Bob's Big Boy brings back so memories of growing up in Southern Californian in the 80s and 90s. The one I grew up going to closed many years ago. This Downey location has been on my list of to go to places. Ive heard mixed reviews so I was not in a complete rush to go here. This location has been used for many movies, commercials and tv shows. I kinda thought it was a tourist trap using that to keep busy. You know only going there because movie was filmed here. My son & I were in the area and decided to give it a try. When I walked in it was it was like I was transported back to my youth. Everything from the jut-box, booths, counter, stone wall and whole atmosphere was like back in the day. For a Saturday afternoon we seated immediately, so that was very impressive. Looking over the menu there were so many choices. I choose the triple decker turkey sandwich. I'm back to review this place after years and years of coming and seeing and experiencing the ups and downs. I am very disappointed their wheat pancakes with nuts are gone. They were so delicious! I ordered the breaded chicken dish and it was all bad. Nothing good about it. Their salads are basic and a waste of money. The bright red (not normal looking) piece of tomato fell on my baby's blanket by accident and I have yet to be able to take off the stain. What kind of chemically processed tomato are they serving!? I've scrubbed and used all kinds of soaps and nothing..... The chicken seasoning was just a ton of seasoned salt on top of the chicken. I also got the burger which is just what everyone should stick to. It's the best thing they have. I keep coming back because there is always seating available and it's easy to dine in but I ALWAYS hate using their restroom. They have not put any money into making it look or smell nice. The drains always smell like sewage. And the worst of it is that now that I have a baby, I went into to change his diaper and no changing table in sight. I thought this was a family restaurant. What needs to be improved is either remove your drive-thru or actually have somebody that knows how to run that point of sale system. Not everybody wants to walk in and sit down in the restaurant. Thei service is slow. Also, beware of ordering through an app. They have a tendency of canceling orders. Seriously unimpressed I don't know how they stay open. Highly recommend a very old school style of restaurant with their designs but a fresh modern style menu with great food. Music plays at a great level the service amazing from Ms. Liz. Breakfast looked amazing but great call on the buffalo chicken sandwich with fresh ingredients and their own great tasting ranch. The burger was a great combination with the peppers slightly grilled so it still had a crunch and the complimenting elements of the bacon, cheese and bbq sauce was a balance like none other. Beyond AMAZING! From the incredibly friendly and attentive staff, to the owner coming around talking to every table, to made from scratch everything food. I had the steak and chilaquiles with green sauce. A very generous portion of grilled to the perfect med rare steak. The beans are made from scratch and were so delicious. The chips were made there too! The green sauce and crema were so fresh. I had their made fresh cafe olla for the first time. New favorite coffee. We live in Santa Clarita and I will for sure make the drive just to eat this meal again. Whenever my family go to LA, we drive through Downey just to go to a Bob's Big Boy. This location always seems to hit the spot when it comes to reminiscing, about being back in the 80s and prior. The waitress was very kind and professional, & did a super job modifying any requests for the burger. I've eaten here a few times, and I think I come back mainly for the brownie fudge ice cream cake. I don't understand why the fudge is so delicious topped with the whipped cream, and extra cherries! I wasn't a good mood until I came here it's Friday morning around 10:30 I haven't been here in a long time I used to love coming here to eat and hang out at the cruise night with the cars and all that stuff so I walk in take the first seat at the counter I see waitresses and servers running around and before you know it 5 minutes goes by 10 minutes goes by finally at that point a lady actually asks me what I want to drink I said could I have some coffee please and guess what the coffee never shows up so at that point I left if it's going to take that long just to get a cup of coffee you can only imagine how long it's going to take to get it actual breakfast served I don't know what happened this place was never like this as far as the speed of the service and the girl that asked me finally about bringing me some coffee had enough attitude in her face you could just see that she did not want to be there it's sad because it took me a while to come out here cuz I live in Orange County and now I probably won't come back again because this was no good that's about all I can say read more

Nostalgia Plus I grew up with Big Boys and their amazing Big Boy Burger and was sad when most of them disappeared. But now like they said in Austin Powers, "Well, in many ways, the Big Boy never left, sir. He's always offered the same high-quality meals at competitive prices." Haven't been to this location in ten years so during a visit to So Ca I stopped by last week. The place still looks great, is clean, affordable and of course is iconic. The waiter Jose wasn't busy so we chatted and he was very friendly and helpful. The big Boy burger was great, the onion rings, meh but overall I'd go back w my wife next time we are in town. I remember the first Bob's I went to as a little kid with my parents in Lakewood which is long gone. I was so happy to see it come to Downey many years later. I grew up and went to school in Downey. This used to be a Harvey's Broiler, then Johnnie's Broiler. This restaurant is definitely nostalgic with the surroundings and the service was great. The food is as I remembered it. The Bob's Big Boy is the original double decker burger I remember which McDonald's copied with the Big Mac but not near as good. I love the chili spaghetti although I do a version of Cincinnati chili which has more depth of flavor but I still dig this dish at Bob's. I love the garlic cheese toast. I also used to like the Pappy Parker's Fried Chicken but this place doesn't do that. I guess there are only four Bob's left in SoCal and maybe the rest of the country. Food is good, but if you come for breakfast bring your own coffee. Not sure what happened we used to come all the time and coffee was good but now it's super light and does not taste like coffee at all. Asked for new coffee and they brewed a new one but it was the same not good, just looked like coffee tea, Manager said that's how they make it. It has been a long while since I have visited. The restaurant is still clean and the staff is as friendly as I remember. Unfortunately, their vegetarian options have diminished. Gone is their veggie patty that could be substituted on any burger. Also, they had a green salad with fresh apple which was great. That is also gone. A word of caution to those ordering the chilaquilles; the green sauce now contains pork. The red sauce would be the way to go if you dont eat meat or pork.
