Special Beef Pho. So delicious that my family started eating before I took a photo. That's why it looks small. Simply unbeatable!
Philip L.

Own by a friendly couple who used to run a Pho restaurant in Niagara Falls. They moved into this spot in early 2023 this year, which has always been a Pho soup place for almost 30 years. And they carry the traditions forward. Not much fancy decor. However, the Vietnamese food here is simply excellent. Very simple, and very straight forward. And this is the whole point for me to come here and test it out. I am pretty happy with their dishes. No doubt, the best is their famous pho. The broth was definitely authentic. Not just the taste, but also the soup temperature, the noodle texture, the topping tenderness, the scallion freshness, and the satisfying portion, all came well together. Honestly, I could not find it in Toronto. Even if I could have found one, I don't think the price could match here. Viet spring rolls were also tasty. Paired up well with their fish sauce. The portion was a bit small though. Another thing, they don't make butter chicken wings. What a bummer... Could have given them 5 stars if they had this item. No need to park at the meters. Plenty of 1-hour free parking on the alley around the corner. See my attached photos. If you crave pho next time around the neighborhood, try this place out. I hope you'll like it too! :)

I came here on a Monday around 11am it was a bit quiet until noon hit. We all ordered pho. I loved the clear broth. It was not very oily and had a nice beef flavour. The noodles were good too. However, they don't really give that much beef compared to other places I've been to in Markham / Toronto. Overall, decent pho for Ottawa! I'm glad I found a place for when I'm having cravings for viet food!

Complimentary tea. Pretty tea pot.

I had lunch here with my parents today. They love pho and their goal is to try every pho restaurant in Ottawa. They were happy with the pho at Pho Thu Do. They said it was comparable to most pho in Toronto. I'm not a huge pho fan, so I had something else, which I thought was good. We were greeted promptly and given our menus and a complimentary pot of tea. The tea comes in a really pretty teapot. It was sort of lukewarm though, not as hot as I would have liked. We started off with their spring rolls (4 for $7.25). Now I love the fact that the spring rolls are in the authentic Vietnamese style - as in the wrapper is made of rice and not wheat like Chinese and Thai spring rolls. Vietnamese style spring rolls are blistery and crackly and absolutely delicious when done properly. They are trickier to make, so most places just use the wheat-based wrappers. Kudos to Pho Thu Do for trying, but I found their spring rolls too oily and the filling lacked the advertised shrimp and pork, it was mostly vegetables and vermicelli :( I had the H4 Egg noodles sate soup (only comes in size medium for $9.99). The menu said that it comes with "shrimp, pork, fish balls and quail eggs". I did not see or taste any pork in my soup and I only got 1 quail egg. I did get 3 good sized shrimp and 3 large slices of "fish balls." The broth was spicy and flavourful, and I loved the flavour added by the deep fried onion pieces. I got an adequate amount of egg noodles. Overall, it was good. My parents both had pho (obviously). My mom had the #3 (medium rare and well done beef) size small ($7.25) and my dad had the #21 (The special: medium rare beef, well done beef, stewed beef tripe and beef tendon) size medium ($8.50). They both really enjoyed their pho. They said that the broth was fragrant and the meats tasted good and were properly sliced. They said that it's one of the more authentic tasting phos in Ottawa. I did not taste any, so I can't comment personally, but I did see a lot of oil floating around in the broth. Service was good. Staff were polite and food came out reasonably quick. Everything you need is on the table (extra cutlery, condiments, napkins, etc.), so they don't really check up on you and we didn't really need them for anything else. You write your own order on the paper they give you, then they come and pick it up. When you're done you pay at the cash register. Pretty standard practice for most Vietnamese restaurants. Decor is simple with some Vietnamese art on the walls. As with most restaurants in Chinatown there is no parking lot, you just have to park on the street. Some streets are paid metre parking, but some streets are free parking (3-hour limit regular bylaw applies). It's all free parking on Sundays though, yay! This place is a solid 3.5 stars in my books.

#13, with egg noodles instead of rice.

We had a later event coming up in the same neighbourhood as this restaurant, but we needed to eat before we got there, and we felt like having PHO. As you probably know, this is the right area to go to to find Vietnamese food. Mind you, PHO restaurants are cropping up pretty much everywhere these days! Ottawa is becoming more and more diverse; I love it! We ordered a couple of egg rolls (that were delicious!) and two different soups at about $7-$8 each, and the waiter was accommodating. I am not fond of rice noodles, preferring egg noodles instead. He offered to change up the noodles for a nominal fee of $1. That was worth it. The soup was tasty enough, an quite plentiful. And they provided a generous portion of greens and lime wedges to add to it. As for the decor, it's not very exciting; diner type tables that are worn out in the spots where the dishes sit. Only two waiters were serving; they might have been father and son. The older man kept coughing and wiping his nose, which really bothered me (yes, I know it's cold season). The place did fill up reasonably while we were there. The younger waiter sat at a table talking in Vietnamese with a patron sitting at a different table while she ate her meal. Although the restaurant served the purpose for this visit, I didn't feel this place had a lot of ambiance, and the soup IMHO was only "OK". There's a lot of competition out there these days, so I'm not in a hurry to go back here when I've enjoyed other restaurants better. So far, it just happens that I've enjoyed at least 1 PHO restaurant in Kanata. Maybe the bar is very high for PHO? Will definitely keep trying.

Clockwise: #17, 14, and 22

I ordered the special pho (#22) with all the various meats. I didn't find the broth extremely special (just some green onion and onion), but it's a classic bowl of pho. The service is really fast, our food came within 15 minutes. One order was mixed up but they fixed it in like 5 minutes! This place also accepts debit cards - bless.

I was craving pho while in ottawa, and so i went to try this place out. I ordered the number 22 which had beef only, and i got a piece of chicken and an egg quail..the broth is good though i do add more sauce and sriracha You get served a pot of hot tea as soon as you sit down. My friend got the vermicelli with grilled pork and shrimp which was good! And we also got some spring rolls, they looked house-made but was ok. I would having just shrimp in the rolls though, not a mix of shrimp and pork.

Broken rice with grilled beef and chicken

The broken rice and the Vietnamese coffee were mediocre. The meats were cut very thin (as seen in the picture) and not fresh. It was oily and tasted bland. It was priced around $15 for something that is of low quality. The coffee was bland too. I asked the waiter why and she was defensive without offering solution. Will definitely not go back.

Medium rare beef pho soup

We have a few staple Vietnamese places we go to and I wanted to try and expand our experiences a bit so as Pho Thu Do had a lot of good reviews we decided to try it out. While there are a lot of things I liked about it, there are a few things though that keep me from rating it higher. FOOD I ordered the shrimp and pork rolls with a medium rare pho soup while the missus ordered the deep fried spring rolls and the same soup. On the plus side, both rolls were quite good. The shrimp and pork rolls had lots of lettuce and mint in them which I like and the missus said the spring rolls were really good. On the down side, at least for the shrimp rolls, was the peanut sauce which was a bit too gelatinous. This of course can be personal taste but I prefer a peanut sauce that doesn't have that type of consistency. For the soup, on the plus side it smells great and the broth, while light, is good. On the downside though, I found it to be a bit heavy on the noodles and light on the other ingredients. One thing to note as well is that the menu is small as there isn't that many variations of soup and other items. SERVICE The service is good. There are lots of servers working so food is brought out and drinks replenished promptly. The only downside was that they brought out our soups at the same time as our appetizers. (Actually, for the missus, they brought out her soup before her appetizer). So the service could use some tweaking. OTHER Though it was quiet when we first arrived on a Saturday night, it started to fill up quickly. It seems like it is a popular spot to go to. While the norm in Vietnamese restaurants seems to be to give you hot tea, at Pho Thu Do they give you a jug of cold tea. I thought I would prefer hot but the cold tea was a nice change. Parking on Somerset can be a bit limited at times though there are enough side streets that you should be able to find a spot if you are driving. One final note is that they only accept cash and debit so no credit cards. -- While it may not have been as good as I was expecting, I don't think you can go wrong with at least trying it out. It's affordable with good food (especially the rolls). If Yelp allowed it, I'd give it 3.5 stars as it is definitely 'OK', with a few things keeping me from being a 'Fan'.

Pho, and spring rolls

With so many pho options in town it's hard to select your favourite but pho thu do is definitely one of them. Generous portions of meat and a flavourful broth that is not greasy keeps me coming back! The spring roll are decent, but you gotta to have the Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk, what a treat!

New location
Amanda B.

My family and I were looking to at Thu Do, but apparently the restaurant has moved! The old space between New Pho Bo Ga La has new owners, and the Thu Do restaurant is about 20 metres down the hill. The sign now reads "Pho Thu Do Restaurant", and the old space has signs posted in the window and on the door, redirecting you to the new place. 20 metres isn't very far, so don't be lazy and just walk the extra 2 minutes down the hill to the new location. I'm sad to say, we were all very disappointed. We were seated right away, but not given a menu for about five minutes. Generally, this wouldn't be THAT long, but that's much longer than we're used to waiting just for the menus, especially at Thu DO. In their defense, they were really busy, with every table occupied. I confirmed with the owner that this is, for sure, the new location, and he said the old building was old and small. The Vietnamese spring rolls were great - authentically flavorful and crispy, and taste of the pho was there, but the heat was not. The soup and tea were cold, and the service was slow, but now that I think about it, it's only been two days since the new location opened up, so maybe they're just adjusting to having so many more customers.

Well-done medium beef pho
Erin C.

The pho is delicious and the staff is super friendly. The fried spring rolls are a must. We also tried the vietnamese coffee with condensed milk (both hot and cold versions) and they were sweet and smooth. We tried the vegetarian and beef pho- and be warned the bowls are HUGE, we both got mediums and weren't able to finish them.

The place was very steady but we got one of the few remaining tables. The menu has a lot on it and there is another, separate menu for specials. The complimentary herbal tea was nice and hot for a very cold day. Ordered was a pho for me, extra spicy and my friend got a beef and veg dish and they subbed her noodles for rice upon her request and accommodated her peanut allergy. The food was good, also. I ordered us shrimp spring rolls to start, 2 to an order. Very good. $6. The entrees... My broth was nice, albeit mild. Not that clovey taste I've experienced at other places. My pho had shrimp, beef and chicken. It was a house specialty so it only came in a medium size. This was fine as I ordered extra noodles for $2.50 to go and had some at home for dinner tonight. And, it will feed me for lunch one more time tomorrow. The containers were leak proof and the liquid survived the drive home. The staff were unobtrusive yet attentive and kind. Said to be family owned and that everything is homemade. I'll return! I love Vietnamese food and love supporting these places. I will avoid weekends though as I was told people are lined up at the door for seating. Was it the best I have ever had? A little on the greasy side but they had fried it up fresh. The house special combo had shrimp, beef, pork and chicken - a decent amount of protein and tasty. When I arrived the place was moderately busy, but i was greeted immediately. The restaurant itself is very cute and cozy. I will definitely be back for lunch or dinner. As we were walking out, my children noticed someone eating pho and even requested we come back. I ordered the Vermecelli with chicken and I am so grateful I did. There was so much chicken and the noodles were perfectly cooked. Even the salad was green and fresh, along with cucumber that had been cut into tiny strips. It also came with two fried spring rolls. I prefer regular spring rolls, but they were delicious, very crispy and flakey. I prefer my vermecelli completely mixed, so I added the dressing, shut the takeout box, and shook it up. This made it easier to have noodles, greens, and chicken with every bite. I was too hungry to think to take a photo, but will add some on future visits. Definitely recommend and will absolutely be back!

The chicken was lean and a tiny bit dry, but still flavourful a tasty. The shrimp were medium sized and ok. Not that plump nor juicy, but for the price, not surprising. The spring roll was mostly wrapper and too oily for my liking. The rice dish came with fresh cucumbers and pickled radishes and pickled carrots. The vermicelli dish came with shredded lettuce and bean sprouts, which were underneath the vermicelli. It also came with pickled carrots and crushed peanuts. The fresh vegetables were fresh and the picked vegetables had a good sour bite to them. We also got a tub of fish sauce, which neither of us like, but my dad does, so I saved it and gave it to him on the weekend when I went to see my parents. I appreciated that they labelled the fish sauce with a warning to open slowly (with a smiley face, lol). Food is packed in styrofoam, which is not my preference for environmental and health reasons. Service was very courteous and efficient. I was told it would be 25 minutes. I returned in 22 minutes and they were just tying up the bag. Perfect timing! Note that the prices on their takeout menu (pictured) are outdated. My dishes were listed as $9.50 each on the menu, but I was charged $11.75, which is still a great deal. Prices have gone up as a result of the Covid Pandemic, so I get it. I would just suggest that they print new takeout menus. The restaurant is a little off the beaten path in Chinatown.
