Small cozy dining experience! The decor takes you to Mexico. The food is fresh, hot n cooked to authentic Mexican standard. I had the Mar y Tierra with corn tortillas. ¡Absolutamente delicioso! If you can't afford to go to Mexico or southern California for the authentic taste of Mexico, Playa Chac Mool is your local taste of Mexico. Great live music! Outdoor covered patio dining option. One block walking distance to St. Augustine Beach. Kid's menu available. Waiters/waitresses very attentive. Souvenirs available. A definite candidate for best authentic Mexican dining experience in St. Augustine/Jacksonville.

Unique family-owned spot with great traditional Mexican fare. Where to begin. We were greeted by the server who was kind and hospitable to us and our baby. She was so sweet and attentive throughout the evening, even with having to manage most of the restaurants orders. Service was top notch. The live music was great touch. We found out mid-meal that it was the owner of the restaurant. His daughter got up and sang a song too! Really fun experience. The food came out quick and was solid. The shrimp mojo de ajo was a shining star. I asked for some house hot sauce and so glad I did -- easily some of the best hot sauce I've ever had. I'm in love. The margs were strong, beers were cold, and guac refreshing. I'm an out-of-towner, but I'll be back.

Good mexican menu and price is reasonable. Food taste like typical mexican food. Server was very nice and there was a live performer.

The food was so delicious. We got the shrimp Diablo and pollo chac mool and both were ADDICTIVE. I will definitely be back!

Friendly family-owned business! We had east going dinner listening to live music. The nachos were tasty particularly with the fajita steak added on. The staff chatted us up and we're just the right amount of attentive. Thank you!

The service at Playa Chac Mool is five star. We had two servers, both friendly and anticipated our needs. One brought crayons and coloring sheet over to tame our cantankerous toddler. And when she heard a fork drop, she rushed over with a fresh place setting. The other server checked on us regularly and kept our drinks filled. We were treated like royalty. The building is small and cute with limited parking. The inside is decorated with Mexican decor and was decorated for Christmas when we were there. There was an enclosed patio area and a main dining room with about 30 tables. The place was comfortable and about half full at 1:00 on Sunday afternoon. We were seated promptly. The food was ok, typical Mexican. My taco salad was massive served in a fried flour tortilla. Lots of iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, seasoned ground beef, sour cream, guacamole, and cheese. It was very filling but nothing special. My husband really enjoyed his plate of assorted enchiladas.

Classic college town Mexican restaurant vibes--consistent flavor, good prices, tasty food. We got chips and queso and salsa (chips do not come complimentary) and bean and cheese quesadillas. The queso was delicious, and the quesadilla was simple but good. They said they were understaffed but the service was still speedy and excellent. And the live music was wonderful!

Roof top had several tables open and about 9 occupied. I asked if we could sit anywhere and the terse response was we would have to go down and sign in. I suggested they add a sign. The rest of us waited and I went downstairs and secured one of the open tables with the staff downstairs. We got upstairs and all ordered margaritas from an eager and very friendly waitress. After a few minutes we got our drinks and It started to rain so she suggested we go to the bar. Another awful woman said we would need to go outside. You want us to stand outside in the rain, one of us asked. She stormed off slinging things around to demonstrate her petty frustration truth her customers to whom they had sold drinks. A gentleman behind the bar said we could stay at the bar but the bar was closing. (Inside there were many tables still eating, and some customers stayed out outside eating under their umbrellas. Another woman, much more gracious, approached us and said we would indeed need to go the bar on the first floor as they were still open. Okay we said, but when we got to the bar, another unhappy lady behind the downstairs bar said no, they were closing the bar and suggested we drink outside. It's raining outside, we said, and the staff upstairs said to come here. Well, we are closing, she said and you can't sit here. There were several tables still eating downstairs too. We put our drinks down and walked across the street to the Tradewinds where they couldn't have been more friendly or welcoming. We will be back in Old Town tonight and we won't be stopping back at Casa Reina. Una Reina Que tál vez tiene un baton metida por su culo. Hasta nunca.

Large portions, beautiful plates and silverware, and quaint, cozy ambiance in America's oldest city. Fast forward to Saturday the 14th, and I'm back again with family visiting from out of the country. The food was good, but the vibe was a bit different. Started with chips & salsa - good, but hardly any chips. We had 3/4 of a dish of salsa remaining after finishing the chips, and we were told that we would have to pay for a refill of chips. Very sad! We also ordered two taco platters, and three chicken quesadilla platters. Food was good, but the side portions (beans and rice) were very small, and served in tiny plastic cups. The plates and silverware were replaced with cardboard plates/trays and plastic cutlery. Although the food was good, the presentation was disappointing. Our waitress did a good job, so kudos to her! $120+ before a tip - a couple more chips would have been nice, and real plates and silver would have been amazing.....just saying.

Cold Midwest refugees, meet your Mexican savior (with a side of nostalgia)…read more We were visiting from -- or more accurately, escaping -- the frozen Midwest to soak up the magic of St. Augustine's Night of Lights. Magical? Yes. Crowded? Also yes. Parking? A full-contact sport. So we did what any rational, slightly hangry tourists would do: asked ChatGPT for a local favorite with parking that wouldn't make us cry. Enter Cantina Louie -- and honestly, bless this place. First impressions: the atmosphere is a little kitschy, cute, and refreshingly simple. Nothing pretentious, nothing trying too hard. In fact, we were about 90% sure it used to be an old Pizza Hut -- you know, the Pizza Hut -- with the iconic red roof. And honestly? That just unlocked a wave of childhood nostalgia. Somewhere between ordering breadsticks in the '90s and now ordering margaritas as adults, it all came full circle. Now, the food. We ordered La Parrilla, which arrived like it had something to prove. Fajita chicken, pulled pork, carne asada, steak carne asada, and Mexican street corn all piled together in a sizzling, aromatic flex. Every bite made us pause, look at each other, and ask, "Wait... is THIS the best one?" Spoiler: we never decided. As if that wasn't enough, we added the appetizer sampler, because self-control was not on the itinerary. Two enchiladas, mini taquitos, pineapple pork al pastor, avocado, salsa, and guacamole -- basically a greatest-hits album of Mexican comfort food. And the salsa? Unreal. We debated drinking it. With a straw. No shame. Let's talk value. All that food came in under $40. Under. Forty. Dollars. In a tourist town. During peak season. Somewhere, an accountant wept tears of joy. To hydrate (for science), we ordered two 1850 margaritas -- one classic, one strawberry. Both were generously sized, dangerously smooth, and absolutely doing the Lord's work. One sip in and we forgot all about traffic, crowds, and the cold Midwest we left behind. Final verdict: Cantina Louie didn't just save us from parking chaos -- it fed us, watered us, and gave us a warm hug of Pizza Hut nostalgia. If you're in St. Augustine during Night of Lights and don't want to wrestle a parking meter for tacos, this is the move. We came for the lights. We stayed for the salsa.
