I enjoyed pursuing the racks of clothing. Everything was clean, ROYGBIV'ed, hung nicely and organized by stylized items of clothing. The store smelled like clean laundry, not sure where someone had a different impression. As far as selling the items, I honestly can't give an answer however one should realize that product does sell as well as it does online, thus why they probably offer so little. No one really shops at these types of stores anymore, its basically checking out sites like Thredup or Etsy to order from the comfort of home. I still really enjoyed the place, the pricing is about the same as say a TJ Maxx or Marshalls except maybe certain tank tops that can be about a buck a piece with the clearance! I recommend this place for if you want to patiently thread through the racks, find something not from the ordinary, or something that was from the season before. read more

Don't waste your time. Honestly the girls at the counter are extremely rude. I had three boxes of clothing (lots of Victoria secret and high end labeled items). Everything was neatly organized and the girl made a mess out of everything (I.e., unfolded everything and tossed it to the other side of the counter). They ended up wanting 4 items out of the three boxes; but I rather donate than give them my clothing/bags. I truly don't understand how this place functions or makes money. They have HORRIBLE costumer service. I placed something on hold, was the first one on the list, and said I was going to be there before they closed at 8:30 pm. I got there around 8:05 pm. A lady then comes in 3 minutes before they close saying she had also put a hold on the shoes and after checking the list the girl at the counter says I was the first on hold and the lady was the second. Common sense says I should get the shoes since I called first to place them on hold and I got to the store first as well. But no, for some reason the girl at the register could not sell the shoes to any of us even though I had all the right to get them. I don't care about the shoes but it's the fact that for some reason it didn't matter that I was the first on hold and that I got there like 30 minutes before the other lady. This is one of the worst places I've been to. I came in with two large bags of clothes to give. Some items had tags and were relatively new (I purchased them this season). The items I brought that were not brand new, I had washed and made sure had no stains/tears. The staff went through the bags with over 60 pieces in less than 5 minutes and told me nothing is buyable. When looking through the store to see what they meant by great quality, there were many products that were worn out with holes and stains that were being sold for a very high price. They do not take quality brands/items and do not tell you why your clothes can't be purchased. read more

Awful Platos Closet. Been here over 50 times over the course of 5 years. Terrible customer service, poorly managed store, bad communication, and dirty clothes. If you're looking to buy/sell I recommend ThredUP - much better brands and quality of clothing to buy, and much better payout when selling. Service 1/5: the girls they hire are young, and have awful customer service. They complain about customers out in public, they yell across the store at each other, they don't bother to ask f you need help or a dressing room, they have literally pushed customers out of the way when they're re stacking shelves. They are incredibly rude - I've only ever had 2 occurrences in 5 years where the girls were helpful and nice. Clothes 1/5: it's all forever 21 and H+M brands that look like they weren't checked when purchased. I've come home with clothes that have stains, holes, tears...they need much better quality control here. The clothing is low quality and have so much wear it's not worth buying. Price 1/5: the prices are definitely discounted from mall prices, but for the quality of the clothes I'd rather buy new. It is NOT worth selling your clothes here. They constantly change which clothes they accept and barely give you any payout. I go back every couple months with the exact same bags of clothes and eventually they buy everything, even when they originally said the clothes weren't brands they carried or had too much wear. I highly recommend using ThredUP to sell your clothes - you order a clean out bag online, it ships to you and back to them for free, and you receive a much higher payoff. This place is bigger than i thought it would be. There are sale racks right in the front, and a good selsction of clothes in every category. They seem to stock up on items seasonally and move things around so you're not stuck sifting through a giant rack of shorts in the winter time. THe prices are fairly reasonable. I found a Nine West Dress brand new with tags priced at $12 and a Miley Cirus for Walmart dress priced the same. The stretch between the two is vast, so the pricing is off at times. Overall you will save some $$. Yes some of the stuff is not always in great condition, and i don't have an explination as to why it is picked but you just have to use your good judgement and decide for yourself. Brands i;ve seen: Forever 21 (LOTS...i mean LOTS), Kohls, Nine West, Target brands, Aeropostale, American eagle, J Crew, Free People ,Express,Steve Madden, etc. There are a always a lot of duds in between the gems as it goes with all thrifting, but i love that it's organized by size, and it makes it a lot easier. Keep in mind it's meant for a young crowd. So the sizes are limited and some of it is REALLY club-y. ON SELLING: I've been there 3 times to sell, and all three times they have consistantly picked very littlle of what i brought. I'm ok with that. I realize it's not a garage sale or GoodWill. The second time i went in i ended up selling them two items they rejected the first time around. Each time i go, it seems they buy a little more from me (not much) but more still. Here are some tips to consider when selling your clothes here 1) THE SEASONS! If you go to them in July with boots and parkas they will probably not take your stuff. Check the website, it'll say what they are currently looking for. Right now they want Jeans, Tanks, shorts, and tops. 2)Wash your clothes first, try to make sure they arent wrinkled, fold them neatly and present them in a way that's already attractive as is. This seems to make a difference for me as opposed to showing up with a garbage bag of balled up clothes. 3) Do a quick wipe down of any bags and shoes. You'd be surprised how much difference this makes. 4) Don't even bother with Work wear. They won't take it. It states that right on the website. Dress slacks and buttondowns will get turned away no matter what the quality. Blazers are really versitile though, so you may be able to unload them here. 5) Listen to what they have to say when they explain why they didn't choose your items. I was once told they were overstocked on dresses and gave me back all of them, even the ones with tags still on. I went back the next season, and most of them were accepted. I was told the shoes had "too much wear" so i didn't bother bringing them back a second time. This information can be helpful. 6) If you don't like what they've offered you, just say "No". You always have that option. 7) Don't take it personally. This is a job like any other. These people sort through hundereds of garments a day to choose what stays and what goes and they can't say yes to everybody. Depending on who you get, their style, what's already in stock, etc, you will get different results. read more

Came here on Monday to sell 3 pieces of clothing I never wore. They only take clothes that are in season so trying to sell a winter sweater in the summer won't work here. I brought in a kimono and short-sleeve shirt and they gave me $6.25 total, but they didn't take my graphic tee. The prices are really cheap and some of the products that are being sold still have the original brand's tag on there. Prices are really cheap but be mindful that they have a strict return policy. The clothes are organized really well by category so it's not difficult to find what you need. I've been here a number of times, and in the past my experiences have been around 3-star visits, but I stopped in on Saturday, and that will be the last time for a long time I shop here. In the past, I have found it to be a good, but not great, store. They have a huge selection, which is good, but as another person pointed out, there are visible stains on more than a few of their pieces. Not good. Mostly mid-range stuff, Abercrombie, J. Crew, Hollister and the like. The store is pretty messy, particularly the jewelry. For my birthday, I got a $100 gift card, and I was really excited to use it, so I stopped in this past Saturday. I also had one of their loyalty cards - the policy, as it is stated on the cards, is that you get one stamp for every $10 in purchases, and when you reach 20 stamps, you get 20% off your next purchase up to $100. My card had 15 stamps on it. I spent a lot of time there, and picked out about $200 of merchandise. When I got up to the register, I mentioned to the young lady that I had a gift card, and a loyalty card that only needed 5 more stamps for the 20% off. I asked her if it automatically would apply in one order, or if I could break up the order to fill my card and then use it in the next order. The cashier was new, so she deferred to another sales associate/floor manager, a young woman with bright bleach blonde hair and a nose ring in between her nostrils. I found her to be extremely rude and condescending, as she told me that I wouldn't be able to use my loyalty card AT ALL during this visit, that they only applied to your next visit. She then went on to explain to me that the loyalty cards were supposed to incentivize customers to come back to the store. I just about fell over. The problems here: 1) Not only did their loyalty card not explicitly state that the discount applies to the customer's next visit, it states clearly that it applies to their next PURCHASE. 2) Every single store that I have ever visited that offered similar loyalty programs has gone above and beyond to help their customers take advantage of discounts when they are in the store, with very little push to do so. 3) I had nearly $200 of merchandise this visit alone, and my loyalty card had clearly indicated that I had previously spent at least $150 at their store. Not an insubstantial amount of money for a business like this. 4) The real kicker here - the fact that the sales associate actually saw fit to try to explain customer loyalty programs to me, as if I were some type of imbecile. Positively incensed, I completed my transaction, and left the store with a completely full loyalty card and another loyalty card with 15 stamps on it. I won't be using those loyalty cards because of the absolutely horrible service I received and the sales associate's presumption that their customers are too dim to understand how customer loyalty programs work. read more

Before I leave my review let me state this, the bad reviews for this place are absolutely ridiculous. I love this store so much. Despite the way it looks from the outside, it's actually really big inside and packed full of clothing. They've got so many nice clothes, too. It sounds like a lot of catty instigators shop here, because I've never had any problem for the people that work here, they're all really nice girls. I cant even say that they're average nice people, they literally are stand-out cool people. And to be honest, I really have nothing bad to say about this store which is why it was kind of sad to see the lack of love for it. I was excited to hear Plato's Closet was coming to Jersey and after 2 months of trying to go I finally made it to Plato's Closet. If you're like me and not from the area this place is located on route 1S in the same complex as Shop Rite and is right next to Capital One. The store was a lot smaller than I expected and being a guy who frequently shops I knew there was a high probability that there wouldn't be a mens section. Luckily there was one. Upon walking in the store I was greeted by the worker at the register, which was different and nice. I proceeded to the mens section, which was all the way in the back of the store. I was quite surprised by the collection of clothes in this store, especially given the fact that many people complain about the store's strict buying policy. According to what I hear they buy "trendy" clothes that are less than a year old. The mens sections was made up of Old Navy, H&M, Hollister, American Eagle, GAP, Express and even LRG. Given the area I'm not surprised by the brands, but saying those clothes are trendy is a stretch. Jeans for guys range from $12 - $55 for designer jeans like Joe's or True Religion and shirts are anywhere from $6 - $10. Designer brands are rare here -- I only found 3 pair of designer jeans in the entire section. The mens section kind of looks like the clothes you would find in middle school or high school locker rooms. If you're over the age of 24 or 25 I doubt you will find your trip to this location to be worth your while (unless you're just looking for jeans). ALSO, while I'm familiar and accustomed to thrifting I've never known clothes to smell like they did at this place. Now don't get me wrong, it wasn't every piece, but it was on enough for me to notice (and almost get sick). Great finds at a cheap price. The deals are not so great as a seller. Appearance : this is a moderate size shop. For me, everything seemed cramped together and arranged by color. The sales/clearance are usually in the front (my fav place to go). Men section is in the back. Service: The service is pretty average when I come here. Audience: Even tho, it is mostly geared towards teenage (not a place to shop for business clothes). I (in my 20s) enjoy shopping here and I have seen people from different ages come here. Older population as well. If you are looking to sell.... they have certain requirements you have to meet. For example, the clothes need to be in style, clean, certain brands and not damage. At certain times of the year, they look for certain clothing such as boots in the winter and jeans in the fall. The wait is pretty long for them to look through your stuff. I recommend coming early in the morning to drop off your clothes. Then they will call you and to tell you which item they want to buy from you. The pay isnt great. For example, they gave me 5 dollars for each of my pants (orig price 44 - pretty good condition) and they sold it for 12. However, it is a great way to earn money and clean your closet if you meet their requirement. If you are looking to buy....they have some great deals. I mostly shop at the clearance section. I can get good quality stuff for a cheap price. (Urban outfitter shirt with tag for 10 dollars - missing a button tho, Kate spade Squared Away Pink for 3, Clavin Klein Full length down jacket for 12.50 (zipper needs repair)). However, it is hard to find. The store is pretty cramped. Sometime their H&M or forever 21 shirts are not worth the price. You def can find it for cheaper at the retail store. Was it worth it? I am not sure why there are so many low reviews on this place. I went this weekend with a box of men's clothes (teenage son) - mostly american eagle tops, levis jeans and some nike mixed in. I found the employees to be very professional. They worked efficiently when processing the sale and answered my questions thoroughly when asked what they look for when buying. They purchased the majority of the stuff I brought in and I left with nearly $90. I took some time to browse the store while waiting and found it to be very well organized, sorted by article and size. While I am certainly older than the market they sell to, I found several items that I could wear to work plus nice purses, accessories. I also saw numerous items my college aged daughter would wear. All in all - a very positive experience and I will continue to sell my teens' gently used articles here! read more

I'm making this review based on several past negative visits to the store, also I'm 28 and wear mostly F21/urban outfitters. I've never been more disrespected and rudely spoken to in my LIFE than at this store on multiple occasions. the young girls who work here are rude, disrespectful and have no rapport with customers nor do they care to, particularly the girl with bleach blonde hair and stretched ears. I've sold and shopped here about 5-6 times since the store opened. a lot of the clothing I've given them to review was either unworn/new with tags/or work once or twice and all recent within the last 2 years. They've passed on nearly all of the shoes/clothes I've brought in that were worn once or zero times because of visible "wear" meanwhile 90% of the shoes they have are scuffed or beat up pretty badly and the majority of their other clothing items have stains, pulls, or odors. it's actually quite amusing how the "buyers" Perform and describe your defunct clothing, This isn't manhattan, but the attitudes sure make you feel that way. I assume it depends who reviews the clothes, because I've brought in the same clothes on two visits and stuff they passed on the first time they took the second time. read more

TL;DR: you've read the reviews here. Don't go. Unless you want your day ruined. I'll split my review into two sections. First, my experience as a buyer and secondly, my experience as a seller. As a buyer, I was pleasantly surprised by the store because there was a wide range of items that were well organized according to size and color. I even found a genuine leather jacket (which a little scuffed), and was able to purchase it for $30 (with a discount). If you're looking for cheap clothing, I think this place is not half bad. NOW. The reason why I would never go back to this place is because of my experience as a seller. I walked into the store with a garbage bag full of clothes/ bags/ and shoes. After a half hour I was called back and told that 95% of my things were not acceptable for their store because it was not their "style". Now I understand that Plato's Closet is a trendy store; however, the lady working there was extremely condescending and looked like she did not want to be there. She barely looked over my things and said that I would be receiving $10 for a $180 brand name item that I brought in. I wasn't expecting to be leaving this place mad full of cash but I was still expecting a fair and pleasant exchange. Boy, was I wrong. I ended up taking back most of what they even said they would take because I was offended. So, if you want your day to be ruined then check out this Plato's Closet. These girls who inspect your clothes have no taste. They can't even dress, these workers aren't trendy... trust me. They supposedly take in "trendy clothes", but none of them know what style is! I've worked in retail, have friends in the fashion industry, & friends who are studying in fashion so I know what fashion and style is. I've tried to sell clothes I've worn once, at most twice from Urban Outfitters, Top Shop, Misguided, or Cotton On (EXPENSIVE & GOOD QUALITY CLOTHING) and they didn't take it! They have no stains and they aren't faded. They aren't worn out, or out of style... I simply wanted to sell these clothes because I just gained a few pounds and can't fit in them lol! It's like these girls don't know where fashionable people shop? They take clothes you see someone from Alabama wears... they suck. They're pretty rude here too. Rather just donate your clothes so you have receipts to put on your tax refunds! I had to update my review because I seen this one review give this place 5 stars when they simple DON'T deserve it. You can't be offended while selling clothes that you'll probably donate to charity anyways. It won't give much or sometimes at all, but it's worth a shot for a little extra money. There are two sides to this, the buyers and the sellers. As a seller, there's a lot to know before going in... everything is stated on the website and made clear at the front desk (you can also ask if you need clarification). They won't take anything stained or faded no matter how pretty or in style the item is. Makes sense, they're trying to sell good condition clothing. If you go in trying to act like all your clothing is blessed and a gift to the store (while trying to get cash for it), don't be too shocked or irrationally upset that they have the right to say no. I've seen people get from $2 to $100 depending on what stuff they bring in. Do some research, look at some Pinterest boards and figure out what the trends are, and maybe you'll know what to sell or bring in to get the most amount of money. As a buyer/shopper it's more fun. Looking around at first glance might not get you anything, but if you look a little, you'll find some really great things for cheap. I got a Lululemon scarf brand new w/tags for $5. That retails for about 46 I believe on the Lululemon site. I also got madewell faux fur vest and faux leather pants brand new w/tags for cheap-these things cost so much at the store. And they're great quality too. It's also nice because it's like you're shopping at ten stores combined into one, which means you can come out of the store having bought from many different brands at the same time. Be patient and be on the lookout for some really good deals. Remember, at the end of the day Plato's closet isn't a charity. It's a filter process so shoppers get to buy better things at better prices, while sellers get to make some money for the clothes that they treat well and are in current style. No one really wants to see/buy older things or out of style clothing and if you do, well there's always a Goodwill or some other thrift store that's more of a gamble. At Plato's, you can find a lot of really good deals for trendy things that you don't feel like spending full price for to try out from f21, h&m, other mall stores. As for the employees? I never had a problem and it's not a personal thing if they don't take your clothing. In fact, they go through so much clothing that some people haven't washed in years. It's expected that they might be more straight forward with what they want or don't want. read more

I have visited mostly all of the Plato's in NJ and this location is by far the best store out of all of them. Not only do they really take the time to look through your clothes whether they can take them in or not, but they know how to speak to their customers and take the time to explain to you as to why they could not make a purchase with you that day. They are not rude and dismissive like the Fairfield and Middletown locations. The Fairfield location only wants to take 1 bag and stops buying at 3pm. Why not put that on your website so sellers are not schlepping all of their items to the store FOR NOTHING!!!! The Middletown location "went through" my bags so fast and offered me $4. This was a total insult and the people at the front are so condescending when they speak to you. I go to the Edison store and they take basically my entire bag of items! Also, the manager Kim and store clerk Nicole have been a pleasure to work with every time I visit the Edison location. Don't waste your time going to the other stores! I brought in two bags of clothes in excellent condition with brands from Anthropologie and Banana Republic, among others, and they only took two Target brand items out of everything. The wait for them to go through the clothing was almost an hour and I only made $2.95 after all that trouble. I browsed the store a bit while I was waiting and didn't find anything worth the price. Most of their inventory looks like it came out of a 15 year old's closet. If you're an adult and/or looking for good quality brands, then I do not recommend this store. It's not worth the time. This is my second time stopping by this location and each time I never made it past the door. The first time a couple years ago I went and was rudely told I could only sell two bags a day. I said well what's the difference between four small bags and two large garbage bags full of clothes , they wouldn't answer but said only two bags, so I left. I gave them another try recently thinking that perhaps management changed and they would be more friendly , well they weren't I encountered the same nasty woman who I assume is the manager , I had driven about 25 minutes to get there only to be told they weren't buying until 4:30pm . There was no voicemail stating this before I showed up . I said well I drove a little distance to get here and the manager shrugged her shoulders and said 4:30 . I ended up driving to the Princeton location and received much better service and it was well worth the drive and I was able to sell 90% of my items ! read more
