Stopped here to get a late lunch after some time at beach and thoroughly enjoyed it! I believe our waiter was the owner and he was extremely nice & attentive! The salsa was fantastic and just the right amount of sweet, the queso was great & fresh, and the tacos were wonderful as well. It was a little pricey for a casual Mexican restaurant, $23 for three tacos but I guess that is what you should expect for a restaurant right off the beach. That being said we had a great experience and recommend it to those wanting quality Mexican food in the area! read more

Family run place. Simple. Nothing amazing but a nice homey atmosphere and good basic Mexican.

Our party of 7 arrived at 5pm on a Saturday, and we were seated immediately. Staff was friendly, service was prompt, meals were tasty and authentic (plus a hot dog for our picky eater). Enjoyed the live music. Not too loud. We'll be back! read more

My favorite Mexican place. Great food, service, very nice staff at good prices, very authentic

This place is a true gem! The food is fresh, high-quality, and full of authentic Yucatán flavors you don't find everywhere. You can really taste the tradition in every dish. It's family-owned, which makes the experience feel warm and welcoming, and the beautiful décor adds such a special touch. Highly recommend for anyone craving real, traditional Mexican cuisine! read more

Small cozy dining experience! The decor takes you to Mexico. The food is fresh, hot n cooked to authentic Mexican standard. I had the Mar y Tierra with corn tortillas. ¡Absolutamente delicioso! If you can't afford to go to Mexico or southern California for the authentic taste of Mexico, Playa Chac Mool is your local taste of Mexico. Great live music! Outdoor covered patio dining option. One block walking distance to St. Augustine Beach. Kid's menu available. Waiters/waitresses very attentive. Souvenirs available. On November 14th, 2025 I catered Playa Chac Mool for a family party. The food was delicious and Violeta was wonderful to work with. The food was ready exactly on time and packaged in a manner easy to transport. Her advice that the Taco Bar was the easiest and best option to feed 40 people was spot on. Who doesn't like a good taco,? The chicken fajita and ground beef was completely eaten. Everyone enjoyed the food and repeatedly told me it was delicious. I know the food was good because there was only beans and rice leftover. I highly recommend Playa Chac Mool if you want a sit down meal in the restaurant or to cater for a large casual crowd. read more

Playa Chac Mool is a great location, a few blocks from St Augustine beach. Ambiance is comfortable, a smaller restaurant with appropriately 20 tables, it's a good idea to come early or likely there is a bit of a wait. Can accommodate parties as large as 10. May have live music on weekends. Service is great. Friendly and attentive with good advice if you are having trouble deciding on a menu option. Staff were able to accommodate our requests for some cook options without any issue. Great selection of beers and mixed drinks. Menu is a little more limited but the focus means dishes are all good- can't go wrong here with any options include make your own combo plates. Portions and prices are fair and a little lacking on the amount of protein served in dishes but flavors are very good and portion sizes were filling combined with the appetizer we ordered. The Chac Mool sauce offered here is unique. Smokey with a bit of heat, it is rich and quite tasty. Also great with chips. A nice dining experience with strong marks across the board for ambience, service and food. Four stars due to the protein portions being on the small side. Definitely worth a try. read more

This is a great little family owned place. Everything great. Food and service! We went 1 or 2 times per week during our snowbird stay.

Nice Mexican place. Traditional menu with some extras. Service is good and food was done right. Try the house hot sauce with the traditional salsa and queso for some extra heat. read more

Unique family-owned spot with great traditional Mexican fare. Where to begin. We were greeted by the server who was kind and hospitable to us and our baby. She was so sweet and attentive throughout the evening, even with having to manage most of the restaurants orders. Service was top notch. The live music was great touch. We found out mid-meal that it was the owner of the restaurant. His daughter got up and sang a song too! Really fun experience. The food came out quick and was solid. The shrimp mojo de ajo was a shining star. I asked for some house hot sauce and so glad I did -- easily some of the best hot sauce I've ever had. I'm in love. The margs were strong, beers were cold, and guac refreshing. I'm an out-of-towner, but I'll be back. read more

I was originally headed to a different restaurant but the traffic was ridiculous. Point is, I didn't plan to go here, but I'm so glad I did. They have a nice screened patio with a lot of trees (but not too many) that keep it shaded nicely. They have a nice selection of beers, including my go-to Pacifico. I started with chips and guacamole. Next to my own, this was the best damn guac I've had. It wasn't loaded with onions or chunks of garlic like some other places. It was simple and delicious. I ordered shrimp tacos and they were grilled perfectly. I wish I had saved room for dessert. Overall, I highly recommend this place if you are in St. Augustine. read more

Loved this place. Small, family owned at the end of my street! Owners stopped and chatted to make sure our meal was just as we expected. Great time always. read more

The service at Playa Chac Mool is five star. We had two servers, both friendly and anticipated our needs. One brought crayons and coloring sheet over to tame our cantankerous toddler. And when she heard a fork drop, she rushed over with a fresh place setting. The other server checked on us regularly and kept our drinks filled. We were treated like royalty. The building is small and cute with limited parking. The inside is decorated with Mexican decor and was decorated for Christmas when we were there. There was an enclosed patio area and a main dining room with about 30 tables. The place was comfortable and about half full at 1:00 on Sunday afternoon. We were seated promptly. The food was ok, typical Mexican. My taco salad was massive served in a fried flour tortilla. Lots of iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, seasoned ground beef, sour cream, guacamole, and cheese. It was very filling but nothing special. My husband really enjoyed his plate of assorted enchiladas. read more

Best Mexican food I've had in a long time!!! We'd just finished our walk up the lighthouse, and a stroll around the area and had developed quite the appetite. On our way back to the hotel, we happened to spot this little hidden, hole in the wall type Mexican restaurant. And we all love Mexican food! We were a little scared at first because it seemed deserted but when we walked in, everyone was o welcoming and friendly! Turns out, there were a couple other tables of folks there, too. It was an off night/time. They had a fella playing live music in one corner of the room, which we aren't usually a fan of (it's usually too loud for us) but this was actually really nice and subdued. Our orders arrived quickly and perfectly and everything tasted fantastically. I had the steak fajitas (mmmmmm!!!), husband had the pick-two (chimichanga and taco) and kid had the taco meal. Everyone was very pleased with their orders. They were having a drawing for a gift card. We entered because, even though we aren't from the area, we'd love to come back again! Who am I kidding? We'll come back even without the gift card. It's that good! read more

Classic college town Mexican restaurant vibes--consistent flavor, good prices, tasty food. We got chips and queso and salsa (chips do not come complimentary) and bean and cheese quesadillas. The queso was delicious, and the quesadilla was simple but good. They said they were understaffed but the service was still speedy and excellent. And the live music was wonderful! read more

We stopped in here while staying in the St. Augustine Beach area. This restaurant is very casual with a little bit of fun and brightly colored decor! They have seating inside and a small covered patio outside. I do not believe they are per friendly, FYI. They do have happy hour specials on certain days of the week, so we went with margaritas. My husband ordered shrimp chimichanga. He really liked it. I tasted the rice and it was fluffy, which is a positive. I've had hard rice at so many other Mexican spots. I was not super hungry, so I had a quesadilla, it was about average. I wasn't feeling the type of cheese that they put in it. Overall a good experience though, the waiter who took care of us was very pleasant too. read more

Stopped in for lunch. I had chicken fajitas. They were good and are served with sour cream and guacamole which many restaurants upcharge for. Husband had the chimichanga which is offered with ground beef or chicken. It was much smaller than any he's had but it was enough for lunch and it also came with sour cream and guacamole. Service was fast and friendly. read more

Really wanted Mexican food and before we were able to check into our Airbnb we decided to try this place. The appearance is a little hole in the wall, but these are almost always the best. Sure glad we did, the food was excellent, staff very friendly and attentive. Had the chicken combo plate with hard taco, chimichanga and enchilada, with rice and beans. Also the house margarita was good, which most places are too sweet. Highly recommended read more

The first time I visited was with my husband back in July of 2018. Then, in September of 2019 I returned while on a trip with my mother. Then this past Saturday, July 3, 2021, my husband and I returned with another couple and the food and drinks have been delicious each time.
