Slightly below average pho place. The staff is not organized during lunch rush. There isn't a designated waitress per section and they were both running up and down the stairs when people in the seating area downstairs were waiting for service. We were helped by both of the waitresses at different times and due to lack of communication between them they delivered the wrong soda and forgot we asked for the check. Given, it was very busy and quite impressive that they kept up but it would have been handled better. Today's visit was slightly disappointing, though, because it took a ridiculously long time to get our food. At the lunch-rush hour, I would hope they'd have a better plan in place to take care of people who do t have unlimited time for lunch. With that said, other visits have been better on the timing (just make sure to ask for your to-go containers right when you get your food!), and staff - always very nice. I find myself coming here pretty often (since I live a few blocks away). I feel comfortable being there bc the owners kind of know my family. Their service is great honestly. When Im having a bad day i'll just sit in there and order a bunch of food and their food just comforts me. (Sounds hella corny I know haha.) I kind of want to be able to try everything on their menu. (They have such a huge menu)!So far i've tried the hu tiu xao, bun bo hue, shrimp cake, beef w/ lemon grass and rice, and I can honestly say is was the bomb.com! Although they could make just tiny improvements. The bun bo hue wasn't as spicy as other places, that might be just me though cuz thats my favorite noodle soup and I like it really spicy. And the beef was a little more chewier than usual. But other than that it had great flavors and i really liked it. They have the best hu tiu xao! Like they did every right with that dish! Im not complaining! Except they should cut the broccoli into smaller pieces. Haha. The shrimp cakes were alright. Its really really chewy, it takes forever to break down. But they're actually really good. They're really sticky too, so they kind of add alot of oil to break it apart. Im not really sure how I feel about that. Their Thai tea is honestly the best! When I'm at work and I haven't eaten, drank water, or even peed yet and it is 1:30 pm, I am not that picky about what I eat for lunch. By that time, Pho Saigon sounds like a gourmet meal made for me by the delicate hands of cherubs. Since it is the closest Viet place to work where I won't have to fret about walking back up a hill, it hits the spot when I am craving Viet food. On cold days, it is pretty decent for pho. Whenever I get veggie pho, they give plenty of fresh tasting vegetables, and the regular size keeps my belly full. I barely notice the overcooked noodles because I am inhaling my food like I am Sonya Thomas with 15 seconds left on the clock (you don't know her?). I also like to order bun rieu, but it isn't traditional because they substitute the blocks of blood with tofu--hey, I'm not mad at it! No blood, please! The grilled meats are consistently on the salty side, but that's ok, because I will just drink six glasses of water. Oh, their spring rolls are always on point. Crunchy, fat, shrimpy, fresh, yum. The food is excellent. I had dinner here while visiting someone in the hospital The menu is very extensive and I found a lot of entrees that sounded good. I got the Lemon Grass Charbroiled Chicken and it was fantastic! I took the Sweet and Sour Chicken as take-out another time and it was truly the best I have ever had. The Iced Chai Tea is also a great cold treat. During lunch this place is crowded as it is near so many hospitals and many employees eat here. I will defiantly go back. read more

When I first moved to First Hill, and Pho Saigon was still called Chijako Express, I would stop in from time to time just out of convenience. The only difference between the old Chijako and the new Pho Saigon is previously it was a mostly Chinese menu peppered with Japanese and Vietnamese dishes; and now its mostly Vietnamese with some Chinese and Japanese dishes. In any case, It wasn't impressive in the Chijako days, but it served its purpose. It wasn't the worst pork noodle salad (aka Bun - Vermicelli Noodle Bowl), but it definitely was not the best. Honestly, I haven't tried much else there because I'm a pork noodle salad addict. The transition between the old Chijako and Pho Saigon was so gradual I never really noticed, until yesterday. I went back for the first time in maybe a month . . . and my scruffy little mediocre hole in the wall had blossomed! (sort of) They now have BEER and WINE!!! Yes!! And there is more!!! The pork noodle salad was totally different. It was AWESOME!! It is my second favorite in the city after Green Leaf now! It had large amounts of carrots and that sweet white crispy stuff in it (as opposed to a bunch of sprouts and shredded carrots), fresh mint, the lettuce wasn't iceberg, and the pork was perfectly marinated . . . oh yum. I could eat it again today. And I can because it's only $7.60 with tax! Hell yes! Okay, so, the interior still lacks charm; they still have a cheesy lunch Chinese pick 3 type hot plate thing going on; they still have random Chinese and Japanese items on the menu in addition to the Vietnamese items - so Pho Saigon is no Green Leaf - but it is defnitely on the up and up. Turn and Burn Pho place. Convenient. Quick. I came here with a MASSIVE hangover need for greasy vietnamese food. And thats what I got (in a good way) I ordered the vermacelli with skewered pork and egg rolls. Boyfriend ordered the Pho. We were both satisfied by the end of the meal. For me, Pho Saigon has the best pho broth in town--hands down. I also love the sandwiches, fresh shrimp rolls, and the lemongrass chicken vermicelli noodle bowl. This is my go-to dish. It is a big-ass bowl of noodles with a crunchy slaw of daikon radish, carrots, lettuce, and cabbage, fried lemongrass chicken, and a cup of fish sauce on the side. There are however, certain foods I have not had the best experiences with. #1 Anything in the pre-made window. #2 Shrimp vermicelli noodle bowl. #3 50% of the time the bread on the sandwiches is so damn stale that I cut the roof of my mouth. I am seriously surprised that after 29 reviews, this place has 3.5 stars. I ordered the tendon and rare beef pho with a blueberry bubble tea. My friend had the sweet and sour chicken with the blueberry bubble tea. The broth was amazing.. it was full of flavor and delicious!!! This is your basic Chinese takeout/no surprises place at lunch. The drill at lunch is to wait in line, then specify your 1, 2, or 3 items from a pool of 9, and they ladle them up for you. Soda and side of steamed rice, chow mein, or fried rice keep your items company. It is tasty and hasn't killed me yet, but it is not something that you will crave. It's busy, but seating is usually available. Their menu lists standard entrees in the $6-8 range, should you want to wait for more than a minute for your food to appear. Lunch is 10 to 3. I said, "no surprises", but they have a big window sign for Pho, which is surprising, I guess. It's very close to my work in First Hill, and we go there at least once a week. Here are four reasons: 1. Great pho. Especially good for cold rainy weather, of which Seattle never has. Their broth is very flavorful. Though I'd stay away from the chicken pho. 2. $3 Vietnamese Sandwiches (Grilled chicken or pork). It literally takes 1 minute for them to make. 3. Hot table offerings, $6.95 for two items plus fried rice or chow mein. There's always some vegetable (eggplant or green beans) with the fried tofu, teriyaki stuff, and sometimes just the green beans by their awesome selves with black bean sauce. 4. You can pour yourself a hot tea or water while you wait for your food. Not super excited about their specials because it's always the same, it's either Hong Kong noodles (noodles fried until almost crunchy, with soy sauce based vegetable/meat topping) or curry chicken (which is really a noodle soup). If it looks sketchy, it's not. I've never gotten sick from it. Though I am suspicious of hospital workers walking around in their shoe covers and lab coats, that skeeves me out. There's also a large upstairs area if it looks like there's no place to sit. read more

To banh mi or not to banh mi? That is the question. I work in First Hill which I think is a wasteland for culinary options and every day I have a mental debate about whether or not to trek down the hill (and then back up the hill) to the International District for a banh mi. A friend told me about this place and so today I ventured out over four blocks of flat ground! Hallelujah! I ordered a grilled pork banh mi and it was ready in less than a minute. Only $3 and it was really tasty! The people that work here are very nice and friendly. Now that I know about this place, I am definitely going to come back a lot for an actual sit down lunch. Time for a bowl of wonton soup to finally eradicate the slimy beasts in the alveoli (sounds like a bad Italian dish) Pho Saigon has a fabulous wonton noodle soup-the little doughy pillows are stuffed with shrimp, the broth is flavorful and hot-oh, ouch, and the noodles are tender and chewy at the same time(gotta learn their secret). The service is fast! Wonderful lunch, no more hacking(sorry tmi)Tummy was happy, and the chest bats have gone! Oh, great now the Batman theme is stuck in my head. Might come back for dinner, their General Tso's looks great. I used to think it was Colonel Tso's, hey that's it! KFC can do an Asian dish! I have been here several times for the daily special on the sidewalk board -- which seems to be the same always, i.e., hot chicken, rice, and a soda. It is satisfying, though for the price of $6.50 -- when the single soda is $2 -- the portions are quite modest. The food is like the Teriyaki next door. I do not order the Pho [soup?], as I want a more substantial meal. Next time I will order from the Menu, and see how a genuine dish compares to the Teriyaki. This place appears too try to hard to me, they serve a large variety of dishes from Vietnamese to Chinese to Japanese and end up mediocrely in all of them. My local pho place near my work is always a good place to stop in and get some classic tasty anise-y lovin'. I'm Vietnamese and pretty particular about noodle density, MSG-level, meat thickness, etc. - the things that the average person probably isn't thinking about when it comes to pho. So I'm almost reluctant to say that this is a good place. It's not in the ID, and it's reasonably clean with pretty decent service, so I'm honestly *surprised* that it's good. I'm used to attributing quality pho with areas of squalor. Keep in mind that I haven't had their other dishes, so I can't speak for them. But for roughly $9ish, you can get a very good bowl of pho with a balanced broth, solid quality noodles, and good quality meat. read more

I usually get beef pho and the meat and broth they use are really good. I've never tried ordering anything but pho here. Wait I lie, this one time I ordered one of their bánh mì sandwiches and was not impressed. To be fair, it was the one and only bánh mì I've had anywhere so I don't know whether theirs wasn't great or I'm just not a fan of bánh mì. Service is quick and efficient. Food: 5 Stars The vermicelli bowls and the pho are so delicious. They give a good amount of vegetables for both and the proportion of meat, vegetables, and starch is perfect. The pho broth is yummy and really helps on a nippy Seattle night. The milk tea is good, too! Location: 4 Stars Sometimes Madison is a little sketch, especially at night, but other than that, the location is great. It's about a seven-ten minute walk from where I live, so it's really convenient for pho runs. Price: 5 Stars The prices can't be beat. Pho Saigon is, by far, cheaper than all of the pho places that are on 12th Ave. You can't beat Pho that is less than $7.00 all day. Service: 5 Stars The servers are always accommodating. When I come in to this little restaurants with a bunch of my friends, the servers are really quick to accommodate for my larger party. **DISCLAIMER** This review is being written solely on my experience with their rice dish, and has nothing to do with their pho. Had to stop in the middle of my meal to write this review. I know Saigon does a pretty good job with their pho, but my god if you're going to put other options on your menu, at least try to make it so that the quality is on par with the rest of the food. I felt a little adventurous today so I decided to order a rice dish, their #33 House "Special." (Side note: Don't come here for their lunch special, it's just mass produced cheap and disgusting "Chinese" food. I walked in to pick up my order and saw completely dried out fried rice sitting there looking, well, dry and gross. But that's not the only thing that's dry...now onto this very "special" dish i ordered) If you're going to call something your house special, it better be the best damn thing on the menu. What this dish included was: pork skewer, chicken skewer, shrimp skewer, meatballs on a skewer, (I guess the special is that everything is stabbed with a stick), and an egg roll, all on top of an unnecessarily large portion of rice. My one word to describe this meal: DRY. Everything was dry/overcooked. The shrimp was chewy and tough, the pork and chicken were both dry and had burnt basil leaves stuck to each, which REALLY enhanced the flavor. The meatballs..I only got through 2 out of 3 of them. The last one was SO RIDICULOUSLY DRY that it was basically jerky. Couldn't even stab it with a plastic fork. Needless to say, i'm not coming back here again. I'm simply taken aback by the level of quality that it deters me from going there even for pho (there are PLENTY of other spots out there that are comparable if not better). And with the end of this review also comes the end of my appetite. bleh. read more

Just a note, I've only had two meals here, but I still look forward to visiting again. For my first visit I ordered pho with beef, tendon, tripe. Hot, delicious, fresh. For my second visit I ordered one of my favorite dishes, Vietnamese beef stew or bo kho. This meal could have been better. The broth was a little thicker than what I am used to. Plus, the meat needed more time cooking since it was chewy and rubbery, versus how I prefer it, moist and fork tender. It was tough to cut with a knife. The taste was great, the texture was not so great. I'll leave it a three stars, but I want to continue trying their menu. read more

I aasked about food ingredients and was told, I don't cook, I don't know. She could have asked the "COOK" what is white meat versus dark meat for food but that concept was too much for her. I came to love Pho Saigon during my time in Seattle. Is it the best Viet/Chinese food ever? Not really, no. Is it good? Most certainly. The eggplant with tofu... oh my lord, is it delectable. It's not healthy by any stretch since it's stewing in oil and soy sauce but... if I could freeze a big phreakin' cube of it and get it back down to SF, I would. The sweet and sour tofu is similarly worthwhile. The sauce: Do they make it there? Do they get it from a jar or a can or a plastic jug? Beats me. But it's tangy (sweet) and has a little kick to it (sour), so it lives up to its name... and the orange glow... it's so captivating. When you're working with people who are dying at Virginia Mason Medical Center a block away, you start to develop coping mechanisms to get you through the day. Among these coping mechanisms: being captivated by the hue of your sweet and sour sauce. The curry is typical of Japanese-style dishes, meaning that it's much more mellow and mild than you'll find at a Thai or Indian place. Had plenty of this, too. The color is less captivating; kind of a mustard-ish yellow, bordering on a 70's-ish green. But the taste and consistency are great. And then, finally, the sandwiches... oh, how I miss the $3.25 tofu sandwiches. Typical Vietnamese-style: mini baguette, marinated tofu, radish and carrot shreds and a house sauce that soaks into the bread. All for so cheap... There's a decent selection of American and Asian beers (Tsingtao, Chang Beer, Asahi, etc) if you're one of the few who are here for a reason other than breaktime at one of the local hospitals. They have a lunch buffet where you can select two items for $5.45: get the eggplant tofu, the vegetable chow mein, and some rice, and then lather it in Sriracha. The staff were actually friendlier and more engaging than the average person that I met up in Seattle, and I got to know the proprietor and her daughter and various other family members in the year I patronized them. Absolutely worthwhile. Much cheaper than the other options up Madison near the hospital, and pretty damned tasty, too. read more
