We visited this viet restaurant on recommendation of a friend. Seems to be a family run place. The server was attentive and quick with taking our orders/getting water/tea. We got the special beef noodle soup. The broth tasted clean and not overly seasoned with MSG. I feel like there could have been more meat though for a large size. Noodle were plenty and cooked well. 3.5/5. The vermicelli bowl with pork, spring roll and veggies was big. Lots of fresh veggies, lots of seasoned grilled pork. Only minor complaint is the spring roll felt like like a typical Chinese spring roll than a viet deep fried roll. Otherwise, really good. 4/5. Price point feels a bit high at around 22$ a dish after tax but probably on par for the area and cuisine. read more

Ah, the taste of childhood. Amongst the many cities I have been over the years, Ottawa has been one of my most cherished and Pho 99 is a central part amid all those memories. This restaurant has been a favorite place of mine for almost 20 years and ever time I visit Ottawa, I make the deliberate effort to visit. From those days taking shelter from the bitter winter cold after a long day skiing with my dad to those late night sojourn seeking solace after a long day studying as a university student; a warm, comforting bowl of Phở Tái Gân Sách (Vietnamese beef noodle soup with with rare beef, soft tendon and tripe ) loaded up high with bean sprouts has always proved to the perfect meal to cheer me up! It's hearty, warming, brothy, savory and packed full with unami! What's not to love? In terms of the atmosphere, it feels like a second home. Unpretentious and homely, the interior feels like my grandma's house. The people are just as welcoming and almost feels more like a family friend's home that you are being invite to. A particular memory for me was when I stepped in the first time in a decade after coming back to Ottawa as a young student studying at Carleton University. That day, the matriarch of the business (family-owned) somehow recognized me and asked where my father and why it had been so long since I last came in. Me and my father may have been regulars coming twice a week for 6 years but it was a truly special feeling to be recognized even after eight years. So glad that we ended up coming to this pho restaurant! Food, service, and ambiance were great. It's a family-owned restaurant that has been open since the late 1980's. The restaurant does have parking so you do not have to worry about finding street parking. I did not take pictures of the food, but we ordered #1 (spring rolls), 3 (egg rolls), 6 (combination pho), and 7 (beef pho). Oh! The restaurant offers Jasmine mint tea to start. Terrible Terrible Terrible!!! We don't eat pork, when we order the food, we confirmed with the waitress /owner many many times, but in the end we are served pork. We complained to the waitress/owner, she said not her fault, the chef in the kitchen made a mistake, and we won't get charged, in the end, she changed her mind, and ask us to pay. This is a terrible service, terrible attitute, no respect to the religious and culture, and force us to pay after the lunch is ruined by the mistake of the "kitchen". I have been coming here since the 1990's and was brought bu a Vietnamese coworker. Moved away in 1999 but every time I come back it is always a stop for dinner. My last visit was in June of 2024 and we had 2 bowls of Beef Noodle Soup and salad rolls. It was exactly how I remembered it. Service is very laid back but do not hesitate to speak up. I had lunch here recently and overall it was good. I had the grilled beef and spring roll vermicelli ($13). I asked for no bean sprouts and no fish sauce and my dish came without them. The grilled beef was nicely marinaded and very flavourful. My only complaint is that it was a tad too gristly for my liking. However, it was much leaner than some other places, so I can't complain too much. I liked the fragrant deep fried shallots sprinkled on top of the beef. They added a nice crunch to the dish. I was a bit disappointed to see that the spring rolls were made of the wheat-based wrappers, instead of the more traditional rice paper wrappers. Nonetheless, the spring roll was hot and crispy and filled with taro, vermicelli, carrots, and onions. There might have been a bit of pork in it, I'm not really sure. My meal came with shredded lettuce, pickled julienned carrots, and strips of cucumber. I prefer my cucumber cut into smaller/thinner strips, but that's just my personal preference. The vermicelli was the thin type and it was nicely cooked. Overall, I enjoyed my meal. Service was ok. I was led to a table and given a menu with a pen and paper. I was then brought a pot of complimentary tea. After I wrote down my order, the server came by to pick it up. Then he brought out my meal and I asked for a glass of ice water. After he brought me my glass of water, he never came to the table again. My water glass was empty for most of my meal :( At least I had a whole pot of tea to drink, lol, but I found the tea a bit bitter. After I finished, I paid at the cash register. So service was functional, and never rude nor inappropriate, but not exactly friendly in my opinion and lacking in the usual niceties. No checking up on you, and no "how did you enjoy your meal?" I was thanked when I paid and tipped though. This restaurant is a little south of the main Chinatown drag. There is free parking in the lot across the street, but there's also plenty of free parking on the street (3 hour limit as per usual by-laws). read more

I'm not sure why reviews are bad on Yelp. I was brought here for my first time by a Vietnamese friend who said that he always goes with friends and family. I had the best pho I've ever had in Ottawa that night (and I've been to Hanoi where it originates from). Their bunh is amazing and I often take it to go. Pho 99 is the best Vietnamese Restaurant in Ottawa. The prices are generally lower than others and the food quality is notably better. The noodle, rice dishes and soups all come with more meat and vegetables than other restaurants. The spring rolls are consistently good. The cook bbqs the meat perfectly. And the coffee with condensed milk is hot and strong. I've been eating there 2 or 3 times a week since it opened 10 years ago and it still surprises me how good it is. read more

My GF always wants to go to her favourite Pho place (Pho La Fusion) since she is sure that nothing will compete. I on the other hand always want to be adventurous and try somewhere new. This experience will certainly discourage me at least for a little while. The ambience is awful, weird Christmas decorations and a funky, slightly sexual wall mural on a strangely placed stage. That being said, its pho and I don't really care about how the restaurant looks as long as the food is good. Unfortunately the food was pretty bad. The rice rolls had way to much lettuce and the rice paper was cooked a bit too long. I had the standard rare beef pho although I did experiment with the spicy broth. The soup had a bit of a weird smell and as another poster noted it was actually quite oily. The noodles were meh and if that wasn't enough, as a further affront the beef was already cooked when it came out. The GF had the bun and she said it was decent although the chicken was very low quality and I noticed her spit out a few pieces. Please don't go here. With so many wonderful pho places to choose from, I can't help but wonder how they stay in business. read more

Meh, was my final impression of Pho 99. And in the land of the pho place, meh is just not good enough. The place is sorta odd on the inside, it looks as though they are trying to go for a diner feel, but for pho. They also had Christmas decorations still up, which was odd. In terms of the pho, I found it very greasy. The broth, while flavorful had an odd texture. The noodles were nothing to write home about and the ingredients (I had seafood) were average. Plus they added an odd cakey type thing that I couldn't identify, and it wasn't very tasty and had a gross texture. The service was OK, nothing to write home about. The moral of the story is, in chinatown you need to stand out if you are a pho place, and this place just doesn't stand out. read more

Been here every time I visit Ottawa. People are friendly, pho noodle and soup are good! I'm not sure why this place has such a low rating. My guess is because they don't use msg as much as other vietnamese pho places. read more

The hours are quite accommodating, 10am until 5am, everyday! The location is on Somerset between Booth and Preston and has lots of parking in a lot as well as on the street. Service is always quick, and straightforward- the turnover in this place is fantastic! Takeout dishes are quickly prepared and the noodles, fixings, and broth are thoughtfully separated from each other to prevent overcooking while you bring your dishes home. I have had Pho all over the place, and the Pho here is as good as any I have had, and better than most. Starting with deeply developed, flavorful broth, generous portions of beef, perfectly cooked noodles, and heaps of all the traditional fresh trimmings like Thai basil, chilies, limes, and sawtooth herb. Best pho in Ottawa. The place looks dingy, but the pho (go during the day for best broth) is by far the best in Ottawa. Since I tried it a few years ago (introduced by a Vietnamese friend who grew up eating pho every day back home (who also says its the best in town)), it's the only place I go for pho. The difference is in the broth. Other places seem tasty but you quickly realize its just the fish sauce, which leaves an aftertaste and makes you feel thirsty.
