Although the food is good the service is horrible. It takes any where from 15 to 20 minutes even get water, then once you get your drink it takes God knows how long to place your order and once it's delivered they never come back to your table to check up on you! I've been here twice. Probably never again. The look and feel of this place is cute and trendy. The interior is lovely. The menu has a Gastro pub/high-end vibe. They have a full bar. The problem? It is as if all of the waiters are former and/or fired fast-food chain workers. I mean seriously, amongst the worst service I've had of any restaurant ever. But it doesn't feel like a lack of organization or management. It feels like what you get when you hire staff; half of whom might be on probation or in rehab. So I drive by this place a lot and the "BEST BURGER IN PASADENA" banner always catches my eye...I guess that's the point, huh? So I finally had to stop in and find out for myself. Came here last week with a few friends. One of my friends had warned me about the bad service reviews on Yelp...we didn't have a single problem. They had more than half of the restaurant full and I didn't notice anybody waiting around for service at all. The waitress and the guy at the front came over a few times to make sure we had everything we needed. My wife and I split the garden salad, the Mozzarella burger and an order of sweet potato fries. I have to say that the burger was one of the best I've had. I honestly haven't tried every burger in Pasadena but I'd vote for the banner to stay. I usually can't eat a whole order of sweet potato fries because after a while the taste becomes "too much" but these fries were awesome. I think I might have eaten more than my half of them, really good stuff! And the salad was really good too. I'd have to say that Plate 38 backed up it's banner. I'll definitely be back! read more

Had a groupon and decided to stop by. This is the fastest turnaround for a groupon I think I've ever bought. They give you like 2 months to use it rather than the usual 6 months to a year. Anyways, stopped by for an early lunch. It was basically empty except I saw 3 others picking up to go. I also ordered at the counter and opted to get it to go. Food came out really fast for what I ordered. I'm choosing to believe they cooked it to order but probably not since I think I only waited 5 minutes. But then again, it wasn't very busy. I got the chicken sandwich and the sexy mac. They didn't have that weird gratuity charge on my bill but the guy taking my order seemed unfamiliar with the groupon so maybe I just lucked out. Anyways it set me back $8 (total of $18 minus the $10 groupon (paid $5 for)). I totally think the meal is worth $13 not the $18. The mac and cheese was so tiny. It's definitely a side portion but not worth the $7 they are charging for it. It's loaded though with cheese and cream and sauce and ham and onions. I did like it though. Lots of sauce actually since they didn't place it in my to go bag flat so the mac and cheese was turned on its side and all the sauce leaked out of the container and created a big mess for when I got home. And no I don't think it was my fault in that they tried to force the two containers to sit at the bottom of the bag when they don't fit. I just placed it in my car and drove home. I guess I should've checked it before driving off. As far as the sandwich, the thing as a whole was good. Really big. And it's a whole chicken breast with cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, guacamole, and bacon. My only gripe is that the ciabatta type bread is kinda tough so it was hard to bite through. That was $9.25 - maybe that was worth its price. But yeah, I glad I tried this place but it's a bit too far and a bit too pricey to come back regularly. I have only been to Plate 38 once before for a baby shower. Friends decided to eat there since we were in the area and know the owner. The waitress, Alana, was absolutely horrible! I'm not sure how she still has a job there. I was a waitress for years so I know how busy it can get, especially during breakfast hours. Maybe she's new but she could benefit from more training on customer service and multi tasking. However the place wasn't busy and she just seemed lost, wandering aimlessly. Drinks and food were ordered. Surprisingly the food came out before the drinks did. I asked why the drinks hadn't come out and the runner said he would check on them...FYI our table heard the waitress ask to have the drinks made right before our food came out. The fill in manager came to the table attempting to stick up for his ditzy waitress. The gentleman let us know the actual manager was taking a few days off and he was filling in as manager, and that he has worked there for 7 years, not that we even cared about that, but he felt he needed to let us know. After the nasty looks and smirks from Alana and another waitress working there, the bill was paid and we left. As we left they said in a very sarcastic way "see you next time!!" I was SHOCKED, what are you in 5th grade??? There's a reason why I never went there in the first place and after this today, will definitely NEVER go there again!!! Stopped in for small plates and cocktails. Took a seat at the bar and the friendly staff was very helpful. The bartender described some of the specialities and described the special for the day which included custom hollow ice cubes he had created himself which he then filled with smoke and a cherry which he used as the basis to begin a beautiful cocktail. He clearly took a lot of pride in his creation and in the work he put into this masterpiece. And, it was as delicious as it was unique. If they have something smoke infused you should try it and watch as he puts it all together. What a show. And the small plates were wonderful as was the bread pudding. Best of all was the bartender though who was the perfect balance of friendly, professional, and proud of what he was doing. We loved his enthusiasm. read more

I got a burger here. For around $10, you waste a good chunk of change on something that can only wish to ever be like Father's Office. Sure, the burger was a nice size and presented quite well on a piece of was paper resembling newspaper in a rough and rustic aluminum plate--kinda cool. And, parking was a piece of cake. But, the burger itself was gross! I bit in to my chili burger and found the meat to be undercooked per my request and the bacon extremely hard and impossible to chew. And, then I found a piece of plastic in my burger... WTF? But, that's not where it all ended. Surprise, surprise, undercooked ground beef and plastic in one's burger leads to illness--I got sick as a dog after this, getting dizzy and nauseous and focusing all I could on just driving home safely on a stomach soon to be fully emptied. Dear owner, I have been a patron of your establishment since 2010. I am never spending another red cent after this experience. Your snotty passive-aggressive egomaniacal unhappy unsmiling uncaring unfriendly "mixologist" and "hostess" near closing Friday March 31 were the last straw. I intended to meet a friend there for cocktails. The bitter coldness I received from these two after a long day were enough for me to text my friend and say "forget it - I'm out of here". I had my drink and snack and left post haste. When a patron walks into your establishment wanting to unwind for the day with some cocktails and bites, yes, we EXPECT excellent service. I've honestly received better service and respect in a Drive-Thru. There is NO excuse for this. It seems I have never left happy and my bill is always outrageous for what I feel is underwhelming food disguised as...fine dining? I have purposefully spaced my visits out over the years because each one gets worse than the previous. I'm an optimist and hope things would improve but apparently everyone else is also a glutton for your punishment. Not to mention your parking lot attendant - hostile to the point of threatening to kill a friend for parking? Police called. Plate 38 - you sit in a strip mall shared with a Dickey's Barbecue, a Subway subs and a dry cleaners. Where do you think you are honey, Bel-Air? My family had a nice, pleasant, well-prepared meal here. Good service, too. But we really paid too much for what we got. For breakfast, I had a mushroom omelet and coffee; my wife and son each had pancakes with berries. She had a latte; he had juice. We all liked our food. But it wasn't worth over $50 (over $60 with tip). I'm not saying that we'll run to IHOP with open arms, but there are neighborhood eateries out there with equally good food and service whose prices seem more reasonable. (Foxy's in Glendale, and Zabie's in Santa Monica, for instance.) read more

I have only tried a couple of their brunch options. I usually come by after church since it's so convenient and usually never a wait. The parking is a little bit small considering that there are a lot of other stores in the plaza, but there is street parking if you can't find any spots. The hostess is very quick to have you seated which is nice and will give you the option on where to sit if there's a lot of open spots. I sat outside and it was actually really nice. They have heaters and they close the ?drape so the cold wind doesn't come in. I ordered the crab cake benedict and I will probably continue to do so every time I come back. I also tried the salmon benedict, but the pieces of salmon were small and awkward - it didn't even fit underneath the poached egg and i had to cut into it separately. I also tried the smoked salmon and potato rosti. The potato pancake was cooked to a crisp and I liked that texture. Overall it was delicious, but I'll definitely be sticking to my crab cakes. They also have unlimited mimosas, but I haven't tried that. Coffee comes in a big mug. Staff is friendly. Service was a little bit slow today but I think because our waitress had a lot of tables to attend to. read more

I ordered mozarella burger (big,juicy, and yummy) and garlic herb fries(delicious) for 1 PM. I arrived at Plate 38 at 1:10 pm and my order was hot, well packaged just waiting for my arrival. The best thing on the menu is the kid's chicken fingers meal. If you have ever had "pollo campero" that's what the spices taste like. Crispy tempura batter with shoe string fries. They have good mac and cheese, the noodles are a bit too cooked for my taste, but it's has a complex cheese flavor. It's baked mac and cheese with bread crumbs on top. It adds a nice contrast in texture. I had the smoked mozzarella burger. It tastes like a pizza burger. (close your eyes, and it has a pizza flavor to it). The patty is too thick so it fits into the bun, I wish the bun was bigger to make the patty thinner... I know #firstworldproblems, but I can't dislodge my jaw like a snake. This is a wonderful, quaint hidden gem...perfect for breakfast (I have not yet tried their lunch menu). Service is always friendly, the food is delicious, and you can sit outside on a nice day. I personally love the omelette's, which have fresh tasty ingredients. The white mushroom and truffle is my favorite, with bacon, chives and truffle cheese. I've only been here for brunch, but I would be there for brunch everyday if I could. The blueberry ricotta pancakes are amazingly fluffy, light and delicious. If you look around at the other tables, there's almost always someone eating the breakfast burrito. It's well balanced and comes with guacamole, sour cream and a yummy roasted salsa. I was very shocked that it caught fire the following day i was there :( But, here is my review - I had the Garlic Marinated Skirt Steak dish ... I liked it, but it didn't wow me. I love garlic, and this dish, eh, i couldn't really taste it, since it's "Garlic Marinated." I was a tiny bit disappointed that it lacked it advertised ingredient. But, I'm willing to go back and give it another try. Along with this entree, i had a SUPER SUPER delicious Peche Lambic Beer ... SO FREAKEN delicious! My daughter had a hamburger, big fat solid beef patty on a smooth top bun, she loved it. I had mixed greens salad, very good and different. Not your ordinary restaurant salad, very good. We went for brunch on a Sunday to use a recent Groupon we bought. After waiting in a long line (there was only one order-taker), we ordered a breakfast burrito, omelet and two lattes. This place simply does not have enough staff to serve a full restaurant. There was only one person taking orders, one waitress and one person filling drinks. The food was tasty, but for some reason the omelet came with a side salad (random) that had no dressing. I think if they add 2 more wait staff and switch potatoes for salads it might work. read more

I came here like many other people because of the Groupon. When I walked in, I overheard the server answering a customer's question on the phone about the Groupon too, so I guess lots of people bought it. I ordered the chicken sandwich and it was quite tasty. It included some of my favorite ingredients--grilled chicken breast, thick-cut bacon, avocado, garlic aioli, and ciabatta bread. It was de-lish! The only complaint I had is that the ciabatta bread was a bit too crisp/toasted. I would have preferred something softer like focaccia. The sandwich was a la carte, but came with a large dill pickle spear. Note: the Groupon does not cover tax or tip, so be sure to use the full value. My Groupon was $10 and my sandwich was only $9.25, so I lost 75 cents in value. I should have purchased a drink or a side. Service was quick and friendly. I'd like to come back and try other things on the menu. Hopefully, they offer a Groupon again. Regular prices are a bit high. read more

No parking, burgers were under cooked (it would have been okay if they used better beef), we ate half our burger before we got our fries (couple next to us didn't get their fries either), place was TOTALLY understaffed.
