Wow! So good! Something interesting about Hawaii is they don't care for too much about the aesthetic and interior design. Upon walking in, you see a mom and pops with a weird table layout of their baked goods. But actually eating it is such a different story! Great value for lots of yummy breakfast
Lots of open parking fronting the building. We went around 10am and there was only one other customer in there. Most of the dessert stands and the glass case were empty. A condiment, utensil, napkin, and water station is positioned on the side against the wall. The water container's ice had melted away. Little condensation remained outside the jug. My husband asked the woman at the counter is they were making any more new donuts in the back. She said yes, walked to the back, and returned with a tray filled with a variety of donuts. I got s'mores flavor and he got a couple strawberry ones and something else. Unfortunately, I didn't love my donut. The glaze was too sweet for my liking and I'd prefer the graham crackers to be crumbed rather than big chunks. The chunk texture competed with the softness of the donut. The woman said the best time to come is at 5:30 am, when they have the full spread of options.
Got breakfast here during my stay in Hilo and I loved it! My husband and I shared the Breakfast Popover - it had so much flavor, we loved it! It was pretty big if you're not a huge breakfast eater, I would recommend splitting it. We also tried their puffs which were perfectly baked. The restaurant itself had a lot of seating available and restrooms as well. There was also a lot of parking. Would definitely come back!
The popover with Lilikoi butter was very good. The popover was light & airy and the lilikoi butter was sweet and paired well with the popover. The ube scone, which was nearly $5, was wildly dry and honestly tasted like it had been baked 2 or 3 days prior to sale.
The selection of pastries was fantastic-hard to choose, for sure! We were glad to share a breakfast sandwich popover, no way I could have finished one by myself. Friendly service, and plenty of seating inside & outside. Typical breakfast place ambiance!
If you're ever looking for a great place to grab a bite and a sweet treat, you should definitely stop by popover. The workers are always so friendly and helpful when I'm unsure what to get. I got the bbq chicken flatbread and it was HUGE. I could only eat a third of it and was stuffed! We also got a breakfast popover, which was also sooo ono and sooo filling! We went closer to closing time so the selection for desserts wasn't as full as usual, but we were still able to get a few pastries and cookies to-go.
I was in the area so decided to walk on over for a quick dessert and it was so worth it! The lilikoi and coconut doughnut is the perfect amount of sweet and fruity. Wish I could get this flavor back home! Also, the lady behind the counter was extremely sweet. Love supporting small businesses; they 100% deserve more customers! Note: you order at the counter and there's a lot of indoor seating to enjoy your sweets at!
This locally owned shop serves large popovers filled with delicious fillings. It is not a fancy location or area but this casual eatery is a breath of fresh air. There is plenty of free parking out front. You walk in and give your order at the counter. The lady behind the counter was working hard and very nice. The popover was so big and filled we both commented that this was a large breakfast! The puffs were just ok, not very crispy but that is hard to do in this humidity. The maple bacon donut had generous toppings. The big stars were the huge popovers.
This is a hole in the wall place outside of the main downtown area. The people were very friendly and the breakfast sandwiches were amazing!! High recommend.
Go! Just go and promise you won't be disappointed. This bakery is a hidden gem and the food is only surpassed by its awesome service. I needed a box of little pastry puffs for a client meeting and came back an hour later to get more for myself. The mango and chocolate ones were my favorites - just little snack sized pieces of fluffy heaven. I promise you- you will not be disappointed!!
Popover is a cafe nestled in what looks like a pretty industrial area. I almost mistook it for a car parts store, based on the facade. But Yelp had some great reviews, so off I went. First, the service is lovely, and I'm a huge fan of locally owned businesses! You can tell they care about their shop. I do wish I could give it a higher rating, but for me, the experience was just not what I was hoping for. The coffee was off, and especially since I've had amazing coffee my entire time so far in Hawaii, I was pretty disappointed by this brew. And then my pastry was also nothing to write home about. It tasted like any other brownie I've had, didn't stand out in any way, even with the macadamia nuts. The space itself was set up in an odd way, with two service stations flanking either side of the central seating area. It's also not the cleanest, overall. Sort of bracing its industrial setting, perhaps.
Great place for breakfast or lunch. Coffee and donuts were great! Bought a dozen for the Soldiers....and it gets their seal of approval! Definitely stop by and grab a bite

Love the Popover Breakfast Sandwich because there isn't so much bread. Popovers are light and very airy. I had to try it since I never heard of a popover sandwich. Definitely a great idea since it hold everything inside. It's a great idea. They have specialty donuts as well. I'm so glad to see so many varieties on the menu. I love that the culinary experience in the Big Island is expanding. So many new places with different experiences to be had. I'm glad to see these places still open after everyone experiencing 2020. I love supporting local on the Big Island not just in Oahu. Returning for breakfast next time I return for work. read more
One of my favorite things to do when island hopping is finding niche bakeries, coffee houses, and breweries. Popover was a stop worth making twice! Delicious baked goods (my husband dreams of my trips to Hilo just so I bring him back some Ube scones!) and a light roast local coffee roasted just for them make my tummy happy. I've also tried their creative and delicious popover "sandwiches" and highly recommend any of those to compliment your haupia puff (my personal favorite!) read more

Amazing donuts! Decent coffee. Three sweet ladies were working so hard. Not very fast, but the food was great. We got a scones, donuts, popovers, and puffs. All delicious. It's kind of in the middle of the industrial part, but it was still cute. Not a very organized seating situation, but so charming. read more
I got the ABC Melt and it was delicious. There is a wide array of baked goods along with the popovers that they have different sandwiches with. The popover itself was a little less buttery than I like myself, but the houseware sauce was 10/10. I'm still thinking about it! The ube donut was good as well. I'd definitely recommend just don't compare the popovers to your nostalgic grandmas recipe! read more
Got to go on a quick trip back home to Hilo last month and was excited to try a few new places that popped up (all my Hilo people know we don't get new places that often lol). We got there on a Saturday around 9:30am or so and the display shelves were looking a little bare; they open early at 6am so I'm assuming we just missed out on some of the good ones but that one was on us haha. We needed something to hold us over until our late lunch later that day and saw the menu for the ABC sandwich: a chicken pesto sandwich with melted cheese, avocado, all the works of lettuce, tomato, onion, and sprouts, topped with crispy pieces of bacon, resting nicely on an airy piece of bread. If I knew it was going to be this good, I probably wouldn't have shared lol. We also ordered a cookies and creme donut to eat while they prepared our sandwich. The topping had good flavor, just a little too sweet, and the donut base was just a little too dry but unfortunately we didn't order any coffee with it to wash it down. Overall, great place, would definitely try to go again but at an earlier time to see what other options they have, solid 4.5! read more

Very good pastry and great sandwiches. We got a bunch of lilikoi, mango, and guava puffs. 3.5 stars. It not too sweet. The shell were a little soft, wished it was served warm. Lilikoi and coconut donut: yummy flavors with sweet and tanginess from the lilikoi. The donuts were light and fluffy the way I like it. The popover sandwich are a must try. It's soft and so much better than bread. It is filling and I could only finish 2/3 but it was so good that I made sure to eat the 1/3 later. Great pricing for a delicious sandwich. I got the ABC: avocado, bacon, chicken. Well balanced flavors between veggies and proteins. Also got the Turkey avocado for the little one and she ate 2/3 of it quickly which means that it hit the taste buds right. (She's a picky eater) Service was quick. Ambience casual. It's a must try when looking for a sandwich place. Also great cuz it's open early so stop by to pick up lunch for a long road trip to Kona. read more

Popover is a cute unassuming cafe with very good food and beverages. We ordered the popover breakfast sandwich and the ABC sandwich. Both were really good! They're served open faced in the popovers. We also got a matcha latte and golden latte, both with oat milk. The drinks were tasty and next time I want to try out their Hawaiian pour over coffee. It looked really good! We were being extra greedy and also ordered a few of their donuts. They're so pretty, it was hard to resist! The donuts were pretty good. My favorite by far was the coconut lilikoi. Delicious! The lilikoi butter mochi was also good. If you're in the Hilo area, give Popover a visit. You won't be disappointed! If you order the popover alone, it comes with the lilikoi butter. I didn't get to try it this time but next time I will! read more

This was something I'd never tried before, and am glad I went. Got the ham & Swiss popover, was tasty and had a nice crunch. The coffee scone was nice, I'll enjoy it with butter. The breakfast popovers seem really ono. I hear the plain popovers are good for breakfast with butter and jam, and keep for several days read more

This place has all the stops, food, donuts and coffee. While on vacation this was one of the spots stopped at and I tell you. The breakfast was ono the local coffee drip was bomb and strong, the donuts... The donuts was ono! The service was great and fast. Its right there in the cut with a lot of parking you cant miss it, its a great place to go right off the plane if you're hungry. Go check them out! read more
I've never heard of a Popover until trying this place, and what a unique concept it is! A popover is basically a light pastry that isn't too sweet. Popover is known for their popover sandwiches, which uses popovers as the bread. The middle of the popover is hollow and is cut in half and filled with toppings. I ordered the popovers ahead of time online, which was super convenient. My food was ready on time. We ordered the breakfast and bacon chicken pesto flavors. The breakfast one was my favorite because of the seasoned potatoes! Both of them were delicious though and had the perfect ratio of filling to bread. And the popover was delicious, no wonder why their name is Popover! I was drawn in by the colorful donuts and other pastries, so I had to get a box of donuts... even though I came just to pick up my online order of sandwiches. The flavors were unique like the s'mores and fruity pebbles. While the donuts were colorful and appealing to the eye, they were a little on the dry side. I also tried their lilikoi and strawberry puffs. Those were really good. I liked how light they were and the glaze on top was the perfect touch. There is lots of parking and is very spacious inside. I'm not sure what their hours are because Yelp, Google, and their website all say different things. Overall, this is a great place in Hilo. I will definitely be back to try more of their popovers, and maybe even their flatbread. But for now, I will pass on the donuts. read more
This was a perfect stopover for coffee, breakfast or lunch on our way to Hilo. There is a good selection of pastries. We ordered a couple of the scones, donuts and a ruben sandwich and coffee. The scones were ok, a bit too sweet for me. The ruben sandwich was just awesome, bread was soft and flaky, sour krut aded the perfect balance to bacon. Prices have gone up of course with recent high inflations, but the portions are good too. read more

Friendly service and helpful especially at opening at 5:30am. The lilikoi, guava, chocolate, and haupia puffs to include the cinnamon bun were all onolicious. Definitely Recommend!!! It made today's sunrise that much more special. read more

Great coffee & yummy donuts. I came here to eat something quick so figured get a sandwich instead. Wish I didn't had to wait a bit. I mean there was one other customer in there I guess she had a big order but wished that I asked about the sandwich more and how long the wait was going to be. The sandwich came and it's open faced so you have to sit and eat with a knife and fork. It was good just too big. So next time I will just get coffee and donuts! The haupia puff was ONO and they got cute donuts for the keiki my son loved his Oreo Cookie Monster looking donut. Only thing they should work on is their interior design and menu explanations lol. read more

George is the best! Incredible service and people. They are so friendly and create a welcoming atmosphere where tourists (ie me and my family) feel welcome. The popovers absolutely blew my mind- I've never seen anything like it! Also, you have to try the lilikoi butter. The pastries and coffee were awesome too! read more

Usually love everything this place has. The donuts are great and the puffs are fantastic. The breakfast pizza is amazing and worth the wait. Partner came home with a couple goodies and lattes to start the day but my had ants in it. Drank half before I noticed because of the lid. Not sure how this could have been overlooked, so maybe stick to the baked goods on your visit read more
What better way to start the day other than ube?! Got the sweet fix here . Also got their breakfast pizza! Who knew that existed?! The ube donut was delicious and sweet but not overbearing and the inside was soft and not doughy which was the perfect texture for us. The breakfast pizza was savory with egg, mushrooms, and breakfast meat and it also hit the spot! So many carbs but who cares right?! my other half got the popover which I got to try and we were very happy. Good price point for what you get. They also have a nice coffee selection/menu if you need a "pick me up". read more

My husband and I were debating what to eat for lunch when we happened upon Popover. We're firm believers in eating dessert first, so we stopped by for something sweet and an iced chai latte. Boy, did Popover deliver! Not only did we have the tastiest toasted coconut and lillikoi donuts, but the chai latte was the best we've had in a very long time! Let's talk donuts: on the spectrum from airy to cakey, these donuts land right in the middle. Their consistency is light, but not airy, with plenty of doughy substance without lendimg themselves to a cake-like texture. Literally the perfect mix. And the lillikoi brings a citrusy zest - a delightful zing to the tastebuds that cuts the sweetness in the most perfect way. Yum. We returned a few days later after venturing elsewhere on the Big Island, we couldn't get those lillikoi donuts out of our minds - we just had to go back. When we finally arrived, just before closing, we were sad to see the lillikoi had already sold out! The owner (a saint of a woman for her baking alone, but her sweetness makes her even more so!) coyly slipped into the back kitchen and promptly came back out with 2 freshly made lillikoi donuts, baked just for us. We hadn't even asked for them. Like I said, a saint of a woman. When we visit Hilo again, we will ABSOLUTELY be back. Popover serves nothing but pure delight - for both breakfast and lunch, sweet and savory. If you stop by, you will be in for a treat. read more

Donuts are okay as well as coffee, I didn't find anything particularly special about them though the frostings were pretty delicious. I'm not sure they offer any filled type donuts, but I think that would add to the flavors they already have in store. Otherwise, a good quick stop for donuts and morning coffee read more
Pretty barebone cafe. No indoor seating but a few shaded tables outside. I think they're known for their donuts, we only got a passion fruit coconut one and both taste and texture were great. Wanted to get coffee but the menu looked basic so we decided to skip. read more

Visiting my home island for a bit and had a craving for donuts-- THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO. None of that cake texture, these are legit donuts, my friends. Friendly service, the lady who helped is as sweet as these goodies we picked They also have other baked goods, but visit Popover in the morning because the flavor your eyeing out might run out by 12! read more
The coffees and sandwiches were very fresh. Amazed at how even In eve afternoon the bread was still soft. The doughnuts however aren't so. The texture was tough and dry. The staff was super friendly and the place large and clean. Worth the price point and would try again. read more

We stopped in for a few pastries on the way to a hike. The staff was super helpful - even let us sample the chocolate chip cookie (that we'll have to come back to get!). We went with the lilikoi coconut donut - it was super flavorful, but the half of the donut with the coconut was a little dry. Maybe it needed more icing to over compensate for the topped coconut? We also ordered a few puffs - mango, guava, and apple. The guava was my favorite, but all three were crisp and well flavored. Would stop back again! read more

It was a Thursday morning, she said needed to get all of our pastries first, then would make our coffee, constant flow of people in and out, we were booted out, in waiting for our coffee, said she, would call us when ready, she came opened the door said ready! Would of been just as easy to of delivered them to us, maybe should have another staff person might help...someone do food, someone do coffee. Tables out side were all dirty, there is an in door bathroom you can use, this place was noted on trip advisor as a local favorite. First time here. Everything was just good, not extraordinary. read more
