I just today ordered a regular bowl through Uber Eats and received a bowl that was missing the two scoops of spicy tuna I ordered and the spicy mayo. I luckily got a refund from Uber. Our experience eating lunch on May 3rd, 2017 was horrible. I normally don't provide many reviews yet this food establishment was equivalent to eating McDonald's of raw fish. The octopus was so bad, the tuna and salmon tasted both slimy/low grade and the freshness was questionable. I had diarrhea 30 minutes after returning home and my stomach ached the restt of the night. Perhaps, having been to Japan twice and experiencing high quality sashimi/sushi, my review is a bit jaded and expectations a bit higher. My wife was with me and we both said this lunch is gross. Great food, but personally I believe it's unprofessional, and immature to wear a crop top, pajama pants, and beanie at work . Especially in a food service position where all sorts of customers come in. I would have appreciated it if she had worn gloves on both hands. This is my second time in San Diego and I couldn't wait to come back here- a big bowl of fresh sushi for less than $10! $9.25 will get you 3 scoops of protein on a bed of rice or greens. Or you can get 4 scoops for $10.50. There's every kind of sushi protein you could want- sushi salmon, tuna, spicy tuna, octopus, tofu etc. Then you can get tons of tasty toppings- seaweed salad, ginger, masago, edamame, radish etc. Ordering all that from a Japanese restaurant would be $25+. Ok so we were told to stop by here for lunch. We entered, no one said anything. The menu board explained nothing. 2 scoops or 3?? During the order process we figured out that was for the fish choices. I did like that we could choose spring mix rather then rice. Paid extra for the avocado. We decided to eat in the restaurant. Is seamed like a good idea. The employees have no idea why they need to wear gloves. When I was in food service we had to take a class on cross contamination. These people have no clue. For instance. They took money, never changed gloves, went back to making bowls. They cleaned trays with same gloves on. One guy. Got a tooth pick, picked his teeth. This place is awesome. It's always busy here with a bunch of Asian people, so I'm assuming that it's pretty authentic. It took a while for me to actually like the food here because I was used to the poki bowls at Teri Cafe and other poki places. Here, they give you a bunch of options so it's up to you to make the bowls the way that you want it. The first few times, I think I just added everything into the bowl, and it tasted like crap. I'm still fine tuning my ultimate Poki bowl, but I've gotten it to just a handful of stuff, and it tastes amazing. I've never really noticed the staff unhappy. They're not like the super hyper ice cream mixers at Cold Stone, but they've never given me any problems or got my order wrong. That's another good thing. You get to micro-manage the construction of your Poki Bowl so you can avoid screw ups. There is no credit card surcharge. I usually tip them $1 or $2 depending on what kind of mood that I'm in. They're so busy, if everyone tips them a $1, they're making good money. read more

I've been here a few times since it opened and this was my first time I tried a poki bowl! It was delicious and some employees are generous with the toppings while some aren't so it's really a hit or miss when you go in but the food is AMAZING. The fish is fresh and the toppings are fresh as well. I love it here and plan to come more often. It's nice to have a dedicated Poke shop in Oceanside. Over the last 2 years they've popped up all up and down the west coast. We have a pretty solid Island population in Oceanside who was already getting poke from mostly Sushi/Japanese restaurants. The real explosion happened in LA and Orange County where hundred's popped up over the last few years. Having commuted there up until recently I had 12 poke places within 1 mile from my office, with no shortage of demand. I like to call these sort of assembly line poke shops "Chipoke". Base, fish, toppings, seasoning. It's great because it focuses your decisions rather than letting your imagination run wild, but having spent more time in Hawaii than most (family, work, pleasure) it's not how poke is eaten. Now we use more prime cuts and a more westernize palate, but what I really miss is authenticity in style and ingredients. Poke is a side dish, not an entrée and being such pairs poorly when matched with only white, brown, salad or half/half. I actually prefer to order from a Japanese restaurant in that most will use sushi rice, again that acidity and the fish pair is a proven team. I really miss ogo, limu, kukui nuts, shoyu, ginger (not just the pickled kind) which to me are staples to poke. For those that make our own at home we've all certainly made meals out of it but heck even Whole foods uses more than just goma wakame as their seaweed salad. I get that their portion size is nice and filling, but more doesn't make it better. Some things I like are they are more generous than most on the fish scoops, more often than not most places will round down on the scoops, but not here. I love that they carry Octopus, but sad they don't carry scallops which to me pair so well with sauces. They are generous on all toppings and will even do extra crab for free. Not much in the way of binding or mayo which is great and it's not nearly as shredded and reconstituted. I love how even their mild sauce blend has flavor, but with they had more spice as even their hot is not hot. Their fish is firm and fresh, but they wouldn't tell me who their purveyor was. The service line moves fast and they have solid rushes throughout the day and most of the weekend. The prices are good, but being the first true poke spot allows them to set the bar locally. Their customers certainly make use of the outdoor seating which is nice since indoor is limited. The décor is clean, simple. The store is clean and simple. I'd wish they carried a soda fountain as that tends to keep people more comfortable in eating in versus canned drinks. Not having a larger variety of Hawaiian drinks is odd because Teri's has a dozen of them and Oceanside has sort of become accustom to island food and island drinks. They could use a 2nd trash receptacle by the door, they don't recycle and could use a staging area of sauces like sriracha, so it would seem that they really are pushing to go eating with packaged sauces only. A nice variety of Macaroon ice cream is a nice offering and to me shows they care a little more about the overall experience. I've made it a point to try everything from when I come here, what I get, how I pay. Don't get me wrong I like the food(sans rice), love the convenience, but I have to mention the hospitality is suspect overall. Half the line staff are excellent using phrases like (what can I get for you today sir?, what toppings would you like?). While some staff don't even make eye contact with you when speaking (not hot, mild or hot?) not taking into account the level of comfort each customer has with poke and ordering from here. It all cumulates at the register where you see the inexperience is top down. A lot of the weakness' can be chalked up to them being new-ish, but they have failed to take some opportunities to make right certain experiences of mine and others. I'll still eat here, but only because sometimes you just don't want to sit at a sushi bar to order their version and you want more topping options and it's close to me. read more

Food is good but I have to give 1 star to the horrible management here. I've been coming 3-4 times a week since it opened. Soda machine not working or out 60% of the time (no exaggeration, someone is always working on it) and the workers are very inconsistent in the way they prepare the food. - Update, things have gotten better and more consistent. The soda machine has had a run of about 3 weeks now where it isn't broken... AMAZING. We'll see if it holds up. read more

The poke is just average, you probably need to add some Hawaiian sea salt to help bring out the flavor of the fish. Hopefully they do some tweaking so they could be successful. The fish portions are small per scoop. If it's the weekend you are better off going to Costco down the street and get that poke and put it over some homemade rice. That's how it's done in Hawaii, you don't need any other toppings. Costco poke ingredients are flown in from Hawaii and assembled in store. It's high quality. I've been to Ono Seafood on Oahu and Da Poke Shack on the Big Island so I do have some perspective. Side note: my friends had a bad experience at Poki Poki and tried to contact them to try to be helpful, so far they are ignoring them. This place is awesome! I've recently been on a poke kick and this one definitely satisfied my craving - so much I went twice in one week! It's nice that there's a place in Oceanside since there's not too many Asian options in North County, so that's a plus! They have really good portions and their sauce is really good. I usually get 3 scoops with the tuna, salmon and yellowtail and spicy sauce, extra sauce. One thing they're missing though is the furikake, and maybe wonton crisps for texture, but other than that it's perfection! There's plenty of parking in the lot and seating in the shop. I love my poke and this is where I go to get my poke fix. Stopped by on Sunday afternoon and found the place very busy. Local firefighters were there getting their poke fix too. They have a decent variety of poke and topping options. Once you get the hang of their menu and the way to order, you'll be sailing through the line like a pro. I had a large bowl which includes four scoops of the poke of your choice. I opted for the half salad, half brown rice base, two scoops of Ahi tuna and two scoops of Yellow Tail. I had them add all of the free extra toppings except Avocado (which is $1.00 extra). The poke was delicious and the mix of vegetables, rice and toppings was a meal in itself. I've had poke on appetizer menus at seafood restaurants and from the deli section in supermarkets in Honolulu but a restaurant devoted solely to Hawaiian Poke.....WOW Four of us ordered poke bowls of various different combinations choosing the many types of fish and seafood, the several toppings, and the caliber of hot or not so spicy sauces. The fish included spicy tuna, yellowtail, salmon, and regular Ahi tuna. Octopus and shrimp were available too. Toppings like seaweed, masago (eggs), avocado, and krab meat to mention some of the many to pick from. You choose rice or lettuce or both to form a bed under everything. All items were so fresh and delicious!! Everyone enjoyed their poke bowls down to the finish line. Service was very friendly and attentive from the personnel on duty for lunch. The place was kept very clean I noticed despite having a decent rush during the prime 12:00 lunch hour. I am hoping a place similar to this has caught on back home in Florida where I am going next. I've been told Poki Poki is a chain restaurant in this area as another store is about to go up nearby by my sisters workplace in Carlsbad. An excellent new trend and healthy idea. This is a build-your-own poke bowl place. Choose a base (white rice, brown rice, or salad) and then if you get a regular, you can choose three scoops of protein. Large gets you a similar sized bowl, just four scoops of protein. Choose from raw cubes of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, marinated shrimp, octopus, and crab salad. Non-fish toppings are free like seaweed salad, ginger, wasabi, and masago (smelt roe). A variety of sauces can be added as well. I went a little crazy with a little bit of everything, but the flavors came together well, not too saucy or salty. The fish tasted fresh. The portion was massive, but I destroyed it. Overall, this is a major boon for Oceanside since the only other place I know of that serves anything like this is Teri Cafe, which is a bit more involved and not poke bowl focused by any means. In Carlsbad, there is Yoshino, which is very small and runs out of poke bowls quickly. Yoshino is also cash-only and there are only three types of preset poke bowl mixes. Fresh and delicious. I was excited to see a poki place opening in Oceanside. It was clean and there were 3 employees working. I thought the price was a bit high starting at $9.99 but the portion was satisfying for me. The food can be made gluten free by not getting any sauces. Bring your own gluten free soy sauce. The employees did not know what gluten was or if the sauces had gluten in them so eat at your own risk if you are allergic. I'm not so I will visit again but probably not with the family. You pick your size (# of scoops)..then you start picking your ingredients. Choices range from ahi, to shrimp, salmon and even octopus. You can pick several spice levels and add ons such as avocado, spicy mayo, seaweed etc, then watch it all hand made in front of you. The freshness level is on point of sure!
