Poor Hendrix has just become one of my favorite bars in Atlanta. The drinks are good & strong. The appetizers are delicious and reasonably priced. I fell in love with all the food that graced my tongue. What I loved most, besides the food, is that the bartenders are real bartenders. My guy was able to pair my drinks with my appetizers. I asked him to fix me a drink that paired well with the watermelon salad (which was OMG Good, btw) and he made the best Hendricks Martini I ever had. The other appetizers I tried include the Cold Noodles, Baked Okra (no listed on the menu) and the Rice Krispy treat. At this time the dinning tables are seated outside on the back patio. When we got there, the place was packed, but we were able to grab an outside table pretty quickly. We then waited about 30m before anyone served us. When they got to us, we were given a couple shots of whiskey on the house for our wait, and they said our beers we ordered with dinner were also on them. Much appreciated and they were fairly speedy getting food out to us. Food was great, the fish and chips was delicious. We also ordered a couple beers after food, and they comped those as well, leaving us very happy with their thoughtfulness and generosity in spite of the wait. I enjoyed my time here! I got a red wine sangria, buffalo wings and fries. The sangria was good, not too sweet and just strong enough. The fries were the star of the meal actually. Hot, Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and seasoned to perfection. The wings were decent, but a little small for my liking. This was an awesome dining experience! To me, this place would be considered fancy and a place I wouldn't normally go to in Southern California, but the fact that the portions and the prices are so reasonable really surprised me! Literally, our go-to restaurant. The place is always full of regulars for damn good reason. Food is Michelin nod quality but the place never feels stuffy or pretentious. I could drink the paprika sauce that comes with the lamb skewers by the gallon. Check out their other restaurant in Avondale for another great spot. read more

Poor Hendrix might be too accurate of a name... this was my second or third time visiting. And unfortunately, each time has been worse than the last. The bartender kept calling me "milady" and my miss... odd and inappropriate but fine. My real issue with my experience was all the grilled, toasted or charred food all smelled and tasted like propane or gas. So the skewers weren't pleasant and the grilled/toasted focaccia were a misery to consume let alone be in front of my face. We were going to order more and decided to leave instead of more gasoline food. The cocktail was good. The ambiance was fine. read more

My new favorite hangout! The food is really good and the place has a wonderful, friendly, chill vibe. Come as you are and have some crispy Brussels sprouts, a cocktail or whatever, and guilty pleasure, I love their chicken nuggets. They closed between Christmas and NY because of the Omicron surge, but they will be back! Before the holidays, they were fairly busy but it felt safe. I ordered the fried Brussels sprouts with pepperoni vinaigrette ($4) as a starter and grilled shrimp and grits with garlic butter & pickled mushrooms ($15) as my main. Another friend got the exact set of items, and we both agreed that they were excellent. The Brussels sprouts featured a strong balsamic taste, mmm. The shrimp and grits was a huge portion and was buttery and generous with the shrimp; I believe I was given six large ones. Mushrooms were slightly scant but not a huge deal. Dessert was all right. I got the milk chocolate mousse with peanuts & bourbon caramel ($5). The heavily boozy caramel was poured atop the pinkish-colored mousse. It was okay but not exactly what I'd expected. I guess I wanted more of a stronger chocolate, less caramel. I already recommended Poor Hendrix to some friends and hope to return soon! read more

We enjoy the atmosphere and service of this place. It's one of the closest restaurants to us, and honestly we'd be regulars and come weekly IF ONLY the menu was just a little bit bigger. We're both dairy free, and there never seems to be enough options for us. We are happy to see they have started marking DF on items that are dairy free! If we're just going for a bowl of fries and drinks, this place is great. Would just really love to have a salad or meat dinner option consistently. Prices are better than most of the other places in the area too. So that's another plus. read more

My dog and I dined on the heated porch, which was wonderful that they're dog-friendly. The wait staff was very attentive to both me and Big Baby. They brought her a water-bowl and gave her a treat. I had the rainbow trout with lentils, and it was the best piece of fish I've ever eaten (and that includes trout fresh out of a Maine lake on the Appalachian Trail!). I paired it with a Left Handed "Death Before Disco" Porter that was smooth and chocolaty. Can't wait to go back and try some of their other offerings. Highly recommended. read more

Great little neighborhood bar and restaurant. There's street parking as well as limited parking in the back. The hostess and the manager were so wonderful in accommodating a large party of 12. This place isn't really great for big parties bc it's small but I'll tell you they were fantastic for getting us in. As many of us as there were our server did a great job keeping up with our demands. She was so nice and friendly. And I know our party was large and crazy. So kudos to her for putting up with us. To be honest, when I first saw the menu - I wasn't all that excited and wondering what all the hype was about. Our friend gave us a gift card and SO HAPPY she did. This place is definitely worth all the praise given the taste profile of the food, the creativity, and overall fun factor. We sat outside - it's smallish, but used the space well with xeroscape decor which was modern and functional. It's very casual here and lots of hipsters which can be fun. There are so many great choices for small plates - we devoured them. Some favs: Sweet Potato biscuits (we had to get 2 orders), Chili rubbed steak (perfectly cooked medium rare even though they were thinly sliced), salmon tartare with chips, and chicken liver pate. We came in for dinner but ended up staying at the bar. The bar menu is different from the restaurant menu, as it offers only small plates. We tried a variety of dishes. The must trys are the brussel sprouts, wings, mushroom skewers, and grilled cheese sandwich. I was not a fan of the shrimp skewer. I'm sorry but it wasn't worth $8 for two shrimps! Our bartender Que was very good, and he seemed to be the hardest working bartender that night. Mondays and Tuesdays are the days to go for specials. One word of advice, don't look the place up on Google maps street view because it looks nothing like it does in the images. The restaurant is very nice. Has a rustic feel to it from the lights to the decorations. The bar is nice and very inviting, but we opted for seats in the dining room. The tables in the dining room are a little close together, but not so squeezed in you don't feel like you don't have privacy. The menu is short and simple. Cocktails are pretty good. I went with an Old Fashioned. Honestly, wasn't the best Old Fashioned I've ever had, but it wasn't the worst. Here's a little breakdown of my meal: Smoked Trout Butter, Local Radishes, Grilled Baguette: I was expecting the Smoked trout butter to have more of a buttery flavor, but it had a surprisingly strong smoked trout flavor but has that great smooth texture that just melts in your mouth. Radish is very fresh and goes well with the salt. The only downside of this dish is that the toast is a little burnt that takes away from the great flavor of the Trout Butter. Grilled Hanger Steak, French Fries, and Arugula Purée: Arugula purée has a two part flavor burst. The initial bite starts with a citrus flavor which transforms into a buttery arugula that just melts and spreads throughout your mouth leaving you wanting for more. The hanger steak is cooked perfectly to medium rare. The purée goes well with the hanger steak and the added salt. French fries have a nice crunch to them. Chocolate Coffee Mousse, Bourbon Caramel, and Puffed Rice The bourbon caramel oh my goodness, the bourbon caramel! It has a great bourbon flavor that just goes perfectly with the chocolate mousse. The puffed rice adds a nice crunchy texture to create an excellently balanced dessert Overall, I was very happy with the experience. The waitress was very attentive and knowledgeable about the dishes. I would recommend this place and will probably be returning to try a few other dishes and probably get some more of that BOURBON CARAMEL!!! read more

I decided to stop for a snack and what better place than a small plate "bar or restaurant" like Poor Hendrix. I took a seat at the bar, but there is both inside and outside table seating. I ordered the sweet potato biscuits that did not come as expected. I was expecting sliced biscuits with ham in between like little sandwiches but that was not the case; see photo. They were delicious little bites, and I loved the ham. I also ordered the whoopie pies. I loved that they toasted the cream because toasted things smelled delicious. The whoopie pies were too sweet for me though, so I would not order them again, but if you have a sweet tooth, these are for you. I wish they'd had a green side item for the bar menu other than edamame. I was looking for something generic - small fresh salad or sauteed greens. I had two drinks - the Hemingway Daquiri and the Corpse Reviver #2. The Hemingway Daquiri was smooth with a slight burn going down that I surprisingly liked. The Corpse Reviver was herby and a bit tart. You can order off-menu cocktails as well and the bartender may have some suggestions for you - just ask. Service is chill and the bartenders are patient with answering questions and with patrons deciding on their order. The music was fabulous - a mix of blues and classic rock. Very chill and very relaxing. There were several other things on both the bar and seated menu that I would like to try; I can see myself becoming a regular here. read more

Our server, Kevin is taking the matter into his own hands, which I prefer because I'm here for the roasted cauliflower, gar-par wings, and the fried mushroom sandwich. The two have a back and forth for a second, and Reef convinced the shots into existence. "So, the CIA recently released documents about how the universe isn't real. Like we live in a hologram." I've always thought of myself as a good dinner conversationist. "I don't have the correct mindset for your philosophical bullshit right now, Richard." "I didn't even get to the good part!"[1] Kevin shows up with our shots, and the two ladies by the door seemed to have gotten theirs as well. "Congratulations!" We take the shots and order our first round of food. "Do you want to get the beet salad too?" "Why not. It's not like they really exist."[2] "Please stop."[3] "Fine I guess." Kevin unfazed by my comments still standing at our table. " can I get a High Life, and some water." "Yeah, no problem." "I'm just saying, technically the 3D realm of existence is a hologram. Nothing around you is real." Reef just stares me down, I take it as a sign to stop pushing this into existence. Our first three dishes show up, and we start to dig into them. "The girls over there are cute, right?" "Yeah, but I'd say you need to reign it back into the box, dude." "DON'T TRY TO KEEP ME IN A BOX!" "I AM THE BOX." One of the girls from the other table exclaimed. "Oh..." Reef gets a little too excited about that statement. "Hey y'all, do you want anything else from the kitchen?" I order the fried mushroom sandwich and Reef gets the mussels. We order another round of shots, my roommate gets another pour of green chartreuse, I just get a shot of well whiskey. "I believed you forgot my High Life too." "Congratulations!" "Do you wanna get dessert?" "Sure why not." We finish up our dinner with the take-home desserts pay and head back to the house. On the short drive, I try to talk about how the world isn't real and the US government proved it back in '83. He decided to blare "Jump to It" by Aretha Franklin, and I decided it's better to take the blue pill on this conversation. DISCLAIMER: I've only been here for the bar menu and drinks. But honestly, that's all you need. The bar menu overlaps with the dinner menu but without the wait for table service and fancier entrees. It's a great way to taste different dishes at a small price. Dishes ranged from $3-9, with a majority of the dishes falling between $4-7. FOOD The small plates and bar eats are so tasty! After coming here twice, I still haven't had the chance to try every single thing I wanted: Marinated Mussels Crostini w/pickled vegetable spread & radish ($4) - on a small crostini were set approx. 4 mussels, which I didn't even think possible. Each order has 2 crostini, perfect for sharing. Not as pretty as the ones I saw online, but the crostini were crispy and the flavors worked together well. Moroccan Lamb Skewers w/paprika vinaigrette ($6) - plating was a bit disappointing. The lamb tasted pretty good but not as special as other reviews were raving about. Borderline dry, but the sauce helped save that. Dry Rubbed Shrimp Skewers w/Alabama white sauce ($4) - comes with 2 skewers. Looked and tasted pretty disappointing. However, the shrimp was plump and fresh and I can't complain because of the cost. Fried Okra & Shishito Peppers w/fish sauce, cilantro and lime ($4) - OK THIS IS MUST ORDER. I could have eaten multiple orders of this. The tanginess and strong flavors of the fish sauce and lime with the cilantro with the crispy fried okra and peppers were insane. This dish alone earns Poor Hendrix 5 stars. Cold Noodles w/a spicy sesame-peanut dressing, fresh veggies and chili oil ($5)- a nice take on a traditional Taiwanese/Chinese dish. Another of my favorite bar eats of the night. Very satisfying, and as spicy as you want it to be (the chili oil was provided on the side). Grilled Cheese Sandwich w/tomato jam ($6) - takes a little longer than other dishes but worth the wait! The sandwich is cheesy and slightly sweet thanks to the tomato jam. Another dish worth ordering! Of course we had to try the chocolate mousse with peanut butter - Simple but tasty. Whatever mousse they have on the menu, definitely worth the order! COCKTAILS I'm a big gin drinker, so I especially liked the Moonstruck, which doesn't seem to be on the menu anymore. It was fruity and boozy and tasty. I was nervous about the Your Body is Not a Temple - basil infused rye, Montenegro Amaro, Bruto Americano, Lemon and Simple. However, when it arrived in a small cordial glass, I found myself enjoying the small sips. I had to drink my tribute to Anthony Bourdain (look up his quote from one of his books) and I was glad I did. Drinks are a little pricier than other cocktail bars in Decatur but super tasty. Overall, I'm a huge fan of Poor Hendrix. The food was delicious and the cocktails were fantastic. TLDR; This place is amazing, the prices are reasonable, and you should go. FOOD: It's tapas, so expect to order a lot to get filled up (on the plus side, you can try a lot of different things!). I came with my boyfriend and my dad for a Friday evening dinner and we shared several things. My favorites were: Chicken liver pâté toasts, coffee crusted quail, sweet potato biscuits, and the grilled cheese. The chicken liver pâté was so good!! Really smooth pâté, crunchy toast, peanuts added some crunch, and the red wine gastrique added a sweetness to balance it. The grilled cheese is very cheesy, has gooey melted cheddar with the chewy toast, and has an interesting sweetness of with tomato jam. Beef bulgogi skewers was very tasty and tender. We also had the olives, garlicy white bean dip (basically hummus), and spicy cold ramen (it was kind of meh to me). On the whole though, I was very impressed with the food here. DESSERT: We shared the brown butter rice krispy treat, dark chocolate mousse with coffee ice cream, and the crème brûlée of the day. My favorite was the dark chocolate mousse, which was very rich and delicious, and the crème brûlée of the day (five spice). Yum! The brown butter was subtle in the rice krispy treat, honestly it just tasted like a rice krispy treat to me. DRINKS: I'm super biased because I only drink sour beer, but I was SUPER impressed by what they had available. Bae got a Tritonia (!) which they had on tap, and they also had my favorite beer available in a can (Westbook Gose)!! They had other things too -- my dad got an IPA. SERVICE: Good! Waiter was attentive, nice, and very willing to answer my questions. AMBIANCE: Very casual, but pleasant. We sat outside, they have a nice patio with string lights. [Time & Date of visit]: Multiple Sundays for dinner [Party Size]: 4 [Location/Ambiance]: Nested in the quiet intersection of Hosea Williams and 2nd ave, I would have to say the area and the mood of the restaurant, including the bar side is chill. There's usually plenty of parking in the back and in the front if you're lucky. Most Atlanta people don't know how to parallel park, so if you have mastered it, you're in luck. The back patio looks like a great spot to share some drinks and chill in the summer nights. [Service]: Each visit, service has been down to earth friendly. It's really genuine and far from any act to try to get more tip from the bill. I think the staff actually do like doing what they do. I wish that more places in Atlanta had that. Especially places in Buckhead. [Food Highlights]: Just about everything on the small plates menu is under $10. If you have a party of four, definitely splurge a bit and order everything. Because of the menu being seasonal, you might not get to try it again. Marinated mussels crostini - Not only is this one of the photogenic dishes but one of my favorites. The sauce brings everything together for the savory crostini bread, the mussels and the included veggies. There's a variety of textures from the crunchy edges of the toasts. The soft, chewy inner parts of the bread. Tender but firm mussels. To the crisp radishes. Moroccan lamb skewers - Wow, if only if they had pitas to make this wrap. For anyone who shy's away from lamb from past experiences of gamey flavors, this is one recommendation I would vouch for on trying. The paprika vinaigrette has just the right amount of acidity to balance the savory, juicy lamb. Old Bay fried cauliflower - I will have to admit, I might not share just because I can double dip. The light crunchy fried cauliflower is dusted with Old Bay seasonings for a good play of texture and flavor. Another personal favorite. Chicken Liver pate toasts - There's something a little missing that I am not getting. I'm not sure its just not as savory as I was expecting. But the peanuts also throw me off a little due to the mixture of textures. I'm iffy on this one. Warm hummus - let's just say, the green lids of the premade stuff in the grocery store can't compete. Dry-rubbed shrimp skewers - There's a good amount of heat that works it's way up after a few bites. Though I'm not sure how I feel about the Alabama white sauce that accompanies it. It's still good on its own though. Chimichurri roasted chicken leg - Wow, I'm very surprised at how good the refried black beans are. It's not just a garnish for plating. The chicken was juicy all the way through and is a fairly large entree. My tip is, take a bite of the chicken and beans all together. Grilled cheese sandwich - I would have to say hands down, this is ultimate comfort food and wish they had a tomato bisque soup to pair this with. The then spread of a semi-sweet jam and the melted cheese of slightly salty and savory just makes this dish worth the asking price. If you're feeling guilty for indulging, the salad is also tasty. Mix it in with the lamb for a more complementing meal. Salted Brown Butter rice crispy treats - Almost like homemade, if your mom was a pastry chef. Nostalgia and then some with each bite. Without the sugar rush afterwards. Dark chocolate terrine - Almost like.... a chocolate soup. It was pretty good but not my favorite. Walnut cake - Be forwarned, this has a deep nutty taste. Though the poached apples and ice cream bring in tart and sweet together. [Total Bill w/ Tip & Tax]: Even with two people sharing a drink and about most of the small plates, the split was about $24 among four people. It's a really great value for the quality of food you're getting. {Summary}: Great food, great prices, great service. This is one of the few gems in Atlanta that hits all the marks and makes it worth the drive for me to want to keep coming back.
