I don't know what happened to Piccolina in the last year or so but the service and quality of food has become abysmal. I went to grab a breakfast and catch up with an old friend thinking this would be a great spot. The experience was an unmitigated disaster. I ordered the overpriced 15 dollar breakfast sandwich with sausage thinking there's no way for the kitchen staff to mess it up. Instead they delivered to me two pieces of stale bread with unsalted scrambled eggs, an undercooked/raw sausage patty, and without any sort of condiment or sauce on the sandwich. If getting food poisoning or tapeworms from undercooked pork wasn't enough to deter a sane person from eating this dish, you would've needed 4 jugs of water to get the non seasoned and dry sandwich down your throat. I had to send the dish back for my own health and it didn't seem like the staff even had any remorse or shame for what type of atrocious product they put out. Until they improve the quality of the food, please do not put your GI tract at risk at this establishment. read more

Piccolina, the new, small Italian counter/bakery/cafe from the Centrolina chef (which is directly across the alley), just opened this week a couple blocks away from the office so we stopped in. It's a small shop made up mostly of the counter/open kitchen/wood fire oven, some bar seating, and a few tables inside and out. Come in, order at the counter, and grab a seat (or take it on the go). They have an assortment of breads and pastries, as well as some breakfast and lunch options, coffees, and drinks. We tried the white chocolate pistachio scone (a little crumbly, but delicious), the vanilla bombolini (also delicious), eggplant parm (pretty good), and the Porchetta sandwich with mustard greens, grilled onion and provolone. The sandwich was very tasty - melty cheese, delicious house bread, tasty green salsa. Wish the porchetta was a little more prominent/more fatty and rich, but overall I enjoyed it. It's a bit small though, especially at the $14 pricepoint, which was my main complaint - everything was a little small. We stopped here after shopping at the city center. We sat down and waited to be approached for order. After waiting for 10mins, waitress approached us, AFTER she took the order of a person who just sat down. So they were able to get their order in before us as well as their food. We requested for our drinks to come out with the food - that didn't happen. Our water, which after a sip, we asked waitress if it was tap water which she said yes. Not sure why tap water was being served instead of filtered water. Ordered salmon skewers and pizza, which was just ok, not much flavor. The eggs in the sandwhich were not cooked well, it was way too brown and tasted like rancid cooking oil. The ambiance of the place is great-lots of natural light, wood paneling, airy, and spacious. My friend and I were seated immediately and the service was great. We got a pizza with squash, goat cheese, mozzarella, and parmesan. The crust was well-cooked but a little doughy in places and there were way too few toppings for the crust and pizza size and thickness. The pizza could have also used some more flavor-in particular, a balsamic glaze and a bit of black or red pepper would have really helped the flavor profile. Delicious breakfast and coffee at Piccolina. It's pricey ($40+) for 2 sandwiches, 2 coffees and 2 baked goods, but that is to be expected in this upscale Palmer's Alley cafe. No dine-in service during COVID-19, but the staff did their best efforts to make sure all orders were filled correctly and provide contactless payment and delivery. The sister restaurant of Centrolina, the food was of the same high quality and caliber. The egg and cheese sandwiches were sublime. We opted to add veggies and bacon, which added a crispy contrast to balance out the creamy and rich egg and cheese. These toppings were served on a perfectly toasted, slightly sweet brioche bun, which was one of the highlights of the meal. Since this is a pig-out brunch, we also ordered a chocolate chip banana muffin and a chocolate chip cookie as "sides". The muffin was average, but the cookie was stellar. The dough was not too sweet, and packed with mini chocolate chips. And the slightly crunchy exterior but moist interior was a perfect accompaniment to my coffee. The only negativie comment is on the speed of service. It took about 15 minutes to put together this order, which seemed unusually long for breakfast. But I realize that they may have received many online orders and they were short staffed due to the pandemic. We did give this restaurant another try the next day (lentils and egg with mimosas) and the service was equally slow, but the food was spectacular. read more

Cute little restaurant in City Center DC! My husband and I were in the area for some light shopping and popped in here for a quick breakfast bite. As a big fan of Centrolina I was excited to check this place out! It's a great place for bite after shopping. There is a breakfast menu with pastries, sandwiches, omelette, etc, and a lunch/dinner menu that starts at 11am. The afternoon offerings are definitely on the lighter side (don't come here for a large meal). We got the porchetta sandwich to split and the avocado salad. I would recommend skipping the avocado dish- it was fine but came on this unwieldy cracker that was difficult to eat. The porchetta sandwich was divine, smoky with pesto and caramelized onions. Yum. Such a cute place, and the staff is so nice. My mom and I dropped by for a light dinner and just to people watch, we sat outside and had wine, pizza, and bruschetta. The food came quickly and was fresh. The burrata was incredible, straightforward, though I do wish it had come with more than two pieces of bread. The pizza was quite good, though the pieces were large, but it would be fine if you're very hungry.
