Phoenix is somewhere in the middle of the pack, but at $17 dollars for a bento sized portion, it is definitely not exactly inexpensive as it was back in the day of pre-covid. Ordered UberEats since there's a BOGO deal for their Assorted Mochi! It's usually $8 for 4 pieces but $8 for 8 pieces?! What a DEAL! There were 4 flavors - mango, red bean, sesame, and taro! The mochi was so soft and fresh! I couldn't finish them all in one day and saved some for the next day and it still tasted so delicious! The taro was my favorite because it was stuffed with plenty of real taro! It wasn't too sweet and tasted so good! The mango was quite sour but would have been more enjoyable if it was sweet. The red bean was good since the filling was full of red bean. The sesame was so yummy! It wasn't too sweet and was definitely my second favorite. I have to take it down a notch. My usual go to which is the steamed fish has changed a they changed the fish and it tastes terrible. Before it was a mild tasting white fish but this time it tastes like catfish- fishy and muddy. I ate two fillets to make sure and I couldn't eat the rest. I didn't even take it to go. I told them and asked if they changed the dish and they did. Honestly changing the protein to a completely different tasting one is in poor taste. Nothing is worse biting into your favorite dish and having it taste really, really bad. I'm giving this place a break and I won't come back in a while because of this. I will be back, but if you get the steamed fish ask if it's the new fish bc it was actually so gross. They didn't even offer to take it off (since I barely ate it) or discount or something else. My first time at the Temple City Phoenix Kitchen location after the San Gabriel one closed, and I was so happy with the experience. Ping was an amazing server, so kind, welcoming, attentive, and full of great recommendations. We ordered the minced chicken with seaweed and fried egg, Thai flavor seafood soup, noodle soup with pork, beef king pao, and sticky rice, and everything was absolutely delicious. The portions are definitely worth the price, and the lemon iced tea was so refreshing. The ambiance also made the meal even better. There was plenty of seating, the benches and chairs were comfortable, and the music was kept at a low enough volume to easily enjoy conversation during the meal. I tried their crunchy chicken fried rice bowl and beef and rice dish and while the beef was good, the chicken dish was practically flavorless and tasted as if you were just eating straight up gluten. I love how close this is to home, and I've never had any issues ordering from here. Staff is always friendly and this location seems cleaner and new. There is street parking and also parking out towards the back. I usually order through their Phoenix app, and that process seems to work best for me. Food comes out fresh and the portion size is reasonable. I typically order: Hong Kong Style Beef Stir Fried Chow Fun which is really good compared to the ones I've tried at other Asian restaurants. They give you a good amount of beef for the amount of noodles given. Scrambled eggs w/ Shrimp - Always such a hit and feels like home everytime I have it. Desserts here are really good. I always get the Mango Pomelo Sago w/ Silken Tofu. It's super refreshing and I love the taste of pomelo in the tofu. You can also never go wrong with their mixed tapioca drink. I only give 3 star for this review because there is super hot and almost no air conditioning during summer when you dine in. We been here many times and this is probably one of the many times where they don't have a lot of servers so the service was quite disappointing because when we're ready to order they make us wait like 15 mins before noticing that we're ready. I feel like there should be more workers especially for a restaurant but no there was only 2 workers which is most definitely not enough. Seems like a relatively newer location as the interior is clean and somewhat modern looking. The service is pretty nonchalant, but flag down just about whoever and they come right over without any fuss. Also unique to this location is that it has parking spaces behind the restaurant, but it's kind of a pain to pull into/out of. Anyhow for food here, we shared some lettuce wraps, fried squid with spicy salt, an order of hainan chicken, string beans Szechuan style, and a chicken noodle soup. Everything was pretty good, I think the only thing I didn't enjoy as much as I normally do was the string beans. Tasted like they didn't make it right and not nearly as tasty as some of others I've had in the past. "You gotta try this place out!" My foodhound cousin blurted out as we were driving through Temple City. So we stopped here to order our lunch. Why not? Variety is the spice of life. As it turned out my cousin ordered some tasty dishes like Penang Char Char Teow and Sliced Prime Rib w/Korean BBQ sauce. And we got ourselves a couple of Mixed Fruits Tapioca beverages to go. Now the Penang Char Char Teow is basically Malaysian stir fried noodles with shrimp and Chinese sausage which I must say is really a form of comfort food for me. Very tasty and elegant in it's messy simplicity. The Sliced Prime Rib w/Korean BBQ sauce is the bomb with white rice which always compliment the meat. Very savory in a salty-sweet kind of way. And the Mixed Fruits Tapioca beverage was awesome with that milky coconut flavor, various chopped melons, and tapioca of course. Enjoyed it! "why did they order a no tapioca for a tapioca drink? Really? Are they serious? I Might as well make all of them no tapioca." In a really rude tone. And went on and on as the cashier girl laughed. It's pretty much like Phoenix Cafe but with more of a food selection. So we got there and they set up some tables outside. I got one of those fruit drinks which was popular with the kids. We ordered a variety of dishes which included fried rice, green beans, orange fish, chow fun and chow mein, as well as udon. Food came out pretty fast and overall was tasty. I wouldn't say anything was exceptionally delicious but all pretty decent. Service was decent but like the food, not exceptional.
