This has been our top choice for Thai in Astoria for 20+ years... at least it feels like that long because it feels so familiar. The curries are flavorful with generous portions that are very split-able and the noodles are the perfect balance of soft and chewy with a sweet and/or spicy kick - depending on your choice. The soups are also comforting and a nice winter addition. If you want something a little special, go with one of the family recipes. Our favorite is Uncle New's crab curry which is rich...bordering on decadent. I have a hard time not ordering it every time! I'm a little embarrassed to say I've only sat down inside a couple of times in all this time and never for a lunch or early bird special (dumb!), but the space is welcoming and cozy. As a service to us all - please understand, noobs, that the outer winter door is designed to open only when the inner door is closed and vice versa! Otherwise what is the point? This place was such a disappointment. We were offered the early bird special menu but were told that we could not order from that menu because it was past 7:00 PM. Mind you, we were waiting for our waitress to take our order and didn't want to hound her down as we thought we would be honored the special. While of course we could have came a few minutes earlier to order before 7:00 PM, we thought this was tasteless as why would you even offer that menu in the first place? Our first waitress also gave off a very unwelcoming attitude and even "slammed" our drink cups down, which shocked my boyfriend and me. I ignored the situation and assumed that it was not intentional until the table next to us tipped VERY poorly to that specific waitress, which told me that she most likely provided bad service to that table as well. I will say that I enjoyed their pad see ew and that the other waitress was friendly. However, my boyfriend did not enjoy his entree or appetizer. We had food left over but did not take it home. I tried Pochana yesterday and was disappointed. Their menu is limited and service not that great. I asked for my usual, pineapple duck curry and it came back too spicy. The restaurant looks appealing from the outside, but inside that's another story. I won't be back As you may have gathered from my other reviews on Thai restaurants, I like everything with duck. So I was naturally disappointed. In fact, while I was waiting, one couple left the restaurant. Maybe I am a little generous today, but they really deserve two stars! I visited Pochana in Astoria twice because I wanted to give the place a fair chance since the food was actually very good. I ordered the Pad Thai both times and it was flavorful, fresh, and honestly one of the better Thai dishes I've had in the area. Unfortunately, the customer service completely changed the experience for me and my coworkers. The staff came across as very unfriendly and unwelcoming both visits. I asked for soy sauce with my meal and couldn't even get it, and we felt rushed out of the restaurant instead of welcomed as paying customers. I don't want to assume or label the situation unfairly, but the atmosphere genuinely did not feel warm or inviting toward us. Since we're staying nearby for a few weeks, we were hoping to find a Thai spot we could keep coming back to, but because of the service and attitude, I won't be returning. With my girlfriend, we got the crab Rangoon and tom yum soup - the soup being to my liking which is nice because I'm usually not in the mood sourness of the soup - this one wasn't. For our entrees we got the pad Thai and green curry and both were very solid staple dishes to have - you can't go wrong with it. The green curry was actually a nice kick in spice and was smooth in texture! Came here for the Early Bird Special that they offer between 5-7PM every Monday - Friday with my significant other. Was able to get one appetizer, an entree, a dessert, and a drink all for a whooping $16. Where can you get all of this for $16 elsewhere? For the special we got Tofu Fries and Yao Wa Raj Dumplings for the appetizers. There were only 2 to 3 pieces so you'll definitely not get full on these alone. For the entree, we ordered the Chicken Pad See Ew and Shrimp Green Curry. Good sized portions and delicious. Getting chicken is an additional $2 of the deal while shrimp or beef is an additional $3. Otherwise you can get tofu or vegetable, where there's no additional charge. For drinks, we had to get a Thai Iced Tea and Thai Iced Coffee. Can't go wrong with either. The meal ends with a Coconut Ice Cream, which is worth sticking to the end for. Also a really nice way to end the meal. Note that they do not have a liquor license, or no alcohol is served here. So we also got a few of their mocktails, which were not bad! Don't remember the names of the drink unfortunately. I came here on a weekday around 6 to snag the special (which runs weekdays 5-7). I'm happy to report there is literally no catch to this deal, just a great deal to be had. I started off with a Thai iced tea which was delicious and strong. I had the spring rolls for my app, my date had the fried tofu. Both were hot and flavorful. We both went with the Pad Kee Mao as our main, which was just the right amount of spicy, and a pretty decent portion size. The ice cream dessert was sweet and refreshing. I am a glutton so I definitely could've eaten a lot more after but my friends were full and satisfied by the portion sizes.
