TLDR: The Combination (cold cuts) Banh Mi was decent, but the bread was a bit stale, and was more like submarine bread instead of traditional banh mi baguette. However, service was lovely, much better than what I've experienced at My Hang. So my parents and I were craving some banh mi. Our usual place, Co Cham, was closed for vacation. As was our back up, My Hang (yup, both banh mi heavyweights were closed for vacation at the same time!). So we headed to Pho Bo Ga King to try our luck. They also had the "buy 5 get 1 free" deal (like their banh mi competitors) and their "Combination Banh Mi" (mixed cold cuts) was the same price, $6 each. We bought 10 and got 2 free. My husband, brother and sister-in-law also love banh mi, so we were getting some for them too. We asked for the vegetable toppings on the side so the banh mi wouldn't get all soggy. They were happy to accommodate. The meats were good, although the BBQ pork was too fatty for my liking. The bread however, was a bit stale. Not incredibly stale, but not fresh. Also the bread was not the traditional crispy baguette, but rather a submarine-type bread. The vegetable toppings were cucumbers, pickled carrots, pickled daikon, and cilantro. No chili peppers. They gave us a good amount of toppings. My mom also got a Che Ba Mau (tri-coloured Vietnamese bean dessert) $6.50. She enjoyed it and said the ingredients tasted fresh. Service was great. Very friendly. Much nicer than the banh mi competition in Chinatown. The restaurant itself is nice with lots of seating. They also sell bubble tea and Vietnamese coffee. And of course pho, vermicelli and rice dishes, as well as Bun Bo Hue. I was delighted to discover they sell my 2 favourite noodle soups: Hu Tieu Nam Vang and Hu Tieu My Tho. My friend and I were exploring Chinatown and stumbled across so many pho places. We decided to give Pho Bo Ga King a go as we saw through the window they had big portions and it looked really cute on the inside. When you walk in, you should seat yourself and then the server will come and check your ID and proof of vaccination. The interior is very cozy and you can just tell that it's going to be good food. The menu is quite big, and the prices are pretty good too. They have bowl sizes ranges from S to XL. The small is $12.95, Medium $13.95, Large 15.95 and Extra Large $18.95. My friend got the Pho (#15) and Beef rice wrap and I got shrimp wonton and rice noodle. I actually also ordered pork dumplings but forgot to take a picture. The food was really good. I like how the flavour of the broth isn't too salty or strong! The noodles were really yummy! The dumplings had good crunch and flavour as well. All of the food was very warm when it came out to us. I got M and my friend got S. I think next time I'll get the S, not because the M was too big, but because I think the different in portion sizes came down to the soup, rather than more noodle. I also kind of wish My order came with more wontons. Service wise, not bad. There was only one server so I felt pretty bad for him. It wasn't slow service but it wasn't super efficient either. However, I do like how the server kind of just let you be, he didn't come out to talk to us which was nice as we just had a very comfortable conversation and didn't feel rushed at all!!! Pho King has always been one if my favorite spots for noodle soup. Their broth was great, give a good quantity of protein and noodles, and they offer king size! However, the last two visits have been lacking. Although it only takes a couple of seconds to write down our order, it took 10 minutes for a server to come and grab the sheet. Lately I have a Banh Mi craving, last night I was near this place and it started raining since I skipped dinner I said let's stop for a sandwich(I didnt want something heavy). The place does have an authentic vibe so I was very excited ordering my usual Tofu/Veg Banh Mi. That was the WORST Banh Mi I ever had, how bad? I had to add Sriracha sauce for flavor. I've been here many of times, but this time I decided to order via Uber Eats. While the delivery of the food was fast, the portions didn't look right. Only half the container was filled with my fried rice, while the shrimp wontons, advertised as 7, I only got 5. The rice tasted stale as well. Well, I only came to this place with my friends since this place was famous for a Extra Large Size of Pho. It is a decent place to have a bowl of pho. The broth has a lot tones in term of the meat they use in the broth. Portions are reasonable and the prices are very reasonable. The smoothies are very tasty despite the lack in size . On cold damp nights, I enjoy Pho. Tonight was that night, desperate for pho delivery I relied on Yelp to direct me to a spot. It's been almost an hour later and I haven't received my order. When I called the restaurant to tell them "I was still waiting for my food", I was greeted by a lady who honestly didn't care about my concern. Her sole interest was getting me off the phone, since apparently someone had just left to deliver my order. I rarely order Pho for delivery. But if I ever do in the future, it will NOT be from this establishment. My soup still hasn't arrived, but when it does... It better be amazing! Stay tuned! UPDATE: my food took an hour and twenty minutes to arrive. (Normally pho takes 15 minutes at a restaurant). The pho was nothing special and I do not recommend the peanut sauce it's one of the worst I've tried. Horrible. Ordered bun which had hair in it and the shrimps were spoiled which had been masked by sprinkling vinegar on them. Lots of rice noodles but barely any toppings. I called them and was given no apologies and the guy answering the phone was actually smirking and laughed a little which got me even more furious. I was told to bring it back (as they don't believe that you didn't eat their garbage,) had to wait twice for my food and drive back to the restaurant. All I heard was: "Does it look good?" Usually I have a great time here but the last time I ate their pho I got food poisoning and my bf had diarrhea from ordering the chicken and beef plate. The pho broth was lacking in flavour. I used to come here all the time. They have great prices and good food. At the time my only disappointment was that if you order a smoothie to go you would pay the full price for half of a smoothie. I should have just bought bubble tea. However in the past couple months I have gone twice for a late night meal and both times the same local beggar came in and bothered every table for money. As the beggar was asking other people, we asked the waiter to ask the beggar to leave and he was like "sorry I can't do anything about it". Luckily a muscular guy told her to leave and she did. One of my favourite pho places in Ottawa. The sizes and prices are good (although I find the prices have been going up in general). There are lots of table spaces and they have a large menu with plenty of options. I specifically only order pho. The one I order is #30 and usually in a small (~$8.50). This is the only restaurant where they offer a wide variety of topping combinations which include quail eggs! The broth is nice and the noodles are cooked well. This was HANDS DOWN the WORST restaurant I've ever been to in my entire life. Genuinely revolted at how the under-cooked the chicken was and the stale noodles that they used in my food were. Probably one of the worst Vietnamese/Thai restaurants we have ever been too. Decided to try since we were just there. The Pad thai's lacked flavour as did the pho noodle dish. The spring rolls filling was very disappointing. Service was just ok. Getting water filled was slow and painful. Be prepared to pay an added $0.50 if you use a credit card.
