The salsa was fantastic and just the right amount of sweet, the queso was great & fresh, and the tacos were wonderful as well. It was a little pricey for a casual Mexican restaurant, $23 for three tacos but I guess that is what you should expect for a restaurant right off the beach. On November 14th, 2025 I catered Playa Chac Mool for a family party. The food was delicious and Violeta was wonderful to work with. The food was ready exactly on time and packaged in a manner easy to transport. Her advice that the Taco Bar was the easiest and best option to feed 40 people was spot on. Who doesn't like a good taco,? The chicken fajita and ground beef was completely eaten. Everyone enjoyed the food and repeatedly told me it was delicious. I know the food was good because there was only beans and rice leftover. I highly recommend Playa Chac Mool if you want a sit down meal in the restaurant or to cater for a large casual crowd. read more

Playa Chac Mool is a great location, a few blocks from St Augustine beach. Ambiance is comfortable, a smaller restaurant with appropriately 20 tables, it's a good idea to come early or likely there is a bit of a wait. Can accommodate parties as large as 10. May have live music on weekends. Service is great. Friendly and attentive with good advice if you are having trouble deciding on a menu option. Staff were able to accommodate our requests for some cook options without any issue. Great selection of beers and mixed drinks. Menu is a little more limited but the focus means dishes are all good- can't go wrong here with any options include make your own combo plates. Portions and prices are fair and a little lacking on the amount of protein served in dishes but flavors are very good and portion sizes were filling combined with the appetizer we ordered. The Chac Mool sauce offered here is unique. Smokey with a bit of heat, it is rich and quite tasty. Also great with chips. A nice dining experience with strong marks across the board for ambience, service and food. Four stars due to the protein portions being on the small side. Definitely worth a try. read more

Unique family-owned spot with great traditional Mexican fare. Where to begin. We were greeted by the server who was kind and hospitable to us and our baby. She was so sweet and attentive throughout the evening, even with having to manage most of the restaurants orders. Service was top notch. The live music was great touch. We found out mid-meal that it was the owner of the restaurant. His daughter got up and sang a song too! Really fun experience. The food came out quick and was solid. The shrimp mojo de ajo was a shining star. I asked for some house hot sauce and so glad I did -- easily some of the best hot sauce I've ever had. I'm in love. They have a nice screened patio with a lot of trees (but not too many) that keep it shaded nicely. They have a nice selection of beers, including my go-to Pacifico. I started with chips and guacamole. Next to my own, this was the best damn guac I've had. It wasn't loaded with onions or chunks of garlic like some other places. It was simple and delicious. I ordered shrimp tacos and they were grilled perfectly. I wish I had saved room for dessert. Overall, I highly recommend this place if you are in St. Augustine. read more

The service at Playa Chac Mool is five star. We had two servers, both friendly and anticipated our needs. One brought crayons and coloring sheet over to tame our cantankerous toddler. And when she heard a fork drop, she rushed over with a fresh place setting. The other server checked on us regularly and kept our drinks filled. We were treated like royalty. The building is small and cute with limited parking. The inside is decorated with Mexican decor and was decorated for Christmas when we were there. There was an enclosed patio area and a main dining room with about 30 tables. The place was comfortable and about half full at 1:00 on Sunday afternoon. We were seated promptly. The food was ok, typical Mexican. My taco salad was massive served in a fried flour tortilla. Lots of iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, seasoned ground beef, sour cream, guacamole, and cheese. Best Mexican food I've had in a long time!!! We'd just finished our walk up the lighthouse, and a stroll around the area and had developed quite the appetite. On our way back to the hotel, we happened to spot this little hidden, hole in the wall type Mexican restaurant. And we all love Mexican food! We were a little scared at first because it seemed deserted but when we walked in, everyone was o welcoming and friendly! Turns out, there were a couple other tables of folks there, too. It was an off night/time. They had a fella playing live music in one corner of the room, which we aren't usually a fan of (it's usually too loud for us) but this was actually really nice and subdued. Our orders arrived quickly and perfectly and everything tasted fantastically. I had the steak fajitas (mmmmmm!!!), husband had the pick-two (chimichanga and taco) and kid had the taco meal. Everyone was very pleased with their orders. They were having a drawing for a gift card. We entered because, even though we aren't from the area, we'd love to come back again! Who am I kidding? We stopped in here while staying in the St. Augustine Beach area. This restaurant is very casual with a little bit of fun and brightly colored decor! They have seating inside and a small covered patio outside. I do not believe they are per friendly, FYI. They do have happy hour specials on certain days of the week, so we went with margaritas. My husband ordered shrimp chimichanga. He really liked it. I tasted the rice and it was fluffy, which is a positive. I've had hard rice at so many other Mexican spots. I was not super hungry, so I had a quesadilla, it was about average. I wasn't feeling the type of cheese that they put in it.
