Inside the restaurant

I had dinner here with my parents, as part of their "try every pho joint in Ottawa" endeavour and we really liked it. So in Chinatown there are a lot of pho restaurants with really similar names all containing "Pho" "Bo" and "Ga" (In fact, there are even 2 different restaurants with the exact same name, very weird. There is a Pho Bo Ga 2 at 834 Somerset St West AND at 857 Somerset St West, so if you're meeting friends at Pho Bo Ga 2, you better specify which one!). I have to admit that I've been avoiding these places because I'm like "why don't you come up with more original names?" But then I realized that I would be missing out on like half of all the pho places in Chinatown. Anyway, my parents both got the Pho Thap Cam (Combination Pho). My mom got the small ($9.50) and my dad got the large ($11.50). I got what I usually get at pho restaurants if it's on the menu: Hu Tieu Nam Vang (Phnom Penh Tapioca Noodle Soup). I got a small ($10.50). The portions here are generous. I have a big appetite and small was sufficient for me. I probably could have eaten a medium, but I would have been uncomfortably full. My dad has a huge appetite and he admitted that the large was a bit much for him (although he finished it, lol). To think that they even have XL! My Hu Tieu Nam Vang was delicious. The tapioca noodles were chewy and the broth was fragrant. I got 2 large shrimp (peeled except for the end of the tail, and properly deveined), 2 slices of fried fish cakes, some ground pork, lots of slices of lean pork, and a quail egg. I love that the pork slices were lean. So many places give you fatty pork. I know that some people like that, but not me. I prefer lean meats. The soup also had some fried shallots, green onions and napa cabbage. I told them to hold the bean sprouts. The soup was tasty and I liked that they gave me a lot of toppings/protein. I did not run out of meat before I ran out of noodles. Yay! I hate it at other places where at the end I'm pretty much just eating noodles and broth because I ran out of meat. My soup also came with a shrimp cracker which was fried dough with a shrimp in it. It was super oily and greasy, so I didn't eat it, but my mom loved it. The shrimp in the shrimp cracker was not peeled but at least did not still have the head on it. I know that unpeeled and head on is the traditional way, but I prefer peeled and headless! It's too freaky for me otherwise, haha. My dad loved his pho. He especially loved the variety of meat in it. The Pho Thap Cam came with brisket, rare beef, cooked beef, beef balls (meatballs, not testicles, lol), chicken and a quail egg. He said he got a piece of tripe, but my mom who ordered the same thing said she didn't get any tripe (?!?) My mom enjoyed her pho too, but commented that the chicken was hard and chewy. My mom wanted some Che Ba Mau (a tri-coloured dessert with beans) but they didn't have any left :( Service was polite, efficient, and competent. The place is a bit small and cramped. Overall, I really liked my meal and I would rank this restaurant among the top 3 pho restaurants in Ottawa.

2.5 star Maybe I should not have give Pho-Bo-Ga La Restaurant a 2 star but my bowl of Bun Bo Hue ($9.50) Vietnamese spicy beef noodle soup was a little disappointing. I had way way better Bun Bo Hue but this was the only one I tried in Ottawa..... For $9.50 there was not much inside my bowl of noodle. 2 piece of raw beef and beef tendon each and they should just put in more noodle maybe for that price? I could eat 2 of those before I would be satisfied! I should not be eating Vietnamese food when I am in town. But I was dying for some hot comfort food and not much open after 10 pm.

#13 small, mix of different types of beef

Walked into this restaurant with a group of friends for a Friday night dinner. Not too busy when we walked in (it was around 7pm). We ordered - I ordered #13 in a small size, which was just under $10 before tax. It came with rare beef, beef tendon, beef brisket, and beef tripe noodle. The taste was okay, pretty good but nothing spectacular. I was a bit disappointed with my portion (small was really small, and only $1 under the medium size so I would recommend getting medium instead or large if you are really hungry). I chose #13 because I wanted a fair mix of all the different types of meat. However, I only had a small tiny piece of rare beef and just a lot of beef tendons (about four pieces?) which I am not too big of a fan of. I wish there was more variety in the portion of meat given. The place is very casual and you can walk in easily and stay there chatting with friends for a while, so I would recommend it if you are looking for an easy, quick meal with friends.

One of my favs! It's the blue one up the stairs! They make the special Phos really well. I especially love their bun no hue and the bo kho! Spicy Phos are my fav for sure! Their regular pho broth is on point too. They are quick with service and the place is cozy.

There are a lot of Pho places in Ottawa however this place is the BEST. It's a small establishment but don't let that sway you. I have been going almost every week for 17 years. This place dependable and consistent. Service is very fast and has a very loyal customer base. I will warn you that you will be back again and again. Portion sizes are big and the pho broth is top quality. Spring rolls and rice wraps are fantastic. Just go...you won't regret it.

Been coming here my whole life, I've tried almost every pho restaurant in Ottawa, but this one is still my favourite. Their broth is always very rich and flavourful and they give you a lot of meat. However, I would not recommend their Pad Thai.

Nice little place. Nothing fancy. Had a pulled pork spring roll and pho. It was good and good price. I would try other places near to compare before going back.

Hu tieu seafood soup... Very nice!

I am addicted to their vermicelli bowls. I add a little siracha and it's absolutely perfect. Bun just like in Vietnam!

The place was very steady but we got one of the few remaining tables. The menu has a lot on it and there is another, separate menu for specials. The complimentary herbal tea was nice and hot for a very cold day. Ordered was a pho for me, extra spicy and my friend got a beef and veg dish and they subbed her noodles for rice upon her request and accommodated her peanut allergy. The food was good, also. I ordered us shrimp spring rolls to start, 2 to an order. Very good. $6. The entrees... My broth was nice, albeit mild. Not that clovey taste I've experienced at other places. My pho had shrimp, beef and chicken. It was a house specialty so it only came in a medium size. This was fine as I ordered extra noodles for $2.50 to go and had some at home for dinner tonight. And, it will feed me for lunch one more time tomorrow. The containers were leak proof and the liquid survived the drive home. The staff were unobtrusive yet attentive and kind. Said to be family owned and that everything is homemade. I'll return! I love Vietnamese food and love supporting these places. I will avoid weekends though as I was told people are lined up at the door for seating. Was it the best I have ever had? No but it fit the bill and I'm glad I live close by as there are 100 other dishes I'd like to try.

Found this place on Yelp and a good star rating and I was happy with the results. It's located at a large strip mall quite a ways away in Barrhaven - hence the name. Grabbed takeout at 8:15pm and it was good. Got 2 orders of spring rolls which were still very crispy when we got back from the 20 min drive. A little on the greasy side but they had fried it up fresh. The house special combo had shrimp, beef, pork and chicken - a decent amount of protein and tasty. A somewhat small restaurant but still had a few tables of patrons at that time. The staff were nice. Plenty of parking.

While parking, I searched the strip mall to find a spot for me to order food. Barrhaven Vietnamese Restaurant popped out among all the other chains. I called in an order for pickup. When I arrived the place was moderately busy, but i was greeted immediately. The restaurant itself is very cute and cozy. I will definitely be back for lunch or dinner. As we were walking out, my children noticed someone eating pho and even requested we come back. I ordered the Vermecelli with chicken and I am so grateful I did. There was so much chicken and the noodles were perfectly cooked. Even the salad was green and fresh, along with cucumber that had been cut into tiny strips. It also came with two fried spring rolls. I prefer regular spring rolls, but they were delicious, very crispy and flakey. I prefer my vermecelli completely mixed, so I added the dressing, shut the takeout box, and shook it up. This made it easier to have noodles, greens, and chicken with every bite. I was too hungry to think to take a photo, but will add some on future visits. Definitely recommend and will absolutely be back!

I've been on the search for a good banh canh after having the most amazing one in Vietnam. However,…read moreit has been a hard search because most places don't sell this item so I came here just for this item. It was good compared to others I've tried but still missing a flavor in the broth. Service was quick. The guy who gave us the menus handed us with a paper to write down our order but didn't speak which was fine because we understood what we had to do. Everything was cooked as we ordered and the vegetable spring rolls were amazing and piping hot when they came out. We couldn't even eat/touch them until our main dishes came out. They were also quick to refill our waters as well. Interestingly enough, the guy who handed us our menus actually finally spoke perfect English when we went to pay. This was a good local spot which consist of actual Vietnamese owners/cooks. There was also a group of Vietnamese ladies who were definitely regulars.

The beef was really tender and flavourful. I did get a fatty and gristley piece though :( but on the most part, the beef was lean. The chicken was lean and a tiny bit dry, but still flavourful a tasty. The shrimp were medium sized and ok. Not that plump nor juicy, but for the price, not surprising. The spring roll was mostly wrapper and too oily for my liking. The rice dish came with fresh cucumbers and pickled radishes and pickled carrots. The vermicelli dish came with shredded lettuce and bean sprouts, which were underneath the vermicelli. It also came with pickled carrots and crushed peanuts. The fresh vegetables were fresh and the picked vegetables had a good sour bite to them. We also got a tub of fish sauce, which neither of us like, but my dad does, so I saved it and gave it to him on the weekend when I went to see my parents. I appreciated that they labelled the fish sauce with a warning to open slowly (with a smiley face, lol). Food is packed in styrofoam, which is not my preference for environmental and health reasons. Service was very courteous and efficient. I was told it would be 25 minutes. I returned in 22 minutes and they were just tying up the bag. Perfect timing! Note that the prices on their takeout menu (pictured) are outdated. My dishes were listed as $9.50 each on the menu, but I was charged $11.75, which is still a great deal. Prices have gone up as a result of the Covid Pandemic, so I get it. I would just suggest that they print new takeout menus. The restaurant is a little off the beaten path in Chinatown. Street parking only.
