This Platos Closet is the best one Ive been to in all of California. I frequently thrift from all the way to Sacramento from LA. I have never experienced a more heartwarming store. I really appreciate the hospitality of Anya. Brynne was unbelievably helpful with the dressing rooms. George was folding clothes and greeting each person that came in. I even applied to work there I enjoyed the atmosphere so much. Pretty difficult place to sell clothes if you ask me. Thi was my 2nd time giving it a shot to see if they'd take some items. Brought in a few large bags of clothing which included some pants, coats, shirts, shoes etc. Only reason I considered trying again was because a lot of the items were name brand like Levi and had a few pairs of Nike Dunks I've never worn. I dropped off the bags and they said the wait would be around 1.5 hours which is fine so I figured I browse a little bit to see what kind of items they're taking and stuff they're selling on the floor. To be honest, the Men's section of the store is very goodwill-like in the sense that you'll find a few good items but I mean a lot of the bulk of their clothing is just random crap that I'm not completely sure why they're taking and reselling. Some of the photos I've included are some items that I'm unsure why they'd take and try and resell if the stores advertised to "trends" and "Young Adult Style". Especially since the store is such a hard store to sell clothing to. After running some errands I received a text that my offer was ready and based on how long it took I was pretty sure I was going to walk out with the same amount of clothing I walked in with. Sure enough that was the case and they took some items I figured I'd have to take to goodwill and have me $27 which is fine. Their reasoning for not taking any pants was they are only looking for denim jeans and not colored denim...okay that's fine. They then said they aren't taking a lot of the items because they are overstocked on certain clothing. Hmmm I'm pretty sure the reason they're overstocked is because they're taking a lot of sub par mens clothing that are difficult to move off the floor! Guys I'm sorry I know this is a second hand clothing store, but at a certain point you have to consider quality over quantity and I'm sure you'd make a hell of a lot more money. Just based on what I was seeing on the floor it's no different than walking into the savers less than 2 miles away and finding the same stuff. I'd even say I've had 1000x more luck at savers than I have Plato's. If you're a person looking to sell clothing I'd prepare yourself for a little disappointment considering the effort it takes to organize and transport the clothing. The store has a lot of potential to be a solid second hand store but I truly believe they've got to broaden their audience because the stuff they're buying and selling feel a little lost and out of touch of so called "trends". This will be the last time trying to sell clothing to this place, it's more worth the time and effort to find the nearest buffalo exchange or crossroads if you're looking to sell clothes. read more

Unless it's a fast food establishment, I usually cringe when I visit a business with one or two stars on Yelp. And considering this is a business that specializes in second hand apparel, I had to give it some thought if this place was any good. Keep in mind that I love thrifting; especially when you can find bargains on so many good finds. This takes me to the Vacaville "Plato's Closet" that has been opened since mid-2021. For those of you that don't know, Plato's Closet is a franchise owned by Winmark Corporation which also owns "Once Upon A Child" and "Play It Again Sports". Usually, their stores are spread out and only in very select areas across the country. This was my 2nd time visiting a Plato's Closet as there is one only 20 minutes from me in Roseville, CA. This location is in a busy outdoor shopping center directly at Allison Dr. and Nut Tree Pkwy. During my visit which was the afternoon of Saturday 6/17/2023 at around 1:30pm, I scored some really amazing finds. First and foremost, they were offering 70% off on clearance items. I found an awesome Aeropostale t-shirt for under $1, Kirkland brand swim trunks for under $2 (both of which were clearance items), and Nike Air Max shoes for an unbelievable $25. Furthermore, this place has a ton of name brand apparel at discounts that are much lower than a Goodwill and Eco Thrift. One thing I did want to point out is that customer service wasn't the best. However in this situation it was okay with me as the three female employees looked young (18-20 years old) Usually I enjoy browsing by myself without being asked if I need help. When I did want to use the fitting room, the young woman didn't mind assisting me in letting me in. All in all, the Vacaville "Plato's Closet" was a decent thrift store with surprisingly unbeatable prices. And it is tucked in between Ross and Burlington so if you're on a mission for some new and perhaps, second hand clothes like you'll find here, you just may score some deal. Would not recommend for selling or buying. I brought in 1 bag only containing pieces that they were buying at that moment. They took 3 items for $5. I wasn't expecting much since I just wanted to get rid of stuff. What was really upsetting is that they just throw your clothes back in your bag. And they didn't even go through everything. I noticed some stuff was untouched at the bottom of my bag. When browsing around the prices were too much. $7 for a pilled top is not worth it. I know they have to make a profit but they either need to lower their prices (not the location's fault) or only take in cleaner clothes. read more

DO NOT COME HERE! If you want to sell any of your clothes. I brought 7 bags full of different clothes and from that I got $17 and it looked like they didn't even bother to look through any of the rest of the bags. I waited 2 hours exactly which it did say but I had a lot of stuff with tags on them and an expensive dress that wasn't even considered. A lot of the bags were ripped at this point so I asked the girl who was working there if I could get some help she said "we can't leave the store" other customers that were shopping looked over and it was very rude and humiliating. I had a great time shopping at Plato's closet! I am a size 8-10 and there were a lot of clothes that were size 0-6 that I couldn't wear, but I still enjoyed looking at them. I would say it wasn't the cleanest or most organized thrift store ever. The shoes were clearly dirty and some of the clothes had an odd smell. There were also earrings and little stuffed animals. The changing room system was informal and you do have to pay attention as the employees may rap on the door and ask if you're still in there. I saw clothes from expensive labels (urban outfitters, princess Polly) going for 7-20 dollars which I would say is excellent value. read more

I do not expect high about this store but I respect them as I have visited San Mateo Location few times.. I hit this store for a possible deal... I went to the clothes area, nothing to see but look like rugs, not to insult them but they should choose what they get from consignors because they are losing money on this.. Shoes are A-OK though I won't buy used shoes for obvious reasons, then the bags and wallets.. They should have an authenticator to make sure what they're selling is authentic.. I have seen few that are really FAKE and when I asked them they said they have an authenticator to authenticate the products. I guess you have to fire your authenticator.. One bag is misleading at the same time even if you do not work for a fashion industry (I do), you should know what Michael Kors bag is... Take a look at the picture and tell me if this is Michael Kors... Obviously it is an Amazon product and even a grade schooler knows if the bag is an MK or not..Do not blame authenticators because if your authenticator is wrong then as a person who works for Fashion Retail should know the difference of auth and non-auth and the brands of each bag.. Staff knows how to talk gossip about customers, consignors or bring their personal issues at work, rather than learning brand names of what they're selling... In San Mateo location, you can see all kinds of Branded Luxury and Designer Items from bags, wallets, shoes and clothes... They know their brands but this Vac location takes and accepts even Goodwill brands or non-branded things... As far as I am concerned Plato's has its policy and rule to follow on what to sell, that's why they're strict when it comes to consignment... Now, I know why I see people just taking their closet and bringing it over to Plato's anything, just anything, to save them from decluttering fees.. Plato's , you should know better than this, hire people with knowledge on Brands.. I used to go to a Plato's in San Jose as it was a staple for me in college to shop for some cheap trendy clothes, but this location in VV has gone downhill and their clothes have become more expensive. Their jeans and pants can range from $15-25, which is kind of expensive for second hand clothes. I've even seen some Shein and Fashion Nova pieces that were $15+! You're better off buying new clothes from Ross in terms of the value sometimes, but they might have some hidden items that are worth. One thing I'll stress on is the customer service here is utter shit. The staff needs to have a better system for the fitting rooms and should be trained for better customer service. One of the staff members opened on the door on me while I was changing and she didn't even apologize. She did knock, but I couldn't tell if she was knocking on the fitting room next to me. Later on I overheard them laughing and gossiping about what happened- suuuper unprofessional! This Plato's closet hires typical gossipy high school girls, and from previous reviews there's complaints about them being super rude and not displaying any customer service whatsoever. Honestly I should have taken my business elsewhere but my boyfriend really wanted to purchase some clothes. Also, whenever I come here I've always noticed that when I walk in here I'm never welcomed by the staff, but they always welcome other customers who walk in. I have not been on the selling/dropping off items side of the Plato's Closet customer experience, so I can't really speak on that. As a shopping customer though, I had a pretty good experience here. It definitely is a store that caters to a younger generation but you can also find some really great, versatile and on trend pieces here! I found an awesome suede bag, 2 skirts an awesome pair of sneakers and a T-shirt for the husband and the pricing was fair as well. The items are all in great condition, unlike Savers or Goodwill ( which can also be awesome places to find great pieces) where many of the items are damaged, smelly or just very worn for not that much less! Oh, and for those who have made comments about the staff, they were perfectly nice when I had questions but they were very busy because there's a lot of inventory to deal with. It's not a department store experience so please don't expect that. I think if you want second hand pieces that are still stylish and in good to great condition but with a but more of a boutique feel, this is a great place to shop! I was in the dressing room and over heard him talking about picking clothes from a seller. He said "It's not my fault people have bad clothes." He was talking to a co worker about how a customer was upset they only bought two things out of the things she brought in. It sounded like she possibly brought in two big totes of clothes. I'm surprised this place has such low reviews. I was thrilled to find out that a Plato's Closet opened up in Vacaville. I haven't really been to the area in a long time and I was told that Plato's opened up two years ago. Plato's has a lot of secondhand clothing, shoes and accessories for a reasonable price. I say reasonable, because even though they are used items, it's nice to go to Plato's sometimes instead of a regular thrift store since these items have already been sorted through and you'll be looking at clothes and brands that are currently popular and in style. It saves time instead of going to a thrift store and maybe being lucky with one or two items, here you'll find racks of clothes organized by style and size. I walked out with a few Lululemon work out tanks and also a couple of other activewear items. I wish they had a Plato's Closet in Walnut Creek! I'd for sure be a regular there! read more

Decent place to shop. Not good for selling. Customer service is trash with grumpy attitudes, which is enough to make me deny any cute items that there could be. As a shopper it be cheap but somethings are questionable when it reaches over $15 (it's used..and the items they accept aren't that great) I gave this place 2 shots to try and sell, with items that are pretty similar to the better items they have (H&M, high waisted jeans, simple crop tops, Old Navy) and they couldn't accept it. It's a bit strange as to why. I feel like it can really depend on the workers grumpiness or how they view you, if I'm being honest. I don't feel a lot of integrity in the process. Just bringing your items they like them to be folded in a bag or a plastic tub just don't throw them in there it makes them easier to organize so that they can sort through them and get you top dollar. read more

This is the second time i have tried to sell clothes here and wont ever do it again. Total waste of time. First time i took several large bags of clothing in right before school...alot of demin shorts and pants, tops sweaters etc. Good quality items many only worn once or twice. I have a 30 year retail background and know my brands and quality fairly well. Most of my items were from Macys, Nordstroms and a couple from Old Navy and Kohls. They only took maybe 3-4 items out of 4 large bags. Swore i would never go back. Fast forward about a yesr and a half and decided to give it a try again today. Packed up a very large bag and a half....same thing....folded neatly mostly new or worn only a couple times. Again nice quality from nicer stores. Since my experience the first time the year before I double checked on the website to make sure again the things they said they took and there was no listing anywhere of things they were not taking. However when i turned in my bags to sell they mentioned "oh we are not taking this and this, etc and heres a list that is posted of what we arent taking where you check in. Needless to say I'm thinking great probably wont take a bunch of my stuff again. Sure enough when i went back to pick up my items....they only took 4 pieces and paid me a little over $5.00. I very nicely told the girl i realised it wasnt her fault but never again would i ever waste my time and bring anything into Platos again. AND this time i mean it!!!. Not only did they not take over 95% of what i brought in again, but they just threw all my items all wadded up and stuffed them back into my bags....ironically they want you to bring in your items all neat and clean tho. I was pissed when i saw that. I went home and double checked their site again. It states"WE BUY ALL SEASONS ALL YEAR LONG!!!" Funny they werent taking any long sleeves, sweaters, sweatshirts outerwear etc. Dont bother people. They take very little and only give you pennies for little they do take. Took my daughter since she's starting to fit in size small and we are trying to be more aware of our environmental impact. We were thrilled with we found! Lots of cute shirts that look new, the price was great (no more than $7 for name brand clothes) and everything was organized. The staff was so friendly. I was surprised to read the low reviews. This place is horrible, total scam. Everything is so overpriced they had almost $10 hair clips in the front of the store that you can get for $5 off amazon for a 6-8 pack. I love this place! I come here weekly (oops!$) it's super affordable & the merchandise is super cute and up to date! I have taken in many items as they are a consignment shop & they are very fair. I came to sell and wasn't greeted when I walked in. I take customer service and manners very seriously as I have owned businesses in the past. Employees walked past to put things away and roll racks around me without saying "excuse me" which I think is extremely rude. I frequent the Roseville location and never have issues. They always treat everyone with respect and kindness. Employees continued to talk to each other while I checked out which is a big no no for me because the focus should be on the customers. I'm not sure if it's the "Gen Z" employees or not but it's unacceptable IMO. I'd also like to mention the older woman working here who I suspect is the manager and her attitude SUCKS! So sad about this experience as I follow both locations on Instagram, but their service at the Vacaville location needs to improve. I won't be visiting this location again. read more

I checked in to sell clothes and was told the wait would be 45-55 minutes. Not a problem. I browsed the store, went next door, and a few other things. The time surpassed and I was understanding as the time was an estimate. After watching my bag move from one side of the room to the other, and waiting 1.5 hours, I decided to finally inquire as the wait was becoming ridiculous. I was very nice and the representative was, as well, and told me she was waiting for her coworker to input all the items and then it would be done. I said thanks and continued waiting. It has been now 2 hours because the coworker who inputs the items is also helping in store customers, which extends my wait that much more. Very poor system as two people review items for sale & only one inputs the items AND checks people out. Very very very irritated with my experience. read more

I appreciate the sustainability factor in that you can buy gently used clothes for a really good price, often way better than a sale or clearance price at any retail store. But they definitely stiff you when you sell things. I understand making a profit to keep the store running, but it's honestly just not worth it. I get that they are only buying on trend things but a lot of pieces in the store definitely looked like the early 2000-2010 clothing trend. Some of them looked like they were washed so much that they started pilling. As I was shopping around, I was so sure that my stuff were way more on trend than what they had on the floor and that I would get a good offer but I was so very wrong. Mind you, I brought only pieces that still had tags, or looked brand new and most of them were from brands listed on their website. I'm not sure what else determines what is sellable or not at that point. Bottom line, I will always encourage to buy second hand. Better for environment and wallet. But do not sell here. If you do, just don't expect much of anything in return and you won't be disappointed. If your goal is to make some fast/extra cash, you might get just enough to pay for lunch.
