I usually don't write up a review for a restaurant the next morning after I visit it, but sometimes the situation necessitates my attention. And it's not always a good situation...
Yup that's right I'm talking about you Pho Lovers!
You see, last night my girlfriend and I decided to check out Pho Lovers in Sunnyvale. Apparently this restaurant prided itself in being an "authentic Vietnamese kitchen," as this descriptor was displayed on multiple signs outside the eatery. One quick look at the menu and it seemed like Pho Lovers attempted to stay true to this motto. This restaurant served a wide variety of traditional staples ranging from Com Dia (rice plates) to Banh Xeo (Vietnamese crepes)! And of course they had plenty of options for Pho, with ingredients to choose from such as rare steak.
In terms of cost, Pho Lovers leaned heavily on the pricier end. Regardless of the fact that Vietnamese food in the Bay Area could get a bit expensive, this placed charged a ridiculous amount for most dishes. For instance, their combination rice plate was like a whopping $16! And, their Pho cost $10.5 for a small!!!
My girlfriend ended up ordering a small Pho Tai (with rare steak) and I got the Banh Xeo. Read below for my thoughts on the experience. Spoilers: It wasn't good.
--YOU CALL THIS PHO??--
Red alert!! Despite what a lot of Yelpers and friends have said, we honestly thought the Pho here was meh. First off, portion size was definitely "small." The bowl was pretty tiny and they gave my girlfriend a sad amount of beef. Furthermore, the broth was kind of off to say the least. Though the soup had the MSG flavor you'd expect from Pho, it also gave off a weird, tap water like aftertaste. Bleh, my girlfriend was only able to save it with juice from half a lemon. I guess the one positive thing about the Pho was that the beef slices tasted fine, and for that I give this bowl a 4/10. Not Pho people who like good Pho!
--BANH XEO, REDEEMING BUT STILL...--
WOW, I was actually pretty impressed by their Vietnamese crepe. Even though it took FOREVER for mine to come out, the experience was well worth it. And even though this plate cost me about $14, it was a beast. Portion size was HUGE compared to the Pho; the crepe was massive and they gave me a forest of fresh greens ranging from mint to lettuce. In terms of taste, the Banh Xeo was very crispy and flavorful. It was definitely one of the better ones I've had in a long time! However, I was a bit disappointed when looking under the hood. Though the pork slices were good and juicy, their shrimp pieces were MINUTE! It was like they decided to just put in baby shrimp from the freezer. Kind of a ripoff...but anyway, the Banh Xeo is a good option nonetheless if you're coming here. I give it a 8/10.
--CHILL ATMOSPHERE, NICE DECOR--
I loved the setting! The decorations - from the fake sky ceiling to the art - was definitely on point. If you're going for atmosphere alone, this place ain't a bad choice for a casual meal.
--DECENT SERVICE--
Overall, service was good. I enjoyed the fact that the employees were quite responsive, and the cashier also asked me how our meal was. Although, as I mentioned above, they took an exceedingly long time to bring out my Banh Xeo. In fact my girlfriend was nearly 80% done with her Pho before it came out!!! Furthermore, I also wasn't sure if they served the Vietnamese sate chili you always see at every restaurant; I asked them but they gave me chili oil (what??).
Besides the Pho and waiting for my Banh Xeo, the worst thing about this restaurant was probably the location. Since it was inside a small plaza (if you can call it that) on the intersection of Maude and Sunnyvale, parking was HORRENDOUS. Because it was situated next to a Hispanic grocery, there were limited parking spots specifically designated for each establishment. Luckily though, we were able to find street parking across the street at the park. However, if you want to be able to pull up next to a restaurant, this one might not be for you.
Since my girlfriend and I always find pleasure in sipping a nice bowl of hot Pho broth, it was very disappointing to find out that the Pho here was quite meh. I felt so bad for my girlfriend during our dinner, since she really wanted some good Pho. Might as well have called this restaurant NOT Pho Lovers because it was definitely NOT a good place for lovers of Pho! Nevertheless, even though I've seemingly pooped on this restaurant, there were still some positives. In fact, I did think the Banh Xeo was good, setting seemed appropriate, and their menu was pretty diverse. If you're willing to order something other than Pho and suck up the fact that your wallet will take a hit, this place might be okay. For that I give Pho Lovers a "Tolerable, sufficient for sustenance" rating.
