Some of the best restaurant discoveries happen when you aren't looking for them. Susan, Apollo, and I were simply out for a Sunday drive when the weather turned rainy, so we decided to stop into Cinco de Mayo in St. Augustine. From the outside it looks like a fairly typical neighborhood Mexican restaurant, but walking inside quickly changed our expectations. The dining room is much larger than it appears, with colorful décor, a beautiful bar, and while we were there, a brother and sister musical duo began performing live. Before long people were dancing and enjoying themselves, giving the restaurant a fun energy that you simply cannot manufacture. The food more than lived up to the atmosphere. The Queso Fundido con Chorizo was absolutely outstanding. Creamy melted cheese blended with flavorful chorizo created one of those appetizers where everyone keeps saying they're finished, but somehow another chip finds its way into the bowl. It earned one of our Best of the Best Dish Awards, which we reserve for dishes that truly stand out. The Especial Cinco de Mayo Combination Fajitas were equally impressive. The sizzling platter arrived loaded with steak, chicken, shrimp, chorizo, and even a beef rib, with shrimp displayed dramatically on a skewer. The presentation was spectacular, but fortunately the flavors backed it up. Everything was cooked perfectly, portions were generous, and the addition of melted cheese made the dish even better. Peter enjoyed the La Catrina Margarita, while Susan ordered the Peach Margarita. Both were well crafted and complemented the meal beautifully. Our server Lil was wonderful throughout the afternoon, and as dog lovers we especially appreciated how she treated Apollo. She brought him water and had the kitchen prepare him a plain grilled chicken breast just for him. That level of hospitality leaves a lasting impression. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food, generous portions, handcrafted margaritas, and a lively atmosphere, Cinco de Mayo is definitely worth visiting. read more

I had had some fantastic takeout from this place so I decided to give it a go for a lunch break, which I regret. We ordered 4 appetizers and that somehow equated to a 45 minute wait with only two other tables occupied. Pros: Younger hostess was helpful and understanding. Chorizo Queso was great. When there was an issue, they took initiative to adjust the experience. Cons: Plantains were flavorful and moist, but serving was quite small for the price. Empanadas were dry with hardly a hit of chicken in them. Elote and the street corn were simply corn, mayo, and cheese; zero seasoning. All in all, the tajin we requested saved the corn and the hostess saved my experience. I'd do the Fajita salad to go again, but I'm not sure I'd take the chance to wait again while on break. read more

Nice little restaurant near Palencia, it mentioned authentic, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me. I ordered quesabirria tacos they were good but the cheese was off, It would have been better with Mexican cheese or queso fresco. The conzume was good, and flavorful. I did a side of refried beans those were okay, I've had better. We also ordered two horchatas. Now horchata needs to nail it, since it is so simple to make. Here it tasted like the one in a packet that processes in a machine. I could be wrong but I am from California and know my authentic mexican food, from family friends, and a select few places that really nail the dishes, and flavors. Have been regular customers for over 3 years. Over the past 6 months or so have noticed a decline in quality of food. Salsa is much "thinner", lettuce with fajitas was rusty, and not sure what they have done to the beans - orange instead of brown. Chicken in fajitas appears to include dark meat instead of all white meat. Chips are cold and no longer warm. Sadly we may search for a better quality Mexican restaurant. read more

I enjoyed this place. This was a random night out with my friends in-laws. It was an interesting night. Obviously popular, there were a TON of children. Unsure if that aspect was random or not, but they really should invest in more high chairs. The server stated that the one that was free was broken and all the rest were in use. So we had to wait until someone finished. Someone did end up finishing. I got a margarita, which was good and the fajitas. It was super delicious. The chips and salsa were good. I love love this place. Family owned restaurant. Manny is a super nice manager. Very welcoming. My husband and I started with the Atlantic Avenue location when they first opened a few years ago. Location is also a great place. We live in the Bartram Springs location off of Race Track Road and so glad they now have this brand-new location (Palencia) and the World Golf Village area location to pick from. Highly recommend. Cinco De Mayo is a small Mexican restraunt that has a unique decor. The wait staff are very polite and knowledgeable about the menu. My wife and I ordered the Nachos Supreme, no meat. The Nachos are drowned in white caso along with lettuce and a thick cut tomato on top. Unfortunately the caso was thick and the chips were soggy underneath the beans. I ordered the Fahita Salad and my wife ordered the Fish Tacos. Needless to say, very, very salty and, again, caso filled on both dishes.
