It's 6pm, I've just worked out, and could eat a horse! Dinner is definitely on my mind. Thankfully I see the recently opened Saigon Pho in the distance. Since my pho experiences this week were sub par, I decided to give it another try at a new establishment. I walk in to a well decorated and clean restaurant (not surprising since it just opened). The menu is extensive and offers noodle, pho and wok dishes. I order my usual and am happy to report that Saigon Pho has redeemed my Pho expectations. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, although all menu changes come with an additional cost. Overall, the experience here met all my expectations and I will return with friends soon.

Tonkotsu ramen - still in my opinion the best ramen in Ottawa hands down

Came back for more tonkotsu ramen...... amazing!!! They make their broth in the restaurant overnight.... it shows - I brought my brother in law who's been to Japan 3 times..... he said that their ramen was as good as the stuff he had in Japan.

    Large combo pho

The pho here is top notch. The broth is really made well with a very appealing scent and taste. It's one or two dollars more pricey than other places around like Ha Noi or Truc Lien, but the portion is pretty large and the combo I ordered gave a lot of meat. Unfortunately, my friend's vermicelli noodles were too short, that she couldn't pick it up with a fork. It seemed overcooked, but after we complained, the waiter said it was supposed to be like that. The restaurant looks pretty nice with cool decor string down from the ceiling and it's nice and clean since it's new. It also has AC which is really nice because pho can get you really warm. Would come again to this place just for their pho.

Was craving Pho, but not wanting to drive to Somerset. It was pretty good, better than some of the other Vietnamese places in Orleans.

The place was very steady but we got one of the few remaining tables. The menu has a lot on it and there is another, separate menu for specials. The complimentary herbal tea was nice and hot for a very cold day. Ordered was a pho for me, extra spicy and my friend got a beef and veg dish and they subbed her noodles for rice upon her request and accommodated her peanut allergy. The food was good, also. I ordered us shrimp spring rolls to start, 2 to an order. Very good. $6. The entrees... My broth was nice, albeit mild. Not that clovey taste I've experienced at other places. My pho had shrimp, beef and chicken. It was a house specialty so it only came in a medium size. This was fine as I ordered extra noodles for $2.50 to go and had some at home for dinner tonight. And, it will feed me for lunch one more time tomorrow. The containers were leak proof and the liquid survived the drive home. The staff were unobtrusive yet attentive and kind. Said to be family owned and that everything is homemade. I'll return! I love Vietnamese food and love supporting these places. I will avoid weekends though as I was told people are lined up at the door for seating. Was it the best I have ever had? No but it fit the bill and I'm glad I live close by as there are 100 other dishes I'd like to try.

Definitely worth the drive to St. Joseph Blvd, is Pho Truc Lien. Tucked away in a bungalow across from Place D'Orleans Shopping Center, this restaurant has ample seating with friendly staff. We arrived around 5pm on a Thursday night and were able to pick wherever we wanted to sit. The tables are large, which is key since you receive quite the spread as you would other Pho places. We started with Vegetarian Spring Rolls, and Vietnamese Iced Coffee, along with the standard tea served at most Pho restaurants. The rolls were piping hot, and came with a tart dipping sauce...sorry, I didn't catch the name!. Once they cooled down enough to eat, they were nice and crispy on the outside, without being greasy. On it's own, the dipping sauce is funky tasting, but I can see how it compliments the rolls when eaten together. I have spring rolls every chance I get, and these were by far the freshest tasting. The iced coffee was made with sweetened condensed milk, which is a nice change from cream and sugar. There was no sugary kick, but instead, balanced out the bitter taste coffee can leave. If you are a Pho lover, you know attempting the medium and large sizes is a crazy idea. My date (6'2 and 220Lbs) forgot how much you get, and ordered a medium....needless to say, there were left overs! His contained rare beef, brisket, chicken, and meatballs...yeah, you wont leave hungry!. I opted for a small rare beef regular. No funky tastes, very tasty broth. Came with the usual mountain of crispy bean sprouts/lime/mint plate. I drowned my soup with bean sprouts and a dash of hot sauce, and attempted the chop sticks. YUM!! While finishing up, a couple sat down across from us, and I overheard the guy mention that it was a well kept secret...he was right!. The service was quick and like I said before, very friendly with a smile and warm goodbye. The bill came to $25 for the drinks, appetizer, and main meal for two people. Worth the try, especially if you want a quieter Pho experience...no neon lights!! haha

It was good compared to others I've tried but still missing a flavor in the broth. Service was quick. The guy who gave us the menus handed us with a paper to write down our order but didn't speak which was fine because we understood what we had to do. Everything was cooked as we ordered and the vegetable spring rolls were amazing and piping hot when they came out. We couldn't even eat/touch them until our main dishes came out. They were also quick to refill our waters as well. Interestingly enough, the guy who handed us our menus actually finally spoke perfect English when we went to pay. This was a good local spot which consist of actual Vietnamese owners/cooks. There was also a group of Vietnamese ladies who were definitely regulars.

The beef was really tender and flavourful. I did get a fatty and gristley piece though :( but on the most part, the beef was lean. The chicken was lean and a tiny bit dry, but still flavourful a tasty. The shrimp were medium sized and ok. Not that plump nor juicy, but for the price, not surprising. The spring roll was mostly wrapper and too oily for my liking. The rice dish came with fresh cucumbers and pickled radishes and pickled carrots. The vermicelli dish came with shredded lettuce and bean sprouts, which were underneath the vermicelli. It also came with pickled carrots and crushed peanuts. The fresh vegetables were fresh and the picked vegetables had a good sour bite to them. We also got a tub of fish sauce, which neither of us like, but my dad does, so I saved it and gave it to him on the weekend when I went to see my parents. I appreciated that they labelled the fish sauce with a warning to open slowly (with a smiley face, lol). Food is packed in styrofoam, which is not my preference for environmental and health reasons. Service was very courteous and efficient. I was told it would be 25 minutes. I returned in 22 minutes and they were just tying up the bag. Perfect timing! Note that the prices on their takeout menu (pictured) are outdated. My dishes were listed as $9.50 each on the menu, but I was charged $11.75, which is still a great deal. Prices have gone up as a result of the Covid Pandemic, so I get it. I would just suggest that they print new takeout menus. The restaurant is a little off the beaten path in Chinatown. Street parking only.
