What's there to say about an iconic place? That you must try and you must come and buy one of everything because you will get home and wish you did after your first bite of anything!!!!

My son took a trip from Reno to Los Angeles and picked up some delicious sugar butterflies for me. Still as delicious as I remember them 60+ years later. The bakery is still as busy as previous visits. Same great service and quality along with the price!

My family has come here since I was born. My birthday was never the same without a birthday cake from Phoenix Bakery. The fluffy white cake with fresh strawberries and cream layers have me always thinking back to my childhood. They do have other desserts there, but the cake is the reason I make the drive to Chinatown. If you need a large cake, you have to order in advance. You CAN buy cake by the slice here. There is very little parking, so street parking is your best bet.

Ok I can see why the cake is popular and they been around for 89 years! Visiting Socal I made sure to bookmark this spot and made the drive down. Since it was a week day parking was easy. The ladies were so sweet and friendly. 1 strawberry whipped cream cake 1 strawberry whipped cream cake with almond 1 chocolate ganache 1 neopoleon Small box of almond cookies I must say the strawberry whipped cream cake is the best I ever had! I've had strawberry cream cakes from other places but it does not compare with Phoenix. It's not overly sweet and the whipped cream is so fluffy and not overly sweet either. Cake is moist and fluffy. Similar to asian cakes. The slice almond cakes is a must in my opinion but we did order one without for my son. The chocolate ganache was moist and chocolatey. My son said he could eat a bunch more slices. The neopoleon was amazing. Huge and full of custard and cream. The crust was flaky and crispy. Worth every bite! I love that the bakery had the old historic vibe. The sign is nostalgic and I'm definitely coming back!

I absolutely love Phoenix Bakery, and so does my family. My mom has been coming here for years, so for her 45th birthday today, I knew I had to continue the tradition and pick up a cake from the same place she's always loved. From the moment you walk in, there's such a strong sense of nostalgia. I've always adored their logo, and stepping inside just feels warm, cozy, and welcoming. There are so many sweets and goodies to choose from. It's honestly hard not to want one of everything. The almond cookies are a personal favorite, but I've been eyeing those sugar butterflies and definitely need to try them next time. Of course, I had to go with their classic fresh strawberry whipped cream cake for my mom, and it did not disappoint. They even had candles available for purchase (and some complimentary ones on the counter), which was super convenient. I was in and out quickly, and the girl who helped me was awesome, friendly, efficient, and her handwriting on the cake was so neat and pretty! Consistent quality, great service, and honestly such an important part of LA history as the oldest family-owned Chinese bakery. It's places like this that make me proud to support local businesses. I truly love everything about this bakery. It holds so many memories for me, and I'll continue coming back for years to come. One day, when I have my own kids I hope to bring them here just like my mom brought me. Please do yourself a big favor and support this local gem!

After the 2026 L.A. Chinatown Firecracker 5/10K Run/Walk & Bike Ride event for the Year of the Horse, I visited the famous iconic Phoenix Bakery in L.A. Chinatown. Wow, it has been in business for 88 years since 1938. One OG bakery still going strong! Shop was clean and organized. Limited inside seating. Cool merchandise for sale. You will need to ask the staff for assistance since merch is behind locked window case. They are known for their signature strawberry whipped cream cake. I have tried them in the past. They are very light and creamy, but taste was just okay. Nothing extraordinary. They sell a variety of cakes, pastries, and other baked goods. I come here mainly for their super yummy sugar butterflies aka dansan... Chinese pastry made from fried dough and covered in a thick, sweet syrup. They are light and flaky. SO VERY GOOD! Please be warned... it will get very sticky at the teeth! They come in two sizes. I go for the larger size that comes with 6. I feel the smaller ones are much darker in color that may be overcooked. I prefer mine a bit lighter in color. Staff lady was cordial and friendly. She took my order and packaged it quickly. I also got one Uberry slice cake and one Choco Mousse Matcha slice cake. Unfortunately, I didn't care for either of them as the cake was dry. Both were lacking sweetness and taste. Will not get them again. Paid parking can be found at various blocks and on the streets. FYI street parking is free on Sundays. I got lucky and found street parking. Phoenix Bakery is a must stop when visiting L.A. Chinatown! They can get extremely busy. Please be patient. The wait is worth it.

My go to for birthday cakes. The cakes are fresh and not too sweet. Been coming here since they opened and since I was born. Service is great and fast. Place is clean and well maintained and organized. Shall be back again.

If you ever want the lightest, most delicious whipped cream filled cake Phoenix Bakery is the spot. Decades later and they are still baking the same amazing cakes. Service is great and there's lots of cookies and pastries to choose from.

They are known for their strawberry cake! However, I'm allergic to them so no-go for me. They do have other cakes and pastries to choose from. They mostly have sweet pastries with a couple of savory ones. I got a little bit of everything during my visit. The pastries were good and satisfying. The cakes were okay. I don't know if it's because I got slices or what.

The business was clean, and the pastries were in refrigerated cases. We ordered the strawberry cake and it was delicious. I only wish we had time to go back and try some of their other pastries.

I drove from Pasadena to Chinatown specifically for a birthday cake from this bakery, it's a nostalgic cake my boyfriend grew up eating as a kid with his family, and yesterday was his birthday. I wanted to surprise him with this cake. I did a lot of planning. I researched their cake sizes and options ahead of time, then called shortly after they opened to check availability before making the trip (especially since smaller size can sell out I read online). The phone call was extremely off-putting. The woman who answered was EXTREMELY rude, she interrupted me sharply when I started explaining I was looking for a small 6" or medium 8" cake all depending on what they had in stock because it's only two of us. snapped "I didn't ask you what size you want I asked how many people it was serving" and repeatedly stressed how busy they were with "10 people waiting" and a constant line every day. She made same-day pickup sound like a huge imposition, treating me as if I was lucky they'd even consider it. That description couldn't have been further from reality! When I arrived within the first hour of opening, there was literally one other family in the store, no line out the door, no crowd, no shortage at all. Tons of cakes were available on display, including the size I wanted. I picked it up without any issue. Unfortunately, the cake itself was a major letdown. It wasn't the light, fluffy sponge cake I expected from this nostalgic bakery, the white cake layers were extremely dry and underwhelming, bland and mediocre, especially given the hype. For the price, the effort of the drive, and especially the attitude on the phone, it fell waaaaaaaaay short. Honestly, any neighborhood Asian bakery could make a better tasting cake. The product quality alone would keep me from returning, but the terrible rude attitude and exaggerated phone interaction was the cherry on top.

The buttercream is incredibly smooth and adds the perfect amount of moisture, making each bite really delightful. We also tried the chocolate chip cookie, which was very good. It had a crisp, slightly crunchy exterior, while the inside was soft and a little underdone--but still delicious, especially if that's the type of cookie you like. The pistachio flavor struck first--not merely a taste, but a DECLARATION. Pure, unadulterated essence of Sicilian nuts, roasted to absolute perfection, ground into submission and transformed into something transcendent. The cream filling cascaded across my palate like a Mediterranean breeze, while subtle notes of butter created a symphony that left me defenseless! But the assault wasn't over. The black sesame cake sat before me, ominous and alluring like midnight itself. One bite, and suddenly I was falling through dimensions of flavor! The nutty, earthy depth of toasted sesame seeds wrapped around me like a silken robe, each layer revealing new secrets. Crisp meringue SHATTERED into a million crystalline fragments, giving way to clouds of cream and an explosion of berry compote that was simultaneously tart, sweet, and utterly devastating. And today I was in the area, I was very excited to finally get a cake from here again! But the service was very disheartening. As soon as I arrived the older lady in the shop was upset because I didn't call to let her know about picking up a cake. For context, I've called before and there's been no answer and they used to have cakes ready to go in the past, so I didn't call ahead of time today. While asking about cakes, she was rushing me and told me several times " you need to be quiet, you talk too much" and not in the kind way. I was just asking about the flavors and if she could add happy birthday and she kept repeating " Be quiet you talk too much." I didnt mind waiting a few mins for the cake to be ready. However she was demanding I sit down all this time and was angry telling me why didn't I call. When asked about payment, and explored card or Apple Pay, she told me the price and said cash only and once again said " be quiet you talk too much" and demanding I go to the bank. I had to walk away as there was no need for her to provide that treatment to a customer who was excited for their cakes. This wasn't a pleasant experience and I hope others don't go through this.
