Great new place in Kirkwood. Delicious drinks and a very nicely curated menu. The night we went we did not have reservations, and we expected a wait, but we were seated relatively fast. They ran out of one of the items on the menu, but worked with us to make it happen with a different combo (instead of pasta they subbed gnocchi). This place has great potential and the neighborhood needs a more upscale place so I'm excited to see where it goes from here! read more

Delicious and fun place to eat with a really unique menu. I got the French dumplings, which was really tasty. My boyfriend got the W African steak kabob and that was good too. Finally we had the creme brûlée which was basil flavored, and it was actually really good. Service was great, music was funky and fun, and food was amazing. read more

My husband and I have been here twice now. We love the low key intimate vibe it has. I agree with a review that the food is slightly salty. It's just starting off so I'm passing it as "evolving". I will continue to go here and hope the food improves as they grow. read more

Saying amazing simply does not give this place justice!!! Beautiful selection of local beers and liqueurs, but the food is beyond exceptional. We ordered lamb skewers, buffalo wings, special of fries with Korean BBQ, and marinated mussels on toast..... wow, what a spectacular flavor explosion! And they call this bar food??? I really wanted to love this place, but it just kept disappointing me through our entire experience. We went here on a Thursday on a fairly cool night, so we sat outside (on the bar side). There are two different menus depending on if you sit on the bar side or the restaurant side, so we had the Small Plates menu. At first our service was great, we were greeted and got drink orders fairly quickly. The drinks were definitely not worth it, they are all served in small glasses and the quality and taste was extremely lacking (and I LOVE other restaurants with expensive drinks in teeny glasses, but they need to be good!) We ordered several small plates: Tomato-Garlic Bread - literally small pieces of bread with garlic and what tasted like Pesto. But it was only $2?? So maybe I shouldn't complain Sweet Potato Biscuits - These were ok, a little dry, nothing to write home about Steak Skewers - These were the best thing we ordered, the flavor was great with a little kick. However, we ordered another round of these later and they were terrible the second time. No flavor and tasted burnt, so can't say they always taste great French Fries w/ House Ranch - This "House Ranch" tasted JUST LIKE tartar sauce... not what i was expecting at all, and was not a fan Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Tomato Jam - This was pretty good, again, not something I'm going to rave about My companion had finished her drink while we were ordering but wanted a minute to decide what to get next. She should have ordered then because we didn't see our server again for about 30 min (enough time to get all of our plates, eat all of them, and then have to flag down another server to get us water because we'd finished that off a while before also and then to finish THAT water). Now during this time we SAW our server several times outside speaking with other tables and completely ignoring us. I literally had to yell "excuse me" to get her to come to our table. She said there was a mixup and she thought someone else had gotten us, which may have been the case, but she was right next to us and could see we didn't have drinks). And I am not one to yell to get someone's attention, I patiently tried to make eye contact with her for the full 20 min before getting to that point. -This was when we ordered the second round of Beef skewers that were disappointing, and another round of drinks. After that we had to flag down our server again to get our checks. Overall the service was poor and the food nor the drinks made up for it. However, the food is really cheap compared to other "small plate" type restaurants, so they do have that going for them. read more

Ate there on Saturday night. It was my first visit. The patio had a nice vibe. We ordered about about 6 plates which included dessert. The quality of the food was okay, but overall I just wasn't really impressed. Also, they added an extra cocktail to our bill which we didn't order and which I almost missed. I don't really write a bunch of reviews, but for whatever reason I felt like reviewing this one because based off this one visit, I believe they're overrated. Also, they weren't really apologetic about the screwup with drink which was not real cool. Cute spot. Great apps and a nice patio. I enjoyed my paloma and the sweet potato biscuits were down right delightful. My sister did not like their dacquiri so stay away from that. 100% my favorite local spot in Atlanta. The service is attentive and friendly, the bartenders are knowledgeable and fast. Every week I don't know what I want to drink and every week they patiently talk with me about what I want and make sure I get the perfect drink. Get there after 9:30p and order the "Late Night Loaded Fries" or "Fun Fries" because that's a way better name. They're different every week and they're always 10/10. The grilled cheese with tomato jam will also change your life for the better. TL;DR Everybody working from the owners to the kitchen staff to the bartenders to the wait staff is kind and quick and knows what they're doing. Eat the food. Drink the drinks. I don't have the words to accurately describe Poor Hendrix. We visited as a group for an early girls night and the food was phenomenal. The brussel sprouts ($4) were perfect, crispy and yet tender and seasoned perfectly. The grilled bread with ricotta and lemon ($6) practically saw the plate licked clean. For an entree I went with the grilled cheese and bisque and was not let down. At $10 it was a steal. The portions were generous and the pair complimented each other wonderfully. And while it was no ordinary grilled cheese, it didn't come across as pretentious or over complicated. I can't wait to go back and try the bar menu. read more

This place is a-ma-zing. I've only eaten at the bar, but have been several times. The bartenders are knowledgeable and friendly, the food is consistent, delicious, and reasonably priced. The crowd is mostly people from the surrounding neighborhood and industry peeps. If you're down for a casual night and want to feel like part of the neighborhood, this is your joint. The bar menu has enough variety for every taste. I recommend the beet salad. The quail eggs are fantastic if you want to try something new. Wings are great, local salad is good, lamb skewers are a delight. Most of the bar stuff is finger food and/or on skewers but if you get 2-3 things you're bound to leave satisfied. Top notch. Hope they stay around for a very long time; honestly I could eat here at least once a week. read more

We had a great dinner tonight at Poor Hendrix. The restaurant is cozy and well laid out, our service was excellent, and so was the food. 4 of us ordered the trout and not one crumb was left on plates. Two ordered the pork with bitter greens and said it was very good. One ordered the vegetarian dumplings; no comment from her but the plate was emptied. Poor Hendrix is in an up-and-coming area at Hosea and 2nd. It is only 10 minutes from my house so I know I will make this place a regular stop. We ordered off the restaurant menu, but there is a bar menu that looked mighty tasty. read more

I love this place! Wanted to go down the street to my fave place (Dish Dive) for my birthday dinner with friends but DD is closed on Monday's so I chose this place due to their intriguing selection of vegetarian dishes. Perfect vibe! We sat at a long table with cozy pillows and appreciated the low key environment. Our server was awesome and the food was amazing! My friend and I shared the curried chic pea entree, Moroccan lamb skewers, and ricotta with herbs, olives, lemon, peanuts (mmm more bread please). Everyone at my table also loved what they ordered so I don't think they have anything that isn't delicious on their menu. To our delight, it was half off bottles of wine so we finished two bottles of Essay white (soooo good). We wanted to try the french dumplings but they are only are available on Sunday's so I'll be back for those and to try everything on their menu. At the end of our meal nobody had to do math on napkins to suss out our large bill because our server thoughtfully created separate checks for each person. So decided to walk to this place from town ( I was at the Kirkwood pub downtown and was NOT impressed) It was well worth the .8 mile walk! Their menu has a greek, asian, Spanish, American flare. All while playing rock/ alternative music. The food was phenomenal. I chose a couple of small plates, lamb skewers and grilled asparagus, SO FLAVORFUL! and saved room for dessert, having pistachio pound cake with strawberry compost... OMG YUM! Food was ok - nothing special but the manager asked my friend and I to leave so she could seat another party while we were finishing our wine - super rude. We'd had the table for about 85 minutes and were finishing our conversation and last glass of wine - really have never been asked to leave to seat another party in my entire life. My husband and I went for dinner last night and WOW! The food is fantastic. They have 2 menus - for the bar and the dining room. There was a 45-minute wait for the dining room (at 7pm on a Tue. in December!) because the dining room is TINY. So, we sat at a table at the back of the bar and ate from the bar menu. We ordered cocktails and 4 small plates and everything we had was fantastic. The cocktails were excellent and the food was outstanding. The grilled cheese with smoked onion jam was my favorite. Great food and prices with a local bar type feel. Smaller plates but prices are cheap so kind of expected. The lamb skewer was really good and moist. The steak skewer was tender but was really spicy. I haven't been for the actual dinner menu, but with the cocktail and small plate selection in the bar area that's all you need. I've had a few of their cocktails and all were amazing, and shared 6-7 small plates and left feeling full! The prices are great for what you get and the food is upscale. I've been wanting to go back for a while now and will say the bar gets crowded fast (not so much when they first opened)! I wondered in to this restaurant/bar hoping for a decent meal and a few good drinks. Upon entering I found the large portrait of a terrier having a pipe in a smoking jacket a bit odd but charming. Foreshadowing? You be the judge. I was greeted promptly, and found the accommodations sparing yet comfortable. An initial glance at the drink card revealed one of my preferred libations, the Cuban Daisy (or Daiquiri if you want to be pedestrian about it). I ordered one post haste. It arrived shortly, and was exactly as it should be, which is to say cold (a warm cocktail is an abomination, unless it's a toddy). This set the tone for a crisp glass of white. I was torn between the Bordeaux blanc and the Verdejo, and choose to enjoy the latter so I could reminisce of youthful indiscretions in España. To accompany my libation I chose a slice of tomato garlic bread with manchego and anchovies. The breads crisp exterior was a Bonny to the interiors soft and juicy Clyde. The tangy manchego and anchovies brought out the citrus and tropical melange of the Verdejo. Bravo maestro! Bravo! I delved deeper into the menu in search of heartier fare. I had a skewer of lamb, which was not a full course but more of an intermezzo. It was spiced like only the old Bedouin traders of yore could achieve with their secret stashes of ras el hanout. The pleasure derived from the lamb was manyfold, my taste buds tingling with delight. I accompanied the former with a cocktail that was apptly named the cloudbuster, which mixed rye whisky with rum and sherry. I was on cloud nine! Nearing satiation, I decided upon a simple last course and ordered Aaron's sweet & spicy nuts and a fine local cider (I believe Treehorn was the moniker). I did not have high expectations for the final, having had my share of satisfaction already. I should have know better than that! Aaron's nuts were divine! A filbert could hope for no better fate than to fall into his formidable hands! The texture was crunchy and smooth, the taste exotic and complex. The cider was a perfect compliment, with a subtle sweet funkyness that was the perfect compliment to Chef Aaron's salty nuts. The alchemy was sublime. read more

Went here for an early dinner Saturday night. The space features a bar side and restaurant side, each with their own menu. While there are similarities between what is offered, you can't order food from the side you are not seated on. We quickly seated on restaurant side. Beer prices here are wonderfully reasonable for some awesome selections of craft brews. We started with the brussel sprouts, steak skewers, lamb skewers, shrimp skewers, mushroom skewers, and a fingerling potatoes dish. The winning apps were the potatoes (they ended up being sweet potatoes with feta and arugula and the combination was incredible. I would have eaten that as an entree), brussel sprouts, and the lamb and mushroom skewers. I didn't find the steak and shrimp skewers worth the price and portion. My friend and I ordered the steak and shrimp and grits entree to split. The shrimp and grits were incredible and the portion was great! Huge serving of buttery garlic grit goodness. I found myself dipping the steak in my bowl of grits. Steak was slightly over cooked but the duck fat cooked potatoes on the side helped me get over it. Next time I eat here I'll try and sit on the bar side to try out a few more small plates. This place is for sure worth a try and an adventure out in East Lake. read more

What a fun little place to go eat and have a drink with some friends. Cool little vibe, tasty food and authentic decor for the building. Food was great having been served the salmon tar tar with a bag of chips (yummy) and their seasoned fries with a ranch dip (delicious). Unfortunately our wait staff was so so in the service department. We were constantly waiting for drink refills which became frustrating and detracted from the atmosphere. If only someone would have swung by every once in a while to ask us if we needed anything there wouldn't have been a issue. We also discovered to our disappointment they did not have a summer cocktail menu. Their drink menu is heavy and awesome for some winter warm up. Not so good for summer sipping on their back patio. But Shawn pulled through in the end to save the day. He and another young lady made up a drink with a unique little twist similar to a mojito. It absolutely hit the spot and should be added to their menu ASAP (extra star earned!). Over all this is a fun little place and as the establishment matures and learns their trade they will hammer out some of these frustrating nuances. Not only that but the restaurant, while super small, it's outstanding so you basically have a badass bar with great food and people and a restaurant you can host a business dinner or bring the gf parents too. its great to get some new establishments in East Lake with quality like this. Poor Hendrix is a neighborhood gem. We ate there last night for the first time in the dining room - the bar is great as well. We started with the confit potatoes, which were very tasty. Our mains included French dumplings and the North Carolina trout. Both were very good but the trout was the standout. It was paired with cheesy grits, mushrooms, and crispy pieces of bacon. Dessert was also incredible - a chocolate Coca Cola cake with an orange and anise ice cream. Combine this with a great atmosphere, friendly service, and very reasonable prices and you have a wonderful restaurant. Can't wait for our next visit! read more
