Pool Burger is my husband and I's favorite haunt for an excellent drink, good burgers, and exceptional service. It has become our go-to neighborhood bar. They are chill about lettuce wrapping the burgers (some places give us a big hassle about it) and the quality is consistent and tasty. The staff is incredibly personable, kind, and mix a hell of a drink. We have grown especially fond of John, Adam, and Nick for their exceptional customer service and ability to set a relaxing vacation vibe, any time of year. Pool burger has been on my list of restaurants to try for a while, and I'm glad that I finally made it out for dinner. It has a cool tiki atmosphere that helps create a nice oasis in the middle of the city. They do a good job of taking what is essentially a food truck, and utilizing the existing lot and building to make into a cool restaurant. You order drinks and food at the counter/bar, then find a table on your own. I had the Loyal Forever Burger (Double Cheeseburger, Pickled Jalapeños, Lettuce, Tomato, Grilled Onions, Ranch) and it was delicious - easily one of my favorite burgers in Austin. I also tried the Pool Chips with Guacamole and Pimento, and the Crinkle Cut Fries, both of which were great as well. The food came out quickly, and it's easy to grab from the Airstream trailer on site. My only complaints are that parking can be a pain, and there's people constantly wondering around looking for open tables (myself included). Nothing that overshadowed the experience, but it would be nice if they had a better way of seating people so there wasn't the constant stress of people trying to get tables (something that isn't fun for the person searching, or the people who are eating). Stood up from my seat without making a single step and manager hauled ass over to yell at me to put my mask on, which I gladly did since I believe in that but geez give me a chance to get it out. Didn't think it was that big a deal but apparently he held a vendetta. Every member of our table from then on was bring eye balled and scrutinized. One of our friends who is a surgeon that risks her life everyday working on covid patients was harassed by the same man because her face mask broke mid step. This is a trailer is it? Wait, I have really only eaten a trailer twice, I don't do trailer food only because I prefer to sit in a brick and mortar establishment. Don't judge me. I'm weird like that. While I am at it, why take your dog to a restaurant? I digress. Anywho...It has a darling little bar area, with equally cutie pie patio and hip bartender/servers. After banter, jumped on the Pool Cheeseburger, Fries and a Frozen Hurricane. We retired inside the living room of the past residence of the structure and chilled, food popped out quickly. Burger was cheesy, messy, cooked well, flavor filled meat patty, crisp iceberg lettuce and tangy onions all worked a treat. I liked the fries, nice crunch and if I had two of those Hurricanes, I wouldn't of been able to enjoy the ubiquitous personal pitcher awaiting for me upstairs at Deep Eddy. Yeah, that cheeseburger is good. It's the classic, quintessential burger you'd always hope for in a burger. All the right juiciness, all the right patty to toppings ratio, and the right flavor. It was so satisfying, my 2 year old son kept stealing bites from me. It was the first time I really wasn't willing to put my kid before myself. Plus, what 2 year old likes onions, tomatoes, and the works? The burger was that delicious, anybody would be crazy to not like. Sure, the prices are steep, especially that you there really isn't table-side service, and - during the busy times - probably not even places to sit; however the tiki-inspired drinks and burgers are innovative and delicious. What it make lack in seating and amenities is made up for in the nice service at the bar and the unusual, pool-house ambiance. I recommend coming in the late-afternoon to early evening before the rush hits around 5ish. Parking is also a tricky one, so maybe consider a bike ride over. read more

Given that Austin doesn't have any real Tiki bars, I relished the chance to enjoy what I was told by friends to be one of the best Mai Tais the city had to offer. I dropped in one Saturday afternoon, and it took me a bit, but I found some parking nearby. I can see how it would be a challenge to find a parking space, especially when the temps are over 100, as was the case this day, but it's worth it. The simplistic bar and seating areas belie how good the food and drinks were. I approached the bar to order my Mai Tai, and saw that they sell their glasses, so I bought one to commemorate my experience. I also ordered a cheeseburger and fries, and sat down to wait for my order. I'll be damned if that wasn't one tasty cheeseburger. It was just perfect with my Mai Tai. I dug the crinkle cut fries, too. The Mai Tai was about as legit as you can get. Bonus points for serving it exactly as you're supposed to - with fresh mint, and a spent lime hull garnish. It was delicious, and boozy! I savored every bite and sip of my meal. I hope to be back at some point. The one and only thing that was kind of a bummer was the abundance of flies in the indoor seating area - maybe they can find a way to address that problem, because swatting them away constantly got really old, really fast. Kept hearing about this place. Saw an article in Bon Appetite food magazine about tiki bars and this one was featured. The magazine also highlighted a drink that sounded very tasty. Several of us finally went last week at lunchtime. The outdoor "ambiance" was cool and comfortable, and it wasn't crowded at all. When I went up to the counter I asked the 2 bartenders about the drink featured in the magazine, as I had forgotten the name. They had no clue. They asked what the ingredients were and I mentioned rum and Aperol and "other stuff". I told them I would recognize the name...Tradewinds? Nope. Mai Tai? Really? They even had a specialty drink menu, and the drink wasn't on it. I settled for a Mai Tai, which was overly slushy and just ok. More Tai than Mai. We all ordered the burgers. Just ok. Overdone and bland, with not much flavor. No one really liked them a lot. For a place owned by the Jeffrey's (awesome burger!) people, this burger was a big disappointment. Plus, the fries appeared to be the crinkly frozen variety...again, bland and below average. Most fast food places have better fries. When I got home I pulled out the magazine article. The drink was the Bird of Paradise. What place has a full page picture in a national food magazine and the bartenders don't even know the drink that was featured??? Nothing beats a cheeseburger after a cold dip in deep eddy pool. This burger slams and so do the Krinkle cut fries. Their drinks are extremely cute, even the zero proof versions are delicious. Service is surprisingly fast even on a busy day. They are cranking it out with quality food at that. Docked a star for parking and seating availability. Outdoor seating on junky tables and patio furniture, and small indoor seating at what looked like a home made table. 2 stars for the drinks and food. The mixed drinks certainly aren't cheap so they should be incredible but they're not. The beer is cold and cheap though, so that's good. The burgers match those that you'd get at any truck stop diner. They don't suck, but they're nothing special either. Since I swim at Deep Eddy pool several times per week, have seen this place for a while and wanted to try it as I'm often quite hungry after doing laps. Took a friend there today after our swim session...place had a suitable 'hole-in-the-wall' vibe, so expectations were for a good experience. Ordered at the counter, found a table, and hung out for only a few minutes before our orders arrived. My friend requested no mustard and ketchup instead. Burger came with mustard and no ketchup...oops. Not a huge mistake, but when you explicitly ask for something so simple...otoh, I requested swiss cheese instead of American (gag) and they got it right. Burgers were ok, but only ok, the crinkle fries were pretty bland, nothing that I haven't had at a zillion other places. The bill was sorta steep for the amount / quality of food we received. I was hungry less than an hour after we left. So, now I know what the dealio is with Pool Burger...really nothing there to inspire a repeat visit (Magnolia Cafe across the street puts out a burger that easily bests this place and I'm not particularly a fan of the place). ps: Pool Burger patrons should NOT use the Deep Eddy pool parking lot unless they also intend to visit the pool. Last time I went to pool burger I ordered the same burger I always get, Hippie burger, which is seriously my favorite veggie burger in all of Austin. However my last time going, I was very disappointed the patty was lacking its normal flavor, and there was wayyy too much mustard that was overpowering, the entire burger tasted different. This place is super cute, tucked away behind the Deep Eddy bar. Hostess said the wait would be half an hour but it was more like 10 min. Parking was weird, it's either street parking out front (not many spots) or across the way... honestly just ask bc I was quite confused. The Hippie veggie burger was actually so good, I was skeptical (I have high standards for veggie patties) and this met them for sure! They also were able to sub the meat in the patty melt for a veggie patty, which my bf really enjoyed. The guacamole and pimiento cheese combo were good but I'm not a huge fan of the latter and it's 50/50 of each dip so I probably wouldn't spend the $6 again. Drinks are fantastic, creative, and hand-crafted. They customized a pina colada for me with fresh pineapple and coconut on the spot. Burgers are so fresh and mouth-watering delicious. I always opt for the dazed and confused and my husband gets the blue Hawaiian (I think) and they never ever disappoint. Crinkle fries seem like they're frozen from a bag at first sight but are crispy, cooked to perfection. Cannot beat the ambience! It's island life all year round - decor and details are lovely down to the recipe-infused cocktail glasses and umbrellas in the drinks. However, that all being said, parking is particularly atrocious in that part of town off of Lake Austin Blvd. and it is INSANELY EXPENSIVE for the small portions you get!
