Growing up near San Jose, I have a high bar for Vietnamese food, so when I ordered Saigon Pho here, it was really disappointing. The broth had no flavor. Noodles were fine in texture, but the beef was mediocre. I'm reading through some of the reviews and I'm surprised by the comments that this is an "authentic pho experience." Something tells me they haven't had a lot of exposure to eating real Vietnamese food. The one saving grace in the food experience was the calamari. This should've been the first sign on the authenticity of this restaurant. I don't know a lot of Vietnamese places that have this on the menu. You're probably thinking "why did you order it then?" The table next to us ordered it and the smell lured us in. I'll give this shop credit where it's due. The calamari was well seasoned and soft on the chew. The service is what crystallized the one-star review. No one checked in with us after they served our meal. I'm not sure if we did something or said anything, but they went around checking in with other tables around us, even offering more bean sprouts to the table next to us. They didn't really care to say anything or asked if we needed more water. When my girlfriend went up to the bathroom, one of the servers started clearing up her side of the table and taking her cup of water. So I decided to try their main dishes /appetizers. I got their summer rolls with shrimp & avocado and pork bao buns (the latter is not on their online menu currently). On their menu in person they also offered set combos with their pho and banh mi. Overall the flavor was there and the food was freshly prepared. I loved that when I called and asked about the ingredients in the dishes, the employee was able to quickly confirm which dishes contained the allergen. I really appreciated their attention and patience regarding the question! The interior of the restaurant has a tropical vibe with both booths and bar seating. I loved the neon light cat - so cute! The beef pho was nicely packaged with the soup and noodles separated - however I wished the beef was separated so it didn't get cooked all the way. The fried egg rolls with pork and shrimp were delicious as were the fried brussel sprouts (brussels were nicely charred). I live around the corner and have frequented phobar a bunch for lunch/dinner. I honestly think this is the best pho I've had out of all the ones I've tried in Manhattan. The beef pho is sooo flavorful and not too heavy. The bun bo hue is better than the ones I've had in vietnam tbh - I prefer the pho noodles (bun bo hue noodles are thicker), so they allow for me to swap them out too. I went here twice in two weeks and had an excellent experience each time. Pho is one of of my favorite things and I especially love an authentic pho experience, which is what you get here at Phobar. First I got the Saigon Pho. The server offered to make it spicy, and I said sure. Maybeeee it was a little bit spicy? Not sure. But I don't care, that's what Siracha is for. All that really matters to me is that the broth is amazing, and it was. And this place has all the fixings at the ready for you, including fish and hoisin sauce. The serving size was good and the broth was delicious. I was out the door for $20 including tax and 20% tip. Next time I went with a friend and we shared the shrimp summer roles and I got the spare rib pho. The summer roles were awesome. The pho blew me away. See photo -- it was as good as it looks. The ambiance is great. You actually want to eat inside this restaurant. It's cute but not fancy. I'm used to blown out ugly pho restaurants. Those are great too. Sometimes you just need to refuel. This places gives you a little something more without the additional price tag. They put in enough to work to make it nice and show they actually care about the place. I like sitting at the bar, but the tables are great if you have a few people. I would go here at least once a week if I lived closer. I am not going to knock off a star for lack of alcohol, but I could really use a cheap Asian beer with my pho. I hope they are working on the liquor license. Love this new spot! For only 8 months into their biz they have it together. I really appreciated the fresh, healthy menu choices, the kind staff, the inviting interior, the menu design and the positive vibe. I wasn't super hungry so ordered the lettuce-wrap spring rolls, a bowl of beef broth and tried the mango lemonade. The rolls did not disappoint. Flavorful and crunchy. I liked the half-leaf lettuce to DIY wrap (often the full leaf is too much and you have to wrestle with it). The mango lemonade was great with crushed ice (nice detail!). The beef broth was nice with onions and parsley floating. Perfect on a cold night. Note: I'd prefer if they made it a little more rich, deeper flavor. It seemed too transluscent. We were so excited to learn Phobar was reopening so close to where we live! (Just reopened about two weeks ago.) Portion sizes are better than most pho places in New York, with generous amounts of meat and pho noodles. Pho beef broth is 10/10, not too salty, and full of flavor. I was especially excited to try oxtail pho, as this is probably the only location I've been to that has oxtail pho. (And I've tried many pho places around the country!) My partner and I both preferred the oxtail pho, though he also really enjoyed the spicy short rib pho he had ordered. Excited to try other things on the menu, and whenever they bring back their 24 hour stewed broth! Ugh. The food: the chicken pho was full of fatty chicken. Didn't impress me-Simply too much competition in the area for a lackluster chicken pho. The area: right near Barclays so super easy if you're coming in for an event ClassPass warning: I found this place on ClassPass and they informed me AFTER I received my food that this was take out only. The entire bar area was empty but I was not able to sit because I ordered through ClassPass. They blamed ClassPass and said it was a universal rule....however, no other restaurant in the area has that policy. Typically, restaurants will show you their full menu (ClassPass offers a limited menu) and chat with you for a while in order to get you to come back....it works! There were at least 15 empty seats and they couldn't make an exception to a "rule" (that isn't listed on the restaurant ClassPass site). Customer service was seriously lacking. read more
