I have been coming here with my family since I was a child. This review is long overdue but I absolutely love this bakery. The staff is amazing. The custard cups are the best I have ever had and trust me, I have had a lot. They are so kind and always serve fresh baked goods and if you call ahead, they will tell you when the items are literally coming fresh out of the oven (not that anything sits long because of the crowd). I love that they hire teens and give them an opportunity to get some work experience in a fun environment. I'm kind of ranting here but I'm saying all this to say this is really the best bakery. And this review may seem too good to be true but trust me, I do not know anyone that works here nor was I asked to write this. This place is so good it makes me mad we only spent 15 dollars for half a pound of rugula, a whole sourdough loaf, two donuts, one plain croissant and one chocolate croissant- all of which were incredible. My husband and I ate half a loaf of bread in one day plus all the other treats we got. They have everything. We already can't wait to go back. read more

I stopped in for a sandwich and soon found out it was a Portuguese bakery! The Boar's Head signage is what drew me but I suppose my internal Portuguese navigation pulled me there like magnetic north. My Cracked Pepper Turkey was abundant in their fresh, crusty and tasty Multigrain Roll. With a smidge of Hellman's mayo (yes, you can easily tell Hellman's) the sandwich was great. A side of a half dozen of Portugal's finest pastry, Pastel de Nata, for a later dessert and a good day it is. read more

Went in to get my mother in law a birthday cake - the line to order moves quickly. We ordered the tres leches cake and asked for them to write happy birthday. We waited 10 minutes to get the cake back, since there were other folks getting their cakes as well. I also ordered 6 custard tarts and they were delicious. I agree with others that this is one of the best places to get tarts! read more

Generally, we always have a great experience in the bakery. It is very crowded. What I don't like is that people crowd the cases and it's hard for you to see what's fresh or not we have gotten a few items that were stale. Custard should always be a light color yellow so now we are smart and we look at the custard if it is a dark yellow we know it's been sitting for more than a day or so so just be wise and make sure that you look to see what is fresh? We also tried an apple turnover and it was burned on the outside should've known by the dark brown color I would say 90% of the time you get good stuff by 10% of the time you have to be careful and wise when you're shopping I suggest they do not leave anything with custard out for more than a day or so. Always ask if they were made that morning or the day before.. Definitely give it a try. I'm sure you can order fresh cakes. I do like the lobster tails with custard. They are always delightful. read more

Julie and her team created a beautiful enchanting forest cake for our daughter's 7th birthday. They went above and beyond our expectations. Everything about the cake was amazing...from the taste to the flower details, perfect placements of the butterflies and bugs up to the color and sparkles. Note I didn't order from Pinho's in person and was given the baked goods today as a gift so I can't comment on their service or business. However, the gifts were purchased today and I consumed them soon after they were given. What was I given? PASTEL DE NATAS (Portuguese egg tart) and a FRUIT TART. What I liked about their pastel de nata is the flaky crust. Other than that the custard was not smooth and has a slightly curdled texture. Almost as thick as pudding. There wasn't much of an eggy and memorable flavor and is medium sweet to my Asian taste buds. With the fruit tart the crust has the texture and taste of shortbread cookies. The cream under the fruits is a waxy whipped cream. Topped with a variety of fruits fresh and canned: pineapple (fresh and sour), strawberries (fresh), blueberries (fresh), kiwi (fresh), green granny smith apples (fresh), peaches (canned) and pears (canned). I was pleasantly surprised by the green apples. Otherwise, both are okay but I wouldn't spend money to get them myself. 3 stars. UPDATE: After eating another pastel de nata, I realized the custard reminds me of the custard found in Western-influenced iterations of the Chinese custard bun found in bakeries of Chinese supermarkets. read more

Went to Renee's Fashions and the owner suggested we stop by next door to Pinho's and boy am I glad we did. Besides the freshest honey turkey sandwich on the hard on the outside, softest in the middle hero (my fave!) their pastries did not miss!! The fruit tarts are some of the best I've had, the yellow cake slice with chocolate was excellent, and I picked up bread pudding for my Mother. Also got some quiche and empanadas. Not only was the food good, they were friendly and helpful and it was good to see a diverse group of young staff. Good enough to cross the Goethals!!! Oh...prices VERY reasonable! read more

Ordered a birthday cake, they had a dead roach squished on the box-- then, coincidentally, a roach comes out of the box as well. Previous times when I go, it's unsanitary and there's constantly flies within the establishment-- and hair on the specific cupcakes I'd get, caramel chocolate cupcakes. They went down so far, it's so filthy... I wish I was lying, I can't make this stuff up, it's ridiculous. They should close down, it's horrendous. read more

After ordering a bunch of baked goods including the famous custard cups the person who helped me neglected to include the custard cups when I left. Although I was not charged for them it was the main reason why I went there and after being an hours drive away, Julie save the day by delivering the baked goods and then some to my mother in law. If you're looking for a bakery with a deli that sells Boar's Head products within arm's reach, then Pinho's Bakery is your place! Perhaps the best thing about this bakery is the fact that there is a great selection of different cakes, pastries, cupcakes, and breads to choose from. Weekends appear to be particularly busy, but that's good news for those expecting freshly baked goodies. "Cigars" (1x Raspberry, 1x Chocolate, and 1x Apricot): These are light, sweet, crispy, nutty, and delicious. Each one is well balanced in flavor. You could taste each of the ingredients without one overpowering another. My least favorite, however, is the raspberry. I found it overly tart and excessively sweet to my liking. In order of preference, I would go for the chocolate, apricot, then the raspberry. Cream Horn: I finally found a place that makes these exactly how I like them. The dough is very light and crispy, while the cream is quite rich and flavorful. The dusting of powdered sugar adds another hint of sweetness. I definitely enjoyed these with tea. Cheese Horseshoe: These giant pastries are $10 each and filled with a sweet and creamy cheese filling. The dough is probably like a light croissant, if that makes sense. I would definitely order this again. Note: Try to eat it within two days or it'll be dry and a bit chewy. Pasteis de Nata: Pinho's has been making them since 1977, so they must be doing something right. The custard's sweetness is just right and not overly sweet like other places. However, I'm a bit bummed that it doesn't have burnt edges, but that's a non-issue. Unfortunately, I am not a fan of the Tiramisu. My family likes it, but I'd give it a 2/5. It's basically two inches of whipped cream topping, while the cake itself is barely half an inch. The Chocolate Mousse Tart is delicious, particularly the mousse, but the ganache was too sweet for me. There are also these small rectangle chocolate bars that have nuts on the top. I have no clue what it's called (no label), but it has a soft chocolate filling and a light biscuit base. Overall, I'll come back to try more of what they offer. read more

Came here because a friend recommended it. Ordered half a dozen custard cups, one elephant ear,one cookie and one cannoli. The custard cups were ok nothing I would go out of my way for. Cookie was so dry and elephant ear is suppose to taste flaky and sugary but instead it was stale and had cinnamon on it. My husband said the shell fell apart and they had pre filled it because parts of it were soggy..he said it doesn't hold a candle to Bovella's cannolis. Please keep in mind they have a $10 cc minimum. I didn't know until I went to pay for my half order of custard cups and then Kept having to add items to make the minimum. I was so disappointed with this bakery as it has good reviews on yelp. I am in the minority but I feel the pastries are overpriced and don't warrant the cost..$3.50 for a cupcake is too much. read more

Great bakery with very friendly staff. I only had their custards and they're amazing! It's such a different taste and texture than Asian custards. The shop itself is small and has a very local feel to it. I came here on Thanksgiving day and the line was out the door. I waited about 30ish minutes until I got my custards but it was worth it! I ordered my gender reveal cake from Pinho's Bakery and they did an amazing job! I told them I wanted blue and pink stars for our "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" with gold accents and they hit it out of the park. I'm actually the friend that Alyssa M. below was talking about. We found this gem after simply google mapping and yelping the best cafe closest to the church we attended one Sunday. I had never had Portuguese baked goods before, so Alyssa was beyond excited for me to try some. The atmosphere of this place is incredible. It's full of people, always. The counter people aren't all rude, but they do want you to order quickly (which can be difficult when there is SO many options in front of you). However, there are always a lot of local families and friends eating here, so it's quite a comfortable place to come. Like Alyssa said, the prices were really cheap and the food was GREAT so I actually made this place a Sunday tradition during my time in NJ. Croissant Ham Sandwich: You can pretty much order any kind of sandwich you want here. There is a full deli with every kind of fresh bread, meat, cheese, and fixings you could want. I chose a croissant, which was slightly sweet, and topped it with some savory ham, Muenster cheese and some veggies. It was the perfect sandwich, light and delicious because of its good quality ingredients. Chocolate Covered Cannoli: This was REALLY sweet... but I really enjoyed it. Cannoli's aren't my favorite because I'm not a fan of the crunchy texture of the shell. However, because this cannoli was chocolate covered, the shell was softer to chew into. Custard Cups: These are the typical Portuguese dessert this place specializes in. They were perfectly proportioned in size and sweetness. Overall, this was my favorite restaurant in NJ. I can't believe I've been living so close to this bakery for years and only just discovered it. Hooray for deli/ bakery combos. Pinho's closes at 6pm on Sundays. The crowd scurrying toward its doors at 5:55pm when I was leaving is a testament to the fact that it has made its way into the weekend tradition of many families... and now mine. I can personally vouch for the raspberry cigars, chocolate meringue cookies, and whole wheat rolls. The raspberry cigar was flaky and generously filled. The chocolate meringue was fudgey (might be making up a word, but you get me) and had walnut pieces, and the rolls were deliciously rustic with grain pieces. I will definitely be back to try some of the deli items. There is casual seating inside, and outdoor bistro seating on the brick patio. Definitely a future spot for lunches out, or for those times you need to camp out and work in a coffee shop. Service is quick with lots of people behind the counter on the weekend. They recommend coming early in the morning for the best selection of buns before they sell out. read more

GO HERE TO ORDER YOUR CUSTOM CAKES! I ordered a custom tiered sweet 16 cake for ~300 people 8 years ago, with figurines to mimic the 16 couples that were a part of the sweet 16 Court. When ordering the cake, a Pinho's employee sat down with us, showed us all our options for the cake, fillings, and icing, and allowed us to taste test. We were so extremely satisfied with the customer service and the end-product of the cake. Fast forward to today.. came in on a busy Sunday morning to order custom diabetic-friendly birthday cupcakes for my fathers birthday and a custom full sheet cake for a graduation party. It is amazing that they offer sugar-free and diabetic-friendly sweets! We ended up ordering 2 dozen white cupcakes topped with strawberries and happy birthday signs (all sugar-free) for only $25! Then, for the custom full sheet cake (3 layers of cake), we chose a combination of yellow/chocolate cake (2 layers of chocolate and 1 layer of yellow), one half of the sheet cake with raspberry mousse and chocolate mousse fillings (1 layer of each filling), one half of the sheet cake with fresh strawberries and cannoli cream (2 layers of the filling), and whipped cream as the icing. The employee was extremely patient with us when we took our time to decide what we wanted, and she even provided us with samples of the cakes and fillings so that we could make our decision! She thoroughly went over our order and was very helpful about figuring out decorations for the top of the cake. I went to a Birthday Party Sunday 12/30/18. The cake was too pretty to cut, but when it was sliced the filling was strawberry and bananas and pineapple. The cake was so moist I could have licked the plate, but someone would have saw me OMG!!! It was sooooo delicious- taste like some more, for real, for real!!! I cannot wait for my event.
