Beef and shrimp pad thai $13.95.
    Jennifer P.

My husband and I had dinner here recently and overall we thought it was good. My husband is not a fan of noodle soups and I'm not crazy about Pho but love Phnom Penh noodle soup which most Pho places also serve, but unfortunately Pho May does not. So we ended up getting the beef and shrimp Pad Thai ($13.95) and grilled beef, chicken and pork and spring roll rice dish ($10.95). We shared both dishes so I got to eat about half of each dish. The portions are good here, not puny like at some places and they are generous with the meats, especially the rice dish. I liked the rice dish the best. You get 3 types of grilled meat and they were all very flavourful. They were marinated in spices and sesame oil, which you can smell (very fragrant). The meats were slightly sweet tasting, which is traditional for Vietnamese grilled meats. The cuts were also lean, which I appreciated, as I hate gristle and fatty meats (with the exception of bacon, of course). The spring roll was small but bursting with flavour and actually had pork in it that you could taste. It was crispy and hot. The rice was nicely cooked and the salad it came with was fresh. The Pad Thai was also good, albeit a tad greasy, but not as greasy as some places. You could smell the fish sauce, but it wasn't so overpowering that I couldn't eat it. It was a nice mix of sweet, sour and tangy. We got 4 shrimps and one of them wasn't deveined properly (yuck). Since 3 of the 4 shrimps were cleaned properly, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that it was a one-off. The beef was the same as the grilled beef in the rice dish (i.e. delicious). It also had onions and eggs (we asked them to omit the bean sprouts). Decor is pretty simple, although it's much nicer than you would expect from the outside. Cutlery, napkins and sauces are in a caddy at each table (typical of most casual Vietnamese restaurants). They give you a complimentary pot of tea upon arrival. They bring you the menus with a pen and paper. You write down your own order. After the meal, you pay at the cash register. Our server was nice, but with this kind of restaurant and set up we didn't have much interaction with him. Especially after he brought us our food. Washrooms were not the cleanest, unfortunately. The washrooms were also at the back of the restaurant, past the kitchen and storage areas. It looked like a part of the restaurant that you would think is for employees only. Pho May is in a strip mall in Vanier. It's in the same strip mall as Winners, Factory Direct, Staples and Dollarama. There's lots of free parking. I liked the food (4 stars) but they need to clean up their washrooms (-1 star).

Found them on Yelp whilst in the neighbourhood. Quaint little place in a strip mall. We enjoyed the mung (dry vermicelli noodles) with grilled chicken and the pho beef noodles, but was not a fan of their fried rice which was a bit wet, too brittle for us. Would visit again if in the neighbourhood.

We stopped here as a friend was hungry after getting off work and likes this spot. Instantly when you walk through the front door, the aroma of the broth hits you and it smells amazing. The decor is minimalist and that's exactly how it should be. I got a flank noodle soup and chicken rice wraps. The wraps were a bit more simple than I would liked, but these are chicken wraps not grilled chicken, so they're a fresher variety. They were served in a cool little design and were good. They could use a bit more flavor such as mint or cilantro and having the meat being sautéed to add a bit more punch. Peanut sauce was good. The soup was good but not great. The noodles were cooked nicely and the broth has a great aroma to it. This is where I gave it three stars instead of four though, because the flavor wasn't as strong as I would have liked. I'll acknowledge it's tricky keeping that broth a consistent flavor level, but it was weak in taste. I think it was the owner who served us and he was very friendly, especially since we overheard him talking about having one of their windows broken the night before and it was going to cost them a lot of coin. All in all, pretty good and I'd go back, but it is not Chinatown quality. I read a bunch of reviews saying they wouldn't go back, and while it wouldn't be my first choice, I'd give it another shot if I was in the area.

I had lunch here and while staff were really nice and polite, the food was just ok…read more I had the grilled beef vermicelli ($11.95), and I told them to hold the bean sprouts and fish sauce. So it came with shredded lettuce, mint, matchsticked cucumbers, julienned pickled carrots, and was topped with crushed peanuts. The portion size was good but I would have liked more meat and vegetables and less vermicelli. The beef was tender and lean, but the slices were incredibly thin. However, the marinade was flavourful and not too salty. The vermicelli was cooked nicely, and vegetables were fresh tasting. I liked that the dish did not taste oily/greasy/fatty. My meal was good, but there was no wow factor for me. I was brought a pot of hot tea as soon as I was seated. You write your order on the paper they give you and the server comes and gets it. When your food is ready they bring it to you. After you're done eating, you pay at the cash register. Service was good for this type of restaurant. My server (who I suspect is also the owner) noticed I needed more napkins and brought me some without me even having to ask. The restaurant was full of solo diners like me. I suspect it's popular with people who work nearby. There definitely was a steady stream of customers for dine in and take out. The restaurant is in a strip mall with a small parking lot.

I had lunch at Pho Hoan today and service was at lightning speed, but food was just ok…read more I went after the lunchtime rush and arrived at 1:30pm. There were still customers but it wasn't too busy. I was seated right away and given a menu. I felt like 3 minutes later the server came and asked me if I was ready to order. Thankfully I already knew what I wanted and just needed to verify that it was in fact on the menu and it was a price that I was willing to pay for the dish (both affirmative). So I got the Three Meat Vermicelli (beef, chicken and pork) $11.25. I remembered to ask for no bean sprouts and no fish sauce. My meal came out in what seemed like 7 minutes. I was in and out in less than 30 minutes, lol. Talk about a quick lunch! The server was polite and nice enough (although once he brought me my food, he didn't come back, but so is the norm for such eateries). The vermicelli was nicely done and I got a good amount of lettuce and cucumbers (although the cucumbers were cut too thickly for my liking). I would have liked more carrots. Veggies were fresh. Meat portion was ok, but I couldn't eat most of the pork because it was mostly gristle and fat :( The beef and chicken were good and lean though. The marinade on the meats was flavourful. Overall, alright but no wow factor for me. The place is small and only seats 32. You pay at the cash register when you are done. The restaurant is in a strip mall. Lots of free parking.

Although Ottawa does not have as many options as we have in the GTA (where I am from), I found several promising Pho places, especially on Somerset street at the eastern edge of Ottawa's small Chinatown. The Chinatown is smaller and quieter compared to GTA's. But looks like there are several long-established Vietnamese places. After researching (my focus was rare beef Pho) - and considering where we were staying - I decided to try this place. It was highly recommended by the local media as well. I do not know well about the history of this restaurant - but it looks an unassuming, family run and genuine place. When we entered inside, most of their tables are occupied and there was a customer waiting for his take-out order, pleasantly conversing with the owner's family members. We tried #8 Beef rare rice noodle soup #11 Beef rare & Beef brisket rice noodle soup The service was quick and the bowls were served hot. A few minutes before the bowls were served, a dish of super fresh basil, bean sprouts, and lime was brought to the table. The bean sprouts were very thick and crispy. My expectations were running high when I saw it! The Phos did not disappoint. They had a lot of lean and soft rare beef, and the brisket was impressively melty tender. The soup was hot and rich, and the saltiness and a hint of veggies' sweetness were perfectly balanced. Not fatty, very smooth, clean, and pure. The Phos' bowls do not look sophisticated but are no-frills-genuinely tasty, which I appreciate most. I look forward to coming here when I come back to Ottawa again.
