I was taught that great chefs are distinguished by the quality of their sauces, soups and ingredients. If so, Somerville's Pho n Rice has some of the best Vietnamese & Thai cooks in Boston because their pho, soups, entrees & beverages are the best we've ever had.** PnR also offers many vegetarian options along with 15 'create-your-own' entrees for those who prefer to design their own expertly-prepared meals. (Call PnR directly for specific health & dietary concerns since many dishes are prepared w/ or in the vicinity of seafood & nuts, etc.)
If you love pho, I highly recommend the Mi Honanh Thanh ($8.95) w/ sliced pork, shrimp dumplings, scallions, cilantro & onions, (I ordered mine w/ white noodles.) The aromatic chicken broth & dumplings were so delicious that they qualify for food orgasm status. Although pho is traditionally served w/ bean sprouts, lime & basil; PnR includes a piquant dipping sauce & a large stalk of basil so fresh & fragrant that it seemed as though it had just been harvested. (Happily, we had enough basil for the pho and 2 large dinner salads.) If you prefer soup as an appetizer but crave a similar experience, try the equally delicious Canh Xa Lach Xoong (Watercress Soup - $3.95) w/ sliced pork, watercress, scallions & cilantro. The portion is generous enough to satisfy a medium-hungry adult if (s)he also orders a salad and/or appetizer.
Speaking of appetizers, we enthusiastically recommend the steamed or fried Shumai ($5.95 for 8) which comes w/ a delicate spicy-sweet-vinegary soy dipping sauce. We also loved the plump & juicy Chicken Satay skewers ($5.95) which are marinated in coconut milk & Thai herbs and served w/ a cucumber salad w/ a light tart-sweet-vinegary dressing & a gorgeous Thai peanut dipping sauce. The Thit Lui (Chicken Teriyaki skewers- $4.95) which are marinated in Vietnamese teriyaki sauce w/ lemongrass & garlic & then charbroiled & sprinkled w/ ground peanuts is nearly as good. Also, If you like beef, know that my husband practically inhaled the succulent Special Short Ribs ($6.95) which are steeped in an excellent herb BBQ sauce and served w/ a cucumber salad & a Thai peanut dipping sauce. Guess he liked it. :-)
If you're a vegetarian or prefer lighter fare, try the delicate Gio Coun (Fresh Summer Roll - $5.95). Each roll is stuffed w/ several whole baby shrimp, fresh mint, lettuce & steamed rice vermicelli and served w/ a beautifully balanced sweet Vietnamese peanut sauce. The Crab Rangoon ($5.95) is also good here b/c it's flash fried and has a generous portion of cream cheese filling w/ real crab, diced onion & carrots & comes w/ a nicely tart sweet & sour sauce.
My husband & I both love Pad Thai ($8.95) and it's so delicious here that we've ordered it nearly every time. (Note: 'Medium spicy' on this dish is pretty mild, If you like your Pad Thai a tad spicy, order it 'hot' or tell them you prefer your entree on the thermonuclear side.) If you'd rather have a simpler dish, try the Bun Thit Nuong ($8.95 or $9.95 w/ a fresh spring roll) which features lemongrass-grilled chicken, pork or beef w/ steamed rice & a salad of lettuce, bean sprouts, scallions & ground peanuts w/ a house dipping sauce. We plan to expand our horizons going forward, especially since my husband loves yellow curries & fried rice, and I adore Pho & noodle dishes. Finally, If you like vegetables, the $2 side of steamed sliced carrots, snow peas, red peppers, mushrooms, baby corn & broccoli is the perfect complement to a healthy dinner - or tomorrow's lunch, We ordered it twice and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Most take-out beverages are a rip-off, but don't skip them here - they're worth every penny. The Thai Iced Tea ($2.95) is perfect - rich, sweet, smoky & addictive, and the Limeade w/ sparkling water ($2.95) is as refreshing as a cool breeze on a hot, sticky summer day. We can't wait to try the Fruit Shake ($4.95 - includes strawberry, pineapple, coconut, lychee & Jack fruit flavors, etc. - yum!) or the Vietnamese Iced Coffee ($2.95) which appeals to me in any season. PnR's beverages are tempting enough to order on their own, but why would you want to w/ such a deliciously diverse, reasonably-priced menu and well-executed food?
Finally, we'd like to include a well-deserved plug for Eat24Hours.com - an intelligently-designed, easy-to-use Internet & mobile application that facilitates hassle-free food delivery in many U.S. cities & towns for a small fee (~$2).
