This place has absolutely delicious sandwiches and food in general, itactually burned down in the last couple or few years and so did a couple places nextdoor to it and I guess they're going to open up and be a MUCH bigger joint, which is good because they needed to expand but not move. This wil be great. I go here after getting masa next door at the Mexican market for holiday tamales and random times during the year. I also love going down the street to El Taco. My best friend of nearly 40yrs and I really enjoy a well made sandwich. In our pursuit of great sandos, we've tried Katz Deli in NYC, Brent's in Northridge and even the sorely missed but never forgotten Miller's East Coast Deli in San Francisco. So when, tasked with finding a suitable place for our quarterly lunch meeting, I entered "Jewish deli" and "Downey" into Yelp, half expecting to find the lackluster lineup of national chains that PURPORT to make good sandwiches- Subway, Joysie Mike's, Jimmy John's and the usual suspects of sandwich sorriness! Imagine then, fellow Yelpers, when Uncle Henry's Deli appeared...as welcome a sight as my gorgeous bikini-clad wifey. Both Mick and I, who first bonded over our shared love of the national pastime, immediately likened Henry's with the MLB legend who shares my birthday- Henry Louis Aaron, aka Hamnerin' Hank and the REAL all-time home run leader, Barry Bonds and his oversized gourd, er, head be damned. In his 22yr career, Aaron belied his average size (5ft 11 tall, 185 lbs) and deployed his missile-fast wrists to smack 755 homers. All while playing in Jim Crow era Atlanta. Uncle Henry's Deli, similarly, defies expectations. Who would think of putting a Jewish-style delicatessen in Downey, famous for birthing the honey-voiced Carpenters and the self-styled "Mexican Beverly Hills?!" Mick ordered a super sized Original, which is turkey, roast beef + ham plus cheddar on white. He went with potato wedges which are sizable. Me? I chose one hot, one cold. A super sized Big B (Pastrami, Bacon + Swiss on toasted sourdough, hold the pickles) and an Egg Salad on enviably well made squaw bread, hold the tomatoes. Pro Tip- From a lifetime of ordering well made sandos in every major city in America, never put tomatoes on a cold sandwich unless you want the notoriously water-dense fruit to dampen your sandwich! The only mild drawback of my food order was the side of potato salad, which in my opinion would benefit from some black pepper and minced celery. The service at Henry's is expedient- You've barely helped yourself to one of their dark wood benches when they've called your order! The restroom was, yes, as cozy as the overall venue...but sufficiently clean + stocked. Watch out, tho- The hot water runs hotter than the devil's temperature! In closing, you can take Uncle Henry's to the bank. Yes, you'll part with upwards of a Jackson, mebbe even two. But you'll enjoy the treat, cuz the caliber of food is very bit as real as the hammer (aka Louisville Slugger) that Hamnering Hank used to bash all of his home runs with. read more

Small little sandwich shop in Downey. You order through a kiosk so there's not really a ton of Customer Service. Although they seem nice enough. It's in a strip mall with decent enough parking. The food itself is pretty fantastic. If you were in the mood for deli sandwiches, they have a plethora of options which I would highly recommend. Italian Stallion: Stuffed with the meats and was delicious, except for the fact that they had a very tiny amount of onions and excessive amounts of oregano. Maybe if they increased the onion servings, added some mustard in here and decreased the oregano or even removed the oregano, this would be a five star sandwich. Been in business as long as I've been on this earth 66 years still has one of the family George running the show on this Saturday for my first time visit and he is an absolute wonderful host My brother lives in Downey. He's been there a few times boy oh boy the beer selection is unbelievable including paul aner one of the best hefes world on draft. This place is equal parts deli and sports bar/craft beer bar. The space, located in a strip mall, itself is not very huge, but it seriously might have the largest craft beer selection to square foot ratio I've ever seen. Everyone here from the deli to the beer counter is friendly. And so are the patrons/regulars. Came here after work finally after having this place bookmarked for years. I came specifically for the Russian River flight that included Pliny for President. I also ordered the Big B - a large hot pastrami sandwich. The sandwich was very delicious and so was the beer. I wish this place was closer to me and would love to come back multiple times. Even struck up a conversation with other people here and they are very cool. My only warning is that this place is so great and it's small, this place could get packed very easily. When you walk in it's like a small New York bodega meets a local bar. They have many tables where you can enjoy a beer & a sandwich. Many tv s to watch sports. I stopped in here last week for the first time and I had a tuna melt in mind. I was thinking of toasty bread and tuna that would taste like Poseidon himself caught. Well I got the opposite of that lol. My sourdough bread wasn't toasted. It was actually pretty soggy and the lettuce was limp. For $15 I expected a solid sandwich and I was pretty disappointed. It was my first visit today and I went in with high expectations because I'd heard nothing but amazing things about this place. I ordered a roast beef sandwich. When I got my order I asked if it was pastrami because it looked like pastrami, not roast beef. The young lady at the counter assured me it was roast beef After two very salty bites, I went back to the counter to ask again if it was roast beef because it was so salty. The young lady again said yes. The guy working next to her wearing a beanie asked her what I wanted. When she told him, he too said it was roast beef. I then commented on how salty it was, he said it was probably the au jus. I told him I thought the same, but even without the au jus it was salty. He replied and said "roast beef is salty" I said "I've never had salty roast beef" to which he replied "there's a first time for everything". Needless to say, I will not be returning. I would've tried it again, because sometimes your experience is based on what you order. But the lack of customer service is the reason I won't be back. Let me clear, I wasn't asking for a refund I was just asking if my sandwich was what I ordered. Very disappointed. It's a self order machine or you can order at the bar and when I ordered I guess I didn't see the option to have your bread toasted. So my bread was soft on a sandwich that had a lot of things in it. But I will say I'm not one of those "toast my bread and make my cold sandwich hot" type of gals but a little toastage would of went a long way. So that was on me I guess. Placed an order through postmates. One out of three sandwiches were wrong. I spoke with Diego the manager and he rudely responded, "Oh the driver picked up the wrong order. You can take it up with Postmates because it is a third party mistake." I was shocked at how unprofessional he was. First off, only one of the orders was wrong. Clearly it was a kitchen issue not a postmates issue. The deli made the mistake, however Diego did not want to take accountability for their mistake. EASY LUNCH ON NYE. 5/5 Yeah this place is phenomenal. I live nearby and it's nice to have a great lunch spot that's not Nexx or Domino's. Came from St. Louis to visit family for the holidays, I got the Beef Dip sandwich with peperoncino and onion to try to satisfy the Italian beef craving. Man they really knocked it out of the park. Toasted, buttered french roll with melted swiss, roast beef, and a flavorful jus to boot; they don't skimp on the jus either. And they add a few peperoncinos on the side too, a nice touch. Their smallest size was perfect for lunch; any bigger and you rack up the calorie count. To the owners: please add italian beef sandwich to the menu, or add giardiniera as an extra option!! I didn't try their beer but everyone seems to love it and the afternoon lunch hour on NYE was decently packed. My only suggestion for takeout is to rubber-band shut the lid OR plastic wrap the just container cause it did leak a bit.
