Gross is the best I can say. My husbands seafood tasted like it was dead and floating long before they ever cooked it. My burger had zero taste. The experience was...strange. It was December so our meal started with subtle Christmas music playing in the background and then without warning Jingle Bells turned into a gun shot that made you jump and the Wu-Tang Clan was blaring to the point we could not hear each other. I have no problem with one or the other but make up your mind what atmosphere you want...Oh did I mention we were the only people in the place under the age of 55. We had a great lunch. The Bacon Wrapped Shrimp appetizer was absolutely delicious. The servings on the meals were sizable. We split the Shrimp and Grits and a burger. I'm a fan of dining at local restaurants when traveling, especially 'hole-in-the-wall' establishments. We found Pollywogs on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Its website spoke of supporting local growers and farming locally. We walked inside to find a sign telling us to seat ourselves. We found it to be a bar-based restaurant but with plenty of tables. When you walk in, you definitely smelled cigarette smoke but no one was smoking. We figured, that because it was a bar, the smoke smell was coming from the walls. The night we went, it was 'all you can eat crab' night, so I was already torn. Love crabs. But in looking at the menu, I decided on the jalapeño & cheddar stuffed burgers. My friend ordered the french dip. We started with the spicy chicken dip as an appetizer. Delicious! I loved getting my water & gingerale in large Mason jars. My friend got a "healthy" glass of pinot grigio. She was very pleased. I loved my burger. It wasn't overly spicy. It had just enough flavor and was cooked as I requested. The french fries were awesome as well. The server was a very nice guy. College-aged. Very polite. The night we were there, it wasn't busy at all. The rainstorm probably kept people away but those that were there were definitely locals. My friend and I both said that we would definitely come back the next time we're working in Columbia. I live nearby and have stopped in for dinner several times in the last year. This place has great bar food, but when it steps out for more variety it is only average. Stick with the bar food. Great fries and onion rings. We had the shrimp basket, burgers and po-boys. My pet peeve with this place - - and the reason it got 2 stars - - is the way they handle condiments. They brought 2 small cups of ketchup with the fries and onion rings and made you beg for any more. Oh and with the fried shrimp you are allowed one tiny cup of either tartar sauce or cocktail sauce. If, God forbid, you would like more, they charge $.50 per cup for the cocktail sauce and $.35 per cup for tartar sauce. And people these are SMALL cups. It completely turned off my group and we have always liked this place. Next time I go - - if I ever do - - I will bring my own sauces rather than be ripped off. read more

Best restaurant in NE Cola. So much better than the typical chain restaurants that are always packed and mediocre. Don't go here if you're in a rush. If you're looking for great food and a good time its the place to go. The patio is awesome and the waitresses are always friendly. Great beer selection and good drinks. Went this evening with my family after passing by it many times. We were excited to try it as the atmosphere seemed inviting. It took awhile before our order was placed. I was pretty specific with my order due to a dairy allergy, and the waitress repeated by order word for word. The order finally came out after quite a wait. My order was slathered in the stuff I am avoiding due to allergies. I sent it back and did not get a replacement meal because it took so long in the first place, we did not have time to wait for a new meal (we have a very young baby with us). All of the french fries at our table were luke warm, rubbery, chewy, and tasted horrible. The fried ocra was slimy, oily, dark, and had a burnt taste to it. The poboys ordered at our table were not quality. It seemed that all of the fried food was fried in old oil - it had that old burnt taste to it. Not to mention the items were not hot. Not hot = not fresh! I have NEVER felt like just getting up and walking out of a restaurant in my life! We called the manager over, though I did not get her name. She was VERY defensive and said that the fries were fresh cut every morning. I said I did not doubt that they were freshly CUT every morning, however they were not hot therefore they were not fresh. She reiterated how fresh they were and did not seem to understand that they tasted disgusting and were just not edible. Even my 5 year old would not touch them and she eats anything. The manager defended the ocra saying that it is a big seller and they get "rave reviews" however it truly was very suboptimal. One member of our party ordered the au jus with fries and it was not a very good sandwich but he was starving after a very long day and ate most of the sandwich but not the fries. The manager said in a snarky tone that HE ate his sandwich so it must have been good, so we can't complain about his meal. I haven't ever met a manager who was so defensive about their food when the quality was obviously not up to standards. Overall we were very disappointed and ended up going to Chik Fil A for a MUCH more delicious meal. Had to pay for 2 meals that night, with the latter being significantly more delicious with good customer service. Out of 5 people eating, only one actually had a somewhat edible meal. What a waste of money :( I certainly do not recommend this location unless you are simply going there for the alcohol. I suppose the food tastes better after a half dozen drinks. read more

Was looking for a wonderful evening out with my wife after a stressful week. Heard many good things about Polliwogs so being that we had a livingsocial deal from them, we decided to give them a try. We walked in and were greeted by the please seat yourself sign so my wife and I headed for the deck. After waiting 20 minutes before being approached and finally given menus, we waited another 20 minutes for our orders to be taken. Finally when the food arrived they brought me the wrong meal, but I couldn't remedy the situation because our waitress disappeared. After 30 minutes of feeling annoyed that my wife was finishing her meal, but the waitress had not been back to check on us for me to tell her she brought me the wrong meal, I walked in to find her with my plate of food. Of course she was apologetic and they did take the meal off but we had to spend our livingsocial in one visit which means we got suckered out of 11 dollars. Had to get my meal to go once they finally got it right because after being there well over an hour and a half, I was tired of being an afterthought to the waitress. It is a shame because the food is incredibly delicious but no food is worth terrible service. read more

We arrived at 6:00 and our food which consisted of burgers and fried shrimp was not served until 6:45 the waitress didn't even offer to get us refills the food was nothing special. Wow. My wife and I were stunned at this place. The first bad sign was just that... a broken glass sign out front. We've driven by this place for a year and that sign has been broken the whole time. But the place otherwise looks nice from outside. Very pretty lawn and lovely palm trees in the front. Went in and it looked nice enough inside. We have noticed that for a large place they never look busy when we go by. Anyway, on the way to the bar we walk by some tables and notice some kid has french fries that look horrible. I'm familiar with that look from when I was a kid working in a restaurant and it is a sure sign of oil that is way too old to be used for cooking. Anyway we find the bar and order a Corona and their signature "blueberry martini". The Corona came out with a lime that was so slimy that we didn't even use it (we actually squeezed it but wouldn't put the lime in the bottle it was so slimy). The martini literally tasted like grape cool aid with cheap alcohol. It was terrible. So bad in fact that we slid it back to the bartender and just asked for a beer instead. Amanda (the bartender) never even asked what might be the matter, she just picked up the martini and tossed it down the drain and brought us a beer. We had previously told Amanda this was our first time there. She didn't really care. Amanda was rude. She was short with us and never brought a bar napkin or the menu after we had asked (we ended up getting both ourselves from the front desk). Anyway we notice on the bill that Amanda had charged us for the martini. We are normally very good tippers (20-30%) however, when we saw that Amanda had charged us for the martini I called her over and said that I would have tipped her an extra six dollars for removing the martini (the price of the martini) from the bill, but that I would not add the six dollars to the tip since she charged us for the terrible martini. She didn't care at all and just said people love it and "you ordered it and need to pay for it" (if she believed that wouldn't she have asked before tossing it down the drain?). She then said it is a favorite and that they sell 25 a week. We asked for the manager and unfortunately Amanda just smirked and said, "I am the manager". Oh well. Later we were thinking, ok, this is a large restaurant and if they just sell 25 of their premium martini's a week that is pretty poor. Anyway, there is no way in the world we will go back to this place. Thanks Amanda! By the way, totally unrelated, but if you do want a premium blueberry martini try The Library next time you're in Myrtle Beach. It's a pricey restaurant but it is an excellent martini. read more

My wife and I had a coupon. We had never been to Polliwogs, but the fresh food sounded appealing. There was one really bad online review, and I think we got the same waitress. We went there on a Sunday afternoon for an early dinner not realizing it's more of a sports bar. As a sports bar it seems like it would be a pretty good place, but don't go there expecting to have a quiet meal. At any rate the service was slow, and the waitress had kind of an attitude. When she asked what side I wanted with my sandwich I asked what my choices were. She replied, "there are like eight." She then pointed them out on the menu instead of just telling me. I saw one that was something-polliwogs and asked what that was. She grabbed the menu and started reading. Ironic that she seemed annoyed that I didn't know the menu better than her. I ended up with the onion rings. My wife got chicken broccoli alfredo. The food (especially the onion rings) was very good and the portions were generous. I gave it three starts because of the unwelcoming service. read more
