Delicious Yunnan restaurant serving exceptionally flavorful dishes! We stopped by Ping's Bistro on a Saturday around noon and were seated immediately with a party of five. I liked how the restaurant is very spacious with a modern interior that creates a comfortable dining atmosphere. Their food was packed with flavor and outstandingly good. We ordered their Beef Roll with Mint, Stir Fried Chinese Flowering Cabbage, Sauteed Beef with Pickled Mustard, Fried Rice with Ham and Seasonal Greens, and Signature Grilled Fish with Lemongrass. My favorite dishes were the beef rolls, fried rice, and to my surprise--the flowering cabbage. The cabbage was so flavorful, I've never had vegetables stir fried with such fresh umami flavors of crispy garlic and sesame oil-goodness. It also came with pork slices which paired well with the cabbage's flavor. Honestly, all the dishes were packed with its own unique balance of flavor, and I feel like you can't go wrong with any dish you see on their menu that you may think you would enjoy. The beef rolls with mint are refreshing and fragrant. The beef with pickled mustard is sour, gingery and paired so well with the bell peppers. Food tastes authentic and the spice is amazing. Must try if you like Szechuan spice. Best Chinese food I've had in the Bay Area so far. Would warn that if you are not used to this type of Chinese spice, or spiciness in general be aware. Always find it funny to see that my favorite Chinese places have less than 4 stars on Yelp. I dont know who's giving this place 3 stars or less but y'all need to check your palate. Doesn't matter though b/c the Chinese people know its good and its always busy here :). Ping Bistro does Yunnan and Szechuan dishes and does both impeccably. Portions are generous and everything here ive had tastes delicious but also different from each other, which is my pet peeve for some of the Chinese chains that use the same seasoning packet for every soup or dish on their menu. Its wierd that Yelpers recommend the beef rolls cause they are one of the most meh items imo on the menu. Love the pork belly, the stir friend teo chow noodles is mindblowing, many of the dry pots and any of the pots and stir fries with mushrooms are highly recommended. Yunnan dishes are known for their mushrooms and everything is decently spicy so if you can't handle spice beware. This place always has a huge line! We ordered the Dai-style lemongrass grilled fish (傣味香茅烤鱼) -- the seasoning was incredible, super aromatic, and I ended up eating so much rice with it haha. The line was out the door at 5:40pm for weekend dinner. It took about 45 minutes from waitlist until the first dish arrived. As your party gets closer to being seated, they will take your order first so there is minimal wait time. The standout dish was the cauliflower with pork crackling. The smokiness from the slight char of the cauliflower and umami from the pork made this dish my absolute favorite. It was incredibly delicious that I could have finished the cauliflower by myself. The next standout dish was the lemongrass grilled whole fish. It was nice they were able to adjust the spiciness level to mild because the peppers infused in the marinade carry quite the kick. This is more like a 3.5 stars rounding up to 4 because of how the restaurant handles the wait. The wait time is unavoidably long. There is no reservation on Fri/Sat/Sun and generally you'd need at least a party of 8 to make a reservation. And so you just stand there and wait in the front. The front staff will let you know once your table is almost ready and hand you a QR code to order food. However, the food isn't sent to the kitchen until you're actually seated. So if you think that you can order the food that has a long prep time and have it ready by the time you are seated, you are totally wrong. It's understandable why the restaurant does it, but it would be great if they explain this part. Once you got this "wait table" queue/QR code, you'd think that you'd be seated really soon, right? Our party waited for at least another 20 minutes before being seated. And once they finally call you to be seated, they swap the "wait table" QR code to an actual table QR code. And that's when the front staff "approves" of your order and sends it to the kitchen. The food is great! * The famous lemongrass fish is quite delicious. Still a bit oily considering that there is a less oil option. The portion is huge. The lemongrass wasn't overpowering the fish. I would order this again. * The stir fried jade tiger fungi with butter conch was also excellent. The best dish I've had for that meal, actually. Everything blended in together well. * Water spinach with sour bamboo shoots...the sourness of the bamboo shoots do overpower the water spinach. While not surprising, it felt like the dish tasted as if it was without the water spinach. * Fried rice with boletus edulis and ham tasted like a typical Chinese fried rice. Oh, and don't get tricked by the large parking lot. The dedicated spaces for Ping's Bistro aren't much. So, would I return? For the food, it's really tempting to go back again. A friend introduced me this restaurant a year ago. We liked it at the time. The rose cake was fabulous. I took my 75 years old mom there last December. It was horrendous. I was so shocked and unsettled and didn't want to even think about it so my review is four months late. The fried pork ribs were very dry and hard. My mom couldn't even bite it down. The air pot chicken soup was very bland like watered down and the chicken was like small loose pieces from other people's leftovers. Of course, it is absolutely tasteless. The spicy fish was not fresh at all. We wanted to ask the waitress to report this, but there were only two people working that day. I just can't put the blame on them. This experience was horrific and worst dine out ever. It changed my lifestyle as I began to cook mostly at home. It took me four months to write this review, because it took that much time for me to be willing to think about it again. I forgot to mention the shards of bones in the soup. Since the chicken was like leftovers with loose pieces, the bones were like shards. We had to be very careful eating this dish to avoid swallowing the shards of bones. I had a very average experience here. It didn't start so great. My family and extended family chose to come to Ping's Bistro, only to find out there was a 30-40 minute wait for our party of seven. The lobby was crowded, so most of my family opted to go shopping nearby to kill time. I was left to wait for our table to be ready. It didn't help that it was nearly 90 degrees outside, as I witnessed a waiting customer suddenly faint in the waiting area. Thankfully, the workers at the restaurant were swift and attentive to ensure the health and safety of the customer, giving her water, a chair, and escorting her safely out of the restaurant. The professionalism under pressure from the staff was outstanding. After the long wait, we were finally seated. Besides the vegetables and the pork buns, I did not find the meal very impressive. Considering the high price point, I was expecting to get wowed by all the dishes. The food was overall decent, with very impressive pork buns and vegetables, but it was average for the amount they were charging us. Overall, I'm appreciative of Ping's Bistro for hosting our family dinner. My family did enjoy the food, and the staff were attentive to our needs the entire time. However, I do not feel comfortable giving this place any higher than 3 stars due to the waiting problem as well as the high price point. I was pleasantly surprised by the Yunnan cuisine at Ping's Bistro! The steam pot chicken was light and naturally sweet--the chicken was very tender and the soup was incredibly flavorful without being greasy at all. You can really taste the freshness of the ingredients. The stir-fried wild mushrooms were fragrant and perfectly cooked, with great texture and depth of flavor. Overall, the food was refreshing yet full of character, truly capturing the essence of Yunnan cuisine. The restaurant was clean, the service was attentive, and the dishes came out quickly. This place was highly recommended by my coworkers so we stopped by for a quick meal during lunch hours. It was difficult to find parking as there are signs everywhere with restrictions so make sure to check all the signage. It was pretty busy around 12pm but we were able to get seated right away. This isn't your ordinary Chinese food restaurant; this place specializes in Yunnan style, which means lots of spices and herbs. This is a very fine restaurant with offering that aren't commonly found in other Chinese restaurants in the area. It's a shame that they don't have a website to read about their dishes; you can find their menu on DoorDash but the interface is clunky. I guess you'd call this a Chinese fusion restaurant, encompassing multiple culinary traditions such as Yunnan, Sichuan, and Hunan. You won't find the familiar things like chow fun and fried rice here; rather, you'll discover ingredients such as wild mushrooms, pork liver, beef tripe, pig knuckle, and frog, just to name a handful. Basically, this is a good place to come if you're feeling a little adventurous. On our recent visit, just the two of us, we ordered the sauteed pork with black fungus and egg and pork liver with chives. Generally speaking, we really appreciated that the dishes were neither overseasoned nor oversalted, which can kill an otherwise promising meal. The pork and black fungus dish was very delicious, though the use of small jalapeno peppers for the heat, as opposed to red chili peppers, seemed a little out of place. The texture of the black fungus (a little bit of crunch) was nice. The pork liver was also prepared well, though the chunks of ginger, if you don't realize you're taking a bite, can overwhelm the flavor. The liver was thinly sliced so that even if there was a piece that was slightly tough it was still easy to bite through. The chives had good flavor; the Chinese chives gave it a nice kick as well. The restaurant has a very simple decor, modern and unadorned with the kitschy stuff that sometimes appears in Asian restaurants. There was a curious wall of glass between the dining area and a work area, but you didn't see the cooks hard at work behind the glass - just some supplies and extra chairs. I don't see the point of this at all. Service was just okay. You order with a QR code on the table. Someone did come by to confirm our selections, but other than dropping off some extra napkins and bringing us the card reader to pay (which they just left at the table), there was virtually no interaction with the restaurant staff. No one looked our way when we needed to get our takeout boxes, so we had to call out to a dazed-appearing server who was walking past our table. read more

ABSOLUTELY MY FAVORITE CHINESE RESTAURANT IN THE BAY, hands down. This place is just so so delicious!! I'd eat this everyday if I could. Taste-wise, this place takes it a notch higher than any other Chinese place in the Bay Area. I am a super fan of their shredded cabbage and sliced pork, but I'll talk about a few more dishes that I love in the meantime. 9.5/10 - Yunnan style spicy papaya with fish I knew I had to try it when EVERYONE had this dish in their tables. I know the name sounds a bit intimidating and avant garde but the taste of this dish is heavenly. It's actually a tomato heavy dish that is topped with small chunks of papaya. There's a tinge of spiciness, but the natural flavor of the tomato goes oh so well with the perfectly tender fish fillet slices. 8/10 - stir-fried mushroom with green peppers and yunnan ham Again, such an underwhelming name that does so little justice to the explosion of flavor it has. The mushrooms are just absolutely delectable: each ear is infused with umami flavor from the smoky ham and the freshness of the green peppers. You'd have to get this dish with a side of rice because this dish is what rice was grown. 10/10 - stir fried cabbage with sliced pork I've saved the best for last. Whoever cooks this dish deserves a standing ovation. This dish is served in a little wok over those purple fires. But from the moment it's carried to your table, you'll be able to smell an aroma that is just the right umami smoked flavor. Each piece of cabbage is coated with a clear golden sauce that explodes with savory, slightly garlicky goodness. The pork slices are the perfect complement, as they provide concentrated packed flavor. I've tried other dishes, but these are my top three. I also really recommend their lychee drink. They actually deep fried the fish first, then grilled it with heavy spices that you often see at Chinese bbq places. Greasy, salty and therfore tasty.....LOL.... As you'd expect as the food really is quite good. But after around 10 minutes we were seated. I won't go into every dish as we ordered a lot, but Ping's covers a lot of bases. They have spicy and mild dishes, meaty and veggie dishes, simple/clean and fatty/strong flavors. Just so much to enjoy. I think you'd need to come multiple times to try everything you'd want on the menu. Service was fast once we ordered, just our table was hilariously too small for all the food. I tried this place with my mom, my brother and my husband recently we were seated immediately on a Saturday around noon. I don't think they take reservations. Parking was kind of crazy because the lot is not that big. The food was really big portion sizes and enough for four people my only problem is it is really salty and spicy even the stuff that's not from Sichuan. My mom is actually from there and she thought the dishes were just ok. I have been to better Chinese restaurants than this. I miss the Japanese place that used to be here that was our go to for almost a decade. I don't really know if we would be back. I'm glad we tried it I guess. Really great Yunnan food! We came here before for dinner but decided the wait was too long for a large party but came back for lunch. There is a waitlist you can join once you arrive but it's been pretty busy on weekends and we ended up waiting 30 min for a table for 2. The portions are large so we ended up just splitting the lemongrass grilled fish and chicken & mushroom soup. Both were delicious and the lemongrass fish was perfect! So nicely grilled and the lemongrass, ginger, herb mix on the fish was super fragrant and yummy! The soup was also great with lots mushrooms and tender chicken. Definitely try to come with more people to share the dishes and try more items. The tables are a bit small though for the large plates so it is a bit awkward to share but the flavor is worth it. read more

This place is popping during lunchtime on a Thursday with even a waitlist forming at noon! If it isn't a sign of a popular spot, I don't know what is. Seems like recent rennovation of a Taiwanese spot that used to be here and now they are a bearer of some interesting eats from Hunan and Yunnan. Seems like this is mostly pretty good stuff to be had, so definitely worth a check out. Excellent service that checked in on us frequently for refills and took care of dishes upon request with polite efficiency. QR code ordering system, pay upon request or upfront. Their online menu still has a few kinks, but it's functional. You can't change spiciness levels here for some reason, so folks that can't handle the heat be warned. Space inside isn't quite arranged very optimally, since there's a lot of walled off empty spots behind a glass wall, but it's a clean and slick interior. Definitely spiffy and more upscale furniture. Water served with mint and lemon in caraffes for convenience. Steamed Pork Belly with Preserved veggies - 4/5 The pork belly itself is extremely luscious and decadent, just like it should be! The meicai underneath is quite salty, but also seems to lack a lot of the typical aroma I'd expect of it which is rather disappointing as it just tasted mostly generic pickled veggies. The buns that are traditionally served with this dish are extra, but didn't quite add enough value to justify the asking price. Stir-Fried Chayote Leaves w/ Dried Chili Peppers - 5/5 Fascinatingly crisp and crunchy texture that leaves a very satisfying feeling when you have them with a mild amount of heat. Definitely not a typical green I'm used to seeing, but definitely worth trying if you're tired of just getting green beans or A-choy all the time. Spicy Beef Combination in Steel Pot - 5/5 True to the description it was strongly aromatic, very heavy on the mala and spicy heat! Has just about everything you could ask for in a pot with offal, lean meats, and tasty joints . The pot was quite densely filled with a solid variety of the good stuff in veggies too (like lotus root) and well worth it. Very hot though! This place doesn't feel welcoming to non-Chinese speakers. The food is good but very expensive. The restaurant has nice decor and is clean. However, the tables for two are quite small and don't have enough space for all the dishes. The service is okay -- not particularly attentive, but the waiters will acknowledge you and fulfill your requests quickly. What I really didn't like was their check-in process. It's very disorganized. People stand in line in front of the iPad, but they're not actually waiting to sign in, so others end up skipping the line and adding their names ahead of you. You enter your phone number to get on the waitlist, but they don't send a text message confirmation. You have no idea when they'll call you, and when they do, it's in Chinese. If you don't understand Chinese, that's your problem -- not theirs. That's why I say this place isn't friendly to non-Chinese speakers, and I'm one of them. It feels chaotic, with people rushing and worried about others cutting in line. Instead of waiting outside, many just crowd around the iPad. That said, the food is spicy and good. It's worth trying once in a while -- just be prepared for the experience. read more

Apparently Ping's just reopened recently and pivoted from Hunan style food to Yunnan, and it's definitely popping off! We got here before opening time by 5 minutes and there was already a huge line waiting. People streamed in immediately and the place was packed 20 min after, so arrive early! We ordered an assortment of dishes and they were all delicious. My favorites were the fried rice and chicken/mushroom soup! The menu is huge and I want to try everything! Service is consistent and speedy. The food comes out pretty quick given how much variety there is, and the portions are quite generous! It came out to about $30pp. The vibes and decor are so beautiful as well! read more

They just opened recently serving Yunnan fusion food. Yunnan is a province bordering south East Asia. Thus, you may find dishes using spices not used in Chinese traditional cooking like curry, basil, lemongrass, etc. They have some really hard to find dishes which are on the pricier side. 3 of us with a soup and 2 dishes turned out to be $45 each person. We got there when it opened at 11 am, on Saturday and it was already full. Food we ordered: - chicken soup with wild fungi in steamed pot 5/5 healthy soup, everything in there is edible, at least 2 kinds of mushrooms - grilled fish with lemon grass 5/5 my favorite - stir fried chayote leaves with dried chili peppers 4/5 hard to find vegetables but I prefer the Cantonese version cooked in chicken broth. Some of the stems are not edible when it's just stir fried Service - love they give us lemon and mint water. Wait staff is very helpful with recommendations Ambience - decor is simple and modern. Took a friend to the place for lunch to taste genuine Chinese spicy food and the restaurant served my purpose well. We ordered braised pig trotters, spicy fish, mixed Yunan mushrooms and fried rice. My friend was most impressed by the spicy fish which wasn't a surprise to me as it was served as expected- spicy and tender with a rich flavor. Could be even better if the portion of fish is larger though. read more
