Food came relatively quickly and I scooped it up and found a table. They have plastic ware at the front counter. Napkin dispensers were at the tables themselves. For $6 and some change, cash only, no tax, I got a fresh and filling meal. I ordered the pork chop bento. The pork was lightly fried and not greasy. I didn't expect to get something fried so I scavenged for the meat inside. It came with rice and assorted vegetables. It was more than enough. Super solid spot for Chinese breakfast. Their Chinese cruller (youtiao) are freshly fried and delicious. They also have a good rendition of salty soft tofu (which is actually pretty hard to find). The rice roll (fantuan) with purple rice was also pretty legit, nicely packed with pork floss, fried cruller and pickled greens. Sometimes in other subpar versions the rice can end up too dry but rice in the version here was perfect. The only let down was their kaofu (had this pungent flavor I think was from the bamboo?) but I guess I should have known not to get a Shanghainese dish from a Chinese breakfast / Taiwanese spot. Stick to the breakfast (and Taiwanese?) items and I think you'll be a happy camper. read more

it can be overwhelming deciding where to eat in the food court of Great Wall Supermarket -- esp. during peak lunch time, everyone around you is speaking Chinese and all the menu boards are mostly in Chinese too. So I judge by who has the longest lines or what looks good. Last time I went to Best BBQ and I was pretty happy -- today I noticed a lot of people eating what looked like Beef Noodle Soup, incl. a mother with two small children -- all of them eating this same soup. I asked her what it was -- she said what sounded like "hen sliced soup." It looked like beef not "hen" and I asked her again "is that beef noodle soup?". She said again "hen sliced soup". I figure (wrongly it turns out) she was telling me the Chinese name for Beef Noodle Soup so next I asked where she got it -- she told me the Taiwanese place and pointed to the 2nd food stall. She sold me when she said they get this all the time when they come here. So I went to "Ping's Place" and asked for the "hen sliced soup" in broken English so that it sounded like what I had heard earlier. The owner/cashier knew what I was talking about :) But just to be sure, I asked for the most popular soup -- she said "Original Beef Noodle Soup with hand-sliced noodles." i chuckled to myself :) The beef noodle soup is $6.50 -- and $1 more for hand-sliced noodles on the weekends & holidays. The broth was very good - tasted like pho broth. Beef slices were thick and very tender. Soup also had bok choy and chopped onions. The "lost in translation" noodles were found at the bottom of the bowl ... and clearly hand-sliced. Roughly cut, uneven and thick. Went for lunch today and I got what most reviews are hailing: the pork chop rice platter. Since it was my lunch break, I asked for my meal to go. Waited less than 10 minutes for it and out the door I went with my not-so-light styrofoam box. Curiosity was teasing me to rip open the white "Thank you" bag but luckily, I exhibited self-restraint. By the time I arrived at my desk, the intoxicating aroma emitting from the enclosed package had nearly taken me out. But boy-oh-boy, did control and patience ever pay me! When I unveiled the pork chop, it proudly rested on the bed of rice with pickled vegetables, a hard-boiled egg, soft diced tofu, and a meat sauce liberally applied on the rice. I thought to myself, "This is absolutely too much for one sitting. I'll save half for dinner." As I dug in, said restraint earlier demonstrated slowly floated out the window. Each bite called for another one. Well, folks, I downed the entire box in about 20 minutes. I am simultaneously proud and ashamed. Now I am plotting the next time I can eat here. Maybe my expectations were too high? This is solid food court food at insanely reasonable prices, but not much more to me. Be aware this spot is cash only, but the total for all three of our dishes was just over $15, so you'll probably have enough cash on hand. The beef noodle soup was my favorite thing, and a giant bowl is easily enough for two people to share. It's chock full of hand cut noodles, super tender beef, and some veggies in a uniquely fragrant broth. The pork chop plate and the salt and the salt and pepper chicken nuggets were merely "okay." Not bad by any means, but not something that I would likely order again, unless I was looking for cheap eats inside the super market. The portion sizes are insanely large - the pork chop platter is a giant serving of rice with sauce, veggies, a tea egg, and a giant pounded thin pork chop that is breaded and fried. However, the flavors all tasted the same and a little overpowering to me. Maybe their oil was "off" that day? I was definitely let down on that dish. It was not crispy and did not have the layers as you bite in and tear it. Also, I was let down by the wonton soup. Picked up food a couple of times...tried the pork chop rice, beef noodle soup, green onion pancake, pogo chicken...everything I've had was pretty good. I really like the bentos - you pick the protein and it comes with a couple of sides (usually a spicy tofu and a vegetable and a tea egg). Portions are generous and everything is reasonably priced. It can be a bit slow though, especially on the weekends. Overall, I really love the food here and highly recommend it. Ping's Place (大华小吃) is located inside of Great Wall supermarket in Duluth, just around the corner from the large Duluth Sweet Hut Branch. Plenty of parking, although weekends and evenings are very busy, you'll find yourself walking a bit further if you come during these times. This small, unassuming food stall inside of the supermarket puts out some of my favorite Taiwanese/Chinese food in Atlanta. It's great for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and takeout and definitely worth the trip out to Duluth for some tasty, cheap, authentic food. My top 3 picks for breakfast are the Chinese cruller (油条) and soy milk (豆浆), the purple rice roll (紫色糯米团), and the chives & pork fried dumpling/potstickers (韭菜锅贴). The Chinese cruller is huge and should always be ordered with soy milk. The soy milk is definitely quality and can be ordered sweet or salty. Both flavors of soy milk are very good, so order whichever sounds best to you! The purple rice roll comes filled with a deep fried Chinese cruller and can be ordered sweet or savory. They put sugar inside of the sweet one and pork sung inside of the savory one. Both are great, although I tend to prefer the sweet one. It's a great on the go breakfast that is very cheap! My other breakfast choice is the chives & pork fried dumpling. You get about 12-14 in one order and the sauce that it comes with is great. It's like a mix of vinegar and soy sauce that goes really well with the dumplings. I have not had the other flavors of fried dumplings, but I am confident that they would be very good! My top 3 picks for lunch are the fried chicken nugget bento (咸酥鸡饭), the fried chicken nugget noodles with clear, chewy noodles (咸酥鸡面，细粉), and the fried pork noodle (猪肉炒面). The fried chicken nugget meal is an awesome deal that usually lasts me two meals. It comes with fried chicken nuggets, rice, braised beef (卤肉), tofu, tomato, fried egg, pickled veggies, and bok choy. The fried chicken nuggets are leagues beyond typical freezer aisle nuggets. They are super crispy, juicy, and perfectly seasoned with a mix of salt and pepper. There is a reason that these nuggets appear in two of my top lunch picks, and that is because they are a MUST GET. The fried chicken nugget noodles come with fried chicken nuggets on one plate and a bowl of clear soup with chewy clear noodles, bok choy, and cilantro. The crispy, very flavorful chicken nuggets go very well with the relatively bland soup. Finally, if you want to try something that isn't chicken nugget-centric, I recommend trying the fried pork noodle. It is a fried vermicelli noodle dish with pork, egg, and pickled veggies. A great, very filling dish that can definitely last two meals. One of the biggest things that really makes me love this place is that every time I order here, the service is great, the food is always high quality and also very consistently the same dish. I tried the cruller with soy milk for the first time. It's similar to a churro without the sugar sprinkled on it. Not bad, not great..a little bland. We also had Wonton in chili sauce and fried rice with Taiwanese chicken. These dishes were a little more tasty but still seemed bland to me. I'm not sure if they were close to authentic Taiwanese food...but I think I'd prefer to eat at Hometaste or Ming's BBQ regardless. It seems like most of the customers speak Chinese which is why the lady at the counter called out the orders in Chinese. I've eaten this many times, and I enjoy it fully while eating, but then I go through the next few hours feeling really thirsty. Too much sodium in the broth? I don't drink too much of it...but yeah I keep coming back for it because its like a drug. Try the hand cut noodle variation as well! What deserves great attention is there shao bing (baked crusty pastry) and xian dou jiang (salty soymilk). Its delicious, and hits the spot. I also recommend the dish where they put some beef onion and cilantro in the pastry, and serve it with porridge. Ultimate comfort food! Lu rou fan...eh, I had it once. After staring at the minimal menu for a good 5 minutes, we decided on two bowls of beef noodle soup. In retrospect, we should have ordered 1 bowl, because those things are massive. Alright, to start, this is an unprepossessing place. Don't feel like you need to remotely dress up - it's a little food stall off to the side of the Great Wall (GW) supermarket and seating is shared between the 5 stalls. Come as you are. I chose Ping's due to their menu and the featured items; the menu is a little tough to parse if you don't read Chinese, but rest assured there is some excellent food here. I got the beef noodle soup with the knife shaved noodles and it was quite delicious - noodles had a nice texture and the beef was well cooked, not too tough and still had flavor. Yeah, when I took a bite of food from Ping's Place I just let out a ermahgerd with a mouth full of food. Kungfu and I were in Duluth, and I wanted some beef noodle soup, and he wanted pork chops. I had a limited amount of time before I had to go home to take care of something, so I searched on Yelp for a Taiwanese joint. Ping's Place came up with wonderful reviews, so we had to give this place a try. I got the beef noodle soup and Kungfu got his pork chop plate on. The beef noodle soup was awesome. The soup was rich in flavor and the beef was cooked to perfection. It was falling off and just melting in my mouth. Plenty of suan cai, bok choy, and cilantro to fulfill every bite of the soup. I got really full halfway through though, and I always finish my noodles. I pretty much demolished the soup though. The pork chop dish came with mixed veggies, suan cai, meat sauce, and stir fried bok choy with two huge pork chops. The pork chops were crispy and wasn't seasoned too heavily. As a testament to how good their food was, he somehow managed to finish his entire dish and finished my noodles. After we were done, I ordered a beef roll and chicken nuggets to go. You know when something's really good when you take a bite after its gone cold and its still amazing. That's what happened with my beef roll. There were large pieces of shredded beef, diced scallions, and just goodness in between the onion cakes. Get this to go, and have some the next day for lunch! I heated up the chicken nuggets in my toaster oven as I had forgot to air the box out. It wasn't my favorite out of all the things we got, but it was pretty good. A bit too much five spice for me but overall, pretty darn tasty. I wished there were some fried basil pieces on top. I have been to Ping's place several times now, food here is very consistent for a food court restaurant. And prices are in cheaper side as well. So yesterday when we didn't want to spend too much on brunch, we decided to go to Ping's place again. It's the second stall on the left when you enter the GW and it's usually the most crowded among other restaurants in food court. It was the case yesterday as well. We ordered the following, 1) Salt & Pepper chicken 2) Stinky tofu 3) Soy milk with salt 4) Chinese donut. 5) Cold noodles with shredded chicken and peanut sauce. (Whole order costed us $22 before any tips) Salt & pepper came in a bowl and it's a big portion size and it was much saltier for my preference. You are probably thinking, "isn't salt & pepper chicken supposed to be salty? it's in the name". But no, it was way too saltier than the same dish at anywhere else(boba mocha, quicklys, sweethut). As for stinky tofu, lets just say I'm still getting used to smell and taste of stinky tofu in general. Having that said, I have slowly graduated from wrinkling the nose at first smell to actually eating a piece of it without complaining. And my boyfriend loved it - he tells me that stinky tofu at Ping's place is very tasty and good. I have had sweet soymilk here before(and it's tasty) but for the first time I tried the taiwanese style soymilk with salt. At first when my boyfriend suggested it, I was skeptical but I like it! It's different and more like a soup than milk. It is served with chinese donut pieces on top. Also the chinese donut we ordered (Churro like fried stuff sans sugar) was tasty but nothing much to write about. The best we have had that day at Ping's was the cold noodles. It's served with shredded chicken and peanut sauce on side. You basically pour the sauce on the noodles according to your preference(I poured the whole thing on noodles) and stir it up. It had thinly sliced cabbage, which was very crunch and adds to the texture. And scallions imparts flavor to the noodle with every bite. It's a must try here. They do have pictures though, and rough English Translations. This place is very Chinese. They speak Chinese to you. Their English is okay. You should come here if you know exactly what you're getting. Overall, their food is bland. Their congee tasted like bland, soggy oatmeal. I thought the beef roll that came with it would add some flavor. Nope, that thing was devoid of any flavor. Their House Specialty Rice Platter comes with rice, some mapo tofu, some pork bits, and frozen vegetables. It was bland. Everything was bland. I was confused why it was so bland. The owners of Ping's place used to be the original owners of this little fast food joint called Ocean's Garden in the foodcourt of Chinatown on Buford. The owners had some health problems, so he sold Ocean's Garden to new owners....the food at Ocean's Garden is no longer good. However, there's good news!! The original owners of Ocean's Garden has opened a new fast food joint in the foodcourt of the Great Wall Supermarket on pleasant hill road! The menu is the same and the food is as great as it was before. When the original owners of Ocean's Garden closed, my husband and I looked everywhere in Atlanta for another taiwanese place. We tried Bento Cafe after reading the reviews, which is a decent attempt at taiwanese food, but not comparable to Ping's Place. We've also tried Chef Liu's, and the dishes there are not comparable to Ping's Place either. Ping's place makes you think you're on the streets of Taiwan! The food is really good. Here are some of our favorites.....some are written in pingying because I don't know the English names for these dishes. 1. Pork Chop and Rice - their pork chop and rice is amazing. Just like how my aunts make it back home. It comes on a large plate with a soy sauce egg, pickeled vegetables, big plate of white rice with meat sauce drizzled on top, and a perfectly breaded and seasoned pork chop on top. This is my favorite dish. I have not been able to find another pork chop and rice dish that is even comparable to this one in Atlanta. 2. Sta Chang Mien - I think the best way to describe this dish is to compare it to Taiwanese spaghetti with bolognese. It has noodles (no soup), meat sauce, lots of different vegetables (cucumbers, soybeans, cilantro, carrots, etc.). It comes in a big bowl, and I would recommend asking for hot sauce. You mix everything up and the noodles are so good. This is my husband's favorite dish. 3. Fan Tuan - the best way to describe this is a taiwanese burrito. It can be served with white or purple rice. I usually get it with purple rice. Inside it has a crispy churro like crispy dough with dried pork. You can also ask them to add cilantro....its really good. A traditional taiwanese breakfast dish. 4. Won Ton Soup - usually I don't order Won Ton Soups, but Ping's Place had changed my mind about Won Ton Soups. Their soup is so good, so clear and the broth is so tasty. They have a lot of other good dishes that I've tried before, but since it was just my husband and I today, we could only manage to finish these 4 dishes with leftovers! This place is so good and so cheap. We ate for less than $20 dollars. Just don't forget to bring Cash, they only accept cash here. This place has legitimately good Chinese noodles and soups. This might actually be the ONLY Chinese restaurant I could recommend without any apprehension in the greater Atlanta area. I came here a few weeks ago for lunch with a friend. I had the pigs feet noodle soup and my friend had the pork chop noodle soup. We both had it with the knife shaved noodles (dao xiao mian), which were almost as good as when I've had it in Beijing. The broth was nice and flavorful and there were 4-5 pigs feet in there. That's a whole pig's worth of feet! It ran a cheap $7 for a bowl of noodles, and the bowls were huge. The service is a little on the slow side (we waited for 15 minutes for a pearl milk tea) and it can be a little hard to find a table on the weekend when families are grocery shopping, but I would definitely come back here while shopping at Great Wall again. read more

Located in the food court of some shabby looking Chinese supermarket called Great Wall, Ping's Place doesn't exactly have the recipe for a five star Chinese meal. I'm picky with my Chinese food, the unnaturally orange gloop you find with your sesame chicken? Yeah, that's not Chinese. This, however, I would happily say is the "food of my people." And judging by the amount of Chinese people that frequent this particular little kiosk, I'd say that some would agree. Tip on finding good authentic Chinese food: follow the Chinese people. I am a noodle monster, a noodle addict not seeking to go to rehab anytime soon (as should most asian people be). Aside from from the stereotype that we all eat rice, I would gander to say it's fair that we slurp down (literally slurp) just as much noodles. So then, you should know that when I have a craving for beef noodle soup I usually come here. They have two different kinds of noodles, "dao xiao" (or knife cut) and "lamian" (hand pulled). Both are fine, both are amazing. I've had both and it just depends on how thick and the chewiness of the noodles. Daoxiao tends to be really firm and chewy, while lamian is softer and less tough on the teeth. Honestly, I haven't had much else here. They have stinky tofu, which if it's your cup of tea, you should at least try. It's a Chinese delicacy though every Chinese person will complain about how it's not stinky enough. Their salt and pepper chicken is just as good and so is their soy milk. It's real soy milk, by the way, not that crap you get in vanilla and chocolate flavors. Get it, try it. If you don't like it you can go back to your printing press, flavored up soy milk but if you do like it... you'll never be able to drink the other stuff again. For a small kiosk, they do with what they can. This is why I gave it five stars. I can't be picky here and there about whether their broth isn't up to par, neither noodles aren't hand made, or their tofu doesn't smell enough like roadkill. For their size, they do a phenomenal job. Moreover, they're serving food for people who, sometimes, miss that type of food. The cook of Ping's Place used to have a stall in the Chinatown food court in Chamblee (aka the dilapidated & sad Chinatown). We took my father-in-law (who's from California where there's a plethora of good Chinese eateries) there for brunch and he actually went up to compliment the chef. I'm glad that the cook is now here and doing well in the Great Wall food court (my favorite Asian food court in Atlanta now), and still serving some of my old favorites. Looking forward to bringing my father-in-law here when he next comes to Atlanta. Beef noodle soups- delicious! I think the best Taiwanese beef noodle soup in Atlanta. There's several "varieties" but really it's just the type of meat that is different, the soup base is all the same. Pogo chicken- fried chicken nuggets, Chinese style. This comes on a plate with rice, meat sauce, pickled veggies, some cooked bok choy, and a soy sauce egg. It's a lot of food, and delicious! I love the texture and flavor of the chicken, it's done just right. Much better (and cheaper) than Bento's Chicken Drum or other. Stinky tofu!!- I've been craving good stinky tofu for a while now... you can't really find good stinky tofu in Atlanta. But this version (at least what I got when I was last there), was the bomb! Almost as good as what I'm used to in Shanghai :) [come on, Shanghai's one of the foodiest cities in the world. Can't expect Atlanta to be exactly the same] Hot and sour Da Lu Mein (soup noodle)- meh. This was the only dish that wasn't too exciting. Thinking back, I should've ordered the regular Da Lu Mein instead of the hot & sour version. They make it hot and sour by just dumping in some generic hot sauce, which is not very tasty. Cash only, like most of the other stalls in the food court. I'll be back here again when I'm in the Pleasant Hill/Duluth area. I admit this may be a slightly biased review as I have not had decent Chinese food in so long! I have no idea what my dish is called in English but it consists of knife cut noodles in beef soup. Praise Allah for these fine noodles. Thick, stubby, and a slight chewiness is my favorite noodle consistency, and they nailed it! I never drink the soup of non-homemade Asian soups because I do not want to die from sodium overdose, but this particular bowl of noodles made it especially difficult. It was a great portion for however much my friend paid. Maybe this place tasted better since it was free (el oh el), but no worries, the price was definitely more on the affordable side. The owner is missing out on some marketing opportunities! I need to tell him/her to claim this business! I came here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon on my own after finding it on Yelp. The place was fairly busy with a couple of larger groups of patrons. The restaurant is tastefully decorated and clean. The Taiwanese dishes I ordered (beef noodle soup and pork leg) were tasty and authentic. Since I was by myself, I didn't eat much of the pork leg and focused on the beef noodles. The manager came by and asked if the pork leg tasted ok and offered to take it off the bill. I said it was fine. I mentioned the bubble tea I ordered was too sweet and she gladly made me a new one. Overall, very good service, good food, and good value. Definitely would come again when I move to Atlanta. read more

Ive been here twice so I think I can write a review now lol. First time I went here it wasn't as good (but i went on a random weekday night and it wasn't busy at all lol, more like crickets). Im not gonna bother with reviewing the first time I went lol. Second time I went here it tasted much better (weekend and its packed). The ingredients were fresher, the taste was better, food was hotter, etc. I guess deciding when to eat here makes a difference. But both times I got #1 (beef noodles) and asked for it spicy. The noodles seem homemade and chewy, veggies are fresh, soup is okay, meat is tender and deep flavor. The price for the size is a bang for your buck for sure! My only problem, its freakin salty! I know most chinese food is salty for me but usually I get a big cup of water but here they only give you a small water cup -_-. next time I come I will buy or bring a big bottle of water lol. Overall, I learned to come here on the weekend when it taste better, fresher, etc. Only thing is its super salty for me so I need to bring or buy a big bottle of water next time I eat here. I was super duper excited to find out there's another Taiwanese place to try out in town. Although I grocery shopped at the Great Wall supermarket gazillion times, I just never thought to check out their food court. So as soon as I read reviews from this place, I immediately jumped into my car and drove 40 minutes to come here.... and I'm not totally impressed. I was excited to see their menu.. hello! Stinky tofu! Yes, it may be gross to many of you, but for a Taiwanese girl who grew up craving this stuff because it's just not that available in this part of the US (Bento had it for awhile as their special, and it was pretty good), it's like finding treasure. I ordered it, and omg, what a disappointment. The tofu pieces were too crispy and the flavor was just not there. It only slightly smells stinky, but when you bite into it, it's just so bland! On to the good... their pork chop plate is huge and pretty good for the most part. Big chop paired with some greens, a side (it changes), egg, and meat sauce on rice, it's big enough for 2.. unless you're my husband who eats a big dinner portion and can finish it all. It's good enough for him, but honestly, I've had it way better. On the weekends, they have knife-cut noodle soup specials, where the noodle is chewy and soup flavorful and yummy... and again, big size portions that I usually can't finish it all. Part of the food court in the Great Wall market off of Pleasant Hill Drive, this Chinese/Taiwanese place is a delightful treat for people looking for more Chinese/Taiwanese selections. It's also in the supermarket which means you can eat before you shop or shop before you eat - it doesn't matter because you just have to get into the car and drive to one place. We've so far only had the pork chop rice, which was done very well - not overly breaded, fried just right. The one thing with pork chop rice is the sides that come with the dish. Some places give just two side dishes to mix with the rice (see Bento Cafe, Norcross, GA review), and sometimes, the sides could be spicy (see Ming Wa - Los Angeles, CA review), and that's what makes the pork chop rice interesting. Ping's place gave an assortment (5 different items) plus a stewed egg, to compliment the pork chop. Very yummy. They also serve other items that I would go back and try, such as the soy bean milk. The staff is very friendly and can speak both English and Chinese. Even when you speak to them in Chinese, they'll respond in English. read more
