Phoebes is one of my new favorite places. They have great menu, love the atmosphere, great service, and great pricing. I wish there was more parking, but even that is not a deterrent. Consistently great food, fresh, creative, and super tasty. Servers are always very friendly, and it has a great atmosphere. This is my husband and my favorite breakfast spot by far, and totally worth the bit extra you pay. The coffee is very, very good and elicited a "wow" when we first tried it. Recommend the deep fried French toast, and really wish the chicken and waffles on special recently was a permanent menu item. I had read about this small local Diner in yelp. It's food is simply fantastic. I tried the Eggs Benedict they have there as well as the massive breakfast burrito they provide is amazing and you can clearly tell the ingredients are fresh. The staff is very Austinite friendly which I love. Makes it feel local and inviting. I will return here as much as I can. The quality of food here simply cannot be beat. Only small complaint is that parking is a bit lacking. Towing is enforced there so be very careful when choosing a parking spot. read more

We are here twice in our 4 day trip. And we hate repeating restaurants while traveling. Phoebe's is very cute, though small. I had the shrimp and grits both days, I will dream about that dish forever. I thought I hated grits. I found out the secret is a bucket of goat cheese mixed in! I stole off of everyone's plates, it was all good but didn't come close to mine. I would say that the fried french toast is a fantastic sweet breakfast, and huge. Please go to Phoebe's! read more

I just ate such a delicious breakfast. I can't even explain how good it was. We were seated immediately in the restaurant. I ordered the Migas with a side of hash brown casserole. While the casserole was delicious , the Migas with the hatch chile hollandaise was so phenomenal. It had the perfect amount of heat. While I was stuffed halfway through, I couldn't stop myself from finishing the whole plate. Also, our server was personable, funny and attentive. Would definitely come back here again! read more

I saw some bad service reviews but we came on a Sunday and everyone was hustling and very happy. We are from out of town and really enjoyed it. Worth driving off south congress. We sat at the bar a few mornings ago to get some breakfast. The bar service was amazing, and the drinks were phenomenal. We planned on getting something to eat, but fortunately we were sitting in front of the window to the kitchen. We watched cooks and back of house staff handle food with their bare hands on multiple different occasions with many different foods. We witnessed what looked like a fried chicken breast as well as strips of bacon transferred from the grill to a plate with gloveless and unwashed hands. We didn't see a single cook wearing gloves. We put in an order for food, but immediately cancelled it upon seeing the lack of cleanliness during the preparation of the food they serve to unknowing patrons. The drinks were great, but due to what we saw in the kitchen we have little confidence that the food is prepped in a sanitary kitchen, and handled only by gloved team members using kitchenware. Also, If you or anyone with you has a food allergy be very careful. There seems to be a lot of opportunity for cross contamination. Many Department of state health rules appeared to have been broken, and we are so glad that we cancelled our order when we did. read more

Love having a new breakfast place in our part of town. We had the tater tots with red eye gravy, pickled jalapeños and onions (and the egg and cheese on the side) - really great. Phoebe's Diner is awesome - from the food to the staff to the cute atmosphere to the unique brunch cocktails, everything about Phoebe's made me wish it didn't require a plane ride to eat here. We had the Phoebe's Benedict with slab bacon (thanks for the tip, Yelpers!) and the Shrimp and Grits accompanied by a Michelada and beet and orange mimosa. The Benedict was amazing - perfectly runny egg, velvety hollandaise, and an addictive creamyhash brown casserole on the side. The Shrimp and Grits was otherworldly. The sweetness of the corn complimented the plump and perfectly seasoned shrimp and the goat cheese grits were FANTASTIC. Seriously - they made me wonder why all grits aren't goat cheese grits. My friend and I were obsessed with the three Yellowbird hot sauces served with our meal and when we inquired where they could be purchased, various staff members came over to offer their suggestions on where to get the best price...drumroll...HEB! read more

Really cool place. Went around 10 AM and there was no wait. Highly recommend the coffee and blood orange mimosa. I ordered the fried chicken and goat cheese grits. The fried chicken was phenomenal. Billing itself as "greasy spoon Texas diner" doesn't accurately describe this place. Most places try to shake off this moniker but as theme for a limited seating restaurant, Phoebe's has captured it perfectly. I went on a Sunday morning and got on the waitlist at 10:45 with an estimate seating time at noon. My name wasn't called until 1224 but that is to be expected, this place was packed! After my meal, I understand why the wait was so long, the food was better than any "diner" I would expect to find in the city. I dined with friends and ordered the fried green tomatoes and a stack of flapjacks. My friends ordered the Crabby Patty and Badass Bacon and Eggs. The fried green tomatoes were a good thickness, fried to golden and had a wonderful savory taste. I expecting them to be on the tart side but was pleasantly surprised they had a good flavor, not too heavy on the breading. However, the real star of the plate was the accompanying pimento cheese drizzled with hot sauce. This was not your Grandma's pink lumpy stuff you ate as a kid, this garnish had a clean and cheesy flavor. With a creamy texture and the right about of tang the addition of hot sauce brought out the flavor of the cheese without overpowering the sweetness of the cheese. This pimento cheese deserves to be served on it's own as a sandwich with a side of crispy potatoes. The flapjacks were also quite good. They were huge, fluffy and tender. Good alone with a dash of butter but what's a flapjack without syrup? These are a breakfast lovers dream! My friend had the Crabby Patty. A crispy fried crab patty served on a soft roll with greens and a side of tater tots. The patty was not greasy but had and nice even crust and color. The greens accented it well allowing you to fully appreciate the patty. The tater tots were golden, crisp on the outside and tender inside. Most impressive was as we finished our meal and they cooled, the tots retained their crispness with no greasy aftertaste. Good to know if you take home any leftovers and you probably will, the portions are generous. More on that later. The Badass Bacon and Eggs lived up to their name. 2 eggs were served with really thick bacon slices, toast, cheesy potato casserole and salsa. The over easy eggs were perfect and the toast was still warm and crisp. Our dining companion couldn't get over how thick the bacon was or how perfectly it was prepared. Normally bacon this thick is usually over cooked to make it crisp (and usually inedible) or undercooked to a chewy nightmare. Our friend also mentioned this was some of the thickest bacon he had ever eaten and had a "melt in your mouth" consistency. Not an easy task for such thick slabs of breakfast meat. His only comment was on the potato casserole. It was a cheesy delight but a little too heavy on the onions, otherwise it was a wonderful addition to his meal. Now, about the portions. Generous is an understatement. The flapjacks alone were almost dinner plate size and my only regret was ordering the full stack (2 flapjacks). One is plenty for the average person. Two would definitely satisfy the most hearty appetites. The Crabby Patty was a nice size with just enough tots to make it a meal. The Badass Bacon and eggs proved to be enough food for a lumberjack. The beverage of choice for this meal was coffee. I regret, I cannot remember the name but it was a satisfying brew that paired well with our entrees. When you do visit, remember this is a small place and with the food so tempting, the wait will be long. Get on the waitlist during the very busiest times between 1030 - Noon or go early to get almost immediate seating. Menu prices are between $8-$15. Average prices but a wonderful value when you consider the portions. read more
