Pieloon's is one of my favorite restaurants in Downey, and it's my go-to spot almost every week. It's a true family restaurant, and you can tell because many of the family members work there and always make you feel welcome. Everyone is genuinely friendly, the service is excellent, and the warm, comfortable atmosphere makes it a great place to enjoy a meal. Whether you're stopping by for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert, everything on the menu is delicious. The strawberry waffles are incredible, topped with fresh strawberries and the creamiest whipped cream. Their breakfast burritos are always fresh and filling, and the chilaquiles are another favorite that never disappoints. Dinner is just as amazing. My favorite is the turkey dinner with stuffing--it tastes just like a homemade Thanksgiving meal. The sandwiches are also excellent for lunch, and no visit is complete without dessert. They have some of the best pies in all of Los Angeles. The strawberry pie is my absolute favorite, and when peach pie comes into season in July, I make sure to get one before it's gone because it's that good. Sad to have to write this review because I've been coming here for years but this place has really gone downhill recently. We dined on a Saturday for dinner and the food was mediocre and the service was bad. Our server was friendly but messed up a lot, starting with never bringing our soda order at all. When the food came, my BLT sandwich was slapped together messily, had one unripe tomato, and when I asked for cheese to be added, was told they don't have cheddar cheese slices. What kind of restaurant doesn't have cheddar cheese?! My friend's meatloaf tasted like cafeteria mystery meat and while the mushroom gravy was tasty, the meatloaf didn't have any tomato sauce topping or flavor which is my favorite part. We both ordered pie slices and I got the fresh peach pie at the waitress' recommendation. The pie came out and looked pretty but when I took a bite of a peach slice, it was hard and completely unripe and sour! They had literally just sliced up some hard peaches, threw them in a crust and drizzled a sugary syrup over it. And this pie is the most expensive slice at $9! I explained the issue and politely asked to switch for a different flavor of pie and was reluctantly accommodated. The worst part was when the bill came, it was just numbers typed on a receipt, and the server tried to charge us for the soda she never brought. We mentioned it and she apologized and brought a new paper receipt with more numbers but no explanation. I looked closer and noticed there was an extra charge of $7.99 on the bill so we had to ask the server a second time about the bill. She said it was a mistake and should have been $1.99 and not $7.99 but blamed it on their cash register buttons. That could have been true but it sounded fishy. The fact that she tried to overcharge us by sneaking $11 worth of items onto the bill like we wouldn't notice didn't sit well with us and we will not return. Pieloon is one of those places that sits under the radar for most folks, yet consistently delivers time after time. The place has been around forever. It has an extensive menu that might be problematic for some places, yet it works for them. Though they're known (and named) for their iconic pies, everything I've tried from their menu, I've enjoyed. We've been here a few times since we moved to Downey 6 years ago, Today I ordered the potato leek soup and honestly it seemed like an unseasoned bowl of watery mashed potatoes, The fried zucchini was fresh and enjoyable and my husband enjoyed his breakfast for dinner. I was noticing a couple at the table next to us the man was telling his partner that that he was overcharged and he let the waitress know so she fixed it, when we got our bill there was an extra charge of $3.79 as well, we called it to the attention of the cashier and she went over the bill and questioned us if we got anything extra until finally removing the charge No apology no explanation.. that's shady! I wonder how many people get overcharged without paying attention. Left a bad impression for sure. read more

This is me and my family's favorite breakfast place in town. My all time favorite is the Pieloon omelette with spud potatoes and their white toast. You have to ask for their pico de gallo to go along with your food - soooo delicious. Don't get me started on their pies too - they have the best pies!! I love their apple pie. My wife ordered hash and eggs and I went for the Chorizo and eggs. All the fixings come with that, choice or potato's reg or home style or beans. Choice of bread, we chose sourdough. Pieloon -- I Wanted to Love You, But... I've passed by Pieloon countless times and have seen it pop up on my friends' feeds, so I finally decided to stop in and see what all the buzz was about. Daily specials galore, too. Naturally, we had to sample a little bit of everything. Roast Turkey Plate: 6/10 The turkey itself was good, and the gravy had nice flavor. Unfortunately, the mashed potatoes tasted like they came from a mix, and the stuffing had that "old bread" taste. The cranberry sauce and garlic toast on the side were nice touches, though. Overall, good value but average execution. Sampler Platter: 7/10 This came with onion rings, mozzarella sticks, zucchini bites, and jalapeño poppers. Everything was crispy and fun to munch on, but it was just a bit over-fried. Tuna Sandwich on Squaw Bread: 6/10 The tuna was very cold and a little too "fishy," and the squaw bread tasted more like plain wheat. Not bad, but nothing special. Chicken Noodle Soup: 7/10 Simple, comforting, and tasty...but pretty standard diner fare. Service: Service was fine, if a bit detached. The staff seemed focused and busy, which I understand, but a little warmth or acknowledgment would've gone a long way. It's old school mom & pop dinner. My BF grew up in Downey and this restaurant went through covid, fires, and an oven explosion, it's still here. Service is fast and friendly. The staff greeted their regulars by name. We went for apps and pie for dinner. The next day we were back for breakfast for waffles!! The pies!! All flavors are excellent. Saw this place as I was driving by to get a coffee. Coffee line was out the door so I turned around and come here. Waited about 2 mins behind a party of 2 to be seated. Got a water quick and my waiter came over about a min after that. I looked over the menu and narrowed it down. I got the western burger without tomato. My food arrived about 10'ins after I placed my order. I guess my eyes were bigger than my stomach as I was only able to take 4 bites of my burger. It was piled high with toppings, including pickles (not listed) and 1000 island dressing (also not listed). The burger was juicy and had good taste. This was my first time visiting, and I ordered the Cherry Pie to go. It was delicious -- the flaky crust was my favorite part. The potato leek soup was okay, but I was surprised to see it served in a hot coffee cup with a taped lid. The to-go packaging felt a little unusual for soup. The garlic cheese bread was the standout -- absolutely the best part of my order. The only real disappointment was the cornbread. It tasted stale and dry, almost like a public-school-quality cornbread with a sawdust-like texture. I was genuinely surprised they would serve something of that quality. I've lived in Downey for 40 years and have never been to Pieloon! Now I know why. Part of this is my fault - once we were seated and had a chance to look at the menu our server came by, but I wasn't quite ready. It was another 7 minutes before she came back, and even then I had to raise up and get her attention. I ordered a side of ranch to go with my fries which she never brought altho she did remember later and apologized for not bringing it. They did not come back to check on our waters until we were about 95% done eating; and speaking of, my husband ordered soda water - you know, from the soda fountain - and they brought bottled without asking him! THIS IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE SLICE OF PIE IVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE! HOWEVER IT WAS AMAZING! While in downey, I really wanted something sweet. I am a cheesecake fanatic, so I went to my trusty Yelp to find something; Pieloon came up! Customer service: 4/5 When we first walked in, it seemed kind of dead and not so ...Happy? Lol. The woman who took our order seemed nice, she wasn't overly joyous or anything lol but she was nice...her coworkers ? Ehhhh not so much. I even tried to make small talk about their menu / what was good there, aaaand they weren't having it lol they wanted to talk to one another- so I just ordered my 1 slice of cheesecake and called it a day. The wait was actually longer than I expected. About 16 minutes? Maybe more. Price: 2/5 MY ONE SLICE OF CHEESECAKE WAS $9.11! Yes, NINE American dollars and eleven cents. I think that is absolutely ridiculous in my opinion lol I'm not sure where the price comes from..not the size..:nor the fruit... I'm not entirely sure. The pie: 5/5 My small regular slice of cheesecake was quite good, honestly I can say it was amazing! In fact it is one of the best I've ever had! My partner had no issues with buying my expensive slice of fruit cheesecake (lol! That is not the point!!) but I just feel like most places in LA (Urth Cafe) you get a big / amazing slice of cheesecake for 8.00/ 9.00 and Double the size. But I will say...this damn piece of cheesecake was pretty great. The crust was THICK and made so well! The graham cracker is my favorite part of a cheesecake. . The food is very good. We are repeat customers. Today we had the green chilaquiles. I love the small cut chips and the green sauce has a nice viscosity. I opted for the beans. They were good but I wasn't that hungry . We also ordered the potato skins. A little thick . And we are taking them home. Too much food. The country fried steak was well breaded and lots of gravy. This is a great spot for lunch! Parking lot is ok when it's not busy. I got one of the omelettes, and it was absolutely delicious! It was a lot more cheese than the thin layer of egg. Came for xmas dinner as it was one of the only places open and wanted to avoid eating more tamales at home. The place was packed We were seated right away and were served our drinks quickly. Our server was absolutely lovely! She was super busy yet, still attended to our needs ! The food was delish. They had a special xmas menu with all the fixing. We had lunch today. I had salad with half a turkey and avocado sandwich . Husband had sirloin steak with mashed potatoes and gravy, steamed vegetables with salad and cornbread with whipped butter. We had iced tea and strawberry lemonade. They didn't just refill our glasses, they brought a little carafe to each of us!! Nice touch! It was a little busy, our waiter took his time taking our order. I wanted to love this place. I ate here as a kid and was excited to bring my family -- two adults and my 1-year-old toddler -- for a visit down memory lane. Unfortunately, we never made it to the table. The wait system is just a clipboard -- no host, no organization. We were fine with that and signed in. The problem was that there's nowhere to wait inside, so we were stuck on a bench outside in the sun with no shade on a hot day, including my infant. After about 25 minutes I stepped to the car for 2 minutes to grab supplies. The Two adults stayed with toddler that our name wasn't called but they got few other people. When I returned to go check, our name had been crossed off -- and so had several others -- while latecomers were already being served. I brought this up to staff and was met with confusion, I felt like she was going to correct the situation but then she argued with another server and then came back then told me I'd have wait another 10-15 minutes. No acknowledgment of the oversight, no apology, no urgency. When we finally decided to leave, the response from staff was indifferent -- and the manager nearby didn't step in. The owner was present and visible throughout. That, more than anything, tells you where customer experience ranks here. I hope they address their front-of-house process, because if the food lives up to the reputation, it's being let down badly by the experience getting to it. read more

I like their food and most of the servers are good but there's one waitress who is always in a bad mood. I try to be cool about her attitude, maybe it's just her face, but it isn't. Other times she's moodier. She looks mad when she takes your order, when she serves your food and never says anything extra other than to take your order. If you get her you'll know who she is. When we get her as a waitress it makes me not want to leave Pieloon. I don't want to ask for another waitress because I want to give her a chance each time but it's worded We bring our own coffee so maybe that's why she gets mad . I do have to say Pieloons coffee is not good, but the food is good. So overall Pieloon is a good spot to go to and one other waitress is really nice and does an amazing job and the hostess, a man and a woman are nice too. read more
