratio of everything. What made me give it 5 stars was the wonderfully friendly demeanor of the person on the phone who took my order, as well as the gentleman who gave me my food when I arrived. They close early; they don't have pie, the owner (manager?) guy was kind of mean to the waitress in front of the customers, but the food was homemade and the waitress said they've been in Downey for 67 years. This was actually not out first choice, but we glad we found Pop's!! It was a Saturday morning, Mother's day weekend. We drove up to Porto's for breakfast fairly early around 7 am. The line was horrendous and we should have known. Yelp to the rescue. We came across Pop's and it matched our criteria. It's not the biggest place but very accomodating. I had to order the Belgian waffle with berries and whipped cream. It was exactly as expected. Yummy! Coffee and refills came often...maybe too often. Always have good food and service here. Yeah it can get crowded and slow but it is a small business with good people working there. If you are in a fat hurry or want reservations go somewhere else! Too many places try to cover up a dried out cinnamon roll by drenching it with icing. Service was exemplary. The staff was courteous, welcoming and genuinely interested in meeting the customer's needs. There was plenty of staff working hard. No one was just standing around. Ambience was quaint. I'm always hoping first time visits end with a full belly and a new place to add to my list of favorite places to eat. Unfortunately Pop's will not be on my list. I ordered a waffle with fruit and whipped cream, the waffle was burnt on the bottom making it impossible to cut into. I brought it to our waitresses attention, she apologized and had another one made for me. The second waffle was fine. My daughter ordered the kids pancake meal and a side of fries. The pancakes were rubbery, impossible to cut into, the fries were bland. We sent her pancakes back and ordered a side of bacon instead. A mom and pop style cafe where your grandma is making a delicious breakfast for the family and you are the guest. This family ran establishment has great service, great food, and had a family friendly environment! Our server Theresa was phenomenal! She was hilarious, inviting, down to earth and great with recommendations. I highly suggest getting the Deep Fried French Toast! It's notorious in the yelp reviews and is a recommended breakfast item! The Deep Fried French Toast was delicious, buttery, lightly fried and a fluffy delicious meal fit for those who love French Toast! It's served with a cinnamon shaker to add as much cinnamon as you heart desires, I even put some of the fresh cinnamon in my coffee for more kick. My girlfriend ordered the pancakes and let me tell you...they are massive. She stated the pancakes were buttery, fluffy and melt in your mouth like your grandmother made them. As for eggs and bacon they were also delicious. The bacon was nice and crispy and the eggs were perfectly cooked. My girlfriend likes them "scrambled hard" and they did not miss the mark for her. They also offer a hot tea type of bar that was quite delightful with hot water and with numerously sorted teas. As for coffee it's your standard cafe coffee with Alta dena non dairy creamer. While the coffee is standard it was nice that they would refill it and would bring you fresh coffee which is always nice rather than having coffee that is sitting there on a heated plate. Overall, this establishment is inviting, the service makes you feel like part of the family and the food is incredible! Especially for the price you pay! I really was hoping to enjoy this restaurant but unfortunately it was eh. Pancakes were flavorless that even the kids didn't like it and they eat anything pancakes. Lol An order of pancakes was missing from the kids menu. Poached eggs had no running yolk but was drenched in hollandaise sauce. The Denver omelette was pretty decent but the muffin that came with it was stale.
