A big, inviting space!

Chez Lam has not been open that long, but I can't help wondering why we waited so long to go here?! We happened to be nearby, and chose to eat here instead of going to another place I had in mind. It was a Monday night, so the restaurant was really not busy - there were only 2 or 3 other patrons there at the same time as us, and in the end, we were the last to leave. I really liked the decor of the restaurant; it was clean and reasonably bright, and it was bigger inside than it looks from the front. It's a wide open space, uncluttered by columns or anything. The painting of the sky with birds flying through he clouds on the ceiling, lit with trayed lighting, was a nice touch. The food was pretty good, and the waiter was very attentive. After seating us at our table, he brought us a pot of tea which was included with the meal. Serving sizes were reasonable. We chose to start by comparing the fried spring rolls with the wrapped ones - these were done in rice paper and had shrimp. They were both tasty. For mains, the hubby had Pho, and I tried stir fry with chicken and cashews, which comes with sticky rice. There was plenty in this serving - I took half home for lunch the next day. The whole meal came to about $35.00, which I thought was reasonable for the amount of food we got. I will definitely keep this place in mind for future visits. And maybe I can even learn how to pronounce some of the names of the dishes?

I had dinner here with my husband and father-in-law. Overall, we really enjoyed it. Chez Lam just opened up 6 weeks ago. They are where Fortune Express used to be. At the time of the writing of this review, they don't have a website nor an online menu, so I didn't really know what to expect going in, but I'm happy we took the chance. I was getting over an epic sinus infection, so I didn't want to eat communally, so I got my own dish, but my husband and father-in-law shared their dishes. I got B13 "Bun Chez Lam's Signature." ($14.95) It's vermicelli noodles with grilled pork, beef, chicken and a spring roll. My husband and father-in-law shared the BX10 Sauteed beef with vegetables, comes with white rice ($13.95) and the MX5 Crispy egg noodles with shrimp, chicken and vegetables ($15.50). My vermicelli bowl was HUGE! It had vermicelli, shredded lettuce, julienned pickled carrots, julienned pickled daikon radish, matchsticked cucumbers, beansprouts (which I picked out, I forgot to tell them to omit these), a spring roll, and so much meat (beef, chicken and pork)! It was topped with crushed peanuts and green onions. OMG, they were so generous with the meat. I love protein, so I was loving it. The meats were really flavourful and tasty (I loved the marinade that they used). My only complaint is that some pieces were not as lean as I would have liked. There were some pieces that were fatty and gristly, but most pieces were good. The spring roll was small, but it was full of ground meat, carrots and vermicelli, and it was crispy (and not too oily). Vegetables were fresh, and the vermicelli was perfect (not too mushy, not too dry). They brought me a small bowl of fish sauce, but when I told them they could bring it back to the kitchen as I don't eat fish sauce, they brought me a slightly sweet soy-based sauce which was delicious. I usually just eat my vermicelli dry, but this sauce was excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. Now I have a very large appetite but I had to tap out about 3/4 of the way through and bring home the leftovers. This has never happened to me at any restaurant when I order a vermicelli dish! So awesome! I would definitely order this again. I didn't have any of the beef or noodle dishes, but both my husband and father-in-law said that they enjoyed it. This place has a liquor license. Staff were very nice. They were soft-spoken and so polite. The place is large and clean looking. I love the clouds and birds painted on the ceiling. Makes it feel like you are dining al fresco (without having to deal with UV radiation, precipitation, pollution, etc.). You get a 10% discount if you pay cash. The restaurant is in a strip mall on Hazeldean at Castlefrank (next to Popeye's the supplement store; same strip mall as Dollarama and Rockin' Johnny's). There's lots of free parking. It wasn't too busy when we were there on a Saturday evening. Kanata needs more varied dining options, so I hope that they do well. I love supporting small local businesses like this one. I think they need to set up a website. They have a Facebook page, but there's not much on it. Their specialty is Vietnamese food, but they do have a few Thai dishes. They also have several vegetarian dishes. If you like Vietnamese food and you happen to be in Kanata, you should check out Chez Lam :)

We had the pho and I can say that it was Better than most places in Ottawa. I wouldn't hesitate to order from there again if I was in town.

Authentic Vietnamese Pho House - B009 vermicelli bowl with grilled shrimp and spring roll

The place was very steady but we got one of the few remaining tables. The menu has a lot on it and there is another, separate menu for specials. The complimentary herbal tea was nice and hot for a very cold day. Ordered was a pho for me, extra spicy and my friend got a beef and veg dish and they subbed her noodles for rice upon her request and accommodated her peanut allergy. The food was good, also. I ordered us shrimp spring rolls to start, 2 to an order. Very good. $6. The entrees... My broth was nice, albeit mild. Not that clovey taste I've experienced at other places. My pho had shrimp, beef and chicken. It was a house specialty so it only came in a medium size. This was fine as I ordered extra noodles for $2.50 to go and had some at home for dinner tonight. And, it will feed me for lunch one more time tomorrow. The containers were leak proof and the liquid survived the drive home. The staff were unobtrusive yet attentive and kind. Said to be family owned and that everything is homemade. I'll return! I love Vietnamese food and love supporting these places. I will avoid weekends though as I was told people are lined up at the door for seating. Was it the best I have ever had? No but it fit the bill and I'm glad I live close by as there are 100 other dishes I'd like to try.

Found this place on Yelp and a good star rating and I was happy with the results. It's located at a large strip mall quite a ways away in Barrhaven - hence the name. Grabbed takeout at 8:15pm and it was good. Got 2 orders of spring rolls which were still very crispy when we got back from the 20 min drive. A little on the greasy side but they had fried it up fresh. The house special combo had shrimp, beef, pork and chicken - a decent amount of protein and tasty. A somewhat small restaurant but still had a few tables of patrons at that time. The staff were nice. Plenty of parking.

While parking, I searched the strip mall to find a spot for me to order food. Barrhaven Vietnamese Restaurant popped out among all the other chains. I called in an order for pickup. When I arrived the place was moderately busy, but i was greeted immediately. The restaurant itself is very cute and cozy. I will definitely be back for lunch or dinner. As we were walking out, my children noticed someone eating pho and even requested we come back. I ordered the Vermecelli with chicken and I am so grateful I did. There was so much chicken and the noodles were perfectly cooked. Even the salad was green and fresh, along with cucumber that had been cut into tiny strips. It also came with two fried spring rolls. I prefer regular spring rolls, but they were delicious, very crispy and flakey. I prefer my vermecelli completely mixed, so I added the dressing, shut the takeout box, and shook it up. This made it easier to have noodles, greens, and chicken with every bite. I was too hungry to think to take a photo, but will add some on future visits. Definitely recommend and will absolutely be back!

I've been on the search for a good banh canh after having the most amazing one in Vietnam. However,…read moreit has been a hard search because most places don't sell this item so I came here just for this item. It was good compared to others I've tried but still missing a flavor in the broth. Service was quick. The guy who gave us the menus handed us with a paper to write down our order but didn't speak which was fine because we understood what we had to do. Everything was cooked as we ordered and the vegetable spring rolls were amazing and piping hot when they came out. We couldn't even eat/touch them until our main dishes came out. They were also quick to refill our waters as well. Interestingly enough, the guy who handed us our menus actually finally spoke perfect English when we went to pay. This was a good local spot which consist of actual Vietnamese owners/cooks. There was also a group of Vietnamese ladies who were definitely regulars.

I got takeout at Huong's for my husband and I and overall we were happy with our meals…read more I got the Grilled beef, grilled chicken and spring roll vermicelli ($11.75) for myself and the Grilled beef, grilled chicken and grilled shrimp on rice for my husband ($11.75). The beef was really tender and flavourful. I did get a fatty and gristley piece though :( but on the most part, the beef was lean. The chicken was lean and a tiny bit dry, but still flavourful a tasty. The shrimp were medium sized and ok. Not that plump nor juicy, but for the price, not surprising. The spring roll was mostly wrapper and too oily for my liking. The rice dish came with fresh cucumbers and pickled radishes and pickled carrots. The vermicelli dish came with shredded lettuce and bean sprouts, which were underneath the vermicelli. It also came with pickled carrots and crushed peanuts. The fresh vegetables were fresh and the picked vegetables had a good sour bite to them. We also got a tub of fish sauce, which neither of us like, but my dad does, so I saved it and gave it to him on the weekend when I went to see my parents. I appreciated that they labelled the fish sauce with a warning to open slowly (with a smiley face, lol). Food is packed in styrofoam, which is not my preference for environmental and health reasons. Service was very courteous and efficient. I was told it would be 25 minutes. I returned in 22 minutes and they were just tying up the bag. Perfect timing! Note that the prices on their takeout menu (pictured) are outdated. My dishes were listed as $9.50 each on the menu, but I was charged $11.75, which is still a great deal. Prices have gone up as a result of the Covid Pandemic, so I get it. I would just suggest that they print new takeout menus. The restaurant is a little off the beaten path in Chinatown. Street parking only.
