I love pho and spoiled living in San Jose to be surrounded by a lot of good pho spots. Ordered the regular size filet mignon pho with a side of onions. I didn't realize until I saw my receipt that they do charge 4% if you use a credit card. I asked for a side of white onions and didn't get a whole lot but was given more when I asked. The soup is deep and hearty, the meat was pretty good, though I've had better at other places. A regular bowl did not have enough noodles for me and probably should've paid $2 more for a large. The last time I came to the Lion Plaza food court, I knew before I even got into my car that I was going to end up at Bo Ne Phu Yen. However, if I hadn't already decided, there's a better than decent chance I would've ended up coming to Pho Pasteur instead. It's not to say that it's the only interesting place, let alone the most interesting, but the trays of pho I saw coming out of here looked super enticing! Of course, it didn't hurt either that so many Yelp friends have given this relatively high marks! Given the obvious limitations of being a food court stall, as opposed to a full service restaurant, it makes sense that Pho Pasteur's offerings are relatively modest by comparison. There aren't any starters/small dishes, vermicelli bowls, or rice plates for the most part (you can find them at the neighboring stalls), but the menu does have a bunch of noodle soups to choose from, including beef pho with various meat combinations, Bun Rieu, Bun Bo Hue, and several types of Hu Tieu. In addition, they also have Com Bo Buc Lac, Bo Kho (with noodles or French bread), and Bot Chien Gion. That last one in particular is something I don't see very often (in SF, anyways), which makes me regret not ordering it despite my cravings for the two things I did try. -- (#7) PHO TAI, DUOI BO - Beef Pho with Slices of Rare Steak, Flank, and Brisket...$19 (Large) While this looked more impressive than it tasted, it was still great. All three cuts of beef were flavorful (the brisket was best), the noodles had a nice bite, and the broth wasn't too fatty. Also, the oxtail I added (+$5) was pretty good, but it felt like it needed to be cooked longer (the meat wouldn't release). -- (#14) COM BO LUC LAC (Shaking Beef) - Shaking Cubed Filet Mignon Steak with Red Rice, Fried Egg, and Soup...$19 In hindsight, I wish I got the Bot Chien Gion instead of this purely for its uniqueness. Not that this was bad; this was actually pretty solid. The cubes of beef were tender and I liked the red rice, but the meat felt a little light on seasoning, though the sauce it came with made up for that. As much as I've enjoyed my trips to Pho Pasteur, one thing that did surprise me the first time I came here was how the menu prices were a little higher than I would've expected for a food court eatery. I get that things are more expensive these days, but I wouldn't have guessed a large bowl of pho would be almost $20. That said, they're well worth the money, given how loaded with beef my bowl of pho was and how good it tasted, so I wouldn't say the menu here is overpriced at all. In fact, I've obviously been back already and I wouldn't be opposed to making more in the future to try more. When we walked up to the stall (located in the food court of Lyon Plaza) -- a very nice lady took our order. My goddaughter wanted specific meats in her pho and they were able to customize which was nice. I ordered the Pho Dac Biet which is essentially "the works" -- yum. The broth was savory but the noodles were a tad bit over cooked for me (I asked for the fresh noodles and my goddaughter wanted the regular thin pho noodles). San Jose probably has pho restaurants in every corner but sometimes the best spot are hidden like this one. Pho Pasteur is located in Lion Plaza's food court. The food court has a ton of more options to choose from but whenever I do crave for pho, I come here. I always get pho dac biet which comes with a little bit of everything with wide noodles. The beef broth is pretty good and wide noodles are my noodle preference, I believe they have thin noodles as well. The ladies that work there are super sweet, they would ask me "what would you like to order? everything is good!" The only issue is finding a table especially if you're going on the weekend during lunch time. 11:30am-2pm is rush hour during the weekends. I recommend bringing sanitize wipes for the tables. I've been eating their pho for years. True to its name, their pho is very good. Recently, I decided to try something else on their menu, Bun Cha Ca Thia La. It's a rice noodle soup with fried fish paste and fresh dill. I love the taste! The portion comes with slices of fresh white fish, fried tasty fish paste, tomato, fried tofu and pineapple. My dad introduced me to this place one morning when we were looking for some morning pho at 8AM (they open at 8!), and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Trust me, especially since the pandemic, it's been hard to find restaurants that open that early. Being from San Jose, we've been lucky to have tried tons of great, authentic Vietnamese cuisine, and this place is no exception. It's located in an unassuming small food court in the corner of a plaza with other food options, but there are tons of regulars that come eat here specifically it seems, so you know it has to be pretty good. My dad's also gotten the pho for me togo before, and they package it really well-with everything separate so nothing is cooked/soggy. I'm pretty simple and my favorite kind of pho is pho tai because the rare slices of beef are my favorite. They definitely don't skimp on the meat either. I've tried both #1 pho dac biet (basically the combination pho-rare slices steak, flank, brisket, tendon, tripe) and #5 pho tai bo vien (rare slices steak, beef meat ball). My favorite was the #5 because I get lots of steak and meat balls, but if you like the different cuts of meat in your pho I recommend #1. Oh, and you know sometimes the meatball tastes almost *too* meaty? Their meatballs are surprisingly really good. You also have the choice between thin and wide/flat noodles, but my preference for pho is thin noodles. The broth is hearty, not too salty, and authentically aromatic. On the side, you get bean sprouts, jalapenos, basil, lime, etc. Their bean sprouts are pre-boiled (super side note/personal preference), but my family prefers that so the bean sprouts don't taste too raw in the pho. $15 for a regular size (#5) My dad likes to get bun bo hue (spicy beef noodle soup and beef ribs) or #9 bun rieu (crab paste, tomato, vermicelli soup). He likes them both and as seen in my photos, it's a hearty portion size with lots of toppings. $16 for a regular size (#9) The ladies there are super friendly (even at 8 in the morning), and my dad always asks for their complimentary hot tea, which is a nice touch. You can pay with cash/card, and they give you a buzzer for you to grab your meal. Condiments (sriracha/hoisin/etc) are self serve at their counter. Overall, this is a great pho place with friendly service and yummy homemade meals. There's also outdoor seating, if you prefer that. Support your local businesses!
