Horrible customer service. Is there a 1/2 star? I work in the fashion industry in Manhattan (PR over 15 yrs - working with Brands from Chanel, Saint Laurent to Free People, UO and Zara, ). I know and understand trendy fashion. I work with young hip and fashionable men and women. This review is not from a fuddy duddy 40 year old lady. I was shopping in the grocery store next to Plato's closet. I decided to stop in. I happened to have a few items THAT BELONGED TO MY TEEN. Some with price tags still attached. The prices of the clothes have risen while the quality has dipped, but it's still an okay place to shop for affordable clothes. However, the customer services has gone from nonexistent to downright abysmal. During my most recent experience, the ladies working at the store were extremely rude. I was not allowed to use the fitting rooms 30 minutes before closing time, even though the signs clearly stated that fitting rooms closed 15 minutes before closing. I had 3 blouses that I wanted to try out but they were adamant. What made it worse was that when I asked them what rules they followed to decide when to close, the salesperson (lady with lilac blue hair) snapped that they decided to do so when they were "busy" and just walked away from me, went to her friend and started complaining about me. Clearly, it wasn't busy enough to stop them to partake in some petty juvenile rudeness. So, not only do they arbitrarily make up rules, they start berating customers openly. I mean, if working with customers is truly such a horrifying experience, perhaps they could just put up a huge neon sign on the door stating clearly that customers are a nuisance and are unwelcome. So for what it is, it serves a purpose. If you're looking for what essentially equates to throw away clothing then this is the place for you. I am spending a few unexpected days in New Jersey and underpacked. Drove by this place and figured I might be able to go in and pick up an extra shirt or two. Definitely the type of place where you have to be committed to sifting through the racks. If that's your thing then you may like this store. It's not my thing so maybe that is affecting my review. I'll give it two stars as opposed to one for that reason. I realized as I was walking out of the store that I actually have three bags filled with clothing that I'd like to get rid of in the trunk of my car. I walk back in the store to ask one of the sales girls what their system is. The girl I spoke with was extremely abrupt, not friendly at all and appeared to be inconvenienced by my questions which were pretty standard I felt. Is it consignment? Do you buy out right? What is the system you use to determine what you will pay for an item? Pretty standard questions that she seemed annoyed to answer. I asked her if they take Dolce and she turned her nose up and said no we're not interested in that here that's not what we're looking for. Ummmmm ok. General consensus, not a place to go if you want to buy really nice things... If you're looking for throwaway clothing then it suits that purpose. I won't be back. This place thrives on crap - what they accept and eventually sell. Brought higher end clothes and they wouldn't take them because there was no manager present to "authenticate" the items (They did take one pair of shoes and offered me $5). Called the Raritan location to ask if a manager was there to accept my shoes and was told yes. I drive 40 minutes only to be told that they are not accepting shoes! Totally unacceptable! And I had two small children in tow. Will never deal with this place again. You're better off buying at your local thrift store or selling on eBay. read more

Living in a suburban area, it's hard to find good consignment and thrift stores so when this Plato's Closet opened, I was excited. I've heard good things about Plato's Closet in the past and people often compared it to Buffalo Exchange & I've had good experiences with Buffalo Exchange. However, this Plato's Closet definitely did not meet my expectations I am fully aware that Plato's Closet is targeted towards teenagers, but being a teenager myself I feel as if a lot of the clothes here are tacky, and it's basically a lot of Forever 21 and people's recycled Abercrombie & Aeropostale clothes. There are occasionally some nicer brands, like Free People and Metro Park, but a majority of their clothes & clothing styles are similar clothes you would find at Macy's or TJ Maxx. I've been to thrift stores targeted at "young people" that have more "modern" clothes and I've never felt like the clothes those stores carried were tacky. Price wise, Plato's Closet is okay priced. I have been to cheaper & more expensive thrift stores before but most of their prices are tolerable. A dress that retails for $40 will probably cost around $20. My experience selling clothes to them was alright. I made $30, which wasn't bad, but I honestly expected to make more money considering I brought in two huge full bags of nice & unique clothing from pretty popular/good brands like Zara, Brandy Melville, Forever 21, etc. It really depends on who's the buyer at the time that you go there. The process itself was fairly simple, you just have to fill out a form and they make their decisions fairly quickly, around 20 minutes. People also complain about the smells of the store, but if you're walking to a store full of worn, old, clothes, what do you expect? I've also been in worse smelling thrift stores as well (aka Goodwill) Overall, this particular Plato's Closet isn't the best thrift store I've been to, but you can't expect much from a secondhand store targeted towards 'teens' in the middle of suburbia. The number one tip I can give to people who go into thrift stores is that you have to really dig to find something you like. However, if you're looking for a place to buy vintage styles or 'hip' clothing, this definitely isn't the place to go. read more

I can't imagine that this place will stay in business indefinitely. I first saw this store when I was at Shop Rite and thought that I had a good amount of clothes that I could sell. I went in and was told of their policy and what they were looking for. I went home, sorted through my clothes according to their specifications (some with tags) spent time re-laundering clothes, folded them neatly, and went into the store. They told me they were looking for T-shirts, hoodies, jeans, name brand trendy clothes, clothes no bigger than XL, clothes purchased within the past year and a half, casual wear, etc... Every piece of clothing I brought in was in pristine condition. The first thing I noticed about Plato's Closet was the musty smell. It was obvious that they buy unlaundered clothes and sweaters that look like they're 10 years old plus. I also saw stretched out shirts. The young girls behind the counter have a subjective opinion as to what's accepted and trendy and completely contradicts what's actually on the racks. They didn't accept one of my items. I left the store annoyed because I completely wasted my time. I was confused as well because they had items hanging on their racks similar to what I brought in. I'd much rather donate my clothes to a good cause such as Goodwill or Unique Thrift Store that benefits the Lupus Foundation than to this place that contradicts their business model of trying to be a trendy thrift store. If they want a successful model of a consignment type of store that's clean, organized, and has a beautiful selection of merchandise, Plato's Closet should check out Once Upon a Child in Edison -albeit they cater to a different demographic. read more

I would maybe try the shopping here based on the quality of items they took from me and the prices that I glimpsed but I won't sell my clothes here again. If you want your clothes to be accepted, they have to be clothes that are barely worn, or show practically no signs of wear, undamaged, recognizable brand (I would not bring luxury brand clothing here) and they must appeal to tween-20s (and the young at heart). This isn't hard for me to understand or comply with but the prices offered are so low, you might as well donate them. For a NWT $70 Bebe's maxi dress I was offered an exorbitant $12! Most of my items were taken but for barely worn and some totally new merchandise about $300 worth, I got ~$60. I much rather donate my clothes at that point, I'd just already waited that long and I was ready to part with the items so I did. It's great that they only accept items that are in really good condition but how about giving a fair price for them? With the prices they offer, you would only be able to replace probably one item from the 15 you sold. It's not profitable for you as the seller so you might as well rack up some good karma points and donate them. I will def just drop them at a Salvation Army or thrift shop or something charitable instead the next time I'm cleaning out my closet. Some cute clothes there. I was really ready to spend some money. I had a sleeping toddler with me and a blanket so I put him in a tiny shopping cart seat with a blanket. There's a no shopping cart rule and I had to wake him up, thus crying, having a fit. She may have been racist or changed the rules just on me. But it was very annoying. I've used Plato's closet in Waltham MA and they were helpful and nice. If I can give this store is zerostars I definitely would. They literally have shoes the falling apart close with no buttons smelly purses stained stuff and I brought Brand New clothing from express torrid forever 21 brand new heels watches and jewelry and they told me that it " mature" for the store or that it was stained, if you really look through their clothes you will see all the stain at disgusting holding that the store has. The workers have absolutely no sense on what is "trendy" Plus you have no right telling someone that their clothes on trying to eat because everyone has their own sense of style. I could tell that the one girl did not even open my large bag of jewelry when she said that she couldn't find anything to buy in there. Who do these people think they are?! AVOID AT ALL COSTS! I was forewarned by the reviews below but decided to give this place a try anyway--BAD IDEA. I walked in with 2 large bags of clothes the "buyer" informed me that they were a little busy and it would take 30-35 minutes to review my items. She asked me to fill out the top of a form and that they will put my name on the white board when they're done. I returned 65 minutes later... my name was not on the white board so I asked the buyer at the desk how long until they will be finished and she says "sorry another 15 minutes". OK fine I'll wait it out.. another 30 minutes goes by and she calls my name (seriously, an hour and a half later). She compliments my clothes and that they are nice and lightly worn but that they are only selecting 5 items 3 of which have tags and she says we can give you 12.50 is that OK? OK yeah sure give me the $12.50 you just cost me 3.5 hours of my time when you include the commute to this dump AND the worst part is all my neatly folded "lightly worn" clothes were now unfolded and balled up into 2 plastic bags that they didn't even fit and were protruding out so much that the strap of one of my bags broke before I could even get it into my car. TOTAL RIPOFF!!! I went in to sell some old clothes not expecting to sell much after fair warning from reviewers on yelp. When I was told by the store manager, MAGGIE, that only 4 tops were chosen to be bought out of the two bags of clothes brought, I was not surprised. I made a total of $14 and I took home the rest of my things. Later in the day, I went through my bags of clothes and I realized that A SWEATER WAS MISSING. So, I rushed back to the store thinking that it must have been misplaced when MAGGIE was sorting through my clothes. I reached the store about 30 mins before closing time and I spoke to BRIDGET. I was told that they try their hardest not to misplace items and that she would look in the back of the store for my SWEATER after they closed. 20 mins later, I got a call from BRIDGET telling me that my SWEATER WAS BOUGHT by the store. when I asked for a price breakdown, I was told that the sweater and two tops were bought for $2.80 each, one top for $3.50, and another top for $2.10. I wasn't about to argue over a few dollars but HONESTLY, I was not told by MAGGIE that my sweater was also bought and when she showed me the bin of 4 TOPS that the store had bought, my SWEATER WAS NOT in the bin. I DEFINITELY FEEL CHEATED and I hope to speak to JESSICA,the store owner, about the integrity of her employees. Shame on you girls. read more

The store is cool. I always wanted to check it out and I got a few nice shirts. I thought my visit was going well until I waited for my friend to finish checking out at the other register. She was offered a discount card where every $10 you spend, you get a stamp. Additionally, he offered her an extra stamp if she took her clothes out without a bag. I was extremely put off. I was not offered any of this by the girl who rang me up behind the register. Feeling uncomfortable asking if I could have a card and return my bag for an extra stamp, I just left. I shouldn't have to ask for something that the employee should be offering to every customer. Also, she was still watching us from behind the register. I'm sure she could hear the boy offer my friend the stamps, and she did not come up to offer me one as if she'd forgotten. The store should make sure every employee is offering these cards. It's unfair to put a customer in an uncomfortable situation. At least put a sign up so someone can ask about it when they aren't offered. Other than this issue, I thought the store was fine. I'll be back and definitely ask for a card before I've already finished my transaction if I'm not offered one. read more

The items being sold in this store are not in that great shape. I brought in brand new boots and shoes worn once by my daughter who always buys the latest fashions and they didn't take them due to "a little wear and tear". They were basically brand new! I literally saw handbags and clothing that were tattered. I don't know what criteria they use but it isn't right. A lady who came in after me who I heard the cashier say"you've been with us so long...". Maybe they have a select group they buy from? If you are shopping there it is great, but if you are selling clothes it is terrible. I had a bunch of brand new clothes and they did not accept 1 thing. I had jeans only worn 2 times not taken a Ralph Lauren shirt that was never worn not accepted and a Columbia wicking shirt worn 4 times not accepted. When I went back for the clothes they said they were out of style. Blue jeans never go out of style, a button down Ralph Lauren never goes out of style. Very pitiful. read more

Heard about this place from commercials, thought I might as well give it a try just to see if I could make some extra cash. Upon walking in I was eagerly greeted by the employees at the front counter , they were very kind and gave me a thorough explanation of there process since this was my first time there ! As I walked around the store I saw some very cute stuff for almost unbelievable prices. It took about 25 minutes for the them to look over my stuff and they did end up taking a couple items, however they did provide with me an explanation on why they didnt take the rest and I also got a better understanding of what they took just from browsing the store. All in all I will definitely to be back to do some more selling and some more shopping ! :) read more

I have been to several Plato's Closet's between New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware and the Edison store is simply the best I have seen. I was taking a trip to visit some family in the area and figured I would stop and see what this location had to offer. This store is extremely clean and does not have the odor that most used clothing stores have. I was pleasantly greeted by a sales associate upon entering the front of the store and was later asked if I needed any additional help with anything. To those who claim that this store is "picky" and are complaining about their "schpeal" of what type of clothing they take, please remember that it is a business. It benefits those of us who like to shop at the store because it allows us a bigger and better selection of clothing and better quality. Other stores I have been to in PA and DE have been unorganized and messy, dirty, and mainly had basic clothing items such as t-shirts, jeans, and sweatsuits. This store offers a wide variety of name brand clothes and shoes at great prices and I don't feel like I have the heeby-jeeby's when I take something home that's been worn previously. I believe this store benefits from being closer to New York because people with more "fashionable" clothing are able to clean out their closets after each season and we are able to buy these gently used items while they're still in style. Aside from clothing, they also have a great selection of purses/wallets and jewelry. I did not bring any clothes in to sell during my visit, but I did purchase a light fall H&M jacket for $12, a gold necklace for $5, and a pearl bracelet with a coral colored rose in the center for $2. I will definitely be visiting this store again when I'm in the area to make some purchases and now that I understand their criteria for the clothing they accept, I will bring some items with me to sell. I went there not long ago, As I waited for them to go thru what I bought in, I walked around the store. When they were done they stated that they couldn't take any of my items because they were outdated. I was shocked and mostly because as I walked around I took notice that some of the shoes and boots I was looking at were damaged and most of the clothes weren't anything to write home about. My clothes were clean and all purchased within 2 years. One item was never worn and still had it's tags. I don't purchase junk and most of my clothes are very expensive and totally dated. It was nice to see lots of jeans in my size but the prices weren't anything to talk about. The prices on a lot of those items I would never buy in a store like that. Why buy at that price when you can get it new for a few bucks more?? Either way their clothes were nothing to write home about. After leaving the store I went else where. The other place took everything I brought in except one thing I decided to sell on ebay and as of now.. the bid is up to $68.00 and that's for one item. And what's even better... while waiting for this place to hand me my cash, there were 2 people waiting to buy what I cashed it. I made $175. I will never shop at Plato's again, but I sure will visit the high end shop that I went to. At least there they know what sells and wat doesn't. read more

Don't waste your time. It was a 3 hour ordeal , by the time I drove there , waited over an hour then drove home it just was not worth it. Lugged a garbage bag and bin of shoes and they took about 4 items. They claim they want forever 21 and mandees , but did not take my express , MK, guess and items from Bloomingdales. I don't get it . All in all , if u live close and have a few items to bring it might be worth it . The people that work there are unfriendly and miserable. I had 3 big bags of clothes, from pretty "in style" clothing; Urban outfitters, forever 21, H&M, Zara, typical casual clothing. I arrive there, and they say it's going to take 2 hours to assess my items, so i left, and they said I would have to go back there to see how much money they'd give me, which i thought was pretty sketchy, why couldn't they say it over the phone? They were extremely snobby when handling the used clothes I tried to sell back, they picked out the clothes they were interested in and proceeded to tell me to go home and wash them and bring them back before they can purchase it. These clothes were brand new with the tag still on, I never wore them. They told me it had an "odor." I think it's disgusting they take the used clothes and slap tags on them, all while treating you like something they just stepped on. I'd rather donate my clothes then deal with the people working there, which I did. If they don't change their nasty attitude they won't be open for long. I should have listened to all of the reviews. This place is terrible. I took three bags of clothing. Most of it was not used at all. They said some was stained (I reviewed my bags and I only saw two things with small stains) and that they didn't sell the other items well. Fair enough. They took 4 items. She wrote down scarves and shirts and gave me $9.35. I honestly was so stunned I just took it and left. When I got home I saw that they also took a pair of shorts (BRAND NEW) but removed the belt and left it in the bag. They also took a handbag but didn't write that down or tell me they were "purchasing". I felt like I was robbed. The girls working there were nice enough but clearly this place is extremely dishonest. It would be much better to donate your items to goodwill or the salvation army than try to sell here. I'm extremely disappointed and disgusted with Plato's closet. I will not be returning here or suggest it to anyone else. read more

I can't say enough bad stuff about this place. I will be brief and to the point. The sales people are rude, unhelpful and condescending pretty much no people skills. The clothing choices are very young and cheap h&m, forever21 a few random designer jeans mixed in but usually in the smallest sizes. The shoes are completely unimpressive and usually gross. I've never had any luck here but, maybe if you're feeling adventurous and your waist size is 24 you can find something but I have not. read more

Seller beware! Seems to base their decisions on how the person selling the clothes looks like to them before they even see the clothes... I was welcomed with a speech emphasizing that they only accept clothes worn by girls between 17-26... Brought a bag full of almost new (J crew, banana republic, etc) clothes (had to emphasize that it was my daughter's) and they took only 1 item with a bid for less than $4 !!! I had a pretty positive experience here. Everyone was very polite and treated me with respect, unlike what most on here have been saying. They are very picky with their items and only took two pieces out of the entire bag I brought but they have the right to be picky because they need to sell everything they collect.
