Had a great Saturday afternoon at Piatto in Laguna Beach. We tried the Fritto Misto, Linguine di Mare, and Pappardelle Pesto. The Fritto Misto was especially good--crispy, light, and really flavorful. The seafood pasta was also excellent. The pesto pasta was good, though the sauce could have had a little more flavor. The best part of our visit was Christina. She was friendly, attentive, and gave us excellent service. She's also the bartender and made us an amazing mango-pineapple margarita that was unique and delicious. Great food, relaxed atmosphere, and outstanding service from Christina. Piatti in Laguna Beach has the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to linger. It's lively, warm, and full of good energy, yet comfortable enough to enjoy every word of the conversation across the table. We came for dinner with friends and left feeling as though we'd shared an occasion. The food gave us plenty to talk about. A chopped salad with garbanzo beans and little chunks of cheese was a fresh start. The Rigatoni Bolognese, recommended by our waitress, Bou Bou, was deeply satisfying, while the lasagna was so tender it seemed to melt in your mouth. Bou Bou also pointed us toward the Wednesday offer on half-priced bottles of wine. We enjoyed the Bianchi Chardonnay and Piazanna Chianti before ending the meal with affogato. As good as the meal was, Bou Bou is what made the evening exceptional. She put us at ease from the moment we arrived, guided us through the menu with confidence, and remained attentive without interrupting the easy rhythm of dinner. I had the Piatti in La Jolla years ago (5+ years) and remembered how much I loved it and so was excited when I was by the beach and found out that there was a location here! I was so excited to try some of my favorite things only to be disappointed by 1) big menu difference from what I remember from years ago (not their fault) but also 2) big quality difference from what I remember (big disappointment). It sucks because I came here for a birthday celebration on a Saturday lunch. The restaurant wasn't busy at all but just felt like we were ignored. As other people came in, they were getting more service and actually got their breads right away (before their food). In our case, the bread only came AFTER they already brought out the pasta and pizza. In fact, the pasta was ready for a while on the counter but they brought all of the food at the same time... including the bread that's an appetizer? Weird. Since the pasta sat on the counter for a bit it wasn't that hot anymore and the pasta got all stuck together. Carbonara ($21)--Don't get it. Flavor wise, definitely not the one you'd expect from a good Italian restaurant. They use heavy cream and the pancetta is nowhere close to crispy or browned in any sense and was just... there. Squishy might not be the right term for it since it wasn't raw but there was no crisp exterior at all. Just soft. Just there. Again, bucatini noodles at this point were all stuck together and we had to really mix to get the noodles kind of separated again. Rigatoni ($26)-- Overcooked rigatoni in the year 2026? What even is this. Why is it so soft !!!! Not al dente at all. Just soft and soaking up the sauce. Sauce was fine but nothing special and the rigatoni itself was overcooked. Don't get. Any beginner cook can make this level at home. Caesar ($16)-- The best thing we got actually. It was the only thing actually good so we had to ration it in between bites of everything else. Funghi ($21)-- Crust was good and not too thick or thin. It's sweeter than I was expecting though. Like 80% sweet 20% savory. Not outright bad but don't think I'd get it again. It's just ok. Bread ($5)-- I miss the days when bread was complimentary. The dipping sauce was really good and was like how I remember. The bread itself was whatever, just a vehicle to soak up that sauce. The breadsticks (too long to fully make it into the picture) were too crispy to even enjoy... maybe just for aesthetics? Anyways, big disappointment. I don't say this lightly but I wonder if the food and service would have been better if me/my group was white. Or, it could just be we were unlucky and got a bad crew working that day. I would hope this isn't their standard. Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone and I'm sure there's better Italian places in the area. Decided to try this place out, walked in around 7:30 and we were seated immediately. Have to say, we were very impressed, not only by the food but by the amazing service! Our bartender, Daniel, was knowledgeable and well versed in all things drinks and food. Chef Jose has some amazing dishes- the short rib stole the show. Chef even came out and introduced himself- a personal touch. The manager- I believe his name was Bon, came and asked us how everything was. Felt like everyone worked as a team and made sure all the guests were well attended. 10/10 experience, would definitely revisit again soon. read more

It's been a struggle to find a good restaurant in the area that is near the boardwalk and our favorite gelato place...this was a last minute find and we left satisfied. Service was very good - pleasant, attentive and accommodating. It's a good location right off Ocean and there was a nice bustle in the restaurant and people seemed genuinely pleased. I must say the pricing is very appropriate to what you get. The one hiccup we had was with the pappardelle pesto pasta - just too lemony and couldn't even taste the pesto. My daughter took one bite and asked why does it taste sour? I tried it and all I tasted was citrus. Thankfully, it was returned and replaced with the carbonara, which was ok but we wish the pancetta would have been rendered more. As for the other pasta dishes - the rigatoni bolognese and linguine mare - they were ok. Felt like they just put the bolognese on top of the rigatoni right before serving because none of bolognese actually saturated the pasta. The linguine was very runny so it lacked flavor. My son loved the Margherita pizza so it was good to see him happy. I also ordered a drink but forgot the name - it was well made and a pleasant sip through the meal. Wow wow wow, this Italian spot if a must try in Laguna! My friend and I had a long morning walk and worked up an appetite for some pizza. Found this spot and it had great reviews, so we decided to give it a shot. It was Sunday after the 4th around 12:30 and we got sat right away. They sat us outside next to the little fountain which was really nice. We shared the spaghetti pomodoro and the bianca pizza, the most perfect combo. The pizza had a phenomenal crust with a good amount of toppings. The spaghetti was such an elevated classic. Pasta was cooked to perfection and meatballs were so yummy. read more

This place has a beautiful atmosphere and a great indoor and outdoor patio. I loved that the patio is covered from the direct sun while still giving you that beachside feel. It's also very close to the beach, which makes it a great spot to relax and enjoy a meal. My first impression wasn't the best because the male host who greeted us seemed very low energy and uninterested in helping us. His tone felt off, and I honestly thought we were going to receive poor service because of that interaction. Thankfully, everything changed once we met our waiter. He was fantastic and completely turned the experience around. His recommendations were spot on. The beef carpaccio was a 10/10, the whipped ricotta was amazing, and the spaghetti was hands down the star of the meal. I was debating between the linguini and the spaghetti, and he strongly recommended the spaghetti. We ended up ordering both, and while the linguini was very good, he was absolutely right. The spaghetti was incredible. The meatballs were soft and flavorful, the pasta was perfectly al dente, the sauce was beautifully seasoned, and the fresh basil really brought everything together. Came here for lunch on a Tuesday around 11:30am. We were the only ones in the whole place for a majority of the time! We sat outside on the patio which was really nice and shaded but also trapped the heat. We started with the whipped ricotta - so different and lovely. Lemony, pesto-y deliciousness! Our waiter also let us know to ask whenever we needed more bread which was refreshing to hear instead of feeling bad asking for more or getting charged. Would absolutely order this again. Next we had the Bianca pizza. This has preserved lemon as well and was quite refreshing and different than most pizzas. We shared between two of us and went home with leftovers (probably because we also had the bread w the whipped burrata). Would order again. We ended with the affogato which was the perfect dessert. Great experience and ambience at Piatti! Located right off ocean Avenue by the Whole Foods. Ended up paying for meter parking, as there isn't a designated parking lot for the restaurant. Loved the diavola pizza, the carbonara and ricotta served with bread as an app. Service was great. Food came out at a reasonable time as well. The patio was lovely! Tables were not on top of each other and there was a nice fountain and I wasn't too chilly at night. We brought our dog with no issues. The male hosts were odd, we had a reservation for 2 and they sat another table for 2 before us who didn't have a reservation as well as a massive party. It wasn't a big deal but weird way to start the night and there was no sense of urgency after they were 15mins late to seat us. But again, Hannah made all of that disappear when she took over service. Downward Spiral?? - We had made a reservation and were so excited to return to Piatti yesterday (12/27) for a late afternoon lunch/dinner ~ only to discover that, due to extreme and severe staffing shortages, neither the bar nor interior tables were being used. There seemed to be 3 or 4 people only - trying unsuccessfully to do everything, with tables uncleared and overall restaurant at about 20% capacity. Only the patio was being used - and only about 70% of THAT area.... I fear for the future of this business, given that despite limited customer patronage it will nevertheless have to cover start up, operational and long term expenses. Most if not all surrounding restaurants were actively teeming with post Christmas visitors... We cancelled our reservation and went to nearby Carmelitas instead - which was busy and wonderfully festive. read more

Best Italian food in OC we have tried so far. We were blown away the whipped ricotta and the linguine di mare. The whipped ricotta appetizer was so creamy and the basil oil it is prepared with was such an aromic and flavorful add. We will definitely be visiting this restaurant again and absolutely will order the whipped ricotta. The linguine di mare was also phenomenal. It had a comforting sauce almost that of the same consistency and comfort of soup on a cold day. Unfortunately the carbonara was not a dish I would recommend. The consistency was too thick and the flavor profile was pretty lacking. The espresso martinis were also very solid! I have had better espresso martinis but I very much appreciate how the focus was on the espresso rather than on added sugar and cream. I would order the espresso martini again as well. As for the service, our server was fantastic! She was efficient, fast, and friendly and positive person to be around. What an interesting little place! The food was actually really good, and I am sad I didn't get more photos. I had the short rib, and it's one of the best I've ever had. We got the ricotta and pistachio spread. We also got a Caesar. The salad was average, but the dressing was clearly Homemade and I appreciated that. It's well-lit inside. Feels really warm and inviting. The reason for the 4 stars? The service was patchy. Our server was very friendly. But the busboys were doing that thing I hate in any restaurant. You have a bite or two left, and are having a conversation, and they ask to take your plate. (I think this happens more when it's slow.) In addition, they would clear silverware and plates, and glasses, and another course was served, and we had to flag down someone to bring us utensils. Just poor execution on their part. The restaurant clearly wants to be a more fine dining experience, but they lack the training of their staff to do so. We will still come back. The food was really good! read more

My family and I frequently dine at Piatti in the Bay Area, and we have always been impressed by the authentic Italian food, creative drinks, and delicious desserts. So, while vacationing in Laguna Beach, we were thrilled to discover Piatti there as well and what a wonderful surprise! We visited to celebrate my daughter's birthday, and just like always, the ambience was nice, you can sit outside or inside, the food was absolutely spot-on. We started with the Frito misto, followed by the spinach and ricotta tortellini, and linguine di mare, everything was delicious and beautifully prepared. I highly recommend all of them! What made our experience even more special was the warm and welcoming staff. The chef and manager both came by personally to wish my daughter a happy birthday, which was such a thoughtful touch. Although this is a small chain, it is run like a family owned business with Donny the general manager at the helm, who happens to be from the Laguna area. The space is very well designed inside with a nice bar and dining area- but the place to be is on their spacious patio We had a very attentive server named Lino who was warm and has a nice low key disposition We brought our own wine and did experience a higher than normal corkage fee of $35- but it was fine. Although they could use larger wine glasses for the wines to open and breath better We ordered the funghi pizza which had numerous types of mushrooms, onions, whipped ricotta, etc. Overall it was tasty The short ribs was the star dish of the night and would go back just for this. It comes with a salsa verde which is actually a pesto sauce, a developed reduced balsamic sauce over a bed of marscapone polenta. So good! We had a few other dishes that were ok- and the manager off the bill which was very smart and nice. Drinks Though I wasn't drinking that evening, I did have a sip of both the Old Fashioned and the Espresso Martini...and wow, both were expertly crafted. I'm usually not a fan of Espresso Martinis, but this one had a perfect balance of alcohol, espresso, and sweetness. Honestly, I could have sipped on it all night but unfortunately, my stomach wasn't feeling too well to be able to have alcohol. The Food Now the best part...the food! Italian Breads A simple starter with a variety of breads and dipping oil. Nothing particularly special, but for $5, it's a nice way to nibble while waiting for the main courses. I could take it or leave it. Spinach & Ricotta Agnolotti (or possibly Tortellini?) Served as a shared appetizer, this was easily one of my favorite dishes of the night. It had a bold, distinctive flavor profile that stood out and left me wanting more. I'd return just for this dish and this dish alone. Well... maybe... Linguine di Mare This seafood pasta came with a generous mix of clams and squid in a light sauce that let the seafood shine. Finished with garlic, breadcrumbs, and chili flakes...it looked beautiful but was my least favorite of the evening. On its own, it's solid, but it just overshadowed by the other standout dishes. Rigatoni Bolognese This was my main dish...I wanted to try a classic red sauce pasta, and it delivered. It was good, comforting, and well-prepared, but not especially memorable. If you're a fan of red sauces, you'll enjoy it, but I'd still recommend the spinach & ricotta pasta over this. Funghi Pizza This entrée was another favorite of mine! As a mushroom lover, I was thrilled. The rich, earthy flavor of the mushrooms paired beautifully with the dough, cheeses, and toppings. This was also loved by everyone at the table and would say this is a must-try if you visit Piatti. Overall, Piatti delivered an unforgettable evening---from the ambiance and service to the well-executed food and drinks. Oh my gosh, the food is so delicious. My wife loves spaghetti and this was just next level. I have the chicken piccata and it was delicious. We're definitely gonna come back. The reason why I gave it four stars instead of five because of our waiter while he was a super nice guy he couldn't remember what our order was good thing we corrected him or we would've gotten the wrong thing. After he took her out, he went to another table and I guess he just forgot that the other table got their food long before us. But I'm not gonna let that stop me from coming back. Piatti was an absolute vibe! The location that they have on Ocean is perfect. Right when we walked in, we were greeted by a really nice hostess. What I loved most were the bartenders. They had such good energy and they were so welcoming! Immediately they asked us if we would like a drink while we waited for a table, and we enjoyed some Pinot Grigio. Who seated, we were presented with the vast menu plenty of options, lots of good plant based ones for myself as well, and they were accommodating to modify a couple dishes. I'm Italian and vegan, and the beauty is that most Mediterranean food has an incredible plethora of plant-based options. The pacing was great, even though the restaurant is really new. they were very much on point. We met one of the managers and they were great.
