Stopped by Piko Kitchen and Bar in Waikiki for a pau hana session with a friend from out of town. We both opted for their signature Hojicha Old Fashioned cocktail - a delightful concoction of hojicha-infused Kaiyo 7-year Japanese whisky, local honey, and grapefruit bitters. Each sip was a warm, comforting hug with a subtle twist of citrusy goodness. We weren't very hungry, but wanted to try the bao buns on tbe menu. The pork belly bao buns were a flavor explosion with hoisin, pickled mustard cabbage, sichuan salt, and topped with micro cilantro. The warm ginger chicken bao were also delicious - the galangal and spicy scallion salad added a tasty kick. Service was on point - friendly and speedy, just the way we like it. While the live local music pumped up the vibe, it did make it a tad loud for conversation. Validated parking is available with 2 hours for just $4 at the garage located in the Lilia Waikiki parking garage on Walina Street. Really love the ambiance of this resto. I've never noticed this place during the many times I've been here in Honolulu. Resto has outside and inside seatings. Outside seating has a live band playing while inside is quiet. Our server is very friendly and helpful when we asked for recommendations. Food-wise, we had some hits and some misses. You can't beat the deal they have for burger, bao buns and craft beer at 5$ each between 2pm and 6pm. Portions are very small (pupu size) but the flavor is fantastic. Quite often they have live music which tends to be a little loud for a conversation but this place has a great vibe. It was one of my happy places when in Waikiki. This was a fun pau hana place for both locals and tourists to come in Waikiki. Indoor and outdoor seating. Ambiance is modern and hip. Easy to make reservations via OpenTable. Live music was playing outdoor by a local artist, but we weren't able to hear since we wanted AC inside. We ordered lots of dishes and did family style to try a plethora of food. The service was excellent, our waitress was attentive and everyone in the kitchen staff was so friendly. They all passed by and checked in with us as the night went on. I did like that they let us hang out and didn't pressure us to leave as soon as we were done eating. When we arrived they also gave us small 4 shots of drinks -aloe and calpico infused drinks! Really nice gesture. My favorite food items were probably the garlic noodles and braised beef / pork belly bao buns. Oxtail Saimin - oxtail was tender, but the broth was a little salty for my liking. Manila Clams were interesting take on Filipino dish. Side of white rice complemented the dish well. Winter special sticky ribs were tasty. We also got a few cocktail drinks: Piko Punch, Queens Break.. Drinks were tasty, but I didn't really taste the alcohol. Weak for me. Employees were very attentive with server, manager and cooks checking in on our table. It might have been because it was during the Pearl Harbor parade in Waikiki, but at 6:30 on a Thursday night, it was relatively empty inside, which was nice as we had the whole interior to ourselves. Drinks and food came out at a good pace, without wanting for anything. This was a good place to meet some friends near their hotel who were visiting. Good mix of Asian and local fusion. We all ate family style, so it allowed the 4 of us to try a good portion of the menu. The noodle dishes were well seasoned and flavored with garlic. The pork belly bao buns were well made. Eventually he brought them and took our food order. We selected the Okinawa Soba Noodles, the Hawaiian Beef Jerky and the chicken long rice gyoza. All was tasty, but they are small tapas size portions. Also it was difficult to tell if the chicken in the gyoza was cooked through so I opted not to eat the last piece. The noodles were creamy and garlicy, very nice also unexpectedly spicy, so keep that in mind! We would try this place again if not very hungry, but not if looking for a big filling meal. read more

Just a heads up! While the Bao Buns are delicious and visually appealing, whatever dye they use in the dough, comes out the same color on the other end.... Not very pleasant. A place that both locals and tourists can enjoy, Piko located in the middle of Waikiki on Kuhio Ave. it's great if you can walk over there. Walking over from my cousin's hotel made me feel less guilty about eating so much. This place has a great casual but classy Waikiki vibe with indoor and outdoor seating options. Love the live music which is not too loud! Friendly professional service with a great food and drink menu that includes a lot of local elements in a creative and delicious way! Everything on this second visit was sooo good and I thought better than my first! Started with the Li hing Strawberry Soda which was refreshing and not too sweet. The Kabocha fries (gluten free) with rosemary Gochugaru seasoning and lemon aioli was sooo good! The crispy outside was a perfect compliment to the soft kabocha inside. Loved the Manila clam pinakbet which came with a generous amount of clams! This non-traditional version tasted more like a Thai Tom Yum with its tamarind butter flavor. I'm not complaining because I love the sour soup, just didn't expect it. The braised short rib adobo was very tasty and very tender and paired beautifully with the slightly crispy rice that came with it. Highly recommend this!! For dessert the Mango soft serve is the I only option. Luckily you can't go wrong with it! It is large so three of us did a good job of sharing it. It comes with fun Accompaniments of toasted coconut (my fave), mini mochi balls, puffed rice, pineapple and li hing powder . Our server Clif was friendly and very professional which made it even better. On my first visit I had the Izakaya wasabi potato salad which was not only delicious but one of the best buys in Waikiki! You can taste the wasabi without it being overpowering and the crunch of cucumber and carrot. The Garlic noodles with Waialua egg and freshly grated Parmesan cheese hand tossed was good but would have been better served f we had ordered a protein to go on top. The Loco moco which came highly recommended was a neatly stacked circle of beef atop a circle of rice with was slightly crispy. It wasn't the best I've ever had, but it wasn't bad. Loved the live music by Keoni Ku and Kehau who took over after our less friendly waiter left, was very personable and helpful. Would like to return for Happy Hour 2-5 one day ! read more

Located in the heart of Waikiki, this little gem serves amazing food and drinks. We managed to find street parking, but they do have validated parking located inside the Lilia Waikiki Hotel (enter from Walina St). We were here for a Yelp Elite event, but the food and drinks looked sooo good, we ended up ordering more. They have indoor and outdoor seating, but after spotting a cute doggy, I had to sit outside so I could look at the cutie from afar. First up- the alcohol. We got the Piko Punch per recommendation from our server. She told us that it was a good drink that would leave you walking out a little funny if you drank more than 1. She wasn't wrong! The drink tasted good and if you did drink more than 1, you would definitely feel that punch. Highly recommend this if you are looking for a good, yet strong drink to start the night. We ordered the warm ginger chicken bar buns for our appetizer. The buns are black! Which was SO cool and looked nice for the pictures. It even tasted delicious. The ginger chicken wasn't the traditional Chinese ginger chicken style, but it was good in its own special way. There were pieces of shredded chicken and green onion stuffed into a warm bun. A great app to start off our meal. The garlic noodles was another recommendation. It came with an egg yolk on a bed of warm noodles. The server came by with cheese that he grated on top then mixed with the noodles and egg, which created a creamy, cheesy sauce. The noodles were perfection. If there was ONE dish to order, this would be it. As we were eating, we saw another tables order of fried chicken pass us and we really wanted it, but we were already full. What a gem in Waikiki. Only 5 minutes from our hotel I am sad we didn't come here earlier in our trip only to find it on our last day. Piko has incredible fusion food that really sets it apart from all the other restaurants we ate at. This is not your typical menu. To start I had a Hawaii Blue Lemonade which is non-alcoholic and one of the best "lemonades" I have tasted. A little coconut and citrus is a great combo. To start we ate the Brussels Kimchee which was a fantastic combo. The name says it all. We then went onto the 3 main dishes. First was the garlic noodles with a nice loose egg yolk mixed in and then topped with fresh grated parmesan, grated by our server who then mixed up the noodles, egg yolk and cheese. This was incredible tasting and led us into the two Bao buns. The bao buns are like street tacos, soft pillows of fluffy bao with both braised beef and pork belly. You get two of each, and they are very filling. The flavors in the bao were awesome. The pork belly had a nice big piece of belly that was all meat, not a slab of fat I have gotten other places. Cooked perfect with a crispy outer shell and tender inner of pure pork belly heaven. Our server was awesome, everyone had a smile on their face including ours. DO NOT miss this place. How have I not gone to this little hidden gem before?! They are located in the former food pantry space right under the new foodland in waikiki...in fact like Et Al and eleven they are part of foodland! They have a nice outdoor seating area as well as a bunch of tables inside as well. Really nice ambiance and the night we went there was a guy singing music outside. We parked at international market place and walked over, one thing to note is that they now require you to spend $25 for validation and not $10 like it was before. The service was excellent, we were seated rather promptly and our server was really good, explaining the food options and the things that they liked. Freddie was also an excellent host!! Really made us feel taken care of and welcomed. We ordered a couple drinks, very fancy looking! My wife got this lychee froze which was almost like a lychee slushie, delish! I got this apple pie old fashioned. It had way less of a bite than a normal old fashion in a good way, the maple and the green apple crown they used softened and sweetened it nicely. Food wise we got the Manila clam pinakbet, they give you a lot of clams and the broth...the broth is so good! I also love kabocha which was present in the dish along with green beans and tomatoes. The baos were really really good! The pickled vegetables that they used really balanced out the fattiness of the pork belly. The garlic noodles were good, nice and creamy with the egg and all the parmesan cheese that they grate on it table side. the ahi cakes were good as well! they had a aioli sauce that came with it but honestly it didn't need it. Nestled below the Waikiki Market is Piko kitchen and Bar. Parking garage on Walina st. Indoor seating a nice ocean teal blue, gives an upscale fishing vibe. Whisler basket lighting and earthy backsplash. The wood grains definitely contracts well with the blue. Music compliment the decor and environment. And delicious dynamite rice with seared ahi: a ginger filled dish with spice and buttery flavors to sit and last. The ginger chicken bao was AMAZING. The crunch from the chicken skin, the softness of the bun and the ginger flavor from the sauce compliments each other well. It's like a flavor explosion! Keep in mind to check your friends teeth before leaving the booth the charcoal bun can stick to your teeth. Kombucha fries from the Fall menu was nice and crispy without too much oiliness. The burgers are quality brisket blend, fire grilled to order and with the house made Kim Chee slaw is probably one of the best burgers I've ever had. The house made pickles add a nice pop to an already perfect sandwich. I also highly recommend the garlic fries that came out hot and perfectly seasoned by the chef, I think his name is Kevin. My husband and I had a sample of the sticky pork bites and the seasoning was well balanced. We decided to grab dinner here and ordered the Okinawan Soba Noodles, pork bao buns, and kalbi burger. We enjoyed two out of the three dishes we ordered. The soba noodles were just too salty for my liking. I'm not sure if it's because of the added freshly grated parmesan. I'd definitely have to try it again without the parmesan. What I did enjoy about that dish was the texture of the noodles. They were bouncy and chewy. I just wish it wasn't soooo salty. The world food tour duo stopped in at Piko Kitchen & Bar, a block East of International Marketplace on Kuhio; where the Food Pantry was located years ago. It's an outside / inside venue ... Live music and the bar is outside, the kitchen and tables are inside. We opted for inside (for the AC) and were seated at a table for 4 adjacent to one of the bathrooms. Our server Jasmine started us off with a amuse cocktail ...Calpico Spritz with a mint leaf. Very refreshing but it would have been better chilled. We perused the drink menu and decided against ordering wine; there were only two reds and neither appealed to me. We started with the Shiso Smash and the Mixed Plate Margarita. Both were fine but I switched to an old standby, Hendricks gin & tonic later in the evening. We ordered the AweSsam Tempura Cauliflower, Fried Confit Chicken, Brussels Sprout Kim Chee and Izakaya Wasabi Potato Salad to start. The cauliflower came with a Saikyo miso, ssamjang sauce, spicy perfection to offset the florets of cauliflower. The Brussels Sprouts Kimchi was okay; IMO, the sprouts didn't ferment long enough. The menu said the potato salad used Best Foods mayo, a personal favorite ... imagine a wasabi-tinged potato salad you would get at a Japanese restaurant. For $3, I liked it. The star of the quartet was the fried chicken ... crisp on the outside, moist and tender on the inside. It was served with Sichuan salt and a Kaffir lime. Nuoc cham sauce. Use it or not, the chicken was great! We moved to Pork Belly Bao Buns and Pipikaula; the latter on the recommendation of Jasmine. The bao were huge with large slabs of Hoisin-flavored pork belly and pickled mustard cabbage inside the buns. I would have preferred slightly smaller pieces of pork because I ended up cutting mine in half in order to eat it. Make them more petite and charge less and you'll have a winner! The sole disappointment of the evening was the pipikaula. It was overcooked and lacked the chewiness I long for in pipikaula. Service was satisfactory though I wish the food came out at a pace where we could enjoy one before moving onto the next course. What did we think? The food is interesting and there are gems to be found on the somewhat eclectic menu. I wish for a few more options in wines by the bottle. However, the prices are surprisingly low for Waikiki ... this is the value play in Waikiki; even with a 22% tip, the tab didn't reach $150. 4.5 rating for us. read more
