This morning we had breakfast at Poached Kitchen -- and it's quickly become a regular for us. We used to go to their Downey location, but now that they've opened one in Whittier (only 10 minutes away ), it's our go-to. First off, the space is beautiful -- tons of natural light, great music, and an upbeat, welcoming vibe that's perfect for a breakfast spot. The staff is always friendly, attentive, and super helpful. Now, the food. I ordered the breakfast burrito -- it's ginormous and packed with potatoes, sausage, chorizo, cheese, and eggs. Super flavorful and honestly one of those meals where you just want to keep eating even when you're full. We also shared the blueberry ricotta pancake for the table and it was stellar. The blueberry compote wasn't overly sweet, and the ricotta balanced everything out perfectly. To drink, I tried the dulce de leche latte (I usually go for the vanilla), and it was so good -- definitely adding it into the rotation. My friend had the eggs Benedict and was raving about it too. This is an order at the counter and go sit style establishment. They will bring the food out to you. It is a bit pricey, but the food was delicious. I tried the birria Benedict and it was a large portion, great flavor, and a hint of spice. My husband tried the salmon Benedict and really enjoyed it. My favorite was the seasonal waffle. Food here is always made fresh. The ingredients to my breakfast chilaquiles (green) are all cooked to perfection and more than enough for a perfect serving! Black beans that come with my meal are just the right side to this meal and you can get your eggs made to your choice. Service is frequently offered at table and the ambiance to my choice outside dining is so beautiful and welcoming. I give this breakfast location a HUGE must try! We arrived right around opening, and I loved the casual ordering style: order at the register like a café, grab a number, and choose your own table. We tried the classic breakfast plate with bacon, potatoes, and scrambled eggs, along with their seasonal Pumpkin & Pear Cream French Toast. The breakfast plate was large, filling, and nicely presented. The French toast was delicious and the pear was perfectly juicy, but there was a slight aftertaste from a sprinkle of seasoning (maybe nutmeg or cloves) that I personally wasn't a fan of. Service was also fast and friendly. Even though it's a more casual setup, they checked in on us regularly to make sure we were doing okay, which I appreciated. I also ordered a green tea matcha latte -- 10/10. So good. It is on the pricier side for brunch, but honestly that seems to be the norm these days. I really wanted to like this spot, but the experience was well below expectations. I ordered the Chile Verde Omelette, and while the pork was tender, the dish was incredibly dry. There was barely any sauce inside or on top, which is the whole point of a chile verde dish. To make matters worse, the chicken sausage was served completely cold. The service was equally disappointing. After the food was dropped off, I was essentially ignored. No one ever came back to check on the meal or offer an iced tea refill. It's hard to justify a tip when the only "service" provided is the initial delivery of the plates. Unfortunately, I won't be rushing back. read more

This is a new breakfast spot located in what used to be a bank. Plenty of parking in the back. We got lucky, we arrived just as they had a table open up. You order your food at the counter, get a number, then find a table. It's was pretty busy. Everything we ate was delicious. Even the breakfast potatoes were cooked just right, with just the right amount of seasoning and the right amount of roasting do they were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside side. I had the vegetable omelette with cheese. It had just the right amount of cheese inside so you could taste and appreciate the vegetables. Many times the cheese overwhelms the vegetables. We all remarked how good our meals tasted. The only downside is since you pay ahead the tip is added ahead before you are served. So you can't tip extra for great service. read more

Amazing morning family date. We enjoyed our visit but there were a long wait. When we finally got in we order at the cashier first and then they give us a table number to sit on. We found ours and enjoyed a fresh cup of cool water. Staff were friendly and helpful. There's plenty of parking space as long as there's movement happening otherwise, there's no parking haha. I'd rather go to Chick-fil-A across the street. The Chilaquiles were the best item at our table, but damn, $12 add on for steak? Sheesh. This place is overpriced for mid food. Tried this location for the first time. Not the best breakfast/brunch spot. The layout of it all seems off. You have to check in at front with worker, they take your name, you go and order, and then sit down at assigned table. However, servers are not coming around to see if you need water, utensils or anything. Once they drop the food off you have no interaction with any help. My bf had to go and walk inside to get sugars for coffee and utensils. This seems like a chaotic place if you have more than 10 people in your party. The food is just okay, nothing special. The egg whites I had were watery and the pork sausage links weren't appealing to eat. The sourdough, hash browns and avocado were very fresh and my bf liked the sauce of his chilaquiles. We got cold brews and they came black, no sugar or milk the side, and was a bit bitter. Overheard the table next to us ask 3 busboys and 2 staff if they can get their food that was super late to come out. A little disappointing overall, had higher hopes for a new exciting spot in town. read more

My friend ordered the short rib and was disappointed because the meat was shredded. Not sure if it's described that way on menu. I finding that most restaurants now that offer home fries give a prepped frozen version rather than a fresh peeled or skin on potato with bell peppers and onions. Poached does this too so potatoes not fresh. I'll try the hash browns next time. I had the greek omlette. I did like that. My sour dough was not pre-buttered. I didn't mind. I didn't ask server for butter. My other friend ordered the chicken sandwich she only mentioned the fries were good, but she didn't finish her sandwich. I ordered a dulce de leche coffee hot. That was good not too hot so I didn't have to wait for it yo cool down to sip. Last note the women's restroom did not have a bin in the stall for used feminine hygiene products. Apple pancakes tasted like microwaved pancakes that were not fresh. And the apple was just meh. So pricey and not worth the $$$$.for the price it should have real servers. The sourdough was real sourdough, like from a bakery, not a processed loaf, and served with strawberry jam, not a packet from the table. And they have Cholula. My honey ordered the Huevos Rancheros with potatoes and flour tortillas. The black beans, tortillas, and potatoes were good, and he liked the way the eggs were served tostada style. The only thing he would have preferred was a house salsa instead of the pico de gallo. Attentive service even though you order at the counter and food is delivered to the table. I was really excited for this business to open in Whittier as I have been to the location in Downey. First, they did a horrible job in the placement of the front door. It is on the street side and VERY difficult to get to. They should have made the entrance on the parking lot side and made the to go orders on the street side instead. The coffee is good, not too sweet. I had the lavender latte and my hubby had a regular coffee. The food was superb (french toast). My hubby had the French toast and I had the chilaquilles rojo (vegan). I tried his French toast and DAYUM! So damn good. It literally melted on my mouth. The chilaquilles were good, but I have had better. I also had the breakfast burrito to go and it was good. I have also had the granola with fruit. I love the decor with an ode to Whittier and it's local HS (La Serna and Cal). What I am not happy about is the price. Expect to pay! Foods are stand alone. Nothing comes with the pancakes or French toast. The burrito was so pricey and the size did not justify it at all. The coffee was also extremely high, for smaller sizes cup. Overall it is good for breakfast dates for two, but not for families - even though they have a kids menu. read more
