When a store is the only game in town for goods near a tourist entry point, one would expect/accept high prices. Instead, Keaukaha General Store (within easy walking distance of the Port of Hilo) provided a great selection of sundries, some souvenirs of Hilo, and a small menu of Hawaiian favorite dishes at prices that were the lowest I've seen in Hawaii. My wife and I came here twice: first while walking into town, when we picked up souvenirs and an unexpected loco moco plate. It was a lot less crowded then, with us being the only ones there...allowing us to have a completely different experience. When we came back as we headed back towards the ship, other cruisers from the ship had discovered this place, and were stocking up on various things. It's a large modern space inside, with things organized displayed very neatly. There was no sense I needed to check for expiration dates. There was a portable ATM machine right by the door. A decent selection of alcohol at good prices were displayed (e.g. $8.81 for a bottle of Barefoot Cab or $18.99 for a 12 pack of Budweiser). I took the opportunity to get something I've not seen elsewhere: a bag of dried clams (aka Asari) for $4.19. Ended up finishing it that night...was really good. It has an all day menu, and was able to order a Loco Moco for breakfast. The all beef patty was very thick and dense, definitely from a frozen patty...good for Salisbury steak or Loco Moco, but wouldn't be great for a burger. The brown gravy was served hot and hadn't congealed, and the 1 egg had been cooked over easy, just as requested. It was obviously freshly made. It was packed to-go, with condiments and utensils available near the registers. There wasn't much space to eat inside, but because it wasn't too busy, found a space to sit in the back. I scarfed it down (probably too fast) while my wife finished her shopping. Also in the back, there are gourmet coffee machines and a chest freeze full of hand scoopable ice cream. There is a Pepsi self serve soda machine, along with various sizes of chips. My wife initially bought a couple of t-shirts as requested souvenirs for our travel mates ($25 a piece), and bought another one as we were heading back. On the 1st trip, she also liked a perfume body mist...the tester was the last one so the attendant sold it for half price ($14). For us, she bought a Hilo waterproof sticker for $2.75. And her favorite part of the store was the small portable Pokémon card machine, that dispensed random Japanese Pokémon cards for a quarter. She kept changing out dollars for quarters and ended up getting $5.75 of them...and a couple of them were hollos that we like. They do charge a 3.25% credit card fee, so cash is preferred when possible. read more

Stopped in to grab some musubi for breakfast right after we landed. This is such a cute store with a great selection of snacks and drinks. My kids loved the merchandise, especially the hats. The workers were also so pleasant for it being so early in the morning. We will return! read more

Great locally owned General Store for local favorites- Best Spam Musubi if you can get one, as you have to be lucky as they tend to sell out. Our go to if we are planning to walk and need a snack before Liliuokalani gardens or Ice Pond. Healthy snacks - fresh spicy tofu salad was great. Best place to stop before you head the the cold water pond beaches. They have everything you need. I was gonna get coffee but the shakes looked OnO. I had a Molokai with an added oats and honey. Mahalo to the young man today that suggested it. The drink was lined with honey on the walls. It wasn't too sweet but just right. I recommend it. They even had my friends Hilo beef jerky, "Orchid Beef Jerky". So many other goodies and snacks to check out. A must stop if you're in the area. read more

I love to explore old mom and pop stores when I visit the outer islands and I found Keaukaha General Store while visiting my son who lives nearby. I purchased a bag of frozen pasteles, that are bigger than any I've had before and were also delicious. A bag of 5 pasteles were $25. They also sell frozen luaulaus which I plan to purchase next visit. I also bought a pound of delicious dry aku for $20, cheap compared to Oahu prices. Finding items like these keeps me exploring small stores. read more

I'm giving them 2 stars because they are always friendly but lately they have been fucking up the breakfast game, and not in a good way. Last week they gave me half brown half black bacon still stuck together and yellow orangish eggs that were obviously old. Today 6/30/21 I ordered 3 eggs, less rice (I said 1 scoop, I even explained I don't eat that much rice) , bacon and 6 Lil smokeys. Tell me why I ended up with twice as much rice as normal(literal mountain of rice, 8 Vienna sausages and extra well done bacon. For one, I absolutely hate Vienna sausages. It is not a 1 for 1 equivalent to Lil smokeys. If you don't have Lil smokeys don't make a substitution with out asking. I don't know what to say other than if this happens 1 more time breakfast is 86'd from here. I'm tired of spending money at a place that just doesn't care. read more

Just a quiet little grocery store just outside of Hilo Hawaii. We stopped in to get a drink and turn around because we had missed our turn. Kind of a whole in the wall kind of place in a good way. They had a little bit of everything from they typical convenient store items to fishing supplies. They also have a menu for cooked items, and as much as I wanted to try the cheeseburger, I just didn't have the time to spare. As we were checking out they were having a little issue with the credit card machine so one of the guys from the back took me to another cash register and check us out. Honestly stopped by on a whim, but this place has the best spam musubi in Hilo. Nothing like a basic white rice and spam musubi--the girl told me that they make it throughout the morning with their special sauce. Their chai tea latte is also on-point. This store is great! They have a kitchen. I've only had the croissant bacon breakfast sandwich. It's delicious! Good quality ingredients thick bacon nice eggs. Mmmmm. Oh yah reasonable price! Nothing but good things to say about this place! My husband and I came here to have breakfast and wait for Young Brothers to open. The store opens at 6:30am, which is great for those on the way to work. They have a coffee bar on one side and breakfast on the other. We tried the loco moco and the breakfast sandwich. Both were delicious! The loco moco comes piping hot with a thick brown gravy, love it! The sandwich comes oozing with cheese on a pretty big English muffin, all for $3.50! Good wine/beer/liquor selection if you're looking for somewhere to stop quickly. I've also had breakfast platters from them before and they were great for a quick and inexpensive breakfast. In the back they have great milkshakes, coffee, and smoothies. The best part, however, is the staff there. I know when I go into the store to grab something quickly I'm going to have a good time. I know this is going to sound like I work for them. But I do not. I was actually their competitor in a sense. But I have to say this place rules. Good things come in simple packages. Locally owned general store in front of Hilo Port where the cruise ships dock. If you are on a tour, they won't bring you here. It's for the locals but do not let that steer you off. This store has it all -- provisions, spam musubi etc. and the rear of the store is a cafe serving ILLY espresso. This place is great, right on the way to the beach! The sandwiches are delicious, they have daily special homemade lunch plates that have a local flair that are really good, smoked meat, shoyu chicken and many more!
