My husband are never in this area and went here randomly. We were not expecting to have such a great experience! Came on a Saturday night and had no wait for a cute booth. We ordered the turkey dinner and steak specials. Great value for a large portion of food. The staff was so nice and attentive. The food came out really fast and we were impressed with how well everything tasted. Classic comfort food was what we wanted and it delivered. We were so full from the dinner that we had to grab some pie to go. I will definitely come here again when I'm back in this area. I've been coming here since I was a kid, and every visit brings back memories of the good ol' days. The food is classic and comforting. The kind that reminds you of family dinners and simpler times. I really love this place and used to make it here weekly when I worked in the area. Ate here today for the first time since the Scamdemic, and it was a mixed bag. When I walked in, it wasn't really the friendly greeting that you like to get at a restaurant. I sat there about 15 minutes with no one coming to the table to take my order. The employees don't seem happy or enthusiastic about their jobs. It's sort of an unfriendly vibe in there. I enjoyed my food very much still, and thought it was a fair value for the price. These folks need to rekindle some passion for running a restaurant and serving the public. I am really on the fence on this one. Pass by this place every time I take the sidestreets home when there's traffic...and I decided to take my Uncle for breakfast since he lives nearby. Neither of us had ever been here so we were both curious. When we came, it was about 20 mins after they had just opened, but the place looked dark inside like not all the lights were on. A lady with an artificial hair color seated us. For a cozy place, I didn't feel the love or coziness from the staff. So serious. Would of liked a smile or little chit chat. We ordered breakfast and it came pretty quick. Food was good. Typical breakfast fare. We then asked for the bill and we're on our way. Not sure if we will make another visit. I have had my eye on this spot for a while. Finally, made time to go. As soon as I walked in I noticed they were very busy ( during lunch hour) . Nobody is there to greet you. After sitting down while waiting for someone to acknowledge us, I was then asked to sign in on a notepad they had towards the side. Not too long after we got a table. Everything was okay until then. After waiting for a server, about 15min later someone finally came stopped by to take our order. She disappeared again, and she was not one to stop by and see if we needed anything. She didn't come by until I was already over it and ready to leave. Not eating our food because we were just so uncomfortable, needing also to order a drink and my daughter for the first time ever didn't like her spaghetti ( her fav food). I just asked for a box to go. Expecting it to be something quick. I later saw her in the otherside taking another order. I decided to just get up and go ask for the box and check myself directly from the front, as it would be much faster. Needing to be elsewhere and the server here just taking way too long to serve , I really didn't have the patience for this place. I understand the fact that it was originally busy, later it had slowed down. But if a restaurant knows they get busy like that, they should def consider hiring more staff to ensure everyone gets served properly. Unfortunately my experience was not at all what I expected. The place itself is also very loud. Aside of the fact of having a crying baby next to us for most of the part. The noise however, is out of their hand. Came at 8:45pm on a Sunday night. Staff was a super friendly and inviting. Very much a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Cute decoration. We ordered the turkey dinner, beef melt and a blueberry cheesecake pie for dessert. The turkey meal came with a choice of soup or salad and garlic cheese bread or corn bread. I got the beef vegetable soup and corn bread. Everything was delicious! Large portions with really good prices. Definitely a lot to take home and enjoy later :-) This was our first time here. Place had a light clientele throughout our hour there. Had awful service by the man that sat us at our table we were there Friday around 11:45am. Ordered a cold coffee was clear and taste was all water when we mentioned the problem he stated that is how coffee is made and not served strong asked to have replaced with a hot cup of coffee, which was cold, had a string flavor. Asked for creamer he reached over to the table behind him gave us a plate with used and unused creamer cups. The restroom was gross, soap dispenser did not have soap (luckily we carry hand sanitizer) saw a waitress go in came out and went about her job. It's been about 15 years since I came to this restaurant and decided that I would like to come back all the way from Long Beach. The restaurant is very clean and well kept the waiters and staff are continuously cleaning they're not just sitting around waiting for something to do besides wait on guests. The menu is huge and the variety selection is even more enormous, the prices are very very fair and affordable. I enjoyed a roast turkey dinner that was not just a turkey roll it was the real turkey deal, so I was glad to have turkey in July with mashed potatoes it came with soup I chose the vegetable beef which was generous and flavorful and the corn bread that was served with it with very good and generous in portion as well as the rest of the meal. My husband had the red snapper, he said it was very well prepared it came with rice and a side of vegetables along with a choice of soup or salad, he also chose the garlic bread garlic cheese bread. Our g-baby had a half a tuna sandwich which was enormous with a huge portion of tuna salad, along with the clam chowder soup which was very rich and creamy. We were all very happy and enjoying our meals. I couldn't finish all of my meal. We shared a slice of lemon meringue, the waitress was so generous she gave us an extra large slice for the three of us to share. Only thing I can suggest that they change is on the red snapper they put a lot of chopped almonds on top, he didn't think it was necessary to have it but ate it anyway this should be put on the menu as will have not allergies and with more than likely be very unhappy with this and have to send it back. Second suggestion would be the lemon meringue pie to be a little more tangy with the lemon flavor more of a lemony flavor. Although it was very good and well prepared it just lacked the zing. Dropped my car off at the Firestone next door and decided to grab breakfast while waiting for my car to get tuned. First things first, you can tell this place is a solid amongst the locals and many people who come here are those who have been coming for years. The atmosphere felt homey and everyone is very cordial and grateful you are there. The waitress assisting me was super sweet and helpful. The service is a solid 5 for me. The food was a solid 3. I got the country fried steak with eggs and cottage fries. It all didn't stand out too much to me. Felt like standard diner breakfast food. The cottage fries were the highlight for me. It reminded me of the Shakeys Mojos; which are my favorite types of spuds. Overall, it's a solid place. Not one I would go regularly to, but one I would visit every once in awhile. read more

We came this afternoon for an early lunch today as a group of five. We felt we waited for 30 minutes to get a table. The waitresses and waiter saw us waiting for a long time but didn't pay attention to us. The only good thing to say about this restaurant is the food. The garlic bread that I ordered with my meal could've been toasted more because the middle was soggy but the rest of our meals we're good and their chocolate cream pie that I ordered. When I asked for another glass of water, they took to long to give it to us. The customer service here is not very attentive. They also never apologized for the wait. read more

6 or 8 months ago, I stopped with my family for dinner after a long day of grieving a lost. Since my wife loved their corn bread, we drove from Orange County past many restaurants just to get here. A place we been coming for years, including before the fire, after the fire, during the pandemic, and mostly seating outside. However, on this particular date, it cost me over 12 dollars just to sip on 2 cokes and 1 limonade. The waitress was quickly upset when I reacted with disappointed when she informed me, they ran out of corn bread. This was the second time dealing with her unprofessional demeanor, and her complaint that the whole day had been busy. At this point, we felt we were no longer welcome, in a restaurant that we have been coming for years. For this reason, and although in fairness I think the owner and most of the staff are great, we have not been back at this restaurant. Sad to said, but for this quick stop, the bad experience, and the cost, we were sure no longer provided with their good service. On our way out, the young fellow that took my money, did not want to provide me with the name of the manager/owner, who again, we have met several times and is a great person. For this reason, I only give it 3 stars and hope the owner takes a look at his staff from time to time. This restaurant has been a local place for many of us. You all know that romanticized story (or maybe you have lived it) of how one discovers a jewel of a place---- by chance that almost seems to be delivered by the very force that seems to have birth good deeds? Will call this force- The First Kindness: the parent of all acts of generosity, the mentor of those who holds good hearts, and the fountain of all moments that replenish the spirit of all those who feel forgotten. Well I had a moment like this, guided by the First Kindness. I was led to Pieloon by by chance. A friend and I had just had bad service at a nearby place. We were handling some business. I was fed up, annoyed, angry, etc. The Pieloon was the first place that was close to us. We went there. I will elaborate on the best treat the Pieloon offered and it is a Blueberry Cheesecake. Did you the twist coming? Natalie was our server, our hostess, and our deliverer of Cheesecake. I was going to a game night later and I was responsible for taking a dessert. I did not want to order a Strawberry Cheesecake, although it s a classic dessert, it is also well-known. So I wanted to bring its fresh cousin to the soiree-- so people would be comforted by the familiar but thrilled with the small yet significant twist. The dessert was described as a Blueberry Cheesecake on the menu. Natalie informed us that the Cheesecake that was baked after I ordered (which is an important thing because it elevates the taste) had jam not whole or sliced blue berries. I still accepted it, cause I wanted to take the treat to my usual game night. I did inform Natalie that the menu describes the dessert as a Blueberry Cheesecake and I imagined sliced and whole blue berries. Most people would too. She offered to give me another cheesecake, after validating what I explained. which makes her a star server. More on this later. A fellow gamer tried the cheesecake first. She told me that the cheesecake was good. I thought, thank you, you are just being kind. But then I tried. And wow! I was pleasantly surprised--- like more than a little, really, close to a lot. And really what I think is the most important thing, cause I care the most, that the cheesecake was a sensation, cause I care about others enough to help them taste what I consider awesome in taste. I will say that the cheesecake did not have jam, more like blueberry compote or preserves. There was like this sweet deepness that remained consistently favorable and never became overly sweet. The freshness of the cheesecake (it was baked as I ordered it) was evident. I typically leave what I brought at the host house. But on this day I took the remains back. Shared a slice with my mom, and it a sliver the next day. There were only crumbs left of the cheesecake. That is proof of its excellent quality. Go get it! Like now. Thank me later. The place had solid and tasty diner food. Natalie, the daughter of the owner, was the host, the server, and the manager. She made sure that I was heard and respected. She provided good service all around. The other staff was a bit confusing. Some people came and brought us water but could not take an order. Some people could take orders but not bring us stuff. It was my first time having a meal at Pieloon. I met a friend here for lunch and was excited with the wonderful menu options. I ordered the vegetable sandwich and I received a BLT. I sent it back for them to correct their mistake. I received a new sandwich but it had bacon on it - crumbles of bacon - which leads me to believe rather than making a brand new sandwich they reworked the original. It's a good thing I'm not allergic to bacon or it would have been a problem. My 1st impression was not good - and based on what they charged for a sandwich - I will not go back anytime soon. read more

Pieloon has been around Downey for almost as long as I've lived here... it's even survived a couple fires if I remember correctly.. it has a diner meets country kitchen sort of ambiance.. the food is decent.. I recommend the waffles, ( they add a little touch of cinnamon) we always ask them to bring the waffle about 10 minutes after the rest of our food so it's not cold, and they always do! :-) we had breakfast there the other day.. their portions are pretty regular size, not huge.. definitely not big enough to split. *Racist encounter* On Sunday, 10/23/2023 my friends and I who are all Korean came to dine at pieloon around 1 PM. After we sat down an older lady (looked Caucasian) in a blue shirt came up to us and started to strike up a conversation. Initially, we thought she was being friendly by asking us where we are from and what we do for a living. We wanted to be cordial so we just went along and told her about how some of us were born and raised in Downey, 2 of us were military veterans, etc. but things started to take a sharp turn when she started talking about how she doesn't appreciate us being here because of our ethnicity and then just walked away. At that point we were all just stunned and didn't have time to respond as she quickly just left the restaurant after saying what she really wanted to say. After she left, we just talked about the negative encounter and finished eating at the restaurant. It's not the worst racial encounter we had and I almost didn't want to post this but i just wanted to write this so others are aware that people like this are lurking about in my hometown of Downey. One of the worker heard bits and pieces of our conversation and asked if we were okay. We told him it was fine and moved on. I am giving this a high review because we love pieloon as we have been coming here since we were in elementary (now in our 30s), but just wanted to spread the word that lowlifes like this are still around and specifically to be wary of this woman. read more
