Been coming here for years, there is the originally Pho Bo Ga La, this is the second location. Inside, seating along the wall, pictures all over. It's exactly what you expect, get in, they seat you, you write down your order on paper and shortly after your food will arrive. They provide complimentary tea & mung bean sprouts. Had to come back for their Thai soup (S11), let me tell you I crave this soup. It's perfectly spicy served with muscles and Shrimp. Served with noodles, lemon and herbs. It is oozing with flavour. It will warm you up from within. The spring rolls are also tasty, the sauce they serve it with is delicious. As we were wounding down our busy Canada Day long weekend trip in our beautiful nation's capital, we just really wanted some comforting pho to end the weekend. There were no shortage of Vietnamese places with rave reviews (Google) on Sommerset so we decided to try this place because it had a nice patio. We ordered some regular pho (rare beef & tripe), a pork chop and rice dish, spring rolls, couple of shakes and this spicy tomato pho. All the food was just ok with no real stand outs. The spicy tomato pho was not spicy at all and although the generous amount of meat and tomato chunks were nice, the broth really lacked flavour. It was a pleasant afternoon for an al fresco dining and unfortunately that's where it ended with NPBGLA. Not sure when we'll be back in Ottawa again but when we go, we'll be on a lookout for another place for our pho craving. read more

My boys and I have come to love Vietnamese food, particularly a nice fragrant bowl of Pho. This restaurant didn't disappoint. One of the few in the area that accommodates late night customers, it was easy to see it is a favorite. Even at 10pm on a Saturday night we were lucky to find a table. Enjoyed pretty simple and traditional choices, rice wraps, spring rolls followed by a standard rare beef pho and vermicelli plate with barbecue chicken and beef shared by the boys. This place was super popping when I went on Friday night, and after eating some of the food I can see why. In particular, their Phở Tái Chín Nạm Bò Viên (Rare Beef, Well Done Beef, Slightly Fat Beef And Beef Balls Rice Noodles) was one of the best pho broths I've ever had. Even my partner, who is Vietnamese agreed. There was a pleasant beefy funk that was complex with a variety of aromatics and spices. The portion sizes for this place are also pretty huge. I usually try to order bun rieu whenever I can, and this place's was at least alright (not the best I've had, but better than I was expecting). You honestly can't go wrong with Pho on Somerset. You can try many pho places around this area but I always seem to go back to this one! Thoroughly disappointed. This place is not what it once was. The small didn't fill me up, and it was the smallest size of pho I have ever seen anywhere. It literally had two pieces of tripe and three pieces of beef. What is this? Child size pho for over 10$? Ridiculous... Although it tasted fine, the portion sizes are getting more expensive and so much smaller. I'm not someone who eats a lot so for a small to not be satisfying for me, says a lot. Judging by reviews on Yelp and other platforms, it looks like the New Pho Bo Ga LA is the #1 most popular pho restaurant in Ottawa. Admittedly, I had been avoiding this place because there are so many pho restaurants with such similar names (some iteration of "pho, bo and ga." In fact there are two restaurants called Pho Bo Ga 2. One is at 843 Somerset West and the other is at 857 Somerset West. One is referred to as "the purple one" (843) and the other is referred to as "the red one" (857) since they have different coloured signs). I was very frustrated with the lack of originality in the naming of the restaurants that I just boycotted them all. However, as someone who loves food and loves trying new restaurants, I soon realized that such thinking was foolish, and I am now embracing all the "pho," "bo" and "ga" out there! (Which really just means "rice noodles," "beef" and "chicken" by the way). There's King, there's 1, and two 2's, (at some point there was a 3, but I think it closed down), and La, and Truc, and Mi, and new, and old, and I'm gonna eat my way through all of them!! LOL. So what do I think of the ever-so-popular New Pho Bo Ga LA? It was pretty good. Now I didn't have pho, but I had Hu Tieu My Tho (tapioca noodle soup from the Vietnamese town of My Tho). I got a small and it was $10. Small was a good size for lunch for me. It came with a good amount of chewy tapioca noodles, 2 big shrimp, a few pieces of surimi (artificial) crab, a few slices of lean pork, and about a tablespoon of ground pork and deep fried onions. The broth was flavourful and not too salty nor too fatty. I loved that the meats were lean, and the shrimp were big and properly de-veined. I was a bit disappointed that my soup didn't come with any fish cakes (but it didn't say that it would on the menu, so that's ok, but other places have fish cakes in this dish, and I love fish cakes). My soup came with some garnishes on the side (bean sprouts, mint leaves, a chili pepper, a wedge of lime, and another mystery green), but I did not use any. The restaurant is nicely decorated with Vietnamese art. Each table has a caddy of utensils and condiments. You get a pot of complimentary tea when you arrive. They give you the menu with a pen and piece of paper. You write your order on the paper and the server comes and gets it when you're ready. After you're done your meal, you pay at the cash register. Service was good. I was greeted right away when I entered and lead to a table. However, at places like these, it is typical that once you get your food, the server does not come to your table again. They don't check up on you. If you need something, you have to flag them down. I didn't need anything else though. Staff were polite and nice. My server even called me "Miss." LOL. This place is in Chinatown, so it's pretty much street parking only. Overall, good food and reasonable prices. I would go back. read more

My friends and I were so confused, there's 2 New Pho Bo Ga La, right next to each other! We walked into one of them to find it completely empty. We called our other friends to tell them we had arrived, but they told us they were also there already?! We walked out to see there was a separate building with the same name right next door... OK then! The place was really busy. The décor, tables and chairs are very dated. It was loud. I had a medium pho and it was tasty, but I don't remember it being any better than other places I've tried. The portion and price were standard. Got a large pho with rare beef, tendons, slightly fatty beef; pork spring rolls. The pho's broth is great: flavourful, has some depth, and well seasoned so it was not too salty. The noodles were al dente. Appreciated the big pieces of tendon, which I love. Was disappointed by the rare beef which did not come to the table rare so the meat became a bit dry after a while. The overall portion fits my description of a large: enough for one meal if you want to be very full, or enough to leave as leftovers for another, smaller meal. The spring rolls were on the smaller side, but they were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Unfortunately the wrapper is not the flakey kind that I've come to associate with Vietnamese-style spring rolls. Still enjoyed them though. The prices are relatively higher than surrounding pho restaurants. I enjoyed my meal but nothing was special enough to make this one of my go-to Vietnamese restaurants. read more

This pho place is worth a try for sure. I got the slightly fat beef with flank brisket and raw beef. Delicious. Only issue is we came and told the person we needed table of 8. It was 10:30pm roughly and he slightly rudely asked us if we needed our other table as four came first. We told him they're almost here and he seemed frustrated and we felt he was rude. We asked for the menu and it took long. I even went up and offered to grab the menu to help them and he asked me to wait. We shared tasty but greasy spring rolls, and each of us ordered a soup. These rice noodles were better than some I've had before, although I'm usually not fond of the texture of rice noodles (these were pretty good). I'm very glad that I ordered only a small! Whoa! I was really full afterwards!! The service was fine; certainly fast enough. However, the waitress never offered to refill our water glasses.Points were also taken off for the (presumably the waitresse's?) 2 young children who were waiting in the restaurant for their mother's shift to end, and apparently got bored so they began screaming when she was out of sight. On the upside, even the little girl said "bye" when we left! Beware: cash only!! Another point was taken off for this experience, due to the fact that - In this age of modern technology! - nowhere was it indicated that the restaurant does not accept cards of any kind - not even debit! We only found out when we went up to pay the bill. Then we were stuck pulling pennies and other loose change out of pockets and the bottom of my purse to cover it! Food: I've been on the lookout for a good pho place ever since I got to Ottawa and I have to say this place satisfied my cravings. I have been to 2 other pho places on near this place and this is by far the best one. I ordered #30 (Large) which came with every single beef option which was only $13.00 after taxes and before tips. My food came very fast. The portions are a lot bigger than the regular portions you get in Ottawa which I liked. The bowl had a lot of meat. The noodles were exactly how i expected pho noodles to taste. The broth was a tad on the salty side but other than that this will be my go to place for pho in Ottawa! Especially now that Thu Do has moved down the hill, New Pho Bo Ga La is a much more prominent pho restaurant in Chinatown, with such a prime location. There's been a lot of hype about Pho Bo Ga, but in my opinion, NEW Pho Bo Ga LA, is much, much better. It's always packed, and you can generally smell the broth all the way to the sidewalk, which is always a good sign when searching for tasty pho. They don't skimp on their noodles or vegetables, and if you drink a lot of the broth, it's even more filling, so a small or medium bowl is usually enough and only about $5. I always order a small #13, which comes with rare beef, beef brisket, tendon, and tripe. I always order rare beef because the broth is so hot that it cooks the meat inside the soup, otherwise it's a lot chewier. The broth is savory and tangy in the best way. The service is also very fast. I tend to switch between Thu Do and here, depending on what smells better at the time :) read more

Pho restaurants really exploded in Ottawa's Chinatown over the past 10 years or so, we went from really just having one (The Golden Turtle on Booth for those who remember it - now closed) to now having one basically on every corner for a good part of Chinatown. What adds to the confusion is they all seem to have variations of the same name. By the way, the reason for that isn't (just) lack of originality, these are names of famous Pho restaurants back in Vietnam, so they open them with the same name hoping for recognition from the community here, even though there's really no association with the original restaurant. I've tried pretty much all of them and this one is consistently better then the rest. What differentiates one Pho bowl from another is the broth (and how generous they are on the meat), because noodles and meat are basically the same everywhere (nobody in town is making fresh noodles). On most busy night, this place's broth is pretty good, not watery and tasteless like most other places. The rest of their dishes are also pretty good. read more

Ate here in August after realizing that Chinatown is more Vietnamese town ! Chose this restaurant as it seemed the busiest as we were walking up/down Somerset. From the outside, this place doesn't look like much but inside it opened up into a bright decent sized venue. Now I'm not sure if this is standard Ottawa ordering style, but you write down your own order with a pen and your server just collects it ?? Bizarre not having to tell your server what you would like ordered .... We had very limited interaction with our server as they simply bring you your dish and place it on your table and leave again. You also pay at the counter so you could get away with saying nothing to your server yet you still need to tip? Bizarre I say ... Our group tried a variety of dishes from rice to rice noodles to pho to egg noodles. Each dish was decent, nothing that was mind blowing but was good enough for a satisfying feed. I'm normally pretty picky about Vietnamese food as I grew up all my life having my parents' dishes. A few friends and I visited the city from Toronto and a friend took us to this joint. There's probably over 50 Vietnamese restaurants on this street, this one I can say tastes authentic. The prices aren't bad, in Toronto is a bit cheaper. A small bowl of Pho in Toronto is $6, its $8.50. Good flavour. Good options. If you like spicy, definitely try the Bun Bo Hue. read more

Honest review here. Please read before considering to try this restaurant. Never posted a bad review anywhere but my experience today was just the worst I could ever get. I am still shocked... I always go to this place because it is 10 minutes away from my house. I am a usual client and often bring my friends there or people who are from outside Ottawa and who want good pho. Their Shrimp spring rolls and beef pho is good and tasty. Soup might have some extra oil you don't want but it is good. Customer service ? Never been good, lady at the front is always moody but I would never bother much and will just give some tips for the waiter. Today I ordered the special fried rice. Was a huge mistake. Rice was literally soaked in oil. And you could smell that oil was used several times already. Very strong and unpleasant smell. We did not eat the plate, one spoon was enough to tell that plate was complete garbage. I am usually not picky with fried rice or food in general. The picture had some various ingredients, the actual fried rice only had some chicken and pineaple. (Almost none actually) I talked to the waiter and said we were not satisfied with the plate. It's kind to say that he was rude. The manager came to talk and it was even worst. He never could admit that fried rice had bad smell and would say it's "Thai food smell". I eat thai food almost every week and I can tell the difference between thai spices and rotten food. I did not expect him to take the order back. Apology would have really been enough. But he did not even bother saying sorry to his clients for poor quality. When they left, my friend saw them whisper and laugh at us. Saying things like "I am sure they will eat it". In the end we left the plate untouched. Waiter said "you know you still have to pay for this right, why don't you bring it to your family?" Ironically. I ignored the comment. Thought never buying food here again will be good for my wallet. I will never come back. He lost me and all the people I already brought there and will make sure I spread the word. I have never experienced such a bad customer service. Losing regular clients is probably the biggest mistake a restaurant could ever do. I hope you consider this review before trying it. Horrible customer service. Ordered take out - and remained seated while we waited (like every other time we've been there). Asked to move to accommodate customers dining in so we moved to a different seat where we felt we were more out of the way. The same staff approached us and asked us if we could move again. So we asked, "where would you like us to sit?" and we were asked to stand in the foyer between two doors and wait for our food. Needless to say, we cancelled our order and left. read more

There are tons of Pho places around it, and while the one next door had only two tables occupied, there were people waiting to be seated at New Pho Bo Ga La on a Thursday night. The food came out fast - I had the Curry Chicken w/Vermicelli and my two friends had Pho. Everyone was happy with their meal and their portions are plentiful. The rare beef pho soup is incredible! I love the assortment of chile pepper, basil, bamboo, bean sprouts and lime which are served on the side to make the soup to your taste. I throw in some of everything add some sriracha sauce and hoisin and I'm ready to go. The pork spring rolls are some of the best I've had in Ottawa. I have a limited personal exposure to their menu, but have dined with others who have ordered rice dishes, BBQ meats, and steamed vermicelli dishes. Every dish has been well received. The service is okay, sometimes slow, and often you have to ask for things which are usually offered, such as water. I recommend this restaurant and will definitely be back. read more

This place used to be my favourite but I can't say thats the case anymore :( Last night I got a medium pho to go, I noticed the price went up $1 which didn't really bother me that much but it makes me sad to think grabbing pho might someday become an expensive outing, who knows! The small pho here is now $8, medium $9, large $10. When I got it home, I finished it with ease, which kind of scared me because I normally can't come anywhere close to finishing a medium, I was concerned I stretched my stomach or something. Tonight me and a friend went after a night out and I sadly realized it was not me, but the sizes changed. A small is now actually probably half the size it used to be, a medium is now the size of an old small one. All for a dollar more than we normally pay :( They also gave us much less of the basil, cilantro and bean sprouts we normally get To get to the pho i still think its amazing. The broth is tangy and unbelievably flavorful, the beef is always extremely lean and high quality and they have the noodles down to a science - al dente, because who wants mushy noodles? i'm not going to lie, I can't see myself coming here again. Some pretty great Bun to be had here. Also very much enjoyed the bbq pork and the fresh veggies with vermicelli. I really enjoyed the food and the amount of food there was. The space felt a bit crowded. It was cash only. Water was not refilled. Great variety, fast service and clean appearance but if you go deep into the menu your selection may be less than perfect. First thing off-putting was the waiter asked us to place a handful of loose chopsticks in the condiment caddy situated on the table. We complied but commented that the chopsticks couldn t be very clean with all the handling. The waiter shrugged indifferently and asked for our order. We were four: two opted for Classic PHO but the remaining two... a chicken noodle soup proved a disappointment. The thinly sliced leg meat overcooked, stiff and relegated to a serviette on the side. The spicy pork bowl was insipid. If not for condiments provided the two latter meals would have resulted in bland. As for the two classic diners, happy as larks! Two out of four, not a good score. Lesson learnt? Go classic and all is tasty at New Pho Bo Ga La! Also, you just may want to bring your own chopsticks for cleanliness sake. read more

I'm a regular at New Pho Bo Ga LA. It's one of the better pho places on Somerset and you get the food quickly. They've been around for a long time so they could probably use a bit of an update. The other thing I'll mention is that you generally have to flag down your server if you need anything after getting your food. My go-to dish is usually the vermicelli and I wouldn't leave without ordering having some of the spring rolls. I usually get an extra order to take home. Overall it's a great little place. read more
